TomlinTowers · 04/04/2010 22:57

Hi all

Happy Easter!

Just a quick post to catch up

ML - sounds like you are having a nightmare. Hope they get you stabilised. I can't understand why no specialists are on call over the BH weekend??

Kateyjane - it may not be much use now, but you can get gaviscon on free prescription from your GP, which cuts down on costs. I didn't even go to the GP, just rang and left a message with reception saying I was pg and had heartburn, and a day later a prescription for Gaviscon liquid and tablets magically appeared for me. Might be worth trying?

Hormonalmum - sounds a nightmare about the car seat. Hope you get it back soon.

Pamelat - I'm glad your tooth is better.

SK - am amazed at you putting a wash on within 5 hours of giving birth! In my experience, my local hospital try and discharge you straight from the delivery room even if you are a first time Mum. The only way you are admitted on to a ward is if you have had some sort of intervention (c-s obv, but also epidural/pethidine) or if baby not latching properly for feeding. Otherwise you get a wash down from the nursing assistant and off you go!

I was talking about this with my Mum after DS1's birth (she had my sister in the same hospital as I had DS1) and in her day, you were discharged from the main hospital to a sort of cottage hospital where you could stay for a week, get your meals cooked for you, Dads/family could come in any time to see you, and you could basically have a rest for a week to concentrate on getting feeding established and recuperating with other new Mums. I think that sounds lovely!! But sadly, the cottage hospital is now an out of town shopping centre, so will just have to get on with things at home!!

MarquiseDeMerteuil · 05/04/2010 10:04

Morning all.

A brilliant birth story to start with. A good friend of mine gave birth to a little boy two days ago, 6lb15, two weeks before her due date. Her first baby, he arrived within 30 minutes of them getting to hospital, and she said it was nowhere near as bad as she had been dreading, "four pushes and he was out", not even time for gas and air!

Pamelat - really glad you managed to find someone to deal with your tooth, it must be such a relief , but terrible that you had to suffer for so long before getting the treatment you needed.

Pigley, Forces, Hormonal, SK and others talking about presents from the baby to other DCs, I still remember what my DSis gave me when she was born, and I was only just 3 at the time! It was a box of green duplo lego blocks. I'm pretty sure my DPs had put it in her hospital crib with her, so I sort of saw both at the same time.

Rachel, Booboo and Katnkankles, the heartburn sounds like a bit of a nightmare. It's not something I've experienced, but you have my sympathy.

Heffa, glad you had a good holiday. Did you get loads of snow up there? Was thinking of you and Den with all the news stories about heavy snow in the highlands this week!

Hormonal - about the lady with your carseat, what a cheek! Can you try and get her e-mail address or phone number and contact her directly rather than through her mother, or failing that, see if she's on facebook and send her a facebook e-mail message, which you can do even if she's not a friend.

Thanks everyone for the happy birthday wishes. I had a lovely day, party went well and it was great to catch up with some friends I hadn't seen for a while and to get to meet their LOs. At one point there were 5 children aged 2 and under in the house, which is a first for us. It was a bit chaotic and I'm still finding crisps, breadsticks and toys in really random places! It was a very good test for what we'll need to do to child-proof our house when our LO starts to become mobile!

Apart from the party, we've had a pretty productive weekend sorting out the nursery. Yesterday I fitted the blackout blind and curtains and put a first coat of paint on a set of bookshelves. I'll finish those off today and we'll build the cot, then it's all basically in place. DH has been finishing off painting all the skirting boards, window frames and picture rails in our bedroom, then we're finally finished with the decoration (3 years after moving in!!).

Hope you all enjoy the bank holiday Monday. I've just realised that I've been so busy the last few days that I've somehow got through easter weekend without eating any chocolate . Off to rectify that now!

pigleychez · 05/04/2010 13:55

FORCES- Im sure one of the other mums would be happy to help you out. Years back a colleague was due her second and she rang me at 2am to ask if I could have her DD. I happily did and took her DD to Nursery with me that day. Was lovely to be able to help them out.

HEFFA- Glad you enjoyed your holiday. The photos look lovely

PAMLET- Glad the hospital managed to take the pain away

ML- Hope things are going OK in hospital

HORMONALMUM- How annoying about Carseat.. def keep bugging till you get it back.

TOMLIN- That cottage idea sounds lovely.

