JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 06/04/2010 09:48

Hello folks, sorry I haven't posted in an age, there's still nothing much to tell! Haven't really caught up on the thread beyond the last 20 or so posts, sorry. I'm just plodding along getting very achy and uncomfortable now, and increasingly anxious about the birth.

I've just been given loads of baby clothes, I've bought a double buggy, a pram, cot bedding etc so I feel more sorted, but haven't done my hospital bag yet but I'll be taking:

old navy blue nightie for the birth
few nighties for afterwards
nice new dressing gown and slippers
maternity pads and big pants
towel, flannel, toothbrush and toothpaste
showergel and moisturiser
hairbrush, bit of makeup and dry shampoo for the after photos (last time my hair was wet from the bath and there was no hairdryer so my hair looked greasy in all my after pics, grr!)
camera, extra batteries
phone and change
cereal bars and juice cartons
Lots of opaque plastic bags for washing, taking gifts home and when you don't want to carry a bloody towel through the ward.
paracetamol, arnica tablets, lactulose
book, paper, pen (for sending dp home with lists)
maternity trousers, feeding bra, big comfy top for going home

6 sleepsuits, 6 vests, a cardi, a hat and a blanket for the baby.
Nappies, wipes and vaseline
the carseat!!

sweetkitty · 06/04/2010 09:55

This is great actually reminding me of what I need like a fully charged camera!

I was just going to throw back on whatever I am wearing to go to the hospital as it's only 10 mins away then I will be straight back into my PJs.

Must sort out car seats today as well, I have a M&P one in the loft but it is a bit mouldy so quite fancy a new one.

Good tips on the books, magazines, ipods etc... as I found the long nights quite boring and lonely. I wanted dh to stay in too, but it wasn't happening and I wasn't ready to go home.

I think its a scary time to be left alone but I don't like being on my own. I know its for the benefit of the other women but its not my choice. However, you'll be fine and more than likely out in a day or two at most.

Potty Training - having a pj day so thought it might be worth a try. Not a good idea, dd was shouting wee wee as soon as the nappy came off so tried to encourage her to sit on the potty but she wasn't having it. Cue on large poo all over my pjs, carpet and dd's feet. I'll persevere till lunchtime, at least there shouldn't be anymore poo!

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 06/04/2010 10:21

Hollyoaks - I found the long nights really hard as well, have planned to buy lots of magazines and stuff this time round. I have my iPod as well, and got a smartphone for my birthday (cheap PAYG one) so that I can at least be in touch on email etc. I hated being alone without DH, but it was probably good that he was quite rested so could let me rest when I got home.

I really need to get my bag packed I think, maybe job for tomorrow.

rachelfruitloop · 06/04/2010 10:57

Welcome Alle, hospital bag is a big topic for me at the moment, too. I'm just putting the finishing touches on mine. I think you are doing the right thing having one in the car with extras in. I don't have a car, so it's all going in with me (I'd rather have too much than not enough, it's not so easy for DH to just pop home for things). With my DS, I ended up staying in hospital for 5 days and didn't have enough of anything. I had also gotten so big towards the end of the pregnancy that I only owned some yoga trousers and a pair of maternity jeans that fit as bottoms and I ended up leaking waters all over both of them during the course of the labour! Why I thought I still needed to wear bottoms at that point in labour is beyond me (clinging to dignity!) There was nothing at home for DH to bring in.(also we were moving house right after DS and I were discharged, so he was arranging furniture deliveries and picking up keys, etc - we were so naive!!) I don't know what I was thinking, I was really conscious of not "wasting" too much money on things for myself and so I ended up struggling a bit. This is the time to really make sure you're taken care of!

I can relate to you all about your DH not being able to stay with you at hospital, when I had my DS the hospital was very strict about visiting hours. I found that to be the most difficult thing, being on my own all night. It made me see that I wasn't as independent as I had thought I was and I found it terribly depressing. Being a mummy has helped in that respect, though! If this happens to you, just remind yourself that it's just temporary and you're going to be fine!

