Pagen · 26/03/2010 08:18

Forces - OMG thats so scary! Great catch by the MW though! Thank god you caught it in time. How are you now?

memorylapse · 26/03/2010 08:20

SK..yes I have a 5 year old DD who will be 6 in July..plenty of pics of her on my FB page I used to be on the July/August 2004 post natal thread.

Forces..good god....I dont know what to say except thank goodness your midwife got you checked over..Im actually quite shocked that they didnt keep you in for observation TBH...you will probably need to go on insulin now..interestingly when I was put on insulin..I asked about metformin and my consultant said they didnt recommend it in pregnancy

pamelat · 26/03/2010 08:23

Gosh forces , so glad you are ok. Well done midwife MW.

I can imagine you feel very shaken.

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 26/03/2010 09:01

Pigley - have a fab weekend

Littleowls - yeah, they make me feel pretty rough although I think I've got used to it now. They worked quite quickly - BP was down within one week and continued to go down for a bit. I had to have my prescription upped and BP is slowly going back up but that's to be expected apparently. They can also trigger depression btw so do take care of yourself.

Squirtsmum - know what you mean about the sleep. End of pregnancy discomfort and insomnia is one of the cruellest tricks I think.

Forces - That's terrifying! Glad you're OK, thank god your MW caught it.

Re big headed babies - my DD had a huge head as well, still does. She's tiny now for weight and height but still has a massive head, getting hats to fit is a nightmare. I blame her father because he's the same. I did tear badly with her but mostly because she came so fast in second stage than because of the head.

ML - so sorry for your loss DH and I both cried throughout OBEM the other night, it was so sad.

This is probably my last posting for a while cos off on holiday today. Long drive up to Annandale and then on to the Highlands. Can't wait! Hope everyone has a good week, I wonder if there'll be a baby on the thread when I get back?

pigleychez · 26/03/2010 09:16

Just a quick post...

Forces- What a fab MW!- Hats off to her! She definately deserves some recognition! How scary! Glad your ok though! what a

Heffa- Have a fab holiday!

Well DD seemed to be getting better and actually keeping things down but was sick again during the night so was up bathing her at 6.30 this morning.
Meant to be heading off to devon for the Hen weekend this afternoon but now im not sure if I should leave her. I know she will be fine with Daddy but feel like im abandoning her in her hour of need DH wants to me go and relax, especially after the past few days of constant cleaning up sick! Ohhh I dont know what to do for the best.

AnAngelWithin · 26/03/2010 09:23

will read properly later but just thought i would post this link in case anyone wanted a bugaboo bee?? here

LuckyC · 26/03/2010 10:43

forces !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you OK??????????????????????????????? Terrifying story.

hobnob Egg-laying much the best thing.

Angel I HOPE your HB works out. Sounds like they are being so unreasonable not to let you.

I cannot decide whether I should go to lovely MLU with gorgeous midwives where (whisper) they will let DH stay over if there is no-one else in, which is more than likely.

OR if I should go to the JR and have the option of an epidural.

Do you reckon that I can just decide on the day after I see how well I am handling labour??

forces !!!!!! at big head but glad your DD has the smarts to show for it!

brightred Mine's not shifting either; had not considered the C-Sec cutting face dangers. Hope they both spin. I can't physically spend any more time leaniong forward with knees lower than hips!

I am in total sympathies with everyone feeling like a WHALE. Feel HUGE. Lucky I don't live by the sea or I would have greenpeace ships around me.

LolaAnn · 26/03/2010 16:47

Oh Forces!! Wow, terrifying experience! I hope you are ok now.

LuckyC lol at your whale comment. I feel exactly the same

Pigley I vote go - make the most of your kind OH offering to care for DD she will be fine might be the last chance you have in a while!!

Well I have another bloody bladder infection, luckily I cottoned on early and went straight to the doctors who squeezed me in first thing. Am now on another dreaded course of antibiotics... 3rd time this pregnancy.. please let this be the last!!!

Carikube · 26/03/2010 17:57

Forces Hope all is ok now and good on you for wanting to do something for the brill MW

LuckyC as long as you have been classified as low risk, you can normally decide at the very last minute where you want to go and deliver so you shouldn't have to worry about this until the very last minute (I know that we get asked to express a preference but we're not held to it in any way). The only thing you would ever have to get sorted in advance is obviously a HB...

wibblela · 26/03/2010 21:50

Forces - what a catch by your MW!!! So horrible for you though, makes me wary of going back on Metformin if I have to...

LuckyC - a beached whale is very apt for me as well - when I sit down it is the most unladylike I have ever been - and I have been very overweight!

Pigley - I noticed on your FB status that you are going this weekend - GOOD!!!! Being pampered is what you need especially after the week you have had...

LolaAnn - well done for catching your bladder infection early, I'm with you, hope this is your last course of antibiotics.