MDM- Enjoy finishing off the nursery

Thankfully DH and I are both better now. Think we got away with a mild case.
Visited family yesterday and DD got spoilt! Thankfully not too many Eggs though. My mum had made Easter shaped Gingerbread biscuits which she loves so was very happy with them.

Just returned from town where I treated myself to a lovely Lilac Leather holdall. Now I can start on packing a hospital bag. It makes it all feel more real all of a sudden.

Was saying to DH that this pregnancy is so different to my first. So many things I didnt experience with DD. I keep getting twinges in my bits, like sharp pains.. Almost like the baby is making its way out. Really makes me stop in my tracks and is most worrying when out in town or something.

Bought DD a bubble machine in town today too so when she wakes from her nap, we plan to get some jobs done out there whilst she plays... What are the chances hey!?

rachelfruitloop · 05/04/2010 15:12

Hello All,

Welcome back Heffa, glad you had a lovely time!

MDM no chocolate yet!?! I hope you've made up for lost time! Great work getting the nursery sorted, I hope you and DH are enjoying getting things ready for your LO! So happy to hear that you enjoyed your birthday and had a nice party - finding crisps, breadsticks and toys in really random places is definitely a glimpse into your future!

Hormonal I hope you get your car seat back soon without too much more aggravation! I had a similar annoying experience with my car seat as well, a friend borrowed mine to keep at her DS's nursery as he went to the same one as a mutual friend's DS, just in case either of them ever needed to take the other's DS home. She ended up taking her DS out of that nursery and months later when I asked her about where my car seat was she just told me to ask our mutual friend to find out if the nursery still had it. I felt awful as it wasn't even our other friend's idea, so I just rang the nursery to ask about it. They had no idea what I was talking about so I felt like an idiot. In the end I had to keep bothering my friend about it and she finally called the nursery and chased it up for me and I got it back. It was so stressful though, I'll think twice about lending my stuff out again! It's tough to say no when you know you aren't using it at the time it's being asked for, though, isn't it?! I would never dream of being so lax with someone else's belongings, so it's annoying when others are so disrespectful when you're being nice and trying to help them out.

Katnkankles and BooBooMonster I am so sick of the heartburn now, too! It's waking me up in the middle of the night and I feel like I could be sick! BooBoo, my DH and I seem to be taking turns on the sofa and at this stage I think we're both sleeping much better apart as well, sad but true!

SK I am really hoping that I feel as great as you did after giving birth to your DD2 (that is amazing!), I've decided not to go for the elective caesarian mainly as that's a guaranteed hospital stay and longer recovery time, so I'm hoping they will kick me out of hospital pretty quickly if there are no complications! I don't know what I'll do if I have to stay in 5 days again! Though saying that, I feel so much more confident about giving birth than I did when I first joined this thread (and was set on having a CS). I was really at a low and was so glad to find the support I needed here! I'll have to look at the hospital stay as a chance to rest if I do end up needing to stay for a bit.

rachelfruitloop · 05/04/2010 15:14

Sorry I ended that so abruptly, pressed post message accidentally! But I think that's probably enough for now! I hope you're all well and getting some rest!

brightredballoon · 05/04/2010 16:12

Hope everyone is enjoying their bank holiday. DH is working so the kids and I went to the shopping centre and then met DH for a coffee. I found out they have creche in this centre so took advantage and put the kids in there whilst I got a quiet look around the shops. Mostly spent it in a home type shop and bought all sorts of nik naks that I don't need but thought they looked cool and would make life easier.... no doubt they will be in the charity shop bag in a few months having realised they are just junk!!

MDM sounds like you are making great progress in your preparations, lovely to say you are "done"!!

Rachel - I can relate to your feelings about feeling low in the beginning and now having had support you are in a better place to positively feel confident in your birth method choice. Although I am the opposite (firmly decided on an elective cs) I also was feeling quite lost at the begging but from being able to rant and put my feelings down here and get feedback etc I feel far more happier.

Its so exciting the nearer we get to the due dates, its a huge long list to get through too!

KIds are needing help with their paintings now, gotta run...

Gils · 05/04/2010 16:44

Hope you are all enjoying your bank holidays. Unfortunately DH went back to work yesterday and I am working today due to month end (however girl I am training has been given day of!)