SK, Angel and JamesAGB thanks for sharing your lists as well, it's giving me a good idea about my own bag! Nice to hear from you again James!

Here's what I have for my bag:
mini toiletries/toothbrush
Lansinoh nipple cream
Dettol wipes
flannel
socks (5)
old pants (6)
Maternity pads (30)
Nursing pads (12)
Nursing bras (3)
yoga trousers (4)
front opening nightshirts (5)
dressing gown
slippers
towel
manual breast pump
bottle and teat
iPod and charger
travel clock
book
phone list
mobile charger
drinks (juice boxes, sports bottle of water)
snacks (dried fruit & nuts, cereal bars)
clary sage, tea tree and lavender oils
maternity notes
camera and batteries
pillow (they didn't have one for me part of the time when I had DS)

here's baby's bag:
muslins (3)
dummies (2)
blankets (3)
nappies (28)
sensitive wipes (I know this isn't recommended with newborns but I hated the cotton wool and water and quickly switched to these with DS and they were fine for him)
socks (5)
cardie (1)
cross front vests (in case of sore baby head!) (5)
long sleeved nightgowns (2)
vests with poppers (4)
scratch mitts (1)
hat (1)
going home outfit

SK for the blue things in your washing machine! I really hope the next 4 weeks go quickly for you, I am so sorry that you're suffering so much.

Angel thanks for the update on ML, I can't stop thinking about her and hope it's all going ok!

Hollyoaks you are brave to commence the toilet training! I hope it gets better quickly!
I am meant to take 3 iron tablets a day as well, I managed 2 yesterday but I'm struggling. Hopefully now that I'm done with the ABs the iron will go down better. Last night I thought of you KateyJane when I was swigging the Gaviscon, may need to reach for a bendy straw myself! I read that restless leg syndrome can be caused by an iron deficiency, so I'm going to try to be a good girl and persist with the tablets. I find it so weird that I have restless arms in the night instead of restless legs, but it must be the same kind of thing.

Gils I hope you didn't tire yourself out cleaning!! Hope you enjoyed the night to yourself!

I am really having trouble at night now. This baby decides to have a dance party at about 10pm, just about the time I'm ready to crash, continuing until 1 or 2 am. My DS was like this as well, so I am following my tradition of laying on the sofa watching Forensic Detectives until the wee hours or until I fall asleep. That was fine before I had DS but now I have to get up at 7am with DS no matter what and try to function. I find it so difficult. I'm not a morning person anyway! I am just lucky that he's such a good boy, he's let me snooze on the sofa a bit this morning while he watches Playhouse Disney. I think the baby is going to get him a Micro Pet toy as he keeps gazing at them in the toy shop window! Will probably give it to him at the same time he first meets his baby brother.

I hope everyone is coping ok today!

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 06/04/2010 11:01

I quite liked being alone at the hospital the first night, as I finally had my baby all to myself, to gaze at! Maybe I'm just greedy like that. I was obviously pleased to have dp back in the morning, and visitors etc, but all he did at night was sleep, feed and poo, there wasn't anything to fear. I was very uncomfortable though with 2nd degree tear and spd, so I say take those paracetamol and ask for extra pillows if you need them to get comfy.

Hollyoaks · 06/04/2010 11:27

Rachel - not brave, just mad I think. Wasn't going to bother until dh rang to say he isn't being paid today (already 5 days late!) and it won't be till next week. So a full week off work with no money, might as well try and do something productive if we're stuck in the house.

alle01 · 06/04/2010 11:48

thanks for your posts!, very reassuring to see that everybody is taking the same thinks to hospital, and that i am not the only one worrying about it.

kateyjane · 06/04/2010 12:31

Good morning (just) everyone.

alle - You sound much more prepared than me. I keep looking at maternity pads in the supermarket, then getting 'the fear' and putting them back thinking I'll get them next time Two of my babies were born in the evening/night and DH stayed with us all night, then we went home in the morning. This was only possible because we were allowed to stay in the delivery room. He would have had to go if we went on to the ward. I'm a bit like you, I hate the thought of him going, after DD1 was born he came back in the middle of the night and the midwifes begrudgingly let him in. I have never been more grateful to see him in my life!, but I am a big pathetic softy and I tend to get a post-birth high and don't sleep for ages - which I then really regret when I get home!

