...now the "Crazy Baby Ladies"!

Had the idea to start this thread because, after getting my BFP on Monday, it suddenly dawned on me that I was going to lose contact with a lot of lovely people. I feel sad every time anyone leaves (though obviously happy for you that you've got your BFP) and thought this might be a nice idea, so that we can continue to keep in touch. After all, we've been through a lot together, haven't we?!

Also, I felt a bit out of my depth on the other threads, where it seemed like most of the members had already had children. There didn't seem to be a "first-timers" thread on here. (Unless I missed it!)

So here goes!

pixie what a total bitch your boss is. I mean, who asks things like that??

Does she have some kind of disorder that makes her totally unable to understand how to behave in normal society?

Surely the ONE AND ONLY reaction when someone tells you they are pregnant is "That's wonderful news, congratulations! How are you feeling? Would you like a nice cup of tea?"

Anything else is just weird.

Mind you, DH's parents asked if it was planned and I heard him kind of stutteringly say, in a Hugh Grant fashion "erm, well, eh, yes, well, yes, well, we weren't preventing, and just, erm, you know, hoping"

I mean, how do you answer that to your mum?

"Yes, mother, we have been shagging with intention for the last 8 months" or "no, we were just really careless and I knocked her up".

No answer can be good.

She means well though so I don't mind.

pepperonipizza · 29/01/2010 06:15

Agree - what a cow of a boss Pixie!!! I actually find that 'was it planned' question very rude all on it's own!! Does anyone else? My DP thinks it's an okay thing to ask!

Whiteroses, glad you're back. Kicks didn't start any earlier than 18 weeks for me, but I do have an anterior placenta. All the books say 16 week onwards. It's a fab feeling!

Defo agree with Spirael on the morning sickness. Keep eating every hour, even when you don't feel like it. I drank tons of chocolate milk, before bed and in the morning. Seemed to stop me actually throwing up (though still felt nauseous all the time!).

Hope you ladies are all well and ready for the weekend to start. 24 weeks tomorrow - not too long until I'm in the 3rd trimester. My god!!

Ozziegirly · 29/01/2010 06:18

I find the "is it planned" question v odd, but no one has said it yet apart from MIL.

We've been married over 5 years so it's sort of taken as a given I think.

I need to think of some witty comebacks in case I am asked though.....

WhiteRoses · 29/01/2010 08:46

Well it seems we now have another two graduates! Addie got her BFP yesterday, and Worrisome got hers this morning. So congratulations to them both! I won't put redo the list yet though, cause they both said their lines were very faint and I don't know if they want to test again. (Mind you, I say a line's a line! ) Anyway - eight BFPs this month! What a great way to start the new year!

As for me - I'm still sick. A fifth colleague has called in sick to work today, vomiting. I really think I do have a bug, as, when I was queasy earlier in the week, eating helped. Eating makes this worse now. And it's quite a coincidence, everyone vomiting at the same time... What worries me is that I've eaten NOTHING since Wednesday lunchtime, and have had very few fluids, too. That can't be good for the pregnancy... Luckily, I already had a doctor's appointment for this afternoon, so I'll see what he has to say... I can't think what else to do... I tried dry toast, ginger biscuits, a mint imperial, a glass of milk, some lemonade... All straight back up. (TMI, sorry!) Just hate the thought of all that's developing right now, and I'm completely depriving my baby of nutrition...

November - I'm seeing the midwife next Wednesday too.

Ozzie - lol at your MIL's question! Bet she just didn't think! I wish I was witty enough to think of a good comeback, just like that... But I'm not, so you'll have to leave it with me!

Peperoni - just tried chocolate milk... Tasted nice but we'll see how long it stays down for... Here's hoping!

Yeh, I think "is it planned?" is a bit rude. I/we've told my parents and sister - they just congratulated us. My manager said "congratulations" and then asked were DH and I happy. I thought that was tactful enough. And the doctor asked was that a good thing or a bad thing. Which, again, I guess is fair enough, considering the fact that he must see a lot of people who think it's a bad thing.

"I won't put redo the list yet though" - duh!

I won't redo the list yet/I won't put them on the Graduates list yet...

Also missed a "p" out of "Pepperoni"... Can you tell I didn't sleep well last night?!

(And that's the chocolate milk back up again now. )

Your boss sounds like she has foot in mouth disease, Pixie. I really hope she was just shocked into saying mindless things rather than seriously meaning them. My boss was great when I told him... He said congratulations and that he was thrilled for me. He then went on about how if I needed time off that was fine, and how I could take a laptop and work from home if necessary. Guess I got lucky!

I had a private scan at 9 weeks where everything looked good, so I told close friends and family after that point. Mostly because it was Christmas and it seemed like a good time to do it. I made the pregnancy public knowledge after my NHS scan at 13 weeks. However I'm still in that 'fat or pregnant?' stage, so I don't think random strangers have realised yet.

