Kyuri · 22/03/2010 16:19

Ebb my early scan was at the fertility clinic which had been attending - they like to confirm PG is not ectopic and see a heartbeat before discharging back to GP. I know I was very lucky to have the scan, and am sorry that seeing me and others talk about early scans must be frustrating for you . I guess it's encouraging that you aren't experiencing any symptoms which might make an early scan necessary but I know it's really tough not to worry.

Ebb · 22/03/2010 16:38

Kyuri I'm very happy to hear when people get early scans as I know how reassuring it must be. I just wondered if anyone had got one by going to the Doctors and admitting to being a paranoid neurotic. It would be lovely to see a heartbeat. X

afternoon all

how lovely that some people have seen their babies!

i went to see the gp today, almost 5wks and he has made me an app to book in with the midwife this friday, which is early but as i had PNP with my last baby they want to moniter me carefully, have been fine since last summer tho, but they want to be careful which is ok by me

felt really pukey this morning, not good when i have four kids to get up and out the house so that i can take the elder three to school, luckily dp was around to help this morning, but he is now at work and wont be home till tomorrow evening. he was a star tho and made soup for us to have for dinner tonight, i just have to re heat it and he has also made tomorrow nights dinner so again i just have to stick it in the oven. he gets bizarrely protective and worried about me when i am pregnant, i would have thought it may have worn off by no 5! but apparently not

hope everyone is well xx

4madboys · 22/03/2010 16:58

have just realised you are all putting your ages on the list! lol, well i am 32, but cant get my mouse to let me cut and paste at the mo, its being tempremental.

does anyone else have eczema? i do and it ALWAYS go mad when i get pregnant, no idea why, must be hormones, but for the first three months it drives me mad, is already really itchy and irritable, keep telling myself its a good sign, like the sickness as my hormones are doing what they should be!

Katey1010 and hmmSleep - Thank you! I beleive it is one of the more stressful times in my life! I had the dreaded flu a couple of months back and literally was out of the game for a week. You should have seen the devastation that confronted me on my return!! I did 11 loads of washing in ONE DAY!!

Plus they had decided to pile dishes beside the dishwasher instead of actually filling/refilling it.
Was not a happy bunny.

This house is crazy. FIL has 6 kids and they are all grown up but are in and out of here like yo-yo's. Never get a minute's peace! Hoping to get a new house soon.

Ugh, have felt like rubbish all day. Only started to feel human at 3 o clock. Now they are making some kind of Fray Bentos dinner that smells like nuclear waste. Thank goodness I am vegetarian and can't eat it!Ha!

Gaga82 · 22/03/2010 17:15

4madboys My eczema is also playing up, driving me mad. On the other head, my hair seems to have become some sort of oil slick disaster! So much for 'blooming'...

Has anyone tried ginger cordial/capsuales for MS? Seen on a few websites how ginger can help, but wondered how effective it really is. I'm a teacher, and keep having to vanish into my cupboard, which is not ideal!

umf · 22/03/2010 17:51

Gaga82 Ginger - brilliant! Slice up a bit of the raw root and pour boiling water over it to make tea-like infusion. Last pg it was all I could drink for a couple of weeks.

Katey1010 · 22/03/2010 18:07

My cousin swears by ginger biscuits from Marks and Spencers. Someone else said make frozen lollies from ginger infused in water with sugar and lemon. I know cold anything works when I am sicky!

TLD I hope you get them trained because they should have been sleeping with those 11 loads of laundry! The only way my DH learn not to leave his underwear inside his workout gear when I was doing the laundry was to threaten to wrap said underwear around his pillow. It was mean, but effective.

Gaga82 Can I have some of your greasy hair? Mine is dry and like straw ATM. My skin on the other hand, looks like it did when I was 16 (except now it is wrinkley AND spotty).

addictedtothefirsttrimester · 22/03/2010 18:11

my mw said to eat ginger, but the thought of the taste just makees me more sick and i usually love ginger.

my exzema has also flared up, i think its something to do with hormones but i'm not sure, hopefully it will die down again.

Fenouille · 22/03/2010 18:18

It's lovely to see how you're all getting on!

