Hello... Technically I'm due on 30 March, but the March list is already quite long and if DS was anything to go by, we'll be well into April by the time this shrimp makes an appearance (fingers crossed, touch wood, etc etc! - still at the early superstitious stage!!). Shall I start with some stats? I'm 34 (will be 35 just after birth), DH is 33. We've got one DS just turned 2.

Hope to have some thread partners soon, I'm v friendly, honest

I think you're right about what is offered in the way of scans being a bit of a lottery. My midwife has suggested to have the nuchal fold test done privately as our NHS don't provide it. We had decided to do it privately anyway, along with blood tests, so no problem. I don't object to the cost, just the hassle getting there - live in Cheshire and will be travelling to central London for a 1715 appointment. DH well used to driving in London, thankfully! Daren't even think about the worry of drinking a litre of water an hour before the appt. stuck in traffic!

Colditz - sorry to hear you have a fear of needles but reassuring to hear you are getting the support you need. I am rh. negative too, so will probably have more bloods taken, not sure about this? I'm not too good at having it done either, I have to transport myself into a faraway land with deep breathing exercises and a reward of something chocolatey afterwards.

Hope all ok with folks, glad to see this thread picking up again. I am going to visit mil tomorrow in London and we will be telling her our news. I am SO excited, I know she will be thrilled for us, this will be her seventh grandchild. Have a good weekend everyone, bye for now!

Missus · 09/09/2005 15:26

Hi everyone, I've just discovered this site and have been reading through the messages. So reassuring to know that everybody suffers from something in this pregnancy business. I am 8 weeks pregnant and soooo tired I could happily sleep all day and all night although Boris (as my DH calls the baby) is causing ms at night instead of morning or during the day so am up stuffing my face during the night in the vain attempt to feel better enough to sleep. My doctor is arranging for me to have a scan next week as there is twins in my husband's family (his aunts). Has anyone else had a scan this early? And is it safe?

MrsQ · 09/09/2005 19:32

Hi Missus. Ooh twins... think you'd be our first set on this thread! Perfectly safe, and normal, to have a scan this early. Anything from 6 weeks is fine. I like Boris - careful though, we chose a name for the Bump and ended up not being able to give it up when it came to naming proper so its ended up as DS's middle name

Tumblemum · 09/09/2005 21:08

Hi Missus, I too have ms at night, you have my sympathies, I have to get up to drink some pineapple juice.... Why?

Ponka · 10/09/2005 21:10

So how's everyone doing? Pretty well on the whole, it seems.

Please excuse me for not checking in for aaaaaages! I love Mumsnet loads but sleep beats it hands down at the moment.

Nice to hear about all the scans that are taking place. I've not got my date through yet.

Spots, same due date! Freaky.

Missus, would you like twins?

Does anybody else find that they have completely gone off anything remotely healthy? This happened to me last time, too. Just when I should be eating all the right things for the little bean, even the thought of fruit and veg seems to send me into violent wretching fits. Changing pooey nappies also do that to me. I've only been sick once though.

I've definately got a small bump here but I think it's all made of chocolate and junk food

FirstTimer40 · 11/09/2005 16:23

Hi all
Nausea has worn off a bit (is that a dangerous thing to say..) but still no energy. Boobs really hurt, if they get any harder they will look like silicone! They were only small in the first place but are now bit bigger, I may even have a cleavage for my wedding dress...
Honeymoon is in Cyprus, posh hotel on beach. I just hope I don't throw up endlessly on the plane, I have always been a bit travel sick and the idea of the air hostess walking round with that pot of smelly coffee, yuk.
Hurrah, I now have a midwife, she is coming to see me tomorrow. She called around last week and left a note asking why I was not home for the "appointment" - that would be because I had no idea she was coming, no letter or phonecall. Pregnancy is supposed to make you phsycic (sp?) is is?
Its still 10 days to my scans and I seems a long time to wait - not having had any scans until 12/13 weeks makes "it" seem less real, I am anxious to know all is well, and being older seems to makes that worse, I KNOW my risks are higher, I just wish everyone would stop telling me, as there is nothing I can do about it, except cross my fingers. I am actually very optimistic - is that the happy hormones ?

MrsQ · 11/09/2005 17:11

Crikey, you wait til they're full of milk. Somewhere beyond shot silicone I think.

Honeymoon sounds gorgeous! Can we all come?! When's the wedding again?

Ponka - I'm just the same. Last time I virtually lived on MaccD's for lunch at work and this time we drive past a fish and chip shop on way back from picking DH at the station... its a good job its a bugger to park at or it'd be chips everynight. But isn't what they invented Pregnacare pills for??

