stac cant believe you've got snow! Its nearly april lol. Im staying in today as well, going to venture out later to tesco and see my mum.
LO has been kicking me alot this morning too

Jojobil · 30/03/2010 13:32

Hi girls It was raining all morning here, but now the sun has come out I don't envy snow though!!! I really want the spring to properly come!

I got woken up by lovely tulips being delivered from my good friend as it's my birthday tomorrow It has really made my day!
I went to get some clothes as I am going out tomorrow for dinner with a few friends and the clothes I got on the internet do not fit me that well. I got 6 lovely tops in a non maternity department they are in XL and L sizes and fit very nicely so I am pleased!

I forgot who asked about a holiday - sorry! But Egypt is apparently fantastic at this time of the year! It is 3 and a bit hours flight I think, but it is apparently well worth it, according to my SIL.

Hope everyone is doing ok currently! Nothing particularly exciting happening for me, I'm just bumbling along at present. No major complaints, just slowly increasing in size and weight in the expected areas. LO is regularly kicking and will kick at my fingers if I prod, which is surprisingly fun! (Either that or working is amazingly dull. )

I can happily admit to not being so far ahead with preparations as getting the hospital bag packed, yet. I have put things aside for it though, acquired maternity pads, etc. I've also mostly written my birth plan. So I guess maybe I am kinda being too prepared again after all!

No snow here, just rain. Though they are threatening sleet later in the week... Where did the sunshine go??

DesperateHousewife21 · 30/03/2010 15:35

Its raining really hard here now and the wind has picked up, just in time for me to go to Tesco with freshly washed hair, thanks!

I havent even bought the things for my hospital bag let alone packed it. I dont even have the bag itself!

I will make a list of things for me during labour and after and things for the baby and poss things for DP if he deserves them
I just like making lists!

Getting the cot on Fri from DP's sister, cant wait! Her DS is nearly 12 so its quite old but in v good condition just needs a scrub down. Guess I know what Ill be doing this weekend I can buy a little mobile to go over it too yay!

violetbubbles · 30/03/2010 16:29

Hello everyone
Not posted for a few days but have been logging on every day to see what you're all up to.

Becky and everyone else talking about exploding boobs - mine are OUT OF CONTROL. Before pregnancy I was a 32DD, now I am a 34G!!! I'm convinced I'm carrying 3 babies - 1 in tummy; and 1 in each boob!!! And don't get me started on what's happening to my nipples (and surrounding area) haha!

So, I've been off work for over a week now cos of excruciating tailbone and back pain and as appointment with physio isn't until next Tuesday I had to phone the midwives station this morning to get an emergency appointment. Was quite scary actually...was assigned a day patient bed and given lots of attention. The baby was given a thorough once over, which in hindsight was good...but at the time I couldn't help but panic that they were taking my pain so seriously. Also got checked for UTI and other possible infections. After a couple of consultations, they think my hips are out of alignment and this is causing me the unbearable pain and for my bump to be pointing off to the side! . I've been prescribed Co-codomal and told that I can have stronger painkillers in 24 hours if these ones are no use. Other than that, just to wait it out until my proper physio consult next week. It's such a relief to know that everything is okay in there and that the pains aren't affecting our baby. And the midwives were all lovely, which is a bonus!

Anyway, thought I'd share my story about my pain in case any of you are going through the same and are worried in any way.

I agree with everyone else about the weather - how can it be snowing in Glasgow so close to Easter????

stac14 · 30/03/2010 17:20

becky the code for blooming marvelous is s10apr1 valid till 31st may for 10% on first order

Welcome mwbat hope you've been well

dh try not to worry bout bump size, they all vary hun, don't let others opinion get to you. Your baby is healthy and so are you. Thats lovely bout the cot, you buying a new matress?

spiders lo is doing the same, its very reassuring isnt it? You are so prepared, i still have to gut the cupboards, ds's room etc, not bought birth bag yet or anything. Need to get my finger out lol

Aw violet what a rotten time you have went through, how you feeling now? Glad alls ok with the baby. I know whats this weather like? So fed up with it x

Thanks for the code stac will get that ordered tomorrow How is your DP now?

oh dear violet i have been having some hip pain but sounds like things have been absolutely awful for you- its good to see you have been taken care of though and they have taken it so seriously! Hope the pain killers work well! Yes, i think there could be a baby in each boob!!! oh what a thought lol! I take it your DH is taking responsibility for packing the house for moving etc? You probably won't have been if you've had so much pain but do you know if aquanatal is on on friday? i think i need to get moving again while i have a bit more energy

mmm... just had pasta bolognaise with garlic flat bread, was delicious!