Well, I had my first Dr's appointment today. I'm being sent for a scan and blood tests as expected. I don't have to go back to her with the results though for another month. I'll probably book in for the scan next week if I can get an appointment as I'm not sure I can wait any longer! We want to tell our parents too and I don't want anyone getting excited on the basis of one home test.

Now, I need some help and advice on some silly little things!

  1. I normally drink loads of tea. I've swapped most of that out for water but it's getting a bit boring. And I miss my tea! What do you all drink? Fruit juices or something? I don't like green tea and never drink fizzy drinks and I just can't think of any thing but tea and water
  1. What's the advice on toxoplasmosis in the UK? Here in France, if you haven't already had it (like me), you're warned off eating any raw veg and fruit. I can't bear the thought of a summer of no salads and have no idea how I'm going to get my daily vitamin dose without the salad bar as the veg are so horribly over-cooked in the works canteen. Is this just total paranoia from the Dr. or are you all getting the same sort of advice?
  1. I've been told to avoid mould. OK, fine, not that I'd be trying to eat mouldy food anyway (apart from Stilton which is obviously off the menu) but the Dr. recommended washing down the fridge with bleach every week. Again, is this just paranoia or am I being unreasonable?

I'm still having trouble getting my head around this being pregnant thing and what with being told, "it's not an illness" on the one hand and, "you need to do all this really special stuff" on the other I don't know whether I'm being reasonable any more or not.

Help me please!

Fenouille · 22/03/2010 18:24

TLD I wouldn't have done their washing for them The situation sounds horrendous - I hope you're being looked after by your other half at least?

CardiCorgi · 22/03/2010 18:31

Katey1010 Me too, I thought my skin was meant to clear up.

Regarding food, well I´m in Germany and my doctor told me that tea and coffee were fine in reasonable amounts. I´ve swapped some of it for fruit teas (don´t really like them that much) but I´m still drinking either two mugs of proper tea, or one tea and one espresso each day. Apart from that I´m drinking loads of water.
The German advice on toxoplasmosis is to eat no raw or rare meat and no unpasteurised cheese. I was so disappointed to find that I don´t have the antibodies. Doctor didn´t say anything about fruit or salad and I´m allowed raw fish and up to two glasses of wine per week.

It´s confusing, isn´t it? Just imagine if we combined German, French and British advice, we wouldn´t be able to eat aything!

Ups DH is treating me like a princess, although I feel nauseous, I´ve not actually had to throw up yet, I felt well enough to ski 24km yesterday.

Downs Nausea, boobs have grown, but one more than the other so now I´m lopsided, still a bit freaked out by the thought that I am pregnant.

addictedtothefirsttrimester · 22/03/2010 18:43

fenouille that sounds like complete paranoia, were told to avoid mouldy cheese's and soft cheeses, nothing about cleaning the fridge with bleach every week. if your a clean person (i'm guessing you are) i really wouldnt worry about this and as for the raw fruit and veg, i was told just to wash before eating...as i do anyway. maybe in france toxi... whatever it is is more common than it is in england??

i should add that i'm saying this as a high risk miscarrage suffer so the advice i've had from doc is often ott!

but mainly all the sane advice i've had from doc and midwife goes along the lines of just be sensible and look after yourself!

PrivetDancer · 22/03/2010 19:23

Wow fen that sound highly paranoid from your doc and quite the opposite of what my French friend tells me - she said they don't even stop eating mouldy cheese over there (she certainly didn't!)
we don't get tested for toxoplasmosis antibodies over here, just told not to pick up cat poo and wash your hands after gardening! I might give bagged salad an extra wash at home, but if I'm out and grab a salad or sandwich I'm not going to be washing that or worrying about it.

One thing I did panic about last time when I read about it is that you should avoid mr whippy style ice cream as that can carry listeria. This also includes mc flurrys etc - basically piped ice cream is a bit dodgy as the machines are probably not cleaned v often. I avoided juice bars for the same reason especially as they just chuck unwashed veg in the machines.
There you go ladies, something else to avoid

redandyellowandpinkandgreen · 22/03/2010 19:35

Kyuri thanks for the link to that blog, I've been slightly obsessively looking for one lately. I found an American one but it was scans and blood tests all the way, rather than the 'go away and get on with it' I feel I've had .