SK - at all the little blue things. I can't wait to know what we're having. I keep going off all our girl names, we were set on Florence Elizabeth until four weeks ago, but now I've changed my mind! I hope you are coping with your SPD. I really don't know how you are managing.

Hormonalmum - I'm waiting to get my carseat back from my friend as well. It's really frustrating isn't it! I can't even properly remember what style of maxi-cosi it is as it has been such a long time. I felt awful asking for it back because she is due just before me with DC2, but I can't afford another one -at least I know she's looked after it though. I hope you get yours soon.

Angel - I am totally with you on not being able to keep up with the children. DH couldn't get any holiday this time except the bank holidays, and DS is now out of full time nursery because of my mat leave - had idealistic visions of lots of quality time with him before LO arrives , poor thing, I think he would rather be a at nursery! The girls go back to school next week - think Halifax has had a different holiday to the rest of the country! I just haven't got the energy to do what we would normally do! Thank goodness for playdates with friends (= coffee and cake for the mums)I really hope your bump is less sore soon.

Tomlin - Thanks for the advice re Gaviscon. I keep meaning to ask and forgetting. Will try to remember this Friday.

Pamelat + Hollyoaks - I keep feeling excited, then terrified and I am definately not 'ready' yet. Can't imagine actually having a newborn in my arms yet.

ML - I hope things are going alright for you at the hospital and that they are taking good care of you.

Well my date has been moved back to 30/5 by all my recent scans, but I'm still looking at probably the first week in May at the moment as they want to induce at 36 weeks. Can't believe that's only 3 and a bit weeks away!! I suddenly need more time, because I've not been myself recently I don't feel anywhere near as prepared as usual.
A lovely lady who I made friends with on the antenatal ward last week has just had her beautiful DD at 29+4. She weighed 2pounds 15 ounces and is doing really well, breathing on her own and taking breast milk through a tube. She had bled really heavily all the way through her pregnancy and is overjoyed that she has got here safely. Again it just put everything into perspective for me.

Sorry if I've missed anyone off. Hope you all have a good day

rachelfruitloop · 06/04/2010 14:13

Hollyoaks about the week off and no money!!! How stressful for you guys!

Not that you asked , but when I started the toilet training with DS, I got a kitchen timer and set it for every 20 mins and then we'd excitedly shout "toilet time!" and run to the toilet. Sometimes it was successful and sometimes not. He'd get a sticker on a chart when there was success and also one for just trying, and when the chart was full he'd get a treat. By using the timer, we sort of got to know about how often he needed a wee, and set it for longer intervals. After a couple of weeks he was able to tell us when he needed to go (most of the time and with much reminding) and so we stopped using the timer. I found the timer to be very useful at the beginning though, when DS wasn't used to recognising when he needed a wee. Hope your day is going ok!

MarquiseDeMerteuil · 06/04/2010 15:48

Hello everyone, and welcome alle01!

I thought I was fairly prepared with my hospital bag, but realise now that buying a load of stuff and putting it in the cupboard hasn't actually got me very far! I now need to sort out what I actually need to take and get round to packing it into a bag or two!

Like others have said, I think I will take one bag with stuff for during and immediately after labour for me, and for the baby, in the hope that I will have an unassisted birth in the home-from-home bit of the hospital and be able to go home later the same day. Then I'll have a second bag to leave in the car with a couple of days' worth of things in case I have to go onto the ward for a longer stay.

I bought some zip-up packing net bags from Muji in different colours so I can put stuff for labour in one, stuff for the baby in another and stuff for immediately after the birth in a third one. I'll pack them all into the same bag but that way everything will be kept separate and organised and if i'm yelling for stuff, DH will be able to find it easily by just grabbing the right colour net bag. (At least that's the plan!!)

