BLOODY HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

any one there???

My sister who is 34 weeks pg just rang. she has had baby today at 34 WEEKS!!!!! oh my god. she was upset and cant see him as she had to have EMCS and just waiting to hold her baby. he is 4 lb something I dont know exact as I am in shock and it didn't go in.

CRIKEY!

He is in HDU (high dependency unit??) and breathing fine but not feeding yet. they are waiting for him to feed...

OMFG I am in serious shock!

GruffaloSoldier · 26/03/2010 20:06

PS. Diege - grin] at November!!

essenceofSES · 26/03/2010 20:34

Aunty Gruff - WOW!!!!! Not suprised you are in shock! Must be v hard for her waiting to hold him but hope she gets to have that first cuddle v v soon
Does she live near you?

Diege - hope J is doing better now and you are finally bug free v soon. Hope DD3 enjoys her trip tomorrow!

Nat - Bit of a rollercoaster for you at the moment! All v exciting though

tink - great shopping again !

Sorry not to do a better namecheck. Am feeling a bit sorry for myself as my cold is still hanging around and the most disgusting snot has been coming from my nose the last 3 days (sorry!) Am now just exhausted and don't want to do anything other than go to bed. DH (bless him!) though has cooked some chicken legs for tea so I'll stay up and try and have something to eat before hitting the sack.

One bit of excitement here today is that O got his end of month 1 report from nursery! I wish I could type it all out for you to read as it's v cute but it's 2 pages long and you'd be a bit bored as he's not your PFB! A few highlights for you though:
"O has settled v well into his nursery routine and happily plays with the other children and staff"
"O seems happy to join in with activities, always crawling over to see what is happening. He really enjoyed playing with brushes and feeling the texture so we will introduce him to more textures such as sand, shaving foam, etc."
"If he is asked to stop or give something back, he will do so with little encouragement"
"He has a v cheeky nature, always smiling and chatting to his carers and other children"

(Thank you for indulging me in my little proud mummy moment!)

Finally....

GruffaloSoldier · 26/03/2010 20:43

Thanks SES. we have just heard that she will see him at 10.30am tomorrow

That report sounds delightful! I don't blame you for being proud - bless him!!!

Diege · 26/03/2010 20:46

OMG GRUFF Many congratulations but also you must be feeling shell-shocked (as must your sister).Had she been being monitored etc, or was it totally unexpected? I'm sure all will be well - pretty much everything is developed by 34 wks - but as you say, what a bombshell!
Off to bed now, but let us know how things progress, and in the meantime pour yourself a large glass of wine!

Diege · 26/03/2010 20:51

x-posts SES! Your nursery report made me smile - O does sound like he's really settled in well; you must be very proud and relieved too that he's doing so marvellously .
Right, really is bedtime now. Have been furiously checking dd3, and so far so good, no sick-drenched sheets...

GruffaloSoldier · 26/03/2010 20:53

oh and hooray for May Hope AF shows up soon!!

GruffaloSoldier · 26/03/2010 20:54

Thanks Diege - and thanks for wine idea, that might be just what I need! Just a little tipple of course!

Night Diege

Starshinetiger · 26/03/2010 21:52

Ooooh Gruff - congrats on becoming an Auntie - very exciting, but also very nerve-wracking given the circumstances. Hope this comes out the right way - your sister should be able to see her baby whenever she wants (someone available to wheel her to the HDU permitting of course). Having been in that situation myself (well slightly different - DD was full-term, but whisked straight to SCBU) - they said I could go up and see her whenever I wanted and when she was in GOSH was the same). Is very important for your Sis to rest after EMCS, but I know I only managed 1-2 hours sleep after DD was born, mainly due to the shock and I spent a lot of the night reading the baby name book! Even though they said I could go up whenever, I did have to ring up to ask if I could go up, but your sis should not be afraid to ask - he is her son! Right, off my soapbox now!

Hope you're enjoying a glass of wine.

GruffaloSoldier · 26/03/2010 22:18

Thanks Star. I don't know the details, but he is not in SCBU, but HDU - don't know if thats why. But they have to wait til my sis is able to get in the wheelchair. Her DH has been with the baby quite a bit which is good.

I have been all night! Havent done anything useful! I havent had wine either as there is only a "special" bottle left that we are saving for something, which I have no idea what that was. oh well. I should probably steer clear anyway, just in case!

Have got so much work to do with impending deadline on Monday but I just cannot concentrate tonight!!

NatalieJane · 27/03/2010 06:30

Morning

Huge congratulations Gruff, and to your family. Hope he is doing OK and they are just edging on the side of caution. Diege is right of course, at 34 weeks pretty much everything is formed, and if they managed to get any steroids into your sister that would have really helped his lungs, I threatened early labour with DS2 from 34 weeks (in fact every day from 33+6 right up till 41 weeks - little bugger!) so I did a lot of research into babies born at 34 weeks, most babies were fine and even ready to go straight home, especially if they had chance for the steroids, others had a short stay in HDU/SCBU but most are home within a week. And 4lbs+ is a good weight for 34 weeks, obviously the bigger they are the hardier they are. I am sure he will be fine, must be horrible for your sister not to be able to even see him though Will you be able to visit her today? (Think I remember you saying she lived quite far away?)

Diege, it's a pain in the arse isn't it? (with the card thing I mean!) I've had it before, but it's been blocked and stayed blocked, which is why I was so cross yesterday, why stop some and not others, it took me ages to work out what had gone through and what hadn't, the bank told me that one had gone through that hadn't so I had to check all of it. Obviously, it's going to make a difference on delivery times as well, and I am already cutting it close for the 2th April. And of course am cross that it had to be the NDA one, it's just so embarressing to have your card declined! I don't see why, if they suspicions, why don't they ring you? And I'd also understand if I'd have had just the last couple of purchases blocked, but why block the first one? I think they just have to do x number of spot checks a day, and yesterday, just because it really mattered, it had to be me! Anyway, hope you are all feeling well today and that you all have a lovely day, looks like the weather is going to be fine as well

Ses, those report snippets are so cute! You must be really pleased that he has settled so well - well done O!