Fen I've just switched to decaff tea but still have maybe 1-2 cups of 'normal' a day if out and about and I can't get decaff.

I know we avoid alcohol but I am still using it a little in cooking, maybe twice a week max and probably half a glass at most. I am right in thinking all the alcohol cooks away doesn't it? I am thinking I am being a bit paranoid but I can just cut it out if it's an issue. I haven't drunk any alcohol at all.

Fenouille · 22/03/2010 19:39

CardiCorgi LOL no we wouldn't, and the French seem to be much more restrictive than everywhere else despite their reputation. There are big signs everywhere warning pregnant women not to drink ANY alcohol. My obviously pregnant friend got refused service in a bar last year when trying to order a beer for her boyfriend Not that I want to drink alcohol particularly, but I find it all very patronising. I guess there would be mutiny over the matjes if all raw fish was off the list in Germany. At least I know I can have some when we're there on our hols in May

Whereabouts are you in Germany? I lived in Hamburg for 5 years and I loved it. My husband is German too and I'd love to move back one day.

attft Toxo does seem to be more common here then the UK but I can't help thinking that if I haven't got it after a decade of living here I'd be very unlucky to get it now.

I'm intrigued by all the different food advice. In France we're "not allowed"

  • Undercooked meat
  • Raw seafood (specifically mentioned oysters: haha, yeah eat them every day, me )
  • Alcohol
  • Raw fruit and reg that I haven't washed, peeled and rewashed myself
  • Lettuce
  • Blue cheese like stilton
  • I'm also not allowed to touch roses in case I get pricked by the thorns (DH commented that it's just as well he never buys me flowers...)

Apart from the normal stuff, I am "allowed" to eat

  • Pasteurised cheese, including soft cheeses like Brie
  • Anything that's been cooked to death
  • Anything that's been frozen at -20°C for a week

YAY...

Fenouille · 22/03/2010 19:51

PD Mr Whippy and juice bars make sense. And please tell me who your French friend's doctor is - I'll be there like a shot! My friend's Obstetrician told her, "If in doubt, be paranoid." That sounds like a really healthy viewpoint!

R&Y&P&G Yes the alcohol will pretty much boil off. I wouldn't worry about it but you could let it bubble a little longer than usual if you're concerned.

Thanks everyone for the decaff tea advice. I think I'll stick with my two normal cups at work and switch at home to decaf. Didn't even know you could get decaf tea! DH is in the UK tomorrow so I'll add them to his shopping list Along with the crumpets and mint imperials

Katey1010 · 22/03/2010 19:58

IMHO contact with bleach fumes once a week with your head in your fridge is probably worse than anything in there!!! You could always tell the doctor to come round and do it. I think that would be the only way the fridge would get bleached once a week in our house.

I drink some normal tea, some decaf tea, fruit teas and fizzy water mixed with fruit juice. I had to refuse red wine, white wine and chocolate port yesterday. Pretty convinced it was a preg test by the friends who don't know. I blamed it on a cold and cold meds. Thanks for the suggestion MN friends!!!

Fenouille · 22/03/2010 20:09

I think I'll be blaming any non-alcohol drinking moments on unspecified antibiotics. I don't have any sniffles to blame it on!

Katey1010 I thought I might see if I could talk DH into doing it

Fenouille I´m in Munich and I like it here. There are always a few niggles as an expat, but the ski-ing more than makes up for them.

funbun · 22/03/2010 20:39

Feeling a lot more relaxed this time about what to eat/drink etc. I'm sure a couple of milky coffee's in the morning aren't doing me any harm.

Off alcohol, at the mo', so thats good. Might just drink the good stuff like champagne on the odd occasion.

Am avoiding cheese with rind and uncooked meat and only one tuna baguette a week. Otherwise its all good.

LadyBee · 22/03/2010 20:44

loopymumsy - I love hearing people's nonplussed reactions, they just make me giggle. Better luck with your parents .

I just wrote a good long post and then lost it, and just can't bring myself to go through it again.
