Sassles - about your work, I'm not surprised you're upset. You could try asking for advice in the employment section on here just to clarify what the legal position is. I can understand that they may not have thought you'd want champagne but they should have given you something else. It must be nasty to feel unappreciated so close to going on maternity leave

Madcat - glad you found the receipt

Tomlin - enjoy some pampering today I keep thinking I should get my hair cut but I'm far too lazy. I'll look forward to some time off post-birth instead when I look like a complete mess.

Pigley - hope you have fun at the wedding

Gils - I'd be interested in stories about waters breaking too. I guess it must be obvious if they just burst but I've heard it sometimes trickles and not sure how to tell if that's happening?

I'm so exhausted today, didn't sleep at all really night before last, was looking forward to a restful night last night and then DD was up loads so we had to have her in our bed. She was fine but I always sleep worse with her there because I'm so conscious that she is IYSWIM?

alle01 · 23/04/2010 08:09

sazzles, you should check with a trade union or cit adv bureau, i do believe it is illegal, they cannot discriminate u for being pregnant, no reward for work, clearly is, u cannot made feel guilty for being pregnant either, it happened to me, i complaint, things were done about it and i was allowed to change office, my choice, they cannot make u, also losing interview for due date and being unfair to other candidates is an excuse, they're not going to suffer consequences for waiting to hear the results if u do it later, they cannot pass you for promotion because u r pregnant, unless they can give a different reason, they are acting unlawfully, get some help and threaten them with legal action if necessary, we have strong laws to protect pregnant women and new mothers, as an example, i once went to my gp, complainning that my boss was trying to make me work on my feet and making comments that i should quit, and she said if to remind him of the law once, and if it happens again she would involved the nhs trust that would protect me as danger to health if i couldn't access an union, so, please, don't suffer thinking there is nothing you can do.

sorry, quite in a bad mood today, wednesday had contractions for fifteen hours, regular every six minutes, painful ones, went to sleep at two in the morning, and thursday.... nothing, mw won't do membrane swap until 41 weeks, just 39 now, so not happy...

Carikube · 23/04/2010 09:08

Morning all!

Bit of a me post as I am very excited today that I am 37 weeks so can go to the MLU when it all kicks off (now watch me go for another 5 weeks and then need to be induced!).

DH doesn't have a hernia - it's an infection that he's on antibiotics for and is already feeling much better. He's also taken today off so we are in for a nice long weekend so I'm feeling nice and relaxed .

As for those asking about waters breaking, with DD mine went at about 5am when I was in bed and at first I wasn't sure whether I was just wetting myself or whether it was my waters . There was no pop or anything - and the same thing happened about 20 minutes later and that was it. Contractions didn't start until a few hours later...

memorylapse · 23/04/2010 09:28

Sassles..Im at the way you are being treated..sorry but I feel you are being discriminated against..it is not acceptable to insist you attend an interview around your due date or when ypou have potantially given birth..apart from anything what if you were to have cs? or are BF?...I had a similiar problem 9 years ago when I was working for social services..they insisted that I attend an update course whilst I was still on maternity leave...I contacted the maternity alliance..they were were very helpful

Maternity Alliance

mustbemadno3 · 23/04/2010 09:40

welcome madcat I brought tens machine too, i found it helped in early labour then I ripped the bloody thing off along with all my clothes!!

luckyc I know that feeling keep your chin up it will get easier. Im dreading that baby blues feeling, I just hope it dosnt turn into full blown pd as it did with ds1. I am sure you are just feeling bit baby blues and the lack of sleep is hideous. Ohhh what am I doing!!

sazzles you should have been recognized for your hard work, maybe they didnt get you any champers because they thought you couldnt drink!!!

Had mw appointment yesterday baby is on the brim, not sure what that means? I have been having very sharp pains that take my breath away but def not contractions. MW said its the baby pressing on the pelvic bone and it is painful .. ouch.
I forgot to mention to her that there has been a confirmed case of chicken pox in my ds1 class, he has had it before and so have i but think i should have mentioned it. Anyone else in this situation?
I would ring mw but 1 not allowed her number! and 2 she has booked me in for 2 weeks time when I will be 39 weeks but shes leaving so will have yet another mw (5th diff one) very disappointed.