Had some sad news this evening, one of my best friend's Mum has died Sounds brutal, but tbh it's kind of a relief that she has passed on, but still sad at the same time.

I am knackered tonight - we went to our local Ikea this afternoon and got a new mattress for our bed. Thankfully because I am already disabled I could use one of their electric scooters, however the whole experience has taken it out of me. When we got close to where we live as well - the heavens opened! The washing I had on the line at the time would have been dry as well - it's not any more! Serves me right for going out leaving the washing out!

Anyway, I hope you all manage to get some kind of lie-in tomorrow morning...

Yorky · 26/03/2010 22:10

LuckyC, didn't realise where you were, they wanted me to go into the JR with DD - but if we'd tried she'd have been born on the ring road! You can transfer from MLU (is it Chipping Norton?) to JR if you want the epidural when push comes to shove

Forces, that's quite a story, well done your MW and I hope the cons can sort an alternative for you quickly

Sorry to those I missed, DD wanted bedtime bottle mid-post so now I've forgotten all the replies I was going to do and its too late, bed is calling

AliMouse · 27/03/2010 07:53

Hello All,

Sorry I've been out of the loop for a while - work seem to be trying to get the most out of me while I'm still there and the last thing I want to do when I get home it put the computer on. I'm averaging 8.30 - 9pm bedtime at the moment - sometimes my 10 year old puts me to bed.

Very exciting to thing we will have some births soon!

I actually feel better now than I have all the way through my pregnancy - I think it's the Spring sun. Just got alot more get up and go, but it might have something to do with being able to chuck my two boys out into the garden and read the paper for half an hour at last!

Spend my £190 from the Government on a massive old fashioned 1970s style climbing frame for the garden. Seeing as I'm having another boy, I figure it'll get years of use and keep them all occupied. The plan being I can sit feeding the baby in the sun this summer while they monkey about.

Glad to read you are all doing ok and no major probs (grin)

ForcesSweetheart · 27/03/2010 11:15

Hiya Folks, Thanks for all the messages, it's been a scary couple of days! When I got home from hospital Thursday night I emailed my diabetes consultant (Dr L) to let him know what was happening and see whether I should increase my insulin dose now I was off the Metformin. First thing Friday morning he phoned me and asked me to read out all the test results they're written in my white book. When I did this he was really confused, as he said they didn't indicate acidosis at all and he couldn't understand where they'd got the diagnosis from. He said apart from anything else, if they suspected one of his pregnant patients had acidosis they should have called him in from home immediately and had me in intensive care - not sent me home! He confirmed that acidosis has a 50% mortality rate, but said "I REALLY don't believe you have it, I'm going to ring the doctor who made the diagnosis and ring you back." 10 mins later he phoned back and said I had to go straight back to hospital to have all the tests repeated and he'd see me there. When I got back to DAU it was the same SHO who diagnosed me, she said Dr L had phoned and given her a right ear bashing as he didn't agree with the diagnosis, but that she still believed it was correct, however as he outranked her she had to run all the tests again (including the horribly painful arterial blood gas one where they had to go in my wrist (twice - one side didn't work!) to get blood from the radial artery. So I was jabbed/prodded/ecg'd all day, while the doctors argued among themselves as to whether I was going to peg it or not! In the end my diabetes consultant won the battle (consultant versus junior doctor, was never really going to turn out any other way!). He went into a lot of detail with me about acidosis and why this wasn't even remotely it. He believes the reason I'm hyperventilating is that Molly is taking up lung space so I can't get a deep breath and I'm trying to compensate. He said he understood that I may be wary to take his advice and continue the metformin given the fright I'd had (I suspect the SHO got a real knuckle rapping) so if I wanted to try staying off them for the weekend and see how my sugars were on just insulin then I was welcome to do that and see him in clinic on Monday to review. I decided to give that a go, not that I don't trust him - from all he explained I believe him that it's not acidosis (and from doing more googling into my test results I too am struggling to see where the SHO got the diagnosis from!) but I just wanted to see if I really needed to be taking the Metformin or not. My post-breakfast sugars were fine with just my 8 units of insulin so I was hopeful I could do without the pills. Lunch was another matter however, 9.7 (target is under 7.8) with my usual 6 units of insulin, dinner was 9.2 with my 16 units. Given this I've decided to go back on the metformin. If I feel I'm starting to get more breathless I'll stop them but I think I have to take his word for it.
Anyways, sorry for not catching up on everyone's news yet, I'm absolutely shattered and intend to spend the rest of the day getting some kip and just relaxing. Have given DH a list of jobs to do (including giving the kitchen a thorough clean - gonna be interesting to see his interpretation of that!!). L xxx

fiveisanawfullybignumber · 27/03/2010 11:53

Hi all, sorry haven't been on for ages, feel like I've missed so much!!
Forces, wow, you've really been through it, take it easy!!! Great midwife though.
Pagen, good job you're gonna have family on your side. Anyone else worried about GBS, insist on testing, it's a simple swab test. I have GBS and with DC4 was booked in for induction 10 days early and given 3 hours IV antibiotics before they started the induction (I have a tendency to be fast!!)
They are happy to do the same for DC5, even though my useless community midwife said there policy is now different! I told her tough, I'm not taking any chances with my baby so refer me to a consultant, she did!
Pigley, go enjoy your self. Both my DD's have been sick this week, our Spanish exchange student probably thinks we're a right bunch!
SK hope you're enjoying the new car, take it easy as much as you can.

