loopy thanks for the recomendation re britax, it was good for ds1, i think it was called the britax rock a tot? and they now look similar but are called babysafe? or something, i need one thats big as i have big babies! i shall check that john lewis stocks the britax ones, but i am pretty sure they do, they also sell the bouncy chair that i want, a brightly coloured stripey one! v cute and doesnt have any of that vibrating bollocks, just a basic bouncy chair that i can stick baby in whilst i shower etc.

Booboobedoo · 30/04/2010 17:19

So sorry mylittlebubble. Really rotten luck.

stuffedmk - I hope you've got plenty to keep your mind occupied this weekend, and hope it goes as fast as possible for you.

Feeling a bit better here today. Perhaps it was just hormones yesterday.

tanmu82 · 30/04/2010 17:51

Oh, I'm so sorry for mylittlebubble, poodle and bellabear. You must be heartbroken. Take care of yourselves xx

I had my scan this afternoon and the sonographer was lovely. Babywriggled about a lot and played hide and seek with the placenta. Am very pleased and feel I can finally breathe out and relax.

Fingers crossed for you stuffedmk x

Such a mix of news on here after not having logged for a while.

It could will be my hormones - but I was really mad earlier to find that DH's boss has spread our news around the week before our scan. DH only told him so he had a better chance of time off, then he got there this morning to be met with everyone congratulating him! DH doesn't see the problem as they will know anyway in a week, but I am so mad. I have only told family and my discreet boss so far. Grrrrr. Made him remove his facebook wall, just in case...

Also, I have had 3 colleagues asking me if I am pregnant due to stacking on of weight - what is up with people, do they have no boundaries?! I'd never dream of it!

Anyway, rant over, time to enjoy the bank holiday weekend and use the extra time to relax I think! Hope for some sunshine, I fancy a well cremated bbq with no wine...

HeadlessLadyH · 30/04/2010 19:56

So so sorry to hear mylittlebubble poodle and bellabear's news. My heart goes out to you all. And crossing everything for stuffedmk.

I had a nightmare last night that I had started spotting too, which is never good news for me - thats how all 5 of my mc's have started. But stuffedmk I have friends who have bled, one who bled for 3 months and all were ok, and had healthy babes. Thinking of you.

HeadlessLadyH · 30/04/2010 20:07

Sorry that was rather insensitive of me - I've just read my post back. Sorry stuffed I shouldn't have mentionned what happened to me. Prob not what you wanted to hear. Sorry. Let us know how you are.

Lorelai · 30/04/2010 20:33

Hi all. So sorry to hear your news mylittlebubble, poodle and bellabear And am keeping my fingers crossed for you stuffed - keep us updated about how you get on.

In terms of car seats, it was me that said about the Which magazine - I will let you all know what it says when it comes out. It will be a few weeks though as the May issue only arrived this week I think. I'm thinking that I will probably get a Maxi-Cosi as they 'go' with the most travel systems, to give me the biggest choice, but I quite like Mamas and Papas buggies too, so will be interested to see how their seats are rated. I will also be leaning towards anything that is stocked in John Lewis as DH works for Waitrose so we get a discount

I've also been thinking about the essentials list - we never bothered with a baby bath, but we did have a bath support which was fab, and we will be buying a new one (old one got used so much it isn't really any good any more!). I would also say, when you are buying a buggy/pram, make sure it fits in your car - we had a bit of a scare with the second buggy we bought when we had trouble getting it in the boot the first time; it does fit, but it is quite tight.

Would it also be worthwhile putting together a list of things that we might have bought that were a waste of time? Mine would be a music player that hangs over the side of the cot - DD didn't sleep in the cot till she was almost 6 months, and you aren't supposed to use that kind of thing once they can sit up (if I remember correctly!), so we never actually used it!

Fenouille · 30/04/2010 21:20

Lorelai ALL advice for us first timers is welcome! You don't need to ask Although I'm doing alright so far - offers of baby clothes, bath + stand and monitors for free, and second hand cot, transat, swingy seat thing and pram. I'm leaning towards a sling for 6 months as someone recommended the other day to save on prams. Is that really realistic?

My goodness, I'm glad it's Friday - I'm zonked after my trip this week.

Lorelai · 30/04/2010 21:31

I don't know about slings - haven't used one yet, although I am planning to get one this time around. Buggies/prams do have their place though I think - for instance they are really handy when shopping - great place to put all the bags

Definitely get whatever you can for free - at the least it means you can work out exactly what you need or don't. One thing I forgot to mention before was a travel cot - we didn't buy one luckily, but were lent one by a friend, and never used it - when DD was small and we traveled, we just took the moses basket with us, when she was older we never ended up staying anywhere that didn't supply cots/travel cots. I can see occasions where we might have needed one, but as it turned out, we never did, so that would have been a massive waste of money. We also had a changing table lent to us, which has been really useful, but which I probably wouldn't have paid for (although I would do now that I know how useful I have found it IYSWIM).

b00kw0rm · 30/04/2010 22:22

Mylittlebubble- so sad to hear your news after all the stress you went through a few weeks ago and thought finally everything was going to be fine.
Stuffedmk- hope the spotting's settled down, I'm one of those people who's had spotting- even a big gush of bright red blood that had me convinced it was all over, but scan since was fine. I didn't have cramping though, so spotting on it's own can be ok?
I should also add my comments about the essentials list, but I'm just too tired, so off to bed instead... nighty-night!

mylittlebubble so sorry for your loss

stuffed I have my fingers firmly crossed for you. I really hope everything turns out ok.