Im off to a breastfeeding workshop as I have never mastered the art of it and although Im not fussed either way I did find it helped with the bonding process with ds2.

ML Hope your boobs feel better soon. Try some cabbage leaves in your bra. I had terrible mastitus with ds1 but I never breastfed him but it was so painful I couldnt even hold him. Hope they get better asap

mustbemadno3 · 23/04/2010 09:47

oh sorry one more thing. Just something that made me smile this morning - my 8 year old after brushing his teeth and out of the blue -
'mum, do you need a husband to
make a baby?'
My reply - 'ohh look the school bus is here, will be late!'

cupcakefairy · 23/04/2010 09:52

Morning girls

Thanks for the reassurances, especially rachel that's really good to know that your ds measured same as your new lo and it's a bit behind. I guess some babies just have shorter legs!

All this talk of waters breaking is making everything so real! I may need to put one of the maternity mats under our sheet soon but I haven't had a single sign of baby coming yet apart from a dropped bump. (Am only 36+2)
We have put one of lo's soft toys in our bed now in a vain attempt to get it smelling like us to comfort the baby... who knows if that will do anything!

All those off for pampering have reminded me I really need to do that!! Hoping most salons will still wax very pregnant ladies! I can't see a thing down there so no chance of doing it myself!

Tomlin I don't have a toddler but have read tips like asking visitors to greet the toddler first not the baby so they don't feel left out. I think it's perfectly normal for them to want the new toys though, apparently my big sis always took one of my teddies out of my cot when I was a baby.

pigley enjoy the wedding!

First baby of our NCT group born yesterday, eek!

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 23/04/2010 10:40

Carikube - congratulations on being able to use the MLU Thanks for the advice about waters breaking - I had mine broken for me in hospital so not sure what to look for if it happens spontaneously.

Mustbemad - at your DS

Cupcakefairy - good idea about the soft toy! I really need to get a little toy for the baby, I keep meaning to.

Tomlin - DD keeps climbing into the Moses basket and playing with her old mobile etc. I'm a bit worried she'll be upset when she sees the baby using it but I'm letting her do it for now. I've heard that getting visitors to make a fuss of the toddler and bring gifts for them is good so am hoping people will do that.

AnAngelWithin · 23/04/2010 10:56

gosh every time i look theres another 100 posts lol

mustbemad lol at the quick change of subject there!!!

carikube glad your DH is feeling better

Gils with my others, I felt a lot of pressure down 'there' before my waters broke. I heard them pop the last 2 times as well. The past 3 times my waters have broken just before labour started.

matcatsazz and annalouise welcome!

was a bit worried last night, I seemed to be leaking fluid, but its ok this morning. Think I probably did too much yesterday and the baby felt very very low so think it might have been pressing on my bladder Even when on number 5 you still get these scarey moments!!

DH is off work today but he has gone out this morning mountain biking. I don't mind, cos he got up and did the school run for me bless him. I busied round tiying up a bit and putting the last load of washing on the line. Apart from the other lot pack off nappies that have just arrived lol. Luckily while DH wasn't here haha. He doesn't understand my cute little nappy fetish lol.

Have put some lambshanks in the slow cooker with some onions and some mint gravy for later. yumyumyum! Feels like I've done half a day already!! DD2 is in a particularly mardy mood today. Sigh. Going to be a long day I think!!

Right, off to paint the bathroom ceiling now then its done!! WOOP WOOP! Just the toilet then cos I foolishly started that the other day as well, glossing the woodwork.

booboomonster · 23/04/2010 11:24

Sassles That is so annoying about your job. It's hard to say how you'll feel about doing the interview shortly after giving birth. But tiredness could certainly mess it up for you. I agree with others - worth checking out your rights. I sympathise as missed out on jobs whilst on mat leave last time - I did apply for one I should have got but didn't get it (applied as jobshare with another mat leave person) and everyone at work was surprised we didn't get it. Of course, couldn't prove discrimination but it was a big joke. Luckily having a lovely baby made up for it. Good luck!

hollyoaks we are starting potty training again this weekend. As someone else suggested - I'm taking advantage of being heavily pregnant and staying home for the week (well as much as I can). She actually did a poo on the potty the other day, and a wee yesterday (sorry if TMI!) and we've got the pants out to try from Saturday. When I got home from work yesterday (DH was with her) she had 3 pairs of pants on over her jeans. Not sure if this means she is ready or not?. good luck with yours!