My next NHS scan (20 weeks) is on the 4th March, WhiteRoses. Another 5 weeks away yet! Seems such a long time. Seeing the MW a week today though and going to beg ask nicely to hear the heartbeat, which'll put me at ease a bit. I have a suspicion though that after the MW appointment next week I'll have nothing until the scan!

It seems a pretty unusual preferance, but I'm actually vaguely crossing my fingers for a boy to start with. Several reasons... Firstly because I can then fob off all the coming of age chats to DH to do. Secondly because for both DH and I our families consist of girl then boy for children and I want to break the trend! Lastly, because I'm a Scout leader so have had more experience dealing with young boys than girls.

However, DH would like a daughter first. I think partially because he thinks he can then fob the coming of age chats off to me! I think he also loves the idea of being adored by a little girl, because little girls generally love their daddies. My DH is quite effeminite, loves baking and such, so I think he'd feel more confident with a girl.

It's quite convenient in a way that we each have a preference opposite to one another. I feel happy when my DH is happy, even if it goes against what I was originally wanting. So if I have a girl that's fine by me, I'll be just as thrilled as having a boy! Maybe that seems kind of weird... But it works for us.

Some flippant witty responses might include "Were you?" or "I don't remember...", Ozzie.

The regular question I get asked is "But I thought you were moving to Canada!".

Um... I still am. They do let babies in to Canada, you know.

Anyway... I'll stop now. Another long one! Here's more cookies, lovingly handmade by my DH.

Spirael · 29/01/2010 09:03

Don't panic about the baby not getting what it needs, WhiteRoses. Baby will get priority in your body and nick all the nice nutrients and stuff you've been saving up for a rainy day.

Unfortunately... That'll leave you with very little, so you might feel worse than normal after throwing up.

Take it easy, lots of rest and fluids! Keep a bucket nearby and bed down on the sofa with a blanket for some cozy snooze time in front of the TV.

If you get muscle aches, I believe a heat pad/hot water bottle is ok to use as long as it's not on your stomach/abdomen. I used one against the small of my back which helped, as did getting DH to give me a nice massage!

DesperateHousewife21 · 29/01/2010 09:41

spireal my 20 week scan isnt til 2nd March so I know how your feeling I really want to see LO again! Hearing the heartbeat on Wed was lovely though.

whiteroses I went on that link you posted and had a look at what my baby is doing this week (15) Apparently its the size of a kit kat finger lol.

Im really hoping to start feeling the baby move in a week or so, its my first and I also have an anterior placenta so it may take a little longer for me but its going to be such a great feeling when I do first feel it.

Congrats to addie and worrisome on their BFP's!

pixiestix · 29/01/2010 15:39

Thanks guys - I am feeling a little better today, both mentally and physically! The pain has lessened and there is no bleeding so am very happy about that. My boss is just a cow - she wasnt picking on me in particular, she is like that with everyone. We have a guy in our office who has four children with four different women - she told him he "should be on Jeremy Kyle" the other day and he was so upset he wanted to smack her! She is just one of those people who say the first (mean) thing that comes into their heads. Horrible. Well only seven more months of her and I will be on maternity leave!!

WhiteRoses - sorry you are so ill It sounds awful. Im sure the baby is fine though - as Spirael says, it is taking everything it needs which makes you feel ever shitter. (I don't really want to feel like that, you know, I just want a cast iron guarantee that the pregnancy is going well! )
That picture you linked to was cool. I was envisaging the baby as a shrimp, but it actually looks more like a NikNak crisp!!!!!

Pepperoni - thanks, I really wasn't expecting to get so upset by the "Was it planned" question. I guess I just thought as I am a happily married grown up that it was obvious!

Ozzie - at your in-laws! Your poor husband!

Spirael - your boss sounds lovely, you definitely lucked out there! I know what you mean about the sex of the baby - I think that DH wants a girl as he has two sons already, and I would be really happy with that to make him so happy. But then I feel really protective in case we have a little boy, and I would be really happy with that as well. So totally chuffed either way really!!

Congratulations to Worrisome and Addie on your BFPs!!! And its really selfish, but I love moving up the list, and getting those few extra days under my (expanding) belt!! Not the graduate new girl anymore!

NovemberAli · 29/01/2010 19:16

I love it..NikNak crisp, that has made my day, still chuckling now......

addie81 · 29/01/2010 21:00

Yay! I am here!!
I can't believe it - thought I was going to be TTC forever!! Got a BFP the same week we started private fertility investigations! Lovely to hear that you are all doing well. Just spent a while reading all the posts so I feel like I have caught up with everything now.

Delighted to be pregnant and hoping that the little pip stays put. My major worry (after MC, obviously) is morning sickness, and in particular throwing up in court!!! It would not be very professional to have to run out and throw up at a crucial moment.

I have already bought sea-bands, ginger capsules, vitamin B6, the "morningwell" cd, and lots of peppermints. I am hoping that my using all of those and eating little and often I will manage to avoid actually puking if the dreaded MS strikes. My mum had it really badly with all three of us so I am not holding out much hope of avoiding it, but at the moment I have 1.5 hours of travelling at either end of a full day in court every day, so the thought of trying to do that whilst throwing up is not great, particularly since I never throw up and I am pretty phobic about it.