Hope everyone is having a good evening. glasgow girls, lets hope this snow stops soon. Although just watching the news and it looks like stirling and perthshire have been hit hard again, so shouldn't moan too much.

violetbubbles · 30/03/2010 19:01

Thanks for the kind messages ladies - you'll be glad to know that the co-codomal is working a treat!

Becky123 - there's no aquantal this week because it's Good Friday but it's definitely on the following week. I'm thinking of going to the one at Scotstoun tomorrow morning...

I'm currently packing up one box a day in preparation for the big move on the 9th. But really, it's my DH that's doing all of the work. I'm managing the admin of the boxes though - logging what's in them, colour coding them and adding them to a spreadsheet Gives me a chance to be bossy - love it!

Welcome to mwbat - hope your pregnancy has been going well so far

beckyg123 · 30/03/2010 19:11

Thanks violet will try my best for next week then! You sound mega organised about the packing! colour coding- i'm impressed! Are you sure you should be exercising with that pain? Be careful

kkfairybrains · 30/03/2010 19:24

oh violet poor you that sounds really awful.glad the tablets are doing good. well went to my dads last night as was getting my hair done today (gorgeous by the way!) and was to go back home today but the snow is so bad where i live dp really didnt want me driving back so at my mums now! 5 inches of the god damn stuff!
vik tenerife or lanzarote would be lovely in april id say and not too far away either.you can't really go too far wrong with the canary's.
on the subject of boobs and them growing so much well yeah one of mine has gone huge!!!! seriously i know everyone has one bigger than the other but its gone a bit ridiculous! even starting to notice it in tops.and the nipple on that one has got really big and the other one hasn't! dp calls me big tit! lol!

stac14 · 30/03/2010 19:28

becky dp is still feeling grotty but he's determined to go back to work. So hope the snow doesnt get too bad, but as you say its supposed to be getting worse tonight.

violet maybe beckys right bout the exercise for the moment hun. Did they give you any advice? X

OP posts:
DesperateHousewife21 · 30/03/2010 19:56

stac yeah I know everything is fine with LO but Ive become quite bump proud and its a bit disheartening to then be told its small!
Yeah we will be buying a new mattress as a) she doesnt have one and b) you should always buy new ones Ive been told. It'll be nice to have a brand new one anyway as they are made to be more breathable etc now too.

Welcome MWBAT! hope all is well with you

Ive just eaten dinner and I am enormous now I know it'll shrink again by the morning though.

One Born Every Minute tonight woo!

stac14 · 30/03/2010 20:31

dh she was probs just huge when she was preggers. Its amazing that pregnancy is the only time women are happy to get fatter lol. Just asking bout mattress as i hadnt realised how many different types there is out there suppose its the same as everything else x

OP posts:
stac14 · 30/03/2010 20:35

meant to say its the last episode of OBEM tonight, gutted x

OP posts:
DesperateHousewife21 · 30/03/2010 20:52

stac I havent even looked into mattresses yet so no idea what the choices are, will no doubt change my mind 100 times though!
Oh no I love OBEM I really dont want it to end EVER!

kkfairybrains · 30/03/2010 22:02

just watched OBEM and sooo sad its the last one! been really good watching it and there hasn't been any 2 births the same and think that really brought it home to me that no matter what horror stories everyone has, everybody will have their own unique birth experience

Emster30 · 30/03/2010 22:37

kapars sorry only just saw your post. I didn't think they were doing tours of the maternity unit at Whipps Cross at all any more because of the swine flu outbreak, but if you hear differently, let me know!

I had a 22 week midwife appointment - for me it was 16 weeks, 22 weeks and then 28 weeks, and then I think it goes to 4-weekly, then 2-weekly.

