Hi all. Thought I would get the new thread started before the old one got too full! Thanks to nomoremagnolia for the title

Stuffed

I'm 10 weeks, and have just had my bloods done today, and I think that they do them at this time so that the docs etc have the results to hand when you do the 12 week scan. That's what's happening for me, anyway, plus to have them for the consultant appt the following day.

We were going to tell ds, who's 3, this week, as we're going on a family holiday, but I had a sudden flash of 'what if the 12 week scan isn't a good one?', so am thinking I'll delay telling him until after the scan. It would be hard to tell him that he was to have a brother or sister, and then to turn around a week later and say 'no, you're not now'.

Sorry to sound paranoid, but I'm just so spooked by the fragility of the whole process.

KiwiKat, That's exactly why we waited until after scan to tell our dcs. When I was pregnant last year my dd was 3 and we told her prior to the scan, (looking back a very silly decision). It was actually more upsetting telling her than receiving the news I'd mc myself. My dh kindly offered to break the news to her as I didn't want her to see I was so upset, another bad decision as he just said 'The baby died'!! This would have been ok but now she plays with her dolls, puts them up her jumper and says, 'I've just got to go to the doctor to check the baby isn't dead' . I've had to have a quiet word with her as although I don't find it upsetting, I have a few Mum friends who have had several mcs and I had to point out it could be a bit upsetting if she said it whilst playing at their houses. All very awkward!

She also seemed to keep forgetting, so we'd be in sainsburys and she go 'Look mummy' drag me over to the baby clothes section and say, 'for the new baby!' and I'd have to explain again that there wasn't a baby anymore. It was awful.

That all sounds really morbid doesn't it, sorry. We mustn't forget that odds are in our favour that all is fine , but there are good reasons for holding back telling certain people.

Very sad to hear stuffedmk's news

4madboys I had my bloods done when I was 12+2 at my booking appointment and no one had previously said anything about them having to be done at a particular time. Can you contact your MW directly and figure out what's best? Reckon the MW probably knows better than the doctor....

Sympathies to harmony and addicted re the migraines. I haven't been that unlucky but have had a recurring headache the past few days. Am prone to them normally but feeling a bit guilty of popping too much paracetamol now that am PG so have only taken a couple of doses when it's been really bad. Anyone else taking paracetamol (make me feel better please!!)?

Fenouille really interesting to hear about the angle taken in France to focus on parenthood and relationships. Agree with Loopy that over here the focus seems to be exclusively on birth. So much so that I'm now panicking that I should be reading something to prevent divorce in year 1 post-child....any book recommendations very welcome

Feeling anxious today that my long-awaited trip home at the weekend to tell my family the news is going to be scuppered by the bloody volcano. Looked at ferries yesterday but just too expensive to book on the off-chance we'll need it. Keeping everything crossed....

hmmSleep · 05/05/2010 08:58

I've been taking paracetamol for headaches too Kyuri, sure it's fine, it's ibuprofen and aspirin we're not allowed.

Threelittleducks · 05/05/2010 09:41

I'm popping paracetamol too Kyuri. It's the only thing we are allowed to take (although it doesn't touch some of the headaches I'm getting).

It seems to be atmospheric pressure that is a killer for me - don't know why, but it really affected me in my last pg too in terms of headaches.
Must do more rain dancing.

umf · 05/05/2010 10:22

harmony I'm 11+3 too and dreadful migraine. Vaguely remember this from last time. Off to the sofa in a minute. Spending a lot of time with that sofa.

Fen hah! Nooo, drs here definitely not into talking about feelings. That'd be wussy social work kinda stuff. Loopy totally agree is all focused on the birth here and that's a mistake. In particular, I've seen some friends get very fixated on the birth and then have some trouble (well, even more trouble than usual) adjusting to life afterwards, because they had been encouraged to obsess about the largely fictional birth "choices" rather than thinking about the next stages.

Slightly off-topic, but yesterday there was a flasher in the park outside DS's school - it was all fine and they sent the most gorgeous policeman to cheer me up , but made me remember how much more vulnerable I feel while pg. Can't run at all, too breathless and prob also because heartbeat hopelessly irregular. I didn't actually want to run away from him, wanted to join the other mummies in giving chase, but made me realise that I couldn't actually run away in a worse situation.

blondecat · 05/05/2010 10:47

Fenouille thanks for the French tips. Sounds to me like they are onto something. Like Kyuri I feel that perhaps something to prepare us for how our marriage may change would be invaluable. I am worried (ha, I always worry) that it won't be change for the better and I like our relationship now!
The sole focus on birth is a bit like the focus on the wedding day and not the marriage. Mind you I have fallen into it too - I have signed up onto 2 NCT things - one course and one exercise class but they are both birth preparation and basic breastfeeding only. I guess the assumption is we will just muddle through the rest.

On a more note. Does anyone feel different down there internally? Or is it just me?

blondecat · 05/05/2010 11:13

Loooopy, confess I've been looking at prams too. Feel like a fraud buyt cannot resist.
The iCandy Peach is a bit heavy though - don't you think? It's 3 kg more than than the classic one!