Anyway, I am only 4 weeks today, so hopefully I have another couple of weeks before I have to start worrying about it.

Its great to hear how well you guys are doing, and that you are all progressing so well with your pregnancies. Makes me feel much more optimistic.

A xx

WorrisomeHeart · 30/01/2010 09:03

Hi all

Fantastic to be here too! I took a CB digi this morning - so fab to see it in writing!! Am feeling really excited at the moment and just blissed out - I really thought we'd never get to this stage. Am going to call the GP's on Monday to see about getting on the midwives roster. For those of you further down the line, does your DH come to the booking in appt and is that done at the same time as your first scan?? I wasn't sure if it was the same appt.. so much to learn about!

have a fab day everyone!

DesperateHousewife21 · 30/01/2010 13:44

hi worrisome congrats on your BFP you must be so pleased
My DP didnt come to the booking in app he only came to the 12 week scan, my booking in app was done first, then my mw sent off my notes to the hosp who then contacted me about when my scan would be.
Generally at your booking in app your mw will ask you about any allergies and family medical history and maybe take your blood pressure and weight, its just filling out alot of forms really.

addie81 · 30/01/2010 13:46

Hi All,
Some reassurance needed - have been having niggling period type cramps on and off for the past couple of days. Varying from hardly noticeable to really quite sore. No bleeding at all though. Did any of you get this in your first couple of weeks? Pixie has kindly posted on the ttc thread that she has had sometime like this with no bleeding or other problems. Did anyone else have this? Am terrified AF will arrive at any second and it will all be over before it has really begun!

DesperateHousewife21 · 30/01/2010 13:50

Hi addie yeah I had these in the early weeks, its your uterus lining stretching, mine did this on and off til about week 11/12 and still occasionally does it now. If there is no blood there is nothing to worry about

NovemberAli · 30/01/2010 15:01

I had these too Addie, really worried me to start with and then I had a quick check on MN and it seems like its quite common. Like Desp and Pixie said it's your uterus stretching and the bean properly settling in I still get them occasionally now (9+2)

addie81 · 30/01/2010 15:27

Thanks so much for the quick responses! I feel much less worried now. xx

Spirael · 30/01/2010 16:15

Yep, I can also agree that period-like pains seem to be nothing to worry about addie. I've had them a few times - mostly during the earlier stages. As long as there's no bright red blood, then there's no reason to panic.

I went alone to my booking in appointment at around 6 weeks, WorrisomeHeart. That was with the midwife at my local doctors surgery. It mostly consisted of filling in forms about my medical history and the medical history of my immediate family. She weighed me, calculated my BMI and took my blood pressure too.

I was advised to take folic acid and not to eat things not recommended for during pregnancy, or take medicines other than paracetamol without checking. She asked me which hospital I preferred of the two nearby and also made a note of my preferance for a homebirth. I was then booked in for another appointment a couple of weeks later where they'd take blood and I was given a pot to bring along a FMU sample.

They want a FMU sample and take your blood pressure at every appointment, it seems. And you get one pot for FMU, that you have to empty and clean yourself... Bleh! Not to mention it's the smallest thing ever to aim for... What happens when you can't even see it??

Anyway, second appointment at 8 weeks, she tried to take blood for all the various tests they do (STDs, HIV, etc) but failed to get any blood out of me. So I got booked in for an extra appointment two weeks later so she could try again.

Third appointment at 10 weeks, I actually dragged DH along to meet the MW since he happened to be off work. (It was between Christmas and New Year.) MW finally got blood from my arm, did the usual FMU and blood pressure, and then because I asked her nicely she got the doppler out. She managed to find the baby's heartbeat, which was great. And because DH was there, he got to hear it too!

I had my scan a few weeks after that at 13 weeks, which was at the hospital so my usual MW wasn't there. My next MW appointment is Friday, when I'll be 16 weeks. Not sure what'll happen there... Probably just FMU, Blood Pressure and Doppler, followed by question time. I'll let you know next weekend.

Hope that helps!

WorrisomeHeart · 30/01/2010 17:30

Thanks so much Spireal that is such a help!! Even though I thought I was pretty well read on the whole preggo/baby subject it's a whole different story when you go through it!!

And great to hear that others have had crampng with no issues - mine is tending to come and go atm.

addie81 · 30/01/2010 18:05

thanks spireal. very reassuring.

ceebs05 · 31/01/2010 15:35

Congrats Worriesome and addie on your BFPs!

addie - I have also had a fair bit of cramping. Today at lunch it was really sore and I started to panic a bit but it passed and no bleeding so I guess it's normal

My major concern at the moment is getting some peace and quiet - the in laws have been here just about all weekend. And we haven't even told them yet. I wonder if they will ever leave once they know and worse, when the baby eventually comes!!! I know I will probably want their help and I am grateful that they will take an interest but I am someone who needs my own space, particularly when feeling stressed, tired etc. Sorry bout the rant!