This baby is up very high like DS2, he managed to pop my bottom right rib out of the ligament a few days before he was born, think she might be a rib cracker too. The perks of having a tall husband with an unfeasably long body when you're 5ft nothing.
Been on Mat Leave for the past 2 weeks (went early) as had major health problems with my mum, wasn't fit to be in a customer facing roll, very tearfull. Good news back about mum though now, it's not the big C we all thought which is great news, but she is very unwell with multiple immune problems. Managed to get an Immunologist at the local hospital to oversee her case after emailing him, good as she's currently seeing 3 consultants for various issues, but they're all immune related. Hopefully he might be able to see a link.
Not long to go for all of us now, the finishing line is in sight, about 5 weeks till my induction.

ForcesSweetheart · 27/03/2010 13:09

Ladies can I pick your brains re slings? I know there was some talk of which ones are good on a previous thread but I've just found out the one I bought is one of the ones being recalled - the Infantino Sling Rider - so have had to chop it into pieces to send a bit back to the company. What kind would those of you who've used them recommend as best for BFing?

memorylapse · 27/03/2010 13:20

blimey Forces..what a palava!..however Im kind of guessing that the diabetes consultant knows what hes talking about as opposed to the SHO..who may not have the experience with diabetic patients...your bloods are similiar to mine and Im now on 10 units before tea of insulin..it seems it doesnt matter what I do..I cant get them down..have images of baby girl looking like one of the roly polys when shes born..
one thing I will say..chronic hyperventilation syndrome is a normal thing to occur in late preg..we should actually breathe with our abdomens..not our upper chests..but because everything is so squashed..its pretty difficult to do..so CHVS is a natural response...you dont get to fill all of your lung capacity with oxygen...this causes chemical changes in your blood gases and can cause..dizziness, pins and needles..headaches etc..chronic hyperventilation is more subtle than acite which can occur when you are having a panic attack..so it often goes unnoticed...if you feel really breathless..a good tip is to sit the wrong way round on a chair with a cushion on the back..rest your elbows on the cushion and lean forward..this can help enourmously..

memorylapse · 27/03/2010 13:26

now Ive got my CHVS ramble out of the way

went to DAU yesterday..my diabetic midwife was there and firmly put the other MW in her place saying my consultant wanted me to have an iron infusion..

saw the registrar who said that if I was going to term they would have just changed my meds but agreed that there wasnt much time in view of my induction...my HB is not horrific..its 9..but the problem is my ferritin (natural iron stores)..they are virtually non existent at 2...so the reg said that if my ferritin levels had been fine..they wouldnt be worried but I have no stores so I have iron deficiency with anaemia and have been booked in monday for an iron infusion..going to be in hospital for about 8 hours in total...bit scared as you can have a reaction to the infusion..kind of wish I didnt have to have it

Yorky · 27/03/2010 14:09

Forces I love my close parent carrier but have never bf in it. Also have a koorie sling (gorgeous rainbow fleece) which DD slept really well in but I couldn't cope with her on 1 shoulder for long
safe sling link

slipperthief · 27/03/2010 20:14

Forces glad to hear everything's a bit less scary scary.

I've been suggested either a ring sling or one of the stretchy one-piece wrap's for bfing. Both safer slings from everything I've been reading up on.

Also asked the other day about good slings for very hot weather (just in case the summer catches us out) and got some useful suggestions "here"

brightredballoon · 27/03/2010 22:34

Finally got our new car today, feels so liberating not having to break my back getting the kids in!

I am 35wks today, I am getting really excited about the baby arriving, I just cannot believe how quickly the time is going by.

I have borrowed a Vax carpet cleaner and am at the colour of the water I emptied today! Going to do it another once or twice tomorrow before returning it, I just hope the water becomings clearer!

I love the sling talk, I forgot I sold my Baby Bjorn after DS and I know some people say they are bad for baby's hips but I just dont get how they could sell something if it is really bad? It was so handy as it rolled up really small and was such a doddle to put on and take off and both mine loved it and I found it really comfortable to use. I loved my Coorie sling but I can't seem to find it, perhaps I leant it to someone and forgot to get it back, I found this a great sling but my children outgrew it quite quickly as they got frustrated feeling so tight in it.
This time I think I might try a Mei Tei although I do think the Close carrier looks lovely too.

