Hi ladies
Thanks for the nap-related tips for DS1 everyone, I've decided to just shorten his nap for the time being, and hopefully as the weather improves (hah!) I'll be able to tire him out in the garden a bit more in the afternoon.

I think half the problem has been that he's in desperate need of some fresh air and running around. We went up to the beach at Southwold yesterday to give us all some fresh air and a bit of exercise (in the howling wind and p*ing rain) and he did actually go down to sleep quite well last night (although he got up about 5 times in the night) so that's a start. Who knows eh?

Actually that reminds me of a great bit of advice for the first timers. It's going to sound pessimistic but I mean it to be helpful!

When DS1 was tiny he cried a LOT and didn't sleep well at all. I kept a meticulous diary of his feeds, poos, wees, sleeps, you name it, in the hope of finding a pattern that would explain what was wrong and enable me to put it right so he'd sleep better.

DON'T BOTHER!!

I never found a pattern, it never helped, and I realised that my Mother's advice was right. Some babies sleep well, some feed well, some do neither well, but you'll probably never find out why so don't worry aobout it, just do whatever you can / need to at the time to survive and eventually they'll grow out of it (and into a different, equally challenging phase!). Generally speaking there is neither rhyme nor reason to it. Babies cry. End of.

Like I say, not meant to be pessimistic. Just philosophical perhaps.

And yes, you can all remind me of those words in a couple of months' time when I'm on here going "Why won't DS2 stop crying / sleep properly?"

Hope you're all enjoying your weekends. Can't believe it's March tomorrow!

Zeeky · 01/03/2010 09:07

Hi All,

We finally got all the baby stuff down from the loft yesterday. It had started to play on my mind that we had NOTHING ready for baby! So I spent the afternoon sorting through all the baby clothes to find the unisex vests/sleepsuits etc. I did a massive shop for nappies, nipple pads, cotton wool etc a while back which we had shoved up in the loft out of the way, so it took a while to sort it all out. Don't think we really need to get much now apart from a new moses basket mattress. But it depends if I can get the stains out of the newborn vests and sleepsuits. I'm sure they were perfectly clean and white when they were packed away, but now there are yellow patches around the neck where DS must have been sick/dribbled.

Realised last night that DS will only have been in nursery for a week when my due date comes around. So annoyed that I didn't realise this sooner as really wanted him settled there before baby arrives. When I signed him up they said the soonest they could take him was after Easter holidays, and as Easter is start of April I had in my mind that he would have 3 weeks to settle before baby comes, but my stupid pregnancy-brain forgot about the 2 weeks holiday . I was looking forward to the break for a couple of mornings a week before baby comes too! Just have to hope that DS settles in ok and doesn't feel that the baby has pushed him out. It will be the first time I will have left him anywhere other than with friends/family for an hour or two.

Bettymum · 01/03/2010 12:24

Snowtiger at your diary. My friend did that too, she even included what she ate each day and how she felt.
Poor DD was poorly this weekend, she's had a dreadful chesty cough all week but has been perky enough, we went for a long walk on Saturday to see the snowdrops which I thought would do her good but perhaps I overdid it with the fresh air. She was like a limpet yesterday, we went to my parents for lunch and she wouldn't let go of me at all, I had to eat with her snuggled up on my lap and my mum cut my food up for me so I could eat with one hand . In the end I left half way through pudding and took her home, she was doing awful laboured breathing in the car all the way which was horrible. I phoned the hospital as soon as we got in, they said to give her the max dose of Calpol and plenty to drink, half an hour later she was a different child happily playing in the sitting room. I felt really bad for not giving it to her earlier.
So another top tip for new mums: don't forget the Calpol !!

Snowtiger · 01/03/2010 13:11

Good tip Bettymum, how people coped before Calpol came along is anyone's guess. DS1 practically lives on the stuff

Bettymum · 01/03/2010 13:45

Another top tip just in: don't let go of your buggy on an escalator!!
Was just in a shop trying to pay for a baby bath, a couple came in with dad pushing a toddler in a buggy and mum with a baby in a sling, next thing there's a big crash and the dad and the empty upsidedown buggy are going up the escalator, the mum is still at the bottom, and the poor toddler is in tears on the floor - I don't know what had happened but the buggy had tipped over on the escalator and the (previously sleeping) toddler had fallen out backwards since she wasn't strapped in. The mum and dad were both very calm, I'd have been in hysterics. I think the little girl was OK but I was .