A quick question for the more experienced mums. Any recommendations for nappy bags? I've had a quick look but they seem so overpriced and a lot of them are too 'cutesy' for my taste. I was thinking of just getting something like a men's messenger bag (one of the ones that has separate pockets for keys, wallet, phone, laptop etc.) and using that. I thought I could get some different size washbags to throw in it with the baby stuff to keep it organised, and get a little travel fold-up changing mat. Would that work? Or do the more experienced mums think it's necessary to have a specially-made changing bag? I guess opinion is bound to vary, but I'm interested to know your thoughts.

14 days left at work for me now, and can't wait to finish, as my mind is completely on all the things I want to get done at home! Baby is due 5 weeks today, it sounds so soon!

Sorry for lack of personal comments, a bit hard to keep scrolling back through everything to see what people have said while I'm at work.

Haven't seen any posts from Littleowls on here in a while, hope she's ok.

alle01 · 06/04/2010 15:56

thank u, very nice thread...
i can't believe you still working, marquise, i packed up weeks ago...
it is my first baby, but i got from my sister that you need a proper bag, try to get one as a present, or borrowed, in any case, look for a cheap one on ebay, even if it is second hand, it needs to be functional, not pretty.

sweetkitty · 06/04/2010 16:29

I have just ordered some nice BFing PJs from the La Redoute website AND they are doing 30% off your first item and 20% off everything else. Worth a look, also bought a BFing top in the sale, usually don't bother but it was a nice top.

Nappy bags, oh I have had loads matching the pram not matching the pram etc. Haven't really thought about it much yet, I have two pannier bags for the P&T which are like rucksacks so could use them I suppose.

A cheaper option would be to get a childrens rucksack and use that, it doesn't have all the fancy compartments, bottle holder, nappy changing mat etc but it's not as bulky and you can still carry around your handbag. have also seem people use a large handbag instead and just carry one bag. I also have a demin rucksack type from TK Maxx check them out they usually have designer bags at a fraction of the cost.

Hospital bag is hard isn't it as you don't know how long you will actually be in for. Maybe two bags are needed, one for the first day and then another one at home for DH/Ps to bring in if you are delayed. Even for my HBs I had a bag packed just in case and also it keeps everything in one place for DP.

Forgot about arnica, lansinoh, own stash of cocodamols, vaseline as well.

OP posts:
rachelfruitloop · 06/04/2010 16:47

MDM I got a basic black and grey rucksack for DS and put a travel changing mat in that. I keep my gear in the front pocket and baby stuff in the big pocket, and DH doesn't feel ashamed carrying it. The over-the-shoulder type bags didn't do it for me as I found them cumbersome and hard to manage to keep on a shoulder whilst pushing the push chair. (though a changing bag can usually be slung over the handle of the pram, my rucksack fit over the handles of my Maclaren as well). That's my very un-glamourous changing bag solution! Reminds me, need to go rucksack shopping, the one we got for DS changing stuff is falling apart now, nearly 3 years on! I do look at the cute ones and think how lovely some of them are, but for me it's function over form all the way in this department. They get filthy so fast!

SK thanks for the tip about the La Redoute website, there are some nice things on there, will definitely give it a closer look tonight!

I have my growth scan tomorrow, should be interesting to see how big they say baby may be now! Looking forward to seeing him again!

Gils · 06/04/2010 16:57

Quick me post

Can anyone tell me how much discharge/leakage is normal. Been getting quite a lot of discharge for a while now. Sorry for tmi but I am literally leaking just now, pants soaking!
Discharge is yellow/ting of green. I know I should be worried about green. Can't remember ever being this late with DD

AnAngelWithin · 06/04/2010 17:23

gils i am in the same boat too! I almost feel unsafe and 'ahem'....roomy...down there....

sweetkitty · 06/04/2010 17:36

Gils - loads of green discharge could be a sign of infection, best to get it checked out.

I feel like I have to hold everything in downstairs with my pants these days, it feels like it is all at my knees

OP posts:
pamelat · 06/04/2010 18:53

Hello all, welcome Alle.

I think DS may have moved! I wont find out until next Weds but last night there was a lot of movement and now I feel a huge pressure on my pelvis (I can sympathise with the pants holding things in sensation ) and I am sure his head may have gone down, really hope so!