I finally bought some maternity clothes yesterday. I feel soooo muc more comfortable with a lovely soft elasticated waistband I was pleasantly surprised with the range of clothes available, although there were some shockers there as well! They had a rather hideous selection of denim-effect cotton trousers with fully elasticated waists. The kind of thing I've never seen on a woman under 65 before - it was bizarre as they were mixed in amongst all the really nice skinny jeans etc.

Lorelai · 01/05/2010 07:31

Loopy - it's great isn't it! just a shame we can't combine it with sale prices!

Threelittleducks · 01/05/2010 08:21

I couldn't live without my pram (I don't drive) as we need it for going shopping (I know you're not supposed to, but it was SO good for carrying it all home). We also walk a LONG way to get anywhere/ get on a bus so ds needs pram for sleeping etc. We did sling him a few times but I am a small lady and found it hard to do anything with baby up front - did impede movement a bit. Also, had a c-section, which made slinging impossible for the first couple of months.

Am not even going to try slinging new baby and run after very active toddler son! Ha! Suicide! I am currently pricing double buggies.

Somehow all we have managed to need is a new mattress for moses basket and a double pram, so I can justify the expense. Still hanging on to baby stuff from last time.

My essentials would be....

  1. Breast pump
  2. Bottles
  3. Nappies
  4. Changing mat
  5. Bath Support
  6. Moses basket
  7. Sheets and blankets for moses basket
  8. Clothes - vests, babygro's and not much else as want baby to be comfy
  9. cotton wool
10. sudacrem 11. Lansinoh nip cream 12. scrathc mitts 13. pram for getting out and about 14. big horrible maternty pads! 15. big horrible disposable pants for the 1st few days (needs must!) 16. Comfy clothes for me that I look ok in for visitors (doesn't sound essential, but there will be photo's!) 17. car seat 18. Willing person to bring biscuits/juice when bf 19. sterilising unit/ milton 20. emmollient from chemist (wonderful for dry skin and getting into folds of baby's skin, keeping them smooth and nice - much better than Johnsons)

That's all I can think of...for now!

hmmSleep · 01/05/2010 09:43

Very sad news mylittlebubble, thinking of you. x

I agree with Lorelai and TLD, I couldn't live without my pushchair. I have slings as well, but like TLD am also quite small and found after a while I just found it too heavy to carry baby around, especially if carrying bags too. If you fancy nipping in to a cafe when baby's sleeping it's quite nice to leave them lying in pushchair whilst you sit and have a very rare moment to yourself too.

Babybean1 · 01/05/2010 12:09

Hi everyone! Sorry havent managed to log on since my scan as its been pretty hectic! Gave some of my clothes away that dont fit anymore (already!!!) and managed to put my phone in the bag! Felt lost as usually use it for mn etc as its easier than getting out the laptop!
Anyway, have it back now - Phew!

Was so sorry to read the news from Poodle, Bellabear and Mylittlebubble. Hope your all getting the support you need.

Great news on your scans Threelittleducks, apple and tanmu Really does lift a bit of a weight of your shoulders doesnt it?

Hope all is ok Stuffed and i know it much much easier said than done, but try to relax and fingers crossed for Tuesday.

Am baffled by all of the talk of prams etc at the mo as still getting my head around the fact its actually in there, so will probably ask things youve already covered when it finally sinks in that i need soooo much stuff Sorry!

One thing i wanted to check tho, can babies go in those bath supports from birth? Having a discussion with DH last night and he sais we would need a bath as it would be too youbg, but i was sure we could just use one of those support things??

Hope everyone has a good bank hol

Booboobedoo · 01/05/2010 12:52

Hi Babybean1 - we used a towelling bath-support in the kitchen sink from birth, then later in the bath. Towelling is nice and soft on their skin.

We live in a small-ish flat, and a baby bath just seemed too much.

Didn't miss it!

addictedisinthesecondtrimester · 01/05/2010 15:17

ohh morrisons are selling an avent (BPA free) pack at the moment 2 x 4oz bottles 2 x 9oz bottles 2 spare teats, 1 dummy (0+) and a bottle brush for £10

my dh spotted it whilst looking in the baby isle while i was shopping (men! ) hes now very excited, he walked around the rest of the shop clutching it saying, it all seems so real now!

but anyway i thought i'd share as thats a really good deal for all thoes who want bottles.

Hi all. I cant work out how to get myself added to the list of stats at the top. My EDD is 17th Nov 2010, and I would love to be there so I really feel part of this thread! Any advice welcome!

I am still nauseated and knackered, and now I have a nice pot belly too. I go through phases where only crumpets will help, so I am completely confused as to whether the bump is pregnancy or butter-related!

We had a 9 wk scan with a beautiful tiny baby and heartbeat but next week will be the real mccoy so I am holding thumbs.

4madboys - I cant bear tea now either! In fact going out "for a coffee" is now completely wierd as I dont have a taste for anything hot.

Tanmu82 - I might try bitter lemon. What works for me is citron presse - a cm of lemon juice, topped up with cold water and a bit of suger or syrup - mmmmm. Cafe rouge do a good one and it relives the nausea.
