Hi all. Thought I would get the new thread started before the old one got too full! Thanks to nomoremagnolia for the title

I'm really amazed that there are so many slings out there! I really thought there were only the baby bjorn ones and the hippy wrap ones, obviously I was very wrong! My sister has one that is simply a length of material whih she ties on to herself then puts baby in - what type is that? I think I'd like one like that rather than the baby bjorn, though I think DH thinks the baby bjorn style ones are more manly! Though I will probably be able to persade him if I tell him it's best for baby

I've always used an ergo baby carrier, I found it far more comfortable than the baby bjorn, and still very occasionally use it for my 2 yr old. It has more support around the waist than some carriers, which I found took the strain off my back and shoulders. Am planning on trying a stretchy wrap this time too, think they look cosy for winter.

BuzzInBlue · 09/05/2010 21:44

Crikey - I've been away for a few days and there are so many messages! Great to read about all the successful scans - but also sorry to hear about people's bad news :-(

Interesting to hear Loopy and nomore talking about the Bugaboo Cameleon - this is one we're looking at seriously. There's not a massive range of pram-style (totally flat) buggies here in America - main ones are this one, the Uppababy and the OrbitBaby. We're also thinking aout looking at the Bugaboo Bee - anyone know anything much about it? Is it suitable for newborns? Doesn't look to me like it goes totally flat.

Am really nervous about slings - I don't know why. I think I need to look into them more as they do look really fab.

Anyway, my news is we had our '12-week' scan yesterday (although they now reckon I'm 11 weeks) and all seemed well. We have the NT scan on Tuesday so fingers crossed for that :-)

Good luck to everyone else with scans this week, and happy shopping!! xx

Buzzinblue we discounted the bee as it doesn't go totally flat as as seat though apparently the baby nest does have a solid back/base, so maybe it is flat? The lady in John Lewis wasn't too sure and didn't get a nest out to show us. I wanted something with a proper carrycot for a winter baby, rather than just a nest/cocoon type thing, so that was the main reason we took it off the list. I'd see if you can get a proper look at the baby nest to be sure of it being totally flat.

We're not rugged country walk types and it would mostly be a walking round the village/town/shops type of pushchair, but DH plays rugby so it needs to be able to get across a muddy but flat field when we go to support him. The carrycot is higher than the bug in RL and the seat is definitely higher too. I love that sling site you showed me, though DH is anti-camo for RL (he has enough of it in work) and skulls and crossbones is much more his brother's thing than his! I like the reversible patterned ones best, am thinking I could use the pattern side and he could use the plain side

bunnygirl80 · 10/05/2010 05:45

I told DH yesterday that I want a sling for when baby is newborn, but that I think we should also get a carrier for when baby is a bit older as DH will find that easier, and a Bugaboo for when we don't want to carry! His response......you can get whatever you like darling He may think slightly differently when he's foraging in people's wheelie bins for food because I've spent all our money on overpriced crap improtant baby essentials.

I'm wondering if I buy a Sleepy Wrap whether it actually comes with this guy

Had my nuchal scan this morning. Everything was great except baby refused to lie in an appropriate position. In fact, it turned its back on us just as the sonographer was about to do the measurement. It took 20 minutes to coax it back. I am hoping that it's getting all of its stubborn behaviour out of its system now and will be better behaved once born!

Loopymumsy, you can have a positive birth experience in hospital too, it isn't your ideal but it will be fine.

cluelessnchaos · 10/05/2010 07:12

Btw bloody terrified thinking about scan, I must have woken up twenty times after funny dreams

bunnygirl80 · 10/05/2010 07:12

Loopy the baby definitely gets its personality from its mother

Sorry you're feeling so down this morning. Am I right in thinking you're high risk because you've had a PPH or am I thinking of someone else?

Can you labour at home as long as possible, go in, pop baby out and then get a 6 hour discharge, or will you need to be there for monitoring etc?

Try and remember as well that every experience is different, and just because it was lousy with DD3 doesn't mean it has to be again. Maybe as you know you will be having a hospital birth this time, rather than transferring in, you can plan how to make it the best experience possible and discuss your wishes in advance with the mws. And make sure you discuss any fears you have about hospitals in general with them well in advance, as they might be able to help you to overcome those before you're heading in to deliver.

Hope that makes some sort of sense

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 10/05/2010 09:10

Clueless - thinking of you for your scan! Mines in 2 hours...

nomoremagnolia · 10/05/2010 10:09

loopy at leasing me astray but at your previous bad hospital experiences. I would say that every time is different, but seeing as I'm yet to do it once you may not want to listen to me!

bunnggirl Glad it went well, my baby wouldn't stay still for the nuchal either!

mumcha sounds scary - hope you can find an emergency dentist - some areas have walk-in emergency dentist centres...worth a check?

I am seriously thinking of leaving work at 25 weeks I'm far too stressed and that's the earliest I can leave with mat leave and annual leave. Am I crazy for wanting out so early in the pg? I'm not intending to go back so the money side is not so relevant(once mat pay runs out it's run out iyswim) but will I be bored stupid at home? I just want out of my stressful job at the moment.

umf · 10/05/2010 10:42

loopy FWIW my experience is that hospital postnatal care (like you had last time) is much worse than birth care. I had fantastic birth midwives even in a really crap hospital. They were busy and not able to support me as much as I needed, but then it was a veeeery long birth. The actual labour was by far the best part of the whole hospital experience, tho.

nomore No, I think you would be very sensible to stop at 25 weeks if that's what feels best for you. Again FWIW my experience is that my friends stop work earlier the 2nd time, cos they've realised it's a good idea. Also I was a bit freaked out by press reports of a 2002 study showing that you're 5x less likely to develop pre-eclampsia if you're not working. So if you're feeling that the job isn't going to suit you later in pg, go with your instinct.

nomoremagnolia · 10/05/2010 11:31

oops! Just noticed my awful misspelling of your name bunnygirl

harmonyb23 · 10/05/2010 12:59

Youremindmeofthebabe my scan is also in the PM on Wednesday. Where are you located? Good luck for your scan!! x x x

umf · 10/05/2010 13:01

Good luck for scans today.

Wish my tummy would start looking bumpy and not just dumpy. 12+1 and distinct bulge but still looks cake-related.

mumcha · 10/05/2010 13:17

hi all well found a dentist and she just butchered my mouth because ive got really swollen gums with this pregnancy she poked them now im in agony.Talking about hospitals i really like mine its the ulster maternity hospital in belfast .They now have 7 rooms called home from home were you stay the whole time with birthing pool ,on suite etc but as im consultant led care i cant have 1 .

umf · 10/05/2010 13:25

Ow Mumcha you poor thing! I hate going to the dentist.

Don't understand why the fashion for MLUs has dictacted that a better birth environment is only for low-risk mothers. Surely drs could cope with working in nice rooms?