Was going to pay for a private scan but probably too late at 35 weeks, will have a quick google.

Back to work today and what a relief after 5 tough days with DD, and thats despite DH being around for 4 of them. He said he was going crazy by the end, I keep telling myself another 9 months and she will be out of the terrible 2s!!

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 06/04/2010 19:46

pamelat, mine's confirmed as head down, I felt big movements and sudden pressure downstairs like you, so just try and see if you can feel feet kicking at the top, a rolling sensation at the pelvis from the head turning, and hands moving/tickling you at pocket level!

DorotheaPlenticlew · 06/04/2010 19:59

Hello everyone, again haven't posted for ages but just read through to catch up.

So Memorylapse is in hospital? How exciting/scary -- hope all is well after the difficult time she's had lately. Was quite about some of the problems she encountered.

Gils and AnAngelWithin, will you be ringing your MWs or someone for advice? Hard to give you any useful advice here, as it's so hard to say what's "normal" re discharge, but probably better safe than sorry; hope you get some reassurance soon.

Re changing bags: I vote for getting a purpose-built one because all the separate pockets etc do come in really handy; I've found ours invaluable and still actually use it sometimes despite DS being 2.8 (well, you know ... no car so we go out on foot and still carry loads of bits and bobs around with us depending on the day's plans, plus all my stuff). Having an insulated bottle/food bit in the bag is also useful in the early stages, even if breastfeeding, as you still may want to carry a bottle of expressed milk with you (or send someone else out with one). And the final clincher is that ours has a specific bit in one pocket to snap your keys onto, which I check with religious care every day because I had a few locking-keys-in-flat nightmares during the stage where we weren't getting much sleep. I know we could have created our own kit with separate purchases of a big bag and some wee containers and whatnot, but by the time you do that it costs almost as much anyway, and I like the unfussiness of a bag that's been designed for the job.

Really glad you've all been posting your packing lists; was struggling to recall all the bits and pieces that we'll need. Got some super-strong arnica from Neals Yard last week, so that's one item crossed off (I know it's kind of absurd to call any homeopathic stuff "strong", but just speaking relatively ...). I'm not generally a Believer when it comes to homeopathy but was persuaded to buy some potent stuff last time and whatever the reason, I did heal up from emcs really fast.

We have a scan on Thurs (at 36 weeks on the dot!) to check the position of the placenta, which at 20 weeks was low, but posterior. With such a late scan, will it actually be harder to see the baby? I imagine her scrunched up in a tight little ball at the mo -- that's how it feels anyway. Late-stage scan experiences, anyone? (Am half-expecting to be told they had the sex wrong and she's actually a boy, as happened to someone I used to work with.)

KaffaCakes · 06/04/2010 20:36

My belly button just popped out!

By the way, hello everyone. Hope you're all well, and glad to see you're counting down the days to your maternity leave MDM! Only 13 working days left for me...

I've packed my hospital bag, but somehow it seems a little too empty. I need to double check I've packed a towel and a spare dressing gown, I have a feeling I'll forget to pack a 'post baby' hospital bag so thanks for reminding me, I'll stick another post it note to my front door to remind me.

I've purchased the Cath Kidston nappy bag- the cowboy print one so DP doesn't get too embarassed carrying it, he vetoed the pretty polka dot one . It doesn't fit a great deal of baby stuff in terms of a hospital bag for baby, but will be great for everyday things as it has a changing mat, bottle insulator and lots of roomy pockets for all sorts of baby gubbins.

34+1 now, baby has been wriggling all over the place today, but luckily the head is still resolutely downwards, though heaven knows where it's bottom and knees were today! The midwife will have a good old rummage around with it tomorrow no doubt. Does anyone find their midwife rather rough with their bump?

brightredballoon · 06/04/2010 20:49

Kaffa I have an "outy" too

MDM I vote for both purpose built changing bag or likewise if you have a favourite bag its easily changed into everything you need by putting toiletry bags in it so you know where everything is. Nothing worse than fishing round the bottom of a bag for a dummy/nappycream/calpol sachet etc etc. I was in TK Maxx the other day and they had some lovely branded ones (is it Hip Hop or something) and an Oli oli one for a fraction of the retail price so worth a look in there too.

