horse riding and pregnancy article

Esp. bit about early preg...

my book says avoid riding in the third trimester (remember that bit from last night also ski-ing etc because of imbalance) - but think I best let the horsey mums answer you properly as I know very little I'm afraid. sorry

My fwend rode her Danish warmblood till she was about 8 months. That was, showjumping, galloping etc. And falling off (at a gallop).

Of course there's a risk and HR is always high risk. My concern was that she had a terrifically difficult labour and a lot of damage which can be associated with lots of tight muscles down below through HR. Or it could be coz she was 36 and her first baby. Or it could have been bad labour management, or just bad luck.

I rode till I was 3 months or so with littlecarrot but gave up as my ex-race TB was too skitty for me to feel safe. It wasn't that I was afraid of falling off per se, but I lost the instinct to go with her and be a second ahead of her as my first thought was the baby, and that just got dangerous. A less mad horse would have been ok.

The question I would ask is, are you likely to fall? You know your horse and your riding best.

Oh someone mentioned labour. I can help with that being (AFAIK) currently the only one here with form.??

Ask away - entirely honest answers promised.

Not likely to fall - but i don't think that is the risk with the first 3 months - it is the sentence here that worries me:

There is also an increase risk of miscarriage if such activities are undertaken early in pregnancy.

Report
iggypiggy · 16/11/2009 16:37

Should clarify - that study links strenuous exercise to miscarriage - not trauma from falling off.

I need a stiff drink - gin please

Oh poo. A regular hoserider is naturally fit and it's hardly like you're running a marathon. Mary King rode Badminton at 5 months gone or something, right?

Sure, taking up eventing for the first time when you've never been on a horse - perhaps a bad idea.

I think it's crap, frankly. But you clearly need to decide yourself.

Feeling much better on the sickness front today, but veeerry bloated and "gassy". Fresh mint tea seems to have settled it. We have a herb garden full of it but it's dying back for the winter so I think I will need to plant a load of it indoors. I don't like the tea bag version. I'm rather prone to collicky pains and this is a lot worse than normal... any suggestions?

Told a friend yesterday I was feeling a bit unwell so couldn't talk on the phone and have been hassled ever since, "you're not pregnant are you? is it morning sickness?" blah blah.

Actually feeling not pregnant today! Thinking I may POAS tomorrow just to make sure I didn't imagine it all!!

WHY DIDN'T SHE WARN ME???

iggy I think these articles are really biased towards women who never exercise. e.g., when pregnant it wouldn't be the best time to learn to ride and likewise I won't be choosing now to learn to run a marathon...

As far as over-heating goes, I plan for when I'm out hacking to just have a bottle of water in my pocket and pretty much go at a pace which pleases me... so I think there's going to be a lot more solo hacking. Seriously though, how often do you ride yourself out of breath with sweat pissing off you?

haha@carrots and your camping sister

Cosmosis ah, that's right - you were a secret knitter weren't you?

Symptoms. I want to talk about gas. Is anyone else having farting problems? The gas hits me so fast & "effectively" that I'll be walking across the office, feel it coming, know I can't hold it in and all I can pray for is "please God, let it be silent". Just me?

Report
CurlyCasper · 17/11/2009 08:46

ski my problems at that end are more "present" than just gas !

May I have some advice please PESH lovelies. Poor SFF has been a bit quiet. Turns out that in addition to the general fear/excitement of impending fatherhood, he is worried about being selfish over a trip he had planned to go on in June with the lads. It's more than just a lads' weekend. They share a common pasttime/sport and wish to indulge in said hobby in a Scandanivian country for the first week of June. he was all defeated and "I know I can't go but I'm still a bit gutted, but I'm excited about the baby and all".

My first thought is that it will be week 34ish for me and the probability of a premature birth will be low. That said, we'd both be in a state if he was to miss it.

I kind of said that once we've had the scan and all seems ok, perhaps he can book the trip, then deal with the reality of things when the time comes.

What do you think? Should I be more selfish about it and say no (he would stay home if I asked) and should be both just chill and let him get on with it?

Told MIL last night - first grandchild for her. Talk about excited!

Curly Why not keep it as an option right now, pay the deposit/whatever - you never know, come May you may be thinking "oh fuckofftoswedenyoubastard" anyway... Or, you may be feeling really needy and want him to hang around and rub your feet. I'm not sure you need to make that decision just yet.

Jailbait is being really good, he had his panic in June so is totally chilled now although he did manage to leave me to go to the farm shop on my own on saturday and lug a 20kg bag of horse food to the stables. Next time he'll be helping. Stupid me got a bit upset about it.

I'm constantly hungry too and keep waking at 4am to eat.

yay for MIL!

ski you is right - I is silly - rarely get overheated and will stop jumping anyway.

ghosty reckon he should do what ski suggests - is early to make decisions.

I has no symptoms today - feel like is A BAD SIGN - but then I am fucking para.

can I get some violence please?

There ya go!

I think the riding should be OK as long as you don't go bonkers... so the Grand National is a no-go for 2010. I'm just going to see how I feel on a day-to-day basis I suppose, although they're in the process of booking a beach holiday with the horses for mid-April I think and I don't think that's going to be possible. By then I'll be 6 months and what if she sees all those miles of sand and goes for it? Actually, I trust her, but I'm not 100% sure I trust everyone else to keep control of their horses... now, how to wriggle out of this hol? Well, I still want to do the hol but not take my horsey.

iggy No symptoms? Not even a fart if you push? PYB PYB PYB! (poke your boobs)

moving on -
Can you go to the hol horseless tho??

iggy I haven't felt nauseous since last week tbh but I've had a few wombles, hunger, FARTS and still not made it past half past nine - and that includes falling asleep on the sofa and being woken up at half eight for NCIS.

Maybe you're just one of those lucky ones?

Yes, the hol is open to anyone and you can take partners/kids/horses & dogs if you want to. The yard owner herself is not taking her horses because she doesn't trust them... but I've been banging on about it being a dream for me to take Ginger... maybe I ought to just hand over the deposit and come clean at 12 weeks?

Iggy I was thinking this morning, could PESH violence damage our baybeez? Take a punch to the arm. What ski said about the riding is what I was trying to say. I don't have much in the way of preg symptoms in some ways, listening to others who can't get out of bed for puking.

Here's mine:

  • Norks def bigger and tender/painful. Have to take off bra carefully as when they are released and swing down to my knees (as they do) it's really painful!

  • On and off nausea. Had to throw away my tea this morning and replace with cordial. Sainsburys do a Taste the Difference one with ginger which I will bring in tomorrow.

  • Gas - oh yeah, baby. Not so much today but yesterday really bad. Lots of burping, too.

  • Did have the odd twinge and cramp a few days ago but that seems to have stopped now.

iggy when things went wrong before, did you get pregnancy symptoms? Did you get any warning?

casper I would also agree to get SFF to put the deposit down. It's pretty early before the event and it would be a shame for him to miss it when you get there and everything seems really well. If you're not so good then he can decide not to go then.

I is just comparing it to last time and seem to have less symptoms - but gonna stop being a para menkul and chill - que sera etc.

I would pay deposit - then come clean at 12weeks - best way i think.

Yay! The midwives I wanted are taking me on and phoning me back soon with a time for my first appointment. I feel so tired - would anyone mind if I just laid my head down for a moment or two... ?

iggy I'm not 100% we have to pay deposit for the horsies - anyway, it's only 60 euros for the 3 day's accommodation for them anyway so it's not exactly extortionate. I saw your thread in the Tack Room and I think you should do whatever you want to do and feel comfortable with. You can still cuddle him.
