Pample hold off of some of the more expensive stuff - if you're lucky, family might offer to buy some stuff for you, or at least contribute towards cost.

Also, I was desperate for a lovely oi oi changing bag with bright tulips but couldn't justify the £60. So when work asked me what I wanted as a maternity leave pressie I asked for that

Have my eye on one of those leather ones this time...

isheisnthe · 26/02/2010 11:40

He is 6 next month ducky - and he can be very cute - but he can also be a total terror!

I can not decide whether to find out or not - there was no choice with DS1 & 2 - they wouldnt tell you - but they do now. And I just knew they were boys, got no clue this time though...

pamplem0usse · 26/02/2010 11:41

Blueberries we're lucky enough to have had offers from the (Grand)parentals for that will cover the cot/ car seat and buggy/pram... yay!
Apart from that I think we're just going to have to try and pick up bits and pieces every month.... husband and I are both PhD 'students' - which means we each get a stipend but it's not huge!

Alicetheinvisible · 26/02/2010 11:42

cherry i love this site but may only do pockets in nice fabric, the rest in somrthing plainer and cheaper

CherryPie3 · 26/02/2010 11:46

YummyMummy I think the idea of cot/junior beds is a super idea. Cost effective and practical.

Pample I had a nosey at the 'Orchard' cotbed, it's lovely!! Good choice - although agree a bit pricey.

Blueberries at thepuddle a baby sick!! I would have done the same, I was so zombie-fied in the first few weeks I barely got dressed!!

Alice - That website is fabulous!!! I love all the fabrics and can see all of them as changing bags (iykwim) - well, maybe not the fish one But definitely all the rest!

OP posts:
CherryPie3 · 26/02/2010 11:49

Alice You should have your own shop on eBay or something if you can make changing bags. You'll have to show us all a picture of your finished bag for us all to see

Think you're right about the pattern subtlety - think just pockets would be a good contrast

Alicetheinvisible · 26/02/2010 11:50

I really love the zoo and spaceship ones.

Cherry wait til you see the finished article before you say something like that

CherryPie3 · 26/02/2010 11:55

Alice I'm sure it will be lovely and you'll make us all .
I really like the zoo one as well, love the 'frippery birds' one - but very girly!!

Chulita · 26/02/2010 11:55

ishe, your DS sounds like a sweetie
Can you all stop chattering a bit so I can catch up? I only went for a short walk and I'm waaaaay behind.
Got brownies in the oven again, they smell soooo good
alice I'd like to make myself a bag but I've only sewed things like aprons and taggie blankets so I'm not sure I'll manage one...we'll have to see.
DD's still using her hooded towels, maybe they're just bigger ones.
I need a list I think, just not thinking about it til after the 20 week scan, I'm sure they are things I don't have anymore.

Chulita · 26/02/2010 11:58

Ooh! Just googled sheepskins and found this, so cute!
And I definitely have pram envy

Call me mad...but its my first bambino!:P

Chulita · 26/02/2010 12:07

Oh my goodness!

One thing I'd add for the hospital is something to labour/birth in. I had an old kickboxing t-shirt and a black bra (didn't think the bottoms mattered cos they come off anyway) but a night-shirt would have been too long and it's gets pretty mucky anyway.

CherryPie3 · 26/02/2010 12:21

You know the cowboy one? I saw it used on tv once - it was on a programme called baby's room, and the deisigner used it to add onto the bottom of some plain curtains - they looked fab!!!!!

OP posts:
cakeywakey · 26/02/2010 12:22

I'd forgotten how much there is to think about. I can forsee some serious sessions in the loft doing a stocktake so that I can have a 'must-haves' list to go shopping/scrounging off family . There have been a few babies around in the last few years and I'll probably try to borrow some stuff - we borrowed a moses basket last time which was a Godsend.