Neeko · 01/03/2010 13:55

OMG Why would you put a child in a buggy on an escalator?? And if you did, why wouldn't you strap them in? Poor child

ReneRusso · 01/03/2010 14:03

Yikes, that sounds awful bettymum. I let the buggy roll into the road once though . Was lucky it was a quiet road and no cars around. Those are the moments you never forget.

I've got off my lazy ass and washed a whole stack of old crib sheets blankets and grobags I've been given, and cleaned out the changing table. D'you think I'm nesting?!! The effort was tremendous, I had a little lie down afterwards

Has anyone bought a baby monitor? I noticed they have come on rather a lot since I last had a baby (nearly 8 years ago), now they are all singing and all dancing with video etc. Does anyone think there is a safety issue with digital monitors, i.e. levels of electromagnetic radiation? Or am I being a bit paranoid?

Zeeky · 01/03/2010 14:53

A bit of a personal question, but is anyone doing/planning to do some perineum massage?

As part of the hypnobirthing course I have done this time, the teacher has told us that it is really important to do this to have an easier birth and reduce risk of tearing/episiotomy. I've bought a little bottle of extra virgin olive oil (recommended to be the best to use - told to steer clear of the chilli oil ouch!), but can't bring myself to start. Had lots of stitches last time which would really like to try to avoid this time.

Would really like to hear from any of you who have tried it previously or or planning to give it a go...

ROFL at chili oil .
I tried it once or twice last time using Bio Oil but didn't keep it up. I ended up with an episiotomy and stitches so maybe I should give it a go this time.

Snowtiger · 01/03/2010 15:11

Yes I'm doing perineal massage too, Zeeky.

I did it last time with DS1 (did hypnobirthing / Gentle Birth Method too) and had totally natural birth with no tears or stitches needed at all, so am definitely doing it again.

Funnily enough it's more uncomfortable than I remember!! (Not painful, but not exactly fun) But definitely worth a go. Books say to start it from 36 weeks but I've started early just to be on the safe side in case DS2 turns up early. I want everything to be as ready as it can be!!

Definitely steer clear of the chilli oil....

Zeeky · 01/03/2010 15:15

Just had a quick search on mumsnet discussions about perineum massage and there seems to be a very mixed view on whether it helps or not.

Think I'll give it a go if I can manage to contort around my bump. Don't really fancy the idea of DH having a go - sounds like a bit of a passion-killer

Snowtiger · 01/03/2010 15:21

Probably TMI Zeeky but I do it with one leg up on the side of the bath, and reach round from behind rather than trying to reach over my bump, if that makes sense.

Anything rather than having to ask DH to do it!! Bleurgh!!

I've seen a few of the threads you've mentioned and yes, some people don't think it's worth it but my own stance is that for the sake of 10 minutes a day, if I can give myself a better chance of not tearing, then I'll do it. You'll never know if it helped or not really, I guess, but personally I think it's worth a go - nothing ventured and all that.

Snowtiger · 01/03/2010 15:24

By the way ladies, have you noticed we're not far off the 1000 posts mark on this thread? We'll have to start a new one soon, and I don't know about you but I think we deserve a really good thread title this time!! (No offence rtuff, this thread title was a very pertinent question at the time!)

Shall we have a competition amongst ourselves for the best Due-In-April thread title in readiness for the new thread?

(or do I just have too much time on my hands and a talent for procrastination...?)

Rtuff · 01/03/2010 17:11

None taken snowtiger, i wasn't planning on it being the title of our thread!! Otherwise, obviously i would have come up with something very witty & intelligent of course!!

Competetion for thread title sounds good.... now where did i put that wit and intelligence...

I can't actually believe i'm having a baby this month (planned c-section - 25th March) all slighlty too real now!! Although having moved area i have got an appointment with consultant tomorrow to re-confirm c-section... hopefully date wont change too much!

Renerusso I think im nesting too i have literally done 10 loads of washing in the last 2 days (mainly ds1 old clothes bedding etc, went and finished baby shopping at the weekend plus i've packed my hospital bag this morning and cleaned the house.... then this afternoon i've been planting in the garden with ds1... absolutely shattered now!

Is anyone having real issues with sleeping? a combination of the constant need to wee and total discomfort i'm awake and up and about at least 4 or 5 times a night!!

Anyway ramble, ramble, ramble......

My thread title contribution Drip Drip Drop little April baby shower....any bambi fans out there???

thedollshouse · 01/03/2010 18:09

I like that thread title Rtuff.