DD is staying with my sister tonight so have an empty house, will probably run round like a headless chicken doing housework

Arrived at work this morning to find out one of the girls nieces has had a baby - was due on 5th May, scary! One of my friends also had a wee baby boy yesterday called Finlay. Just over a week early.

Pamelat - glad your tooth is finally pain free

FORCES- Im sure one of the other mums would be happy to help you out. Years back a colleague was due her second and she rang me at 2am to ask if I could have her DD. I happily did and took her DD to Nursery with me that day. Was lovely to be able to help them out.

PAMLET- Glad the hospital managed to take the pain away

HORMONALMUM- It def puts you of letting people borrow things in future. Why should you be chasing them all the time?!!

MDM- Glad you had a good birthday

ML - hope everything stabilises for you soon.

Made DH promise we can get lo mattress for crib this weekend - something always seems to crop up and we don't do it. Need to get ourselves organised. Have basics from DD but want buggyboard, sling and silly things like longer bath mat etc

sweetkitty · 05/04/2010 16:59

Hope everyone is having a good bank holiday Monday. I don't know what is going on with this little boy today but he is not behaving himself. Had a shower this morning and when I got out it was as if he was on a nerve or something as I felt really sore in my well fanjo area, then felt like I needed the toilet a lot, a lot of soreness and pressure. It was agony and brought tears to my eyes. I got on my hands and knees for a while to see if that would shift him and thankfully it did a bit but I have felt so sore today. The DDs had a party today so luckily DP was here and looked after DD3 so I could sit then made lunch then sent me to bed for an hour but even now I am feeling the most horrible pressure in my bum. This is excluding the usual SPD nightmare. Feel very low just now and thinking how the hell am I going to cope with the next 4 weeks or so

Didn't want to brag about feeling fab after giving birth sorry if it came across like that, I think I go on a sort of post birth high and feel on top of the world. Especially with DD2 the relief of getting that huge weight out and hardly being in pain anymore was brilliant. I recovered so quickly after her birth. DD1's I was more shellshocked and had loads of stitches and DD3 I was a bit wobbly for a few hours. My friend loves being pregnant and hates life with a newborn I am the total opposite.

My Mother likes to tell that "in her day" you were in hospital for 10 days after the birth and for the first 5 were not allowed out of bed even for the toilet! The babies were taken away at night to allow you to sleep and recover and during the day were brought to you every 4 hours for a bottle, the rest of the time they were in a nursery. Oh how things have changed. This from the woman who has never lifted a finger to help me after I have had a baby and moaned about her lunch when she came to visit 2 days after DD2 was born. A lot of us have no family close by and couldn't stay in hospital for 10 days.

Sorry mini rant over.

ML - did anyone else see her FB status she is in hospital having contractions and if it continues will be having a CS. She is only a day behind me so almost 36 weeks which is OK is she has to have a CS I suppose. ML if you are reading this hope you are both OK and we are thinking of you x

pigley - I must get off my (very sore) bum and get my bag packed

MDM - glad you had a nice time, DP often says our house is like a childrens party except none of them ever leave lol. You sound very organised as well

hormonalmum - so annoying about your car seat. I think it is only natural to be anxious and worried about the birth, I know I am, not matter how many times you do it. Remember second time it is, more often than not, a lot easier, like your body having done it once knows exactly what it is doing.

Tomlin - our hospital do an Express Delivery now one hour after the birth, if I am induced and able to I am going for that, I am a home body and hate being away from home. Some of my friends were talking today about wanting a night in hospital realxing with just the new baby and I can see the advantages but I know I just want to be home.

Right have talked enough better go and think about dinner, then DP will be doing baths.

OP posts:
pamelat · 05/04/2010 18:24

Gosh just read about ML and contractions, thinking of you ML.

Doesn't it bring it home.

Anyone feel "ready". As long as baby ok, I feel that I could crack on with it now. Already feels like a lot of waiting around and 5 weeks to go technically!

TomlinTowers · 05/04/2010 20:24

Good luck ML, fingers crossed that everything turns out OK, whichever way it goes.

SK - wow, one hour after birth is good going - I don't think I'd even been washed by that time in my local hospital! I certainly know that a night on the ward is not relaxing - all the newborns crying, trying to feed, not sleeping because you can't quite believe that you're not pg any more and your baby is there - I can understand not wanting to stay in hospital!