Hi everyone, I have had a few days away from my PC as is was DS's 2nd birthday on Saturday. I am glad to hear that everyone is doing well. DH keeps teasing me about the twins thing as his Mum's aunts were twins and these things can jump a generation.

Just when I thought ms had gone away I have been sick the last 3 mornings in a row and the only way to make myself better is to eat. Yesterday we went out for the day and I had toast for breakfast (after I was sick), then I had a cheeseburger (small one) on the way down, then I had chicken curry whilst we were out, then a chicken and bacon sandwich on the way home, I then had sausage, baked beans and a cheesy jacket potato for dinner!!

Today I have been a little better eating wise, although I did have chips with my lunch. My waistband is defintely expanding as I have to move my belt round so that it fits in the belt loops. I also had to go and buy a new swimsuit today and bought a maternity one as I will need it sooner rather than later (my old one was see through).

Pasta for dinner tonight. It is like last time, I crave carbohydrates and the only veg I want to eat is brocolli (which isn't a bad thing). The thought of fruit turns my stomach at the moment.

Missus · 14/09/2005 14:40

Hi everyone,

Sorry not to have replied to your questions MrsQ and Ponka but have been so ill for the last few days that it feels like an epic journey from bed to loo let alone downstairs to pc. The answer is that twins would be great because if this is how my body reacts to pregnancy then I am NEVER doing it again. Am probably being a big girl about the whole thing and not suffering any more than anyone else but ....

Glad to hear that you are over your nausea for your wedding FT40 - when is the big day?

Tumblemum - does pineapple juice do the trick?

Homsa · 15/09/2005 20:57

Hello, I've also been off MN for a while as a thunderstorm fried my modem last Friday! Surge protectors are a good thing!

Had my first hospital appointment on Tuesday, scan was quite stressful, as bladder bursting and DS having a screaming fit in the waiting area, but everything fine otherwise - little heart beating away, and the bean was the right size too! My ms is getting better as well, I haven't thrown up for several days now, and even managed to cook a meal for ds tonight.

It has been an up-and-down type of week otherwise. DS had his long-awaited appointment at the Child Development Centre yesterday, and it wasn't good news. We were mainly concerned about his speech delay, but were told he's far behind in lots of other areas as well and may even be autistic. They asked us if we wanted to see a geneticist about the new pregnancy, I was really shocked by that. BUT this is not the right board to post about this stuff, so please don't feel you have to offer advice or anything! We're actually coping OK, we had been worried about this for so long and now finally something is happening to help ds, so that's a relief in some way.

colditz · 17/09/2005 10:45

hi guys, Has anyone else just started getting morning sickness in this past week?

I honestly thought I had escaped it this time round, but am heaving over the toilet bowl every morning

Tumblemum · 17/09/2005 16:40

Homsa hope you are ok, thinking of you.
Missus, re the pineapple juice well it seemed to ease things when ice cold with added ice but drinking such vast quantities have had to switch to sugar free squash

I am ok, had a scan on Friday and the baby is doing fine, so very relieved about that. Feeling sick, tired and grumpy on and off and have not been nice to dh today so must eat humble pie tonight. Hoping things will improve in the next trimester.

JIFDA · 17/09/2005 19:14

Hi have just been reading through this thread & thought i had better join now. my expected due date 14th April, I am 10+2 weeks. I have had terrible morning sickness for the last 2 weeks, I seem to feel sick all day! Has anyone any suggestions of what i can do???? The thought of any food makes my tummy turn! this is my 4th pregancy & i never suffered with morning sickness like this with the others! Any suggestions??????

Homsa · 17/09/2005 20:09

We're doing OK tumblemum, thanks. It's hard to know what to think. Some of the things ds does make me think he can't possibly be autistic. But maybe I'm in denial. Hopefully he will have a more thorough assessment soon.

I'm so, so glad my ms is easing off now, it really is the pits. My sympathies to those who've only just started suffering from it! I think the only thing that really works against ms is adoption . But seriously, I think when the hormones irritate your stomach lining, it doesn't really matter what you eat or do, you will be sick anyway. Fizzy drinks help to get the burps out, though, and sucking a boiled sweet is good when you have lots of saliva in your mouth. That also keeps your blood sugar levels up.

Missus · 19/09/2005 11:29

Homsa sorry to hear your news and hope you are coping ok.