I second Chulita about something to labour in. I wore an H&M maternity vest so that I was partly covered but able to whip a boob out once DD was born. I had a pair of slippers as well to walk around in that ended up covered in all sorts and were chucked. I suggest making it a birthting partner job to make sure that nothing is left near the 'business end' of the bed in the delivery room if that's how you give birth

CherryPie3 · 26/02/2010 13:14

Oh my, YummyMummy That is quite a list!!
Don't think you'll need safety gate/cupboard locks etc until baby is crawling. They really don't move much in the first months

I also laboured/delivered in a vest as it was sooooo hot! (ds born in july 2006 heatwave!)
Gave slippers up as a bad job and wore cheap socks that I could throw away afterwards.

pamplem0usse · 26/02/2010 13:32

YummyMummy you're brave, I'm not even thinking of stuff I'll need later in baby's life yet, i.e. solid feeding stuff and cupboard locks. My hubby is still trying to get over the fact that our beautiful glass coffee table - bought just before we found out I was pregnant - is going to have to go as a safety hazard!!!

CherryPie3 · 26/02/2010 13:42

Pample We have a glass tv stand, but we're not getting rid of it. Dd and Ds cope quite well with it and it's not broken yet

OP posts:
starshaker · 26/02/2010 13:47

Well i did my list of big essentials today and its gonna come to £1699.53. That is for

1 cot (hoping i can get away with 1)
Phil and teds classic twin
2 p&t cacoons
2 car seats
2 bases
Blankets and sheets
bath dresser
steriliser
mattress
1 gracco sweetpeace swing

Have still to get
clothes for babies
towels
breast pump
bottles
and hundreds of other things i will get as i go lol

Think i might stand with a collection tin and set up a twin charity lol. Do you think i can send dd up chimneys or is that frowned upon lol

ElusiveMoose · 26/02/2010 13:48

I've got a glass coffee table, Pample, and it's happily survived a toddler (and more to the point, the toddler has survived it).

Alicetheinvisible · 26/02/2010 13:49

YummyMummy they will put a hat on baby straight away reguardless of temp as baby will feel the chill after being in the womb, so depending how long you are in for, might go home in it. Pack hat, cardi, blanet anyway.

CherryPie3 · 26/02/2010 13:53

They never put a hat on dd or ds?

Just placed them straight on my chest/tummy.

Have I missed something?

OP posts:
Aussieng · 26/02/2010 13:58

Oh these lists are fab - although I'm a bit intimidated by YummyMummy's . My dad and the IL's are purchasing pushchair and cot respectively but my mum is doing us a "bottom drawer" where she is going to just buy something every week for £5-£10 so these lists are so useful (and so is her bottom drawer idea). We've got a few NCT sales around here from the end of March onwards so I'm going to go to those and then there is the Baby Show at the NEC in May which DH and I are going to just for a day out and a nosy as much as anything.

Was watching "Bringing Baby Home" this morning and wincing at the early bf attempts.

Just went out for pizza for lunch and there was a lady in the bf in the restaurant. She was very discrete - was sat at a wall table with her back to the room and absolutely no-one batted an eye including the waiting staff when they went to serve/clear etc. Made me feel much better as I've been worrying a bit about that.

Alicetheinvisible · 26/02/2010 14:11

Maybe it is just in our hospital then? Every book i read mentioned it, then after i had DD (emcs) they wrapped her up and put a hat on her. Was allowed it off later on (can't remember how long though)

ElusiveMoose · 26/02/2010 14:16

Nope, never had a hat put on DS either.

Re bfing in public, I never found any problem with that (in the brief 6 weeks or so that I managed to bf!). Don't want to dismiss bad experiences, because I know some people encounter very rude members of the public, but none of my friends found this a problem. TBH, I think you leave your dignity at the door when you have a baby and don't get it back for at least a couple of months. I still cringe now when I think back to a visit to bf-ing clinic (at which a couple of dads were present), when I whipped my boobs out to show the NCT counsellor just what a bad state they were in, and the lady had to gently remind me to put them away again a couple of minutes later because I kind of forgot...