I found tens quite a good distraction last time but as soon as I had gas and air I got rid of it. It?s a bit fiddly if you want to have baths and stuff too as obviously you have to remove it. I am a bit worried about how I'll cope without one this time, but if I really think about it, I don't think it did much so I think I'd rather not have the hassle. I actually bought mine off ebay second hand and sold it for similar so it didn't cost much apart from nominal postage and a new set of pads.

Re engaging babies - last time baby didn't engage til labour started, so am expecting same this time. And we were on due date, so I agree with the consensus that if your baby is engaged, it doesn't say much! My waters didn't break til halfway through labour too - and apparantly the hind waters broke before the fore waters?. ? This was in hospital not long before I was fully dilated, so I think I would be quite surprised if they went earlier this time. Have got some of those bed pads too - partly to use for leaking breast milk afterwards but I might get them out soon.

I am of those with dropped bumps - although it sounds uncomfy. I have got terrible heartburn/ reflux at night still and my bump is holding up my boobs! And with G cups that is quite a feat! Honestly, the baby has been doing somersaults recently I was starting to wonder if I'm growing a hyperactive child? Got asked if I was expecting twins the other day and I'm not?. but the movements - like a punch up in my belly - could make me think otherwise!

Tomlin my DD is interested in all the baby things but I just keep stressing they are for your baby sister, etc. And she seems ok with it and will put them back. I keep saying she is looking after things for her sister, etc? ?

ML am loving your updates - hope the boobs are calming down - I remember that so well from last time, ouch!

It's my last day at work today before mat leave starts. Its also my birthday? so I am taking it easy. Luckily not got too much to do yet?

alle01 · 23/04/2010 11:36

happy birthday! booboo...
great advise about the waters, and a very big thank you to who posted the linked to the web about warm-up labour, that is exactly what is happening to me, start-stops, including 15 hours of close contractions, and it was driving me crazy, mw keep saying i wasn't in labour, adding to my frustation... my bump has dropped until half way my front, is not uncomfortable, added bonus, i can actually breath, sleep and eat now, and some of my clothing fits again,...

hormonalmum · 23/04/2010 14:45

Sassles - I had a particular difficult time at work when I was expecting dd. I would make your grievances about the champagne known - it is not fair and no wonder you have been feeling very annoyed about it. I see that the Maternity Alliance has already been mentioned. They are very helpful. Good luck to you in sorting it out - I got very stressed when expecting dd and it did ruin some of my maternity leave as I wondered every day what letter was going to drop through my door next.

Happy birthday Boo Boo!

Sorry need to do the school run now, so no time for any other personals. Will check in again later.

memorylapse · 23/04/2010 16:17

a quick me post..I have mastitis..it was inevitable..Im in so much pain I cant feed or express from that side..I have a temp and feel like death..DH has gone to get my script and poor Olivia is crying but I cant pick her up..DH snapped at me and said none of this would have happened if I had bottlefed..WTF??!..Im getting no sympathy and he is just whining about how tired and stressed he is..Im going to give him a bloody home vasectomy if he doesnt shut up

memorylapse · 23/04/2010 17:22

another quick post..am off to hospital..temp has gone up to 39..need iv anti biotics..am so miserable..thank fully Olivia can come with me

sweetkitty · 23/04/2010 17:43

ML - oh no hope you feel better soon mastitis is horrendous, I only had it mild with DD3 and that was bad enough.