My ms seems to be coming to end now too (touch wood). Have been reading the book 'the best friend's guide to pregnancy' and they refer to ms as progesterone poisoning which I think sounds much more like how you feel when you have it. JIFDA, in my limited experience the only thing to do is to eat whatever you want whenever you want it. Carbohydrates seemed to do the trick for me.

I don't know if any of you get the Mail but I happened to read Normandie Keith's (if you don't know who she is picture tall, thin, beautiful, wonderful skin and hair and you will have an idea) column in YOU magazine. She is 3 months preggers and just stopped feeling sick. As she usually appears to only eat one carrot every two weeks I found it very reassuring to hear that she has been sustaining herself with doughnuts and chips for the last month like the rest of us mortals.

Had first appt with obstetrician on Friday and was given a scan. Not twins as GP suggested - only the one bean in there! Very cool to see heart beating even though only 1 inch. Can't wait to have 'proper' scan at 12 weeks now.

By the way, is anyone else on this thread a first time mum?

MrsQ · 21/09/2005 08:10

Morning All, been offline for a while (grr ntl) so just catching up. Nice to hear a few ms's have been tailing off (sorry colditz and JIFDA!) Mine is also tailing off - a bit! Still have moments where I have to stop everything I'm doing and try a bit of deep breathing. Eating really has helped me. Sometimes have a grim half hour forcing myself to think about food, stomach churning the whole time, mentally running through things I might be able to stomach but when do find something and eat it does usually get a lot better. And I agree, carbs are key. Tried a day of nice healthy fruit but all the sugary acid just made me feel worse!

Had nuchal fold scan on Monday. All well. Now have the liklihood of Downs as a 'normal' 15 year old. Just wish I had the energy. but not the acne!

Does anyone know if its OK to carry on sleeping on your tummy? Its my normal getting to sleep position but I keep coming off it at the mo'. Its not really physically uncomfortable at the moment, more just mentally keep thinking I'm squashing the bean.

FirstTimer40 · 21/09/2005 09:12

Hi all
Must just have a rave about my nuchal fold scan which was yesterday, at age 39yrs 10 months now (the FirstTimer40 was age when will be born!) I was given a risk of Downs of 1 in 68. That made me quite anxious and when arrived for scan (which was private as not on NHS here) they were fantastic - great service and very kind. The pics were very clear, at 12 weeks now, could see him (I asked and was told 85% sure its a boy) in detail, all fingers and toes, stomach and blood flow. Heard and saw heartbeat which made me cry. He moved his arms and kicked legs and turned to look at us (I know these are involuntary movements at moment but I was amazed). He was the right size etc and based on nasal bone, thickness of fold at back of neck and blood test results was told the risk of Downs gone down to 1 in 1200 - so am happy, I know its not conclusive but I can live with that and will now not have an amniocentisis. It is such a relief Money well spent I feel (although think the NHS ought to offer it etc). We got 8 mins worth of video which will be worn out if we play it anymore
Went for my 12 week NHS scan same afternoon and they didnt do it because they said I had had private scan that morning (I thought this was a bit of a cheek as that was something I had to arrange privately and I thought I had a "right" to an NHS one too). They took blood and I saw the midwife so journey not completely wasted.
Missus, I am a first time mum too ? Any more ?
How is everyone doing?

pacinofan · 21/09/2005 10:42

Hi all, really glad to hear of scans going well for us all it's kind of the first 'milestone' isn't it?

All ok with me but still suffering loads with this all-day sickness feeling and also just feeling exhausted. I am generally pretty fit (try to swim a mile three times weekly) but at the moment all I want to do is sleep. Consequently I have actually missed my swimming and yesterday went for the first time in ages - managed 40 lengths and that was plenty!

Firsttimer40 - surprised to hear you were denied your scan on the NHS? My midwife knows we are paying for the nuchal fold scan at 12 weeks but said we we would be offered the NHS one also. Frankly, I think it's a cheek to deny you the NHS one. If you feel strongly enough I would speak to someone about it (not sure who though?) I realise it's a load of hassle but just think there is a principle involved here - one shouldn't be penalised for going private, particularly when they pay for the NHS service through taxation. Right, off my soapbox now!

Have you all told your friends/family yet? All our family knows now, mind you it would have been pretty hard to hide as bump is fairly obvious. Have already started shopping for maternity wear on Ebay.

Hope everyone all ok,

colditz · 21/09/2005 14:23

har YAY my "morning sickness" was a blip and have not had any more!

I had a 12 week scan this morning, everything is fine, baby is 5.5 cm long, the bleeding isn't coming from inside my womb, so is probably my cervix. Which means it doesn't scare me anymore.