I can't believe that the time is almost here for us to have our babies! When the original thread was started it seemed a million years away and the first 6 months took forever to pass. Now time is flying by!

I'm feeling very guilty at the moment I just don't seem to be in control of ds at the moment he is constantly chucking his toys around, being naughty and raiding the biscuit tin. I don't have the energy to put aa stop to it and I just seem to tell him off but let him get on with it anyway.

I'm not on top of anything at the moment, I made a shepherds pie for dinner tonight and it is burnt to a cinder, I can't work out why as I think I put it in the oven for the usual time.

I was supposed to meet a friend today but had to cancel as I was sick this morning and didn't feel up to it. Some other friends are trying to get me to agree to an evening out before the baby arrives but I just don't want to go anywhere. All of my friends have children so they have been through this before but don't seem to understand when I try to explain that I'm really not good company at the moment. When I was pregnant with ds people just left me to my own devices.

I really am a miserable old bag, every time I post on this thread I am moaning!

Zeeky · 01/03/2010 19:20

Snowtiger - 10 mins of massage per day !!! Our Hypno therapist said to start with 1 min per day and build up to 2 mins per day. You will have the most supple and relaxed perineum in the world . Thanks for the tip re. positioning - will give it a go.

Dollshouse - know what you mean about the guilt with letting DS get away with murder. He's been watching soooo much TV recently and getting loads of snacks as I just don't have the energy to be strict and it means less nagging for me to sit on the floor playing lego/jigsaws etc. Instead I just slump on the sofa watching endless Disney DVDs or Peppa Pig . I get a really energy slump mid-afternoon, but then feel better in the evening once DS has gone to bed - a coincidence ?

Snowtiger · 01/03/2010 20:51

Zeeky I'd take my '10 mins' with a pinch of salt, that time includes faffing about, telling DS to go and play with his toys for a minute while Mummy does something in the bathroom and clearing up the oil afterwards when I've inevitably spilt it, given how bloomin' clumsy I am at the moment!!

I'm the same with letting DS get away with a lot at the moment, i don't have the energy for the battles and also feel slightly guilty in advance for how our lives are going to change so am probably over-compensating a bit with Cadbury's chocolate fingers and letting him live on sausage, chips and beans.

Dollshouse I'm exactly the same about not wanting to go out - am supposed to be going to a nephew's birthday lunch next week, a friends' 40th do the following Saturday evening and a niece's birthday lunch a couple of weeks after that, and frankly I'd rather stay at home and do the ironing . The thought of the 40th in particular does my head in - being this uncomfortable, and sober, surrounded by (and taxi driver to) a load of drunk people really doesn't appeal.

Like the thread title rtuff, (and glad you didn't take offence, I was sure you didn't mean that to be our thread title for the next however-many-months!) my brain's turned to porridge and I'm scrabbling around in vain for something witty and intelligent but for the sake of competition how about:

April fools or happy Easter bunnies? Either way our babies are here!

or

April babies - our Easter Eggs are hatching!

Hmm, and me a writer for a living, that's shameful

tostaky · 01/03/2010 21:23

re-perineum massage - uh... maybe im too prude or something but im not doing it... i do drink raspberry leaf tea and ive booked my first session with the accupuncturist. ive also ordered a hypno-birthing cd on ebay and im doing yoga at the active birth centre... im hoping that being upright and active will help me not to tear in labour...

re-DS - i am the same as you, however i am very lucky to be able to drop him at nursery every day so i can rest properly or prepare the house/do whatever things need to be done before DS2...

dwayne mine is also back to back... i do try to do 5 mins of circling my bum around when on all fiours every day but im sure it is not enough! do you think accupuncture can help? i'll ask at my first session

im focusing on my birth plan atm... it is a big deal for me... and dp doesnt always agree with me (bc he likes to discuss everything even though he hasnt done any research about what he is talking about - that really annoys me and then the discussion stops.. so annoying...) im thinking maybe about a doula or independent midwife bc they'll understand me better than dp, but they are expensive....and ive got only 4 weeks in front of me....(or maybe less???)

wizbitwaffle i have the same problem re sample, why do they give us such a small bottle when you obviously can't see a damn thing past the ever expanding tummy!

I went to my consultant appt today and they have changed my c-section date to the 29th March although i'm not sure i'm going to make it till then the baby was 2/5 palpable (3/5 engaged)!!When i asked is this normal at 35+5, she said "no, usually with 2nd pregnancies babies don't engage till just before or during labour" but i'm soooo fed up now anyway i wouldn't mind if he came a little early.

27 days left and counting!!