Who asked about waters, as you know I have had 3 and it has been different every time, DD1 was a little trickle whilst sitting on the sofa, I thought I had wet myself! It continued like a little trickle until she was born. I had a show about an hour after my waters went as well. DD2 had painful BHs which woke me up, came downstairs and DP came down to find me over the dining room chair we decided it wasn't BHs but the real thing. Her waters didn't go until a few mins before she was born, I was fully dilated but her head wasn't engaged, they popped my waters and she came gushing out behind them. DD3 was a bit of a pop and gush that woke me up, contractions kicked in about 20 mins later.

Everyone at toddlers was commenting on how neat I was and how high the bump is, one woman thought I was due in September I think I always carry high, never dropped or engaged with any of them, although it hasn't stopped them once they decide to come out. Getting loads of BHs and pressure but had that with the last 2 as well who were both overdue.

Am a bit upset now as found out for an induction you go in the night before, have a pessary, spend the night in hospital, then they assess you in the morning and pop your waters if they can, then send for your DH. I am so not used to this. I have never been away overnight from the DDs either. My idea of labour is go upstairs, jump on the bed and pull my bottoms and pants down and get on with it.

booboo - happy birthday

Heffa/Tomlin - DD3 doesn't really bother with the moses basket, I did show her a baby today and she patted it and went aww I think she was surprised it didn't get up and follow her though. I think they very quickly get used to a new sibling. DD1 was only 18 months when DD2 came along and that was fine and when DD3 came along they fought over who could get closest to her!

brightred - that's right I remember Helios.co.uk from last time will have to check it out

right I had best be off the house is a tip and have to get the big two to tidy it before dinner (Chinese again )

OP posts:
TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 23/04/2010 19:43

ML - for you, mastitis is horrible. I had it three times with DD and felt like death every time. Hope it clears up soon and you can both be home again.

Happy birthday booboo!

Angel - hope you enjoyed your lambshanks, sounds yummy

Thanks to everyone for info about waters breaking. When they broke mine in hospital it just gushed everywhere for about an hour so was very definite but I had heard that it could just be a trickle sometimes and wasn't sure how to be certain if it's waters or just wee . Hoping I'll just know if it happens. Not sure what to expect this time because of being induced last time.

SK - DD's got very interested in babies recently, she sits and looks through my baby books at all the photos. I think the moses basket thing is mostly because it's in her old room and she seems to quite like poking around in there.

Re induction - I had a pessary at midnight, then spent the night in hospital and had another pessary at 6am because nothing had happened. It was quite weird to be away from DH at that point (wasn't expecting it) but I didn't really sleep at all - wish I'd had more to read though so am making sure to pack magazines this time in case it happens again.

sweetkitty · 23/04/2010 20:39

Heffa - I know at least 3 friends who were induced first time and went themselves the next so you never know.

I am hoping it won't take that much to kick me off, I mean fourth baby in 6 years there cannot be much erm resistance downstairs the consultant seems to think popping my waters will be enough. I just hate hospitals, hate waiting about, hate being prodded and poked about with, hate being fussed over, what am I like?

OP posts:
Sassles · 23/04/2010 23:11

Hey all.

Will reply tomorrow and stop being so selfish and taling about me all the time! Just wanted to give you wee update.

After stewing all night instead of just having a good cry, I stepped off the train this morning with hubby and started crying. But hormonal too I think. Could not get it under control. Ended up being bit late as didn't want to walk in looking a state.

Still no mention of the champagne thing from up the line, but lots of people had noticed and thought it was bad. Will see how I feel aboutit next week. Think the guy just forgot about me, but that't the hurtful thing. The deal made them £6 million.

Update on interview - I called HR and they agreed that boss was unreasonable to suggest that if I missed date it was tough. Think she panicked a bit, but rightly so. They are going to bring my interview forward even further till next Thursday if they can. No-one can complain this is unfair as I have less time to prep than everyone else. Better than 2 days before due date. If I have baby before I can interview they will allow reasonable time for me to recover, but they can't positively discriminate because I'm pregnant either. Basically they would give me 2 weeks after birth at least. My friend pointed out that you have to take mandatory 2 week leave minimum after giving birth by law, so could not enforce before this.

My Dad is convinced that they have made up mind that they don't want me to get job as on mat leave and even if interview, I will not be successful. But I intend to make it hard for them to do that and interview is formally monitored and grading checked by HR, so it has to stand up to scrutiny at least.