Girls, I got my CS date today but am going to keep it a surprise so the first you hear about it will be me posting my birth announcement from my phone when it has all happened. I am really excited, feels very real now.

After my appointment I went along to the NCT shop (shop being a warehouse!) and bought the mesh knickers which get good reviews for any other csection ladies - they come up really high, hold a pad but will let your scar breath. I also picked up a breastfeeding widget its like a v shape pillow but smaller and not as shaped so I can use it now to support bump in bed then can use to support my lower back in hossie chair or use as pillow and then use to rest baby on when feeding. I didnt get one for my first child and found I hunched my shoulders when I fed her or else used living room cushions which were a right pain to wash if she posseted after a feed so when I had 2nd child I bought one (got ruined in the loft though - should have stored it properly) so am glad I have got this again.

I also bought some Mamas and Papas sheets and my goodness I cannot believe how much thicker and nicer they feel to my Babies R Us and Mothercare sheets. They were a lot more expensive but I bought cot size so I can fold in half and tuck right under the moses basket mattress so I wont buy different sizes.

Sorry for such a me, me , me post. I feel a bit rough tonight with a sore throat and very tired. Think a nice hot chocolate and an early night is in store for me tonight, hope you are all ok and can't wait to hear how ML is getting on

Pamelat - hope LO's head has gone down! I've been feeling a huge pressure low down for the last couple of days and the bump has changed. Up till now it was highish and my belly button had popped out but the bump is very low all of a sudden and belly button has gone back in. It's very noticeable so I think the head may have engaged (LO was already head down).

MDM - I have a Skip Hop Duo bag which my sister got for me last time. It is lovely and quite convenient (some clever features like a magnetic close so you don't have to faff around with zips). I used to take it everywhere but tbh, these days I mostly just have wipes/spare nappy/snacks in my handbag and use the changing bag for days out. I like having big bags though

Gils - I have the same problem although not green. I'd get it checked out, but hopefully nothing. I'm just assuming that my pelvic floor is knackered and LO isn't helping by rolling around down there so much.

Dorothea - sonographer told me that it is harder to get good pictures of the baby at later scans because they're so much bugger and have so much room. I have another scan tomorrow (34 +2) so will see

ALLE- Welcome aboard please dont worry about your DH leaving. I was dreading it but it really isnt that bad. Your newborn will keep you busy

ANGEL- With you on the sore spots. They really hurt

Thanks for all the lists of your hospital bag, im planning to pack mine this week. Think my lists and yours tally up well

SK- at the "blue" washing machine.

RACHEL- the egg timer idea has been banked for when we start with DD.

MDM- nappy bag- just make sure it has plenty of compartments. The bag that came with my pram was crap and i had to basically tip everything out to find what i needed. very annoying!
You can get changing bags in plain black messenger style. mothercare

I treated myself to a nice OiOi messenger bag this time as I still need a few bits for DD too.

DORETHEA- Hope the placenta has moved.

ML- Glad to hear things will finally happen for you next week.. How exciting

Feeling really rough here lately. The acid reflex is making me sick and my tummy is soooo uncomfortable. Stretchmarks are itching like crazy and growing rapidly... no amount of oil or cream has helped
Really starting to get fed up of it all now. 6 weeks to go.

Couldnt get an appointment for my 34 week check this week so have to wait till the following week.

Finding it very hard to get comfy at night now too. Keep trying various pillow variations but when I do get comfy I have to sit up again as the acis reflux kicks in. Lay there last night panicing about BF this one and if I will have the same problems as I did with DD etc.

Had a lovely day today with a friend and her Little girl. She is slightly older than DD and loves mothering her. My friend is 14 weeks pregnant so nice to have a good old "baby" chat.
We took the girls to the park, fed the ducks and had a picnic. It was a lovely sunny day and although knackering was great fun.