Went to Asda today and stocked up on stuff for my hospital bag - bought all my maternity towels, mini toiletries etc. Came home and sat and stared at it for ages - suddenly all sinking in now! And then to read about ML - DH is getting the bag down from the loft tomorrow and it is being packed asap!

Hollyoaks · 05/04/2010 20:28

Rachel - my iron prescription has just been increased from 1 a day to 3 but I find once I have the third they make me feel really sick and give me the runs .

MDM - belated happy birthday

ML - hope your feeling better

Pamelat - glad your mouth is feeling better. Swinging between being ready and excited to being terrified and can't believe how fast this pregnancy is going.

Presents - dd is getting a couple of Disney princess dolls and a new baby doll from the baby.

Nursery - it is now complete, got a new chest of drawers from Ikea and added a clothes rail and shelves to the fitted wardrobe. We now have a bag of neutral newborn clothes back from dsis so once thats washed tomorrow and put away we'll be done. Just need to pack hospital bag now

Hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend, if you got one.

alle01 · 06/04/2010 07:31

hi, everyone.
this is my first baby and i only have like 3 weeks to go,...i think i'm ready, or i should be, got the cot, the bath stuff, clothes washed, car seat and pram and even a sling, but everywhere i look i find something else; i have my hospital bag ready but i think i put to much in it, i'm going to have 2 bags: a essential one and other with the double up stuff in case i stay in hospital, mine seems to be famous for getting rid of you at first chance, also for kicking out husband at first chance, i am not looking forward to stay alone at night...
i also have terrible hearburn, but is easing now, although i need to sleep propped up in pillows, otherwise i am sick through the night, and that is not nice,....
hormonalmum- it is not only terriblethat your socalled friend is not giving back your car seat promptly, but also that she is allowed someone to take it away, gotta be careful with those, how you know that lady hasn't damaged it in anyway or been in an accident, i got mine from my sister i know i can trust,...

good luck everyone, should not be long now...

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 06/04/2010 07:34

MDM - glad you had a good birthday Not too much snow, the cottage we stay in is quite sheltered so there was snow on top of all the mountains but we were fine. Quite nice weather actually

Hormonalmum - hope you get your carseat back!

Re presents for baby: DD is getting a giant version of her favourite cuddly bunny from the baby and some garden toys from us.

Hope everything is well with ML, her status was a bit worrying.

Had a very busy weekend seeing friends unexpectedly which was lovely. Have DD's godmother coming round this afternoon so that will be nice (we don't see each other very much and she got engaged over the weekend so I'm looking forward to it).

Hollyoaks · 06/04/2010 08:14

heffa - just caught ML's status on fb, no update as of yet. Hope she's ok, will just have to keep checking and hope that we don't get our first May baby this early. Fingers crossed.

Alle01 - welcome to the thread, congratulations and good luck. I think your hospital bag sounds about right for a first baby.

alle01 · 06/04/2010 08:20

yeah, i wrote the list 3 times to trim it down to reasonable, and then took half the stuff out of the bag, and i still have to get it in two bags, in as needed basis, dh is frighten i will consider the kitchen sink an essential next. he is gonna have to carry it...

AnAngelWithin · 06/04/2010 08:59

morning all.

gosh I am struggling to keep up with my kids this holiday! FIL took them to the park for 2 hours the other day for me, then we were round at the IL house all day yesterday they were playing in the fields, but the little so and so's are still hyper!! I can't wear them out whatever! DD1 is 100% better now thank goodness. They are all upstairs right now arguing non stop! DS1 is the worst for it, he is such hard work right now, I can honestly say that I can't cope with him . Just washed dd2s bed as she wet the bed (for the first time ever since potty training!!!...shes 4 now) So hopefully put that on the line and fingers crossed it won't rain. Tumbler still not fixed.

I've had a real 'sore' spot near the top of my bump. Almost feel bruised inside. It makes moving a bit painful! That combined with about 3 hours sleep her night max, means I am on a right grump lately!

Alle01 welcome to the thread

Heffa, ML text me this morning, shes waiting on seeing the consultant and another scan.

Hollyoaks, won't be long before all those little drawers are filled!!

Hormonalmum what a nightmare about the carseat. I had similar after dd1, even though in the end I got it back, I didn't trust how safe it was after finding out how it was treated so I bought another one. I've had to buy a brand new one this time anyway as the only car seat we had was pink and seeing as I haven't found out the sex this time!! Plus we got a maxicosi thats compatible with our zapp for the short journeys we all make together as boot space will be limited with all 7 of us in the car!