Mostly annoyed that this ruined my last day at work, which should have been a nice day.

Going to prep for interview next week, then put it out my head until later and concentrate on relaxing and enjoying mat leave and looking forward to this wee baby!

TomlinTowers · 23/04/2010 23:14

Hi All

Thanks for the advice about dealing with potential sibling jealousy - DS1 has been lovely all day and has been kissing the bump and telling me all about what he is going to do for his sister when she arrives, so I'm hoping that will be the side that shows itself when LO is finally here!

Waters - I completely missed that mine had broken the first time round!! My hindwaters went, but I assumed that I was just unable to control my bladder anymore. Only when I noticed that I was leaking when sat down and when stood up that I thought to ring the MWs. Shock of my life when they called me in for check up at the delivery suite, and then told me I was staying in to deliver DS1! I hadn't even taken my hospital bags with me. So, on the lookout for extra leakage this time! However, my forewaters never went - they had to break them when I got to 10cm dilated so DS1 could be born.

SK - I am glad to hear that you know people who went naturally after being induced with first. I am really hoping that go naturally this time and don't have to be induced but I guess I have no control over that! Will have to wait and see what happens.

ML - hope the mastitis clears up soon. Never had it myself, but it sounds dreadful, and I think I read somewhere that the best treatment is for the baby to keep feeding on the infected boob to keep the milk flowing, which just sounds too painful to contemplate to me!! Hope the abs help.

Was thinking this morning that the LO's movements had got less, but paying for that thought now! Loads of BHs and kicks tonight! Although the movements have changed - less big turning movements and more kicks and prods -probably no more room in there! Might have to take the bump to bed for the night, see if that helps!

TomlinTowers · 23/04/2010 23:17

x-post Sassles - v glad the HR seem to be being reasonable, although still can't understand why they can't change interview date for all candidates and make it fair across the board....

They will have to come up with blimmin' good reason to turn you down for the job, because HR and you will be scrutinising your interview.

Best of luck with the interview and I hope it all goes well!

SquirtsMum · 24/04/2010 04:39

Morning all - blinking insomnia again, I'm slowing going crazy with the lack of sleep, can anyone recommend anything to help?

ML hope the abs work and the mastitis clears up soon
Sassles glad you've got an interview date sorted now, hope it goes well for you

Thanks to those that helped clear up the MW app advice

Last few days have felt really restless, can't sit down and do nothing but can't do anything standing up as lower half of me aches and don't have the brain capacity to actually finish a task - DP is used to coming home and finding stuff half done (half the washing on the line, half the washing up done, only one curtain drawn etc) I feel like a vegetable
Foolishly walked to a big shopping centre near home, still about 2 miles, usually about 30secs out the door I need to pee but this time it was BH the moment I left the house till the second I stepped out of Tesco's and nothing since then, the BH actually made me stop and sit down at one point - DP went nuts that I walked... apparently I shouldn't I my 'condition' bless him - I then ofc sent him to the garage to get me some ice cream

I assume bump has dropped as I can now take nice deep breaths but still looks like its supporting the norks and still have acid reflux the moment I hit bed. Not holding out any hope LO will be here soon, feel lots of little niggles and pains but nothing concrete, have resigned myself I'll be pregnant till the end of time!!

Hope the rest of you don't feel as rubbish as I do

xxx

fiveisanawfullybignumber · 24/04/2010 08:00

Haven't posted for a while, so much to catch up with!
Sassles, good news about the interview.
With DS1 my waters went & I thought I'd wet myself, was also shocked to be told I was in labour at 38 weeks, but that seems to be my standard time now. 4 DC's, never been to 40 weeks.
This one, DC5, has been giving me lot's of pains. saw MW on Thursday who was amazed at how much shape of bump had changed in 1 week.
She's now fully engaged and rolled over to the left. MW said if pains keep coming regularly for about 30-60mins, I should just go in, they might break waters and deliver her if they're quiet. I have a history of early and quick labours when waters go, DD1 was 25 mins, all other have been planned early inductions since then to 'manage' me.
If nothing happens before then, due to see consultant on Wed afternoon, also mum seeing consultant immunologist same afternoon. I really need to be there for that one.
For those trying to potty train now, I think you're all very brave. DD2 is 21-2 months and showing no signs of interest at all. in fact when she fills her nappy and we ask have you done a poo? If she has, she runs behind the curtains and shouts hiding hiding!
Take care all. Hope we get another new baby soon.