My due date is 6/4/06. 2 days after ds's 3rd birthday.

This week, i am mostly craving curry and mint yoghurt

TamaraJ · 21/09/2005 15:12

Hello everyone, thought I would be brave and join in....

I'm 12 weeks today. This is my second pregnancy. The first ended in MC in January (I was 6 weeks). Because of this, I have been a nervous wreck and the last 8 weeks have been the longest of my life. I have had a lot of problems with bleeding and have had 3 scans at the EPU who have been brilliant. The last scan was at 9 weeks and everything was ok so I'm hoping that nothing has changed.

Tomorrow I am having a private Nuchal Scan + Blood test. It's not available to me on the NHS so it's costing £205 Like FirstTimer40 I have also been told that if I have this private scan I will not be allowed to have my NHS dating scan....

I turned 34 last week so think that puts me in the older first time mum category ?

From week 7-11 I had horrid MS and was sick most days and feeling sick all day and night - nothing 'morning' about it for me

Haven't told any family or friends yet and because of the MC earlier in the year (no one knows about that except me and hubby)I feel nervous about telling people - almost as if I will jinx it as soon as I break the news and something will go wrong....

cori · 21/09/2005 17:35

Hello everyone,
I thought i had introduced myself on this thread but cant see any of my messages. I blame pregnancy brain. Anyway, I am offically due on the 4th of May, but have been advised that I am likely to have an elective ceaserean at 38 weeks so will be due in the middle of April sometime.
I am currently 8 weeks pregnant. Have been having all the usual pregnancy symptoms not too bad though. Although I am verging on paranoia most of the time. I had a miscarriage earlier this year at 16 weeks. So it will take me a long time to feel comfortable with this pregnancy. I have already had a scan at 6 weeks, everything looked fine.( but I have heard this before)
Tamara, I kow how you feel, just remind yourself that after 12 weeks you only have a 2% chance of miscarrying. ( I was just unlucky last time)

colditz · 25/09/2005 13:29

Right, come on guys, we are at the bottom of the list all the time. Let's do some more chatting .

Anyone had any good cravings yet? Mine was jelly, and olives in garlic dressing (not together)

pacinofan · 25/09/2005 19:23

Hi Colditz, no specific cravings but am eating like a horse. I swear it's not greed, I seem to be permanently hungry. Already gained 6 lbs in weight (am 10 weeks tomorrow) so making a conscious effort next week to cut back on 'treat' like things.

I have my first midwife appointment tomorrow, really looking forward to making it 'official'.

How is everyone else? Really quiet on here, I hope everyone is ok. Off to enjoy a log fire and a nice casserole done in my slow cooker and something good on the telly! Have a nice evening folks,

MrsQ · 25/09/2005 19:50

Nothing specific, but generally fancy anything salty! Had to stop myself drinking the gravy at suppertime tonight - not a v good example for DS.

Starting to feel much more human now as MS is tailing off. Still feel a bit wiped out, but hoping that's mostly due to cold I've picked up.

Told everyone at work about pregnancy this week (one girl already knew). It was lovely, everyone really pleased - although you can tell I work in an office where I'm the only mother, and practically the only parent at all... after inital flurry of 'well done, that's great news's', no-one asked anything I normally immediatly ask of a newly announced bump (how many weeks / how you feeling etc etc). Still, it was nice to get it out in the open and whiled away a slow afternoon for a few of us talking about names!

Finding it v frustrating not knowing if its a boy or girl. Don't really mind this time, as like the idea of a little gang (well, 2 at any rate!) of boys, but originally kind of wanted a girl before I had DS so.... At the nuchal scan with DS they gave us good enough odds that we happily went away being told it was a boy, but this time it was too close to call. Don't know how all you patient people last the whole 40 weeks not knowing. No willpower that's my trouble!

Dug out some old maternity clothes the other day. Not quite ready for them yet, but have sidelined a whole load of normal clothes and dug out my old 'fat' clothes from this stage last time/ just after had DS. Its all a bit of a mix of seasons and styles at the moment so I look a bit of a shambles but too knacked to care that much.

Hope all's well with everyone. Anyone got anything exciting coming up this week - bump related or otherwise?!

OP posts:
mum2one · 26/09/2005 13:17

Hello everyone. I'm about 10 wks pregnant with no 2 (so my nickname won't be appropriate for much longer). Having a fairly easy time of it so far but much more worried this time about things going wrong. I've got another month to wait for my scan - am desperate to know it's NOT twins! DD is 16 mths old and quite hard work when you are absolutely knackered! Any other May 2004 babies' mums due in April?