SK bless you, its hard keeping up with the others, and I haven've even got SPD, I don't know how you do it!

Pamelat, yes, I feel 'ready' now, if the baby happened to arrive today then so be it! Bring it on! As long as its healthy!

Gils I hope you had a good evening and DIDN'T spend it cleaning??

alle01 · 06/04/2010 09:06

i don't know how you managed with another 2 children, i can hardly cope and dh takes care of himself,...i am panicking about the hospital bag, any advise on what you have taken before and use/didn't need? also concern about the hospital stay, i'll chain myself to my husband so they cannot throw him out.

AnAngelWithin · 06/04/2010 09:14

alle i have 4 other children!

I have one small bag for hospital for me and one for the baby. In my bag I have got:

shirt for birthing in
1 pack of maternity pads
6 breastpads
washbag with travel size toiletries in
hairbrush and bobbles, socks, pants (inc disposable ones)
Nursing bra
1 pair of (red!) PJs
Some ballet pumps that I can wear with anything!
Pair of trousers (stretchy ones)
2 Nursing tops
Thin cardi
Towel
Book to read
Purse with change in for carpark and any mazazines fromt the shop etc
Few cereal bars and cartons of juice
Phone charger
Ipod

As long as you have the bear essentials to get you through the first few hours, your DH can bring more in later on when he visits!

alle01 · 06/04/2010 09:17

i think my bag is quite similar, and we are planning in leaving a second bag with more clothes for me and baby and extra toiletries in the car, so he can bring it in if we need it, if not, everything will be handy at home for a couple of days,...

sweetkitty · 06/04/2010 09:18

alle - right this is what I am taking in my bag, if I do go to hospital that is:

Baby
3 babygros
3 vests
shawl
scratchmitts
2 hats
nappies
wipes
blanket

Me
PJs x 2
nightdress
sanitary towels 1 pack
maternity mats 1 pack
bras x 2
breastpads about 12
toiletry bag with the usual things in it

erm think that's about it really mine is the absolute basics, I remember with DD1 having all this stuff packed, CDs, spritzer in case I got hot, flannels etc and you know what she was that fast I didn't open my bag until after she was born but that is me, some people are there for hours. I might pack some juice and chocolate for us both as well.

I am sure some of the others will have better bags packed.

I still need to sort out a car seat then I will just stick it in the car, that's a good tip to have the seat in the car and know how to get it in and out before the baby is born (can you tell I made that mistake before).

With DD1 I had her at 4.22am and then they took me to a ward and DP went home for a bit at 8am, TBH I wasn't too bothered, I think he went had a shower and a few hours sleep as he had been up all night. I didn't sleep I just kept looking at her thinking OMG she is here couldn't quite believe it. When he came back I had a list ready for him for Mothercare as we were a bit unprepared!

My washing machine looks weird today there is a whole load of baby blue things in it I can't stop looking at it and grinning. DD1 has been helping me and getting very excited.

OP posts:
alle01 · 06/04/2010 09:19

i just can't relax!!!! dh says i need to stop watching programs and reading website, i am also worrying about my weight gain, baby size, what can go wrong, do i have everything....????

he might be right, just trying to think of something else

sweetkitty · 06/04/2010 09:20

angel - I forgot pants lol, I have bought some Asda basic ones 3 for a £1 in a big size.

OP posts:
alle01 · 06/04/2010 09:25

that was easy for me, i used to be a size 22, and i did not get so big yet, so i am using those, lucky i didn't throw them out.

on another note, i just want my husband to stay with me in hospital until i go home, any chance the hospital is going to let that happen....???, maybe if a make a fuzzz.......

Carikube · 06/04/2010 09:34

alle - DD was born at half past midnight and DH was with me until about 5am but he was just falling asleep in the chair as he was so exhausted (I was actually quite worried about him driving home but fortunately home was very close). He was relieved to get out for a few hours' sleep and as I was trying to get a couple of hours as well I really didn't mind him not being there - he was back again by about 10am or so for visiting.

alle01 · 06/04/2010 09:38

i think i'll make him stay awake, .... maybe you're right and i am just panicking, i will feel diferently in the day