Blondecat i have no idea as to what a normal weight of a pram etc is, it just sounded fairly light?

But someone else mentioned the Baby Jogger City Select (thanks to whoever you were but it would take forever to scroll back to find out - this thread grows so fast!) and i looked at the video on youtube for it and i think i may be sold on that instead! Not available in UK until June, but i don't need it till November so sure it'll be fine lol....but the sooner i get things the better as i don't want to be shopping when heavily pregnant! It seems very easy to use and seems to have better seat combinations for when we have another baby - and the main attraction to the i candy peach was the ability to convert it in the future rather than buying something now, and then having to buy a whole new thing when we have another child. Probably getting ahead of myself but thats the story of my life lol. I'll be 34 when number 1 arrives and i always wanted 4 children, so i can't waste much time before having another as i don't want any children past 40!

Hi all i got a bit carried away i have got my pram an all ,a nice big bouncy white leather 1 which came with the buggy part aswell .Ive also got my steriliser and bottles 2 i no its a bit early and things can go wrong but just couldnt resist .

PrivetDancer · 05/05/2010 14:26

blimey, mumcha, what are you going to do for the next 6-7 months?!

mumcha · 05/05/2010 14:42

lol i had an idea that if i get all my baby stuff in early then i can start my xmas shopping for my 3 boys because after having a baby in november the last thing i will want to do it trek round shops getting toys and stuff.I am planning on being super organised this year

applegirl · 05/05/2010 14:58

LOL mumcha that has made me chuckle

I think I have decided on an iCandy Apple, as it looks pretty rugged for countryside and town, plus it can convert into a 'pear' for 2 babies should I have another (which I hope to!)

youremindmeofthebabe · 05/05/2010 15:04

so sorry to hear your news stuffed

Loooopy · 05/05/2010 15:43

i read a few reviews about i-candy in general, and seem to be a few complaints about children being squished in the seats, straps too small, and not enough headroom....

having pored over umpteen things on the internet, i'm sure i want the baby jogger city select, as it gives more seating combinations - and the prices seem that bit kinder than i-candy...not that price should worry me as DP's mother has offered to buy it

Spoke to someone who sells them today and they said that if i pre order now, they won't have it until end of June, perhaps July, so think we will probably order it now so that it's here in plenty of time! They do a 14 day money back guarantee so if we hate it then nothing lost but can't see a better alternative out there.

I'm going to end up with everything here by July i reckon, had the letter today confirming risk of Downs is only 1 in 7789 so it finally feels like we are having a baby and so ready to splurge on things now

i have a confession, i've also bought my pushchair (on the mothercare baby plan) its the silvercross halo - but in my defence it was on offer aqt the time and its the one that both dh and i really really wanted, so it was an ideal time to get it!

ohh i've been flicking through the jojo maman bebe catologe i think i have finally found some maternity clothes i would feel comfortable wearing. i see a massive order coming!

harmonyb23 · 05/05/2010 17:34

I haven't even thought about what buggy I want yet! I just know that I am not going to be spending too much money on one, don't see the point buying a really trendy one, seems like their in it only 5 mins anyway (or at least it felt that way with my son who was walking everywhere at about 11 months!). I think I'm probably going to spend below £200.00 for sure, maybe even buy second hand.

Sorry to hear that others, like me, are suffering with the migraines! They are so horrid and I really do feel your pain. I am taking paracetamols Kyuri but just watching how many I am taking. I usually take ibuprofen but obviously due to being pregnant I have avoided this, I have to say that they work much better for migraines than paracetamol though... I haven't had migraines this bad in years!

Hope everyone is well, I am off to start on the tea (have already cleaned the kitchen floor and all of the cupboards out, go me!!!) Speak soon... x x x

hmmSleep · 05/05/2010 17:50

OMG, you're all far too organised! Please tell me there's someone else out there that likes to run round like a headless chicken trying to buy everything when they realise the baby's due in 3 weeks?

harmony, I'm most of your ds being so good at walking, my lazy monkeys, 4yrs and 2yrs, still complain if I try to get them to walk! I've started warning my dd that come November my ds and the baby will be in the pushchair, NOT her, she'll be at school for christ's sake, it'd look ridiculous, don't know why I let them get away with it .

redandyellowandpinkandgreen · 05/05/2010 20:13

I don't have a clue about pushchairs, haven't looked at a thing, don't have any idea what we need. Plus, our house is in the middle of renovations and I've never even changed a nappy

Suddenly panicked slightly when I saw Mumcha's post about Christmas. I might do the Christmas presents now and worry about the baby stuff later.

Hi all, been off thread for a week or so. Bit shocked to see how much bad news there has been; so sorry to all those who've had sad news.

Had a bank holiday walking in Brecon, which was very good for taking my mind off my first scan on Friday. So nervous. Am definately not joining in the buying frenzy until after.

Think you guys are right it would be a good idea to get Xmas shopping done v. early this year.