ML hope the infusion goes well.

What is everyone going to use to keep the baby in during the day? I have had a couple of bouncy chairs/swings but I havent kept any so ideally I would like to buy just one - perhaps a small portable baby swing that doubles up as a chair as well? I think this looks quite good and hopefully can put the baby in it for some naps and then I have a play mat/gym as well. My pushchair wont be indoors so other than the moses basket I will only have those places to put the baby down - do you think that is enough? I feel like a first timer but actually its because I seem to be thinking "oh it'll be fine" about most things this time and I dont want to be complacent

Hope everyone is having a good weekend, we have a family fun day to go to tomorrow and then DD has a party, I hope to cook a nice sunday roast for dinner as I have been craving it all week!

memorylapse · 27/03/2010 22:58

BRB...congrats on your new car

I had a baby sling for DD1..19 years ago..but she was a big baby and I abandoned it when she was 8 weeks as I have a back problem..so didnt bother with the others..hence cant offer any advice there Im afraid.

I have a bouncy chair and my moses basket to put baby in during the day.

Am 35 weeks on tuesday which means baby will be coming no later than 3 weeks time..I am not prepared..havent bought the moses basket mattress yet...eeekk....I am working next weekend which Im not relishing..but then thats definitely it..got loads to do..DS1 is 16 in 2 weeks..so have to buy his pressies..and his prom outfit..kids haircuts to organise etc.DD2 starts ballet on April 12th too.plus squeeze in 3 hospital visits a week

sweetkitty · 28/03/2010 09:11

Morning all hope the loss of an hour hasn't made you all too tired.

I have the Moses Basket downstairs and also have this swing swing I bought it for DD2 as I thought it wasn't as big as some of the others which are huge and remember you are only going to use it for 6 months. The last two of mine have loved the music and the lights.

Slings - I have been a bit hit and miss in the past, I had a Baby Bjorn, then a Coorie, then a Close last time. The Close was OK but a bit of a faff to get on and off and I am small and it seemed to be like wrapping sheets and sheets round me. I need to do some research on another one maybe one of the more throw on and pop baby in types IYSWIM.

ML - hope the iron infusion works for you, it is scary you are one day ahead of me and will be meeting your baby at least 3 weeks before me (unless DS has other ideas)

Forces - hope you have recovered from your scare

Nothing much else to report here feeling very big and cumbersome, weighed myself on the WiiFit yesterday have put on 2 stone which isn't that bad I guess, I think the average is about 2 - 2 1/2 stone isn't it? I'm quite quick at getting it back off again luckily so not too bothered about it, having 4 young children will mean never really sitting down for long, it's a fab diet.

Anyway hope everyone has a nice relaxing Sunday x

OP posts:
memorylapse · 28/03/2010 11:28

SK..you never know..these babies have a habit of catching us out! you might go into labour early!

re weight gain...I hate to say it but people are complimenting me on how much weight Ive lost!!!..I think its hilarious..I still weigh less than I did when I became pregnant...Ive noticed my arms are thinner and so is my face..I was a BIG girl when I fell pregnant weighing in at 14 stone 6..I currently weigh 13 stone 12..

ForcesSweetheart · 28/03/2010 13:09

ml how tall are you? I weighed in at 13st 12lb too this morning (but I was 12st 11 when I fell pregnant so have gained 1st 1). If they're saying your baby's big there's gonna be nothing of you when it's out! They reckon Molly's about average sized so I'm just hoping not to be too much over where I started.

Thanks for the sling advice folks. I've just bought a cheap ring type one on ebay, was so ridiculously cheap that if it's not for me won't be a great loss. There was a sling lady from Slingtastic at the Salisbury Baby Show when I went but I hardly paid her any attention coz I thought I had my infantino sorted, wish I'd tried a few now.

I've got 3 weeks to go on Thursday and I wish it felt like it was flying by. I am so sore and tired, I reckon this last stretch will feel like the longest.

BRB For during the day I have a downstairs moses basket (have a big old heavy wicker one upstairs that'll stay put but a lightweight one on a light rocking stand for moving around more downstairs, also have a baby gym with a really padded comfy mat attached and a bouncy chair, and if she falls asleep in her pram it'll be able to sit in hall.

memorylapse · 28/03/2010 13:15

Forces..Im only 5ft 2...so I think there will still be plenty of me after Ive given birth...If you look on my FB profile you will see pics of me taken last summer compared to me now pregnant and there is a difference..in one pic Ive got really fat arms..I used to be skinny (8 stone) but when I developed underactive thyroid I piled the weight on and used it as an excuse not to loose it..but the proof is in the pudding..(although no puddings for me)..diabetic diet makes you lose weight!!