I haven't bought anything yet! Can't believe some of you are thinking about packing hospital bags etc! I have been given some bits and bobs, but not sure when to start buying things. Am kind of hoping family will offer to buy some of the bigger things, you never know! My lovely MIL gave me a cheque for £50 the other day and told me to spend it on myself, not on anything for the baby... how nice is that?

Hoping to get in at the docs tomorrow as I have thrush. not nice!

Spirael · 31/03/2010 08:42

Morning all! Hope things are going ok for everyone and that it's not snowing too badly for those caught in the bad weather. We had a thunderstorm and torrential rain last night, which fortunately held off until I'd got back from the supermarket - phewf!

I completed my research into mattresses relatively recently, DesperateHousewife. There seem to be three main sorts:

  • Foam: Cheap and cheerful, can become a bit soft over time but by all accounts perfectly acceptable for the first few years.
  • Sprung: Middle of the range in cost, relatively firm and more likely to keep its shape than foam.
  • Memory Foam: The fancy supportive stuff that shouldn't go too soft but comes with a bigger price-tag.

I went for a sprung mattress in the end, this one in fact. Used the discount from Mumsnet for it too.

I figured mostly that getting the baby used to a sprung mattress from a young age was probably for the best, since it's likely to be what they'll have on their full sized bed as they get older. I also felt it was more supportive for the spine.

The other thing I liked is that the mattress comes with an unzippable side so that if baby throws up and it goes right through the sheets, then it's relatively easy to get the mattress cleaned up as that panel can be removed and shoved into the washing machine.

There are all kinds of fancy layers that can be added to a sprung mattress: air flows, silver fibers, made from bamboo, etc. I mostly figured they were marketing gimics myself, so didn't worry too much.

Might be worth measuring up the cot you're using first though. I was going to use an old family cot, but it was imperial sized and the metric mattresses would have been slightly too big. There are various places that will make a mattress to a specified size, but in the end my in-laws offered to buy a new cot for us so I didn't need to go down that path. (Getting fitted sheets for an odd sized mattress would have been a pain too.)

Hope that helps a little!

Not much to report here still... I don't get my next appointment until the 25 week mark, or the Friday after Easter! That's a 9 week gap from when I last saw my MW. Though I did get my scan at 20 weeks, there wasn't really much opportunity to ask questions or anything. Fortunately all my questions thus far have been answered online.

I think I start seeing my MW every three weeks though from the next appointment, according to my big NHS book, because I'm a first timer. As far as I'm aware, I should be getting my MAT1B form and the documents to claim the Health in Pregnancy grant at the upcoming appointment..? Does that sound about right?

memphis83 · 31/03/2010 09:22

spireal that is right about your maternity grant form i got mine yesterday for people who wont have a 25 week check and need that form or the maternity leave form b4 your nexy xheck you can ask your doctor for them.

my midwife check went fine im 26 weeks on friday! one thing annoyed me though, the ante natel classes for this area are quite a way away and they are only held on a friday morning, they are held in a 'less desirable' area and i feel like they expect men not to have jobs! i used to live about 7 miles the opposite way and those classes are held in an evening so i asked if i go there and they said no!

my friend had her baby the other day, from 1st contaction to birth 4 hours with just gas and air, (its her 1st!) everyone was expecting her not to cope and to go into meltdown (even her) but she did so well! its made me panic as dh works all over uk and i was expecting a really long labour so he wouldnt miss it, i didnt realise my sisters 2 births were 5 and 4 hours!

DesperateHousewife21 · 31/03/2010 09:26

spirael thanks for your extensive research! That was really helpful as I dont have the first clue about mattresses, Ill prob go for the same as you a sprung one.
DP and I have a memory foam mattress which although lovely dont think its quite necessary for a baby unless you have the money then its nice but a sprung one will do the same job and Im sure baby will be just as comfy.

Hopefully the cot I have is a standard size, I will measure it on Friday when its at ours and go from there.
Thanks again for your help!

My next mw appointment is next Wed which will be 25 weeks, I get my HiP grant form too which will be nice. Going to go shopping and buy clothes and essential bits for the baby, exciting!

Ive got to go into town to about 3 different banks today and the weather is AWFUL, its raining and extremely windy.
Also giving in my housing benefit form to my local council so fingers crossed we get enough help to keep on living!

Hope everyone has a good day today.