Right one crying baby to sort... see you all later - congrats again Gruff

NatalieJane · 27/03/2010 06:49

*20th, not 2th!

NatalieJane · 27/03/2010 07:19

I have just uploaded a floorplan of the house to my FB (I think!) it isn't to scale at all, but all the rooms are in the right layout! How sad am I to have gone to the trouble of actually making the floorplan myself, just because the letting agent's haven't put one on the net?!

cantmummyhaveabreak · 27/03/2010 08:34

Gruff- wasn't going to post as off to get DC's ready and have a trip into town...

DD2 was born at 32 wks, she didn't need any air or anything. Will your sis be feeding him herself? if so she can start expressing a little to be tube fed to him until she's well enough to get to see him. Our HDU was in SCBU, it's quite normal for a premmy to be sent there for the first 24-48hrs while they check they have no infections etc. DD2 spent her first 2 days in HDU because of the AB's she was on while they waited for results as to wether she had an infection or not.

What brought the labour on? and/or meant she had to have EMCS?

DD fed for herself the first time at 32+3, then she got stronger by the day. I had to wait till i could get into a wheelchair, which meant the first time i saw her properly (after the 10mins i got after coming round from CS- which i dont remember) she was about a day and a half old. It was very tough, and still is now, so i know exactly what your sister is going through.

Does she have pictures of him? If so that may help... thought i was a little confused as i didn't actually 'know' that she was my baby... it was just a picture of a baby.

Anyway- i wish your sister, and your family all the strength and love in the world, it may be a couple of stressful weeks, but it'll be worth it when he's home.

Diege · 27/03/2010 09:02

Morning! Off to Liverpool in about 30 mins - thankfully everyone still well, though tried ds a bit soon with milky porridge this morning! Seems to be ok on bits of bland solids, so have left 'instructions' with dh and fingers crossed he'll remain puke-free till we get back..
GRUFF, I'm sure your sister will feel more reassured today when she sees ds - does he have a name yet? Congrats again to you and the whole family .
NAT, I think we are guilty of applying logic and commonsense to banks...as you say I'm sure it's just random checks...in fact my bank once told me (after similar that happended to you) that in future of I was planning any more 'sprees', then to let them know in advance , like they were my parents or something...bet they don't do it to Simon Cowell . Although they did do to my (ex) best friend (proper footballer's wife) which was quite satusfying at the time .
Right, better sort out the chaos!

Hi All,

Not had a chance to catch up on everything.

Wanted to say congratulations to Gruff on becoming an Auntie. Your sis will be in a bit of shock but be wheeled over there as soon as her catherter (sp?) is out and I have no doubt LO will be fine after a bit of TLC.

E was full term but ended up in the NICU due to low blood sugar and poor temperature control. We did not expect it, he was full term and was given to us after my emcs and it wasn't until 8 hrs after he was born and he started to shake that they realised he was ill and took him away! I am still angry about it, I was induced because he wasn't growing properly and no one checked his blood sugar after he was born! When I noticed something was wrong and called the MW it was night time and I was all alone and had to deal with E being taken away all on my own, was very hard.

E spent 50 hrs in the HDU before being transfer to SCBU. First 36 hrs in HDU he was in an incubator and we couldn't hold him as he was very poorly but then he was moved to an open cot where he stayed for another 24 hrs until they were happy he could maintain his temp and he could go more than hourly between tube feeds. He was then transfered to SCBU next door for another 4 days and then we had to "room in" with him for a day before he was then allowed home.

The main reason he was in HDU was simply he needed more care than SCBU could provide. Tiny premmies in incubators that are stable can be in SCBU and poorly full termers in open cots can be in a HDU. Its not an indication of how sick you are, more how much care you need. The HDU have 1 nurse to each baby (or to 2 babies), whilst the SCBU has 1 nurse to 4 babies. So intially E needed constant monitoring and feeding so had to be in HDU but when he needed slightly less care he was transfered.

E was exclusively fed on EBM as soon as they introduced it (first day or so he was on soley glucose). Intially he was tube fed the EBM but by day 5/6 we were able to start trying to BF. It meant expressing every 3 hours day and night which was damn hard work but meant I never had a supply issue. Luckily I knew I had to express to get my supply in so asked about it, I don't think they would have set me up with the equipment so quickly if I hadn't have asked. I used the machine on the ward when I was there and the one in the NICU when I was visiting E. When I was discharged from hospital but E was still in NICU I borrowed one from the NICU free of charge which I had to hand back when he left.

Wanted to say more but E has just woekn up and is crying so sorry for ignoring everyone else!!

Oh..

Gruff - hope you have more news of your new nephew today! Hope after the initial shock your sis BIL and nephew are all settling in well to it.

Would just echo what Playing and Cant have said - DD was able to latch on when born and was allowed to suckle twice the next day before she went Nil By Mouth, but apart from that, I expressed solely for the first 11 days and am still bfing DD now, so it is possible if that what's your sister wants. Hope you are close enough geographically that you will get to visit soon.

Diege - enjoy the show with DD2. Hope you have a great day.

We've been to softplay with both DC this morning and DD fell asleep on way home - she's still asleep now (transferred to cot) 1hr 40 mins later and DH has taken DS to shops to get a few bits, so for (ooh, give it 5 mins before DD wakes up), I get peace and quiet - bliss!!

GruffaloSoldier · 27/03/2010 14:54