MarquiseDeMerteuil · 24/04/2010 08:22

Oh ML sorry to hear about the mastitis, it sounds painful. It can't be nice to be back in hospital again so soon after your last stay. I hope the antibiotics take effect quickly and you're back home again soon.

Sassles - good news that HR have brought your interview forward. Although you have less time than everyone else to prep, on the plus side it means you can prep in your own time at home while the others have to fit it round still being at work ! Fingers crossed that you don't have an early arrival now!

Squirtsmum - I hope you managed to get some more sleep after your night-time post. I find that doing some of the breathing exercises from yoga classes can help me drift off, and I think a while ago some others on here mentioned finding hypnobirthing CDs great for sending them to sleep (was that you Rachel?)

Well it was a fairly eventful day for me yesterday - last day at work before maternity leave and my growth scan to check the bump. Work were lovely, my whole team went to the pub for lunch and they gave me a great changing bag (skip hop via messenger), a cute elmer elephant toy for the bump and a fab set of travel sanctuary toiletries, which will go straight into my hospital bag! I'll miss them I think. I took great pleasure in setting my out of office notification on e-mail saying that I would be out of the office until May 2011!

Growth scan was an odd experience.... This might be a long bit of post - feel free to skip it if you're not interested!... I'm not sure how I feel about it. As expected, the baby measured small for dates (was measuring for about 34 weeks when I'm 37+3). It's current weight was estimated at 5lb4, all the measurements were on the 3rd percentile line. They said a small measurement isn't in itself bad, but the problem is that, as I haven't had any other scans since my 20week one, they can't tell whether it has been growing normally all along and then recently slowed down (which would be a worry); or whether it has been growing slowly but steadily all along (which is less of a problem).

So the sonographer referred me to the day assessment unit to see a consultant ("since you're here anyway"). But when I got down there, after handing my notes in and waiting about an hour, they came and told me that the first available appointment with a consultant is 4 June!! So suggested I should go to my local walk-in clinic on Thursday morning (i.e. in nearly a whole week's time!) so the consultant there can go over the scan results and decide whether to refer me for a further scan or not. I'm a bit . By the time I see the local consultant I'll be 38+2. If he/she wants me to have another scan, that will almost certainly take at least another week before the scan appointment, by which time I'll be almost on top of my due date! So part of me thinks they can't be that worried, while the other part of me is slightly concerned that, if there is a problem with the current rate of growth, it could be to the real detriment of the baby if they just let it go on for another two weeks without knowing.

It makes me all the more irritated that my GP or midwife didn't refer me for growth scans earlier when my bump measurements were obviously falling further and further behind the curve with each appointment. Then they would have been able to monitor the growth properly.

Sorry about that rambly bit. I'm not really asking for any advice, just needed to get it off my chest! DH has prescribed lots of rest and lots of food between now and the birth to try to feed the baby up. He took me to pizza express and bought me a tub of Ben and Jerry's and pack of choco leibnitz biscuits on the way home!

Have got a day at the races today with friends today, so will park myself on a picnic blanket in the sunshine and make DH run round putting bets on for me!

Hope everyone has a good day!

Arrghhh, sorry about the rogue apostrophe in it's in my post, my pet hate!!!! Should have read it through before posting instead of afterwards!

Sorry MDM that you are having such rubbish care in terms of monitoring LO's growth. I don't have any experience of this though everyone else I know who has been monitored has turned out to have had normal sized babies as the scans weren't that accurate.
It sounds as though you had a lovely last day at work and I know how satisfying it is putting that out of office message on

Went out with my NCT friends from my antenatal group with DD last night and I think I might be making some of them a little broody now so I'm looking forward to hearing some pregnancy announcements from them some time soon...
