As we all talk so fast the last thread is nearly full so thought I would start us off on a new one

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
quirkychick · 31/07/2009 17:31

Thanks lynneevans have been waiting all week and was just thinking I hadn't heard yet so it must be good news .

jardins · 31/07/2009 17:56

Dear Quirkychick I'm with you all the way. Please don't hesitate to post when ever you need to brainstorm 'aloud'. As you know from all my rants I know what you're going through. Since making my decision - AND BELIEVE ME I was oscillating between the two options for ever and a day - the worry has taken to the sky like a balloon! Cough, what I mean is that I feel much lighter. I was seriously opting for the amnio until the ultravsound doc suggested the detailed scan at 18 weeks.

Excuse me for being foolish but I don't get why my combined result is so good - 1/1043 when my two other numbers are so so: 1/344 and 1/189 (the real worrier)? Any educated guesses?

jardins · 31/07/2009 17:59

ps I believe FlightofFancy that honey does not cause tooth decay, if my daughter's school trip to the bee keepers has taught me correctly!

mowmi · 31/07/2009 18:38

Quirky - sorry you didn't get a result that put you at ease. I know they put a cut off point in for a reason but the chances are really slim that your baby is affected. There is nothing I can say to make this easier for you. If you are going to worry and ruin the rest of your pregnancy than you might one to consider it?
Where would you have it done?

quirkychick · 31/07/2009 20:33

Thanks jardins and mowmi for your lovely words and support.

I have just spoken to a friend in RL who had amnio for youngest which was really helpful. Will try to speak to another friend who had a similar situation. I'm not sure what my blood results alone were as have been told over phone only combined results. The consultant I spoke to today said the miscarriage rate for Norwich & Norfolk hospital was closer to 0.5% which kind of threw me as I was weighing it up against 1%. DP and friend say that it is still a low risk so I have to decide how much I need to know for sure. I don't think I could forgive myself if I miscarried a healthy baby, though.

sazlocks · 31/07/2009 20:44

hard decision quirkychick - thinking of you

Feeling huge already and need to get a bit more active now I am feeling a bit more sprightly and have stopped being sick. I am not going to bother weighing myself as I think as last time I will put on lots and then lose lots in the first 6 months after birth. As I am 99.9999% this will be my last child I am already saving for some intensive personal training once I stop breastfeeding so that I can get back into shape before I hit the big 40 in a couple of years.

timmette · 01/08/2009 06:38

Hi quirkychick that is a difficult decision to make, you can always come here and chat to us if it helps.
sazlocks I am feeling huge too and this is also my last chid sadly and now must confess to having bought a pram - I now it is early but I can't resist a bargain.

HappyBump · 01/08/2009 07:44

quirkychick hello - sorry the results weren't more clear for you. I don't envy you having to make this difficult decision. As the others have said if you want to chat we are here to listen.

I've bought a bellyband ... I can't decide if it looks really silly or not ... I guess with an oversized wobbly tummy you never really look that glamorous ... I've decided to ditch it for the moment and -squeeze- -into- put on some lower cut trousers and just wear a baggier t-shirt. Why do other people always look so great when they are pregnant? I can't wait until my tummy gets bigger and more firm.

quirkychick · 01/08/2009 20:38

Thanks sazlocks, timmette and HappyBump.

I have felt calmer today, was a bit in shock yesterday tbh. I am veering towards thinking that 1/224 is not really that bad odds but I am going to try and find out the miscarriage rate of the consultant I saw. He is away until Tues, so I might phone him then, if it is very low it puts a slightly different light on it. Also, if I do go for the amnio we might cough up and get early results in a few days rather than wait a few weeks. Both dp and I would be gutted if it was a non-ds baby and I miscarried, though.

totalmisfit · 02/08/2009 08:37

quirkychick - that must be really worrying for you. sounds like an impossible decision to have to make. i have no experience of this but i can say that i've found N&N to be a fantastic hospital on every occasion i've had to visit (mainly due to dd's asthma, admittedly) since we moved here a year ago. I know that's probably not incredibly reassuring but the staff seem to know what they're doing iykwim.

somewhathorrified · 02/08/2009 08:47

I went to watch DH's band last night (normal thing for me to do) after telling the guys that I'd been really lucky and had practically no symptoms I suddenly went lightheaded, nearly fainted and had to be half carried to the toilets about 2 mins b4 they were due to play...talk about timing! This happened (not so severly) later on again. I guess the embarrassing symptoms have started .

totalmisfit · 02/08/2009 08:56

I weighed myself yesterday - put on 6lb!! i'm 15 weeks and people have started staring at my belly trying to work out if i'm pregnant or just fat . i've started jumping in to save their embarrassment or mine by patting my belly and going 'yep, and we've got another one the way' to which they inevitably reply 'oh, i thought so, only i didn't like to say anything...'. Great.

When we were ttc i had all these noble ideas about how much better i was going to eat this time around; i was going to stick to 'the pregnancy diet' in 'What to Expect...' etc. The trouble is, even though the nausea has mostly passed, i still don't really fancy fruit and veg like i did before i was pregnant. When it comes to carbs, i'd much rather eat white bread than brown and that goes for rice and pasta too. After the shock i had on the scales yesterday perhaps i do need to force myself to 'like' these things again.

timmette · 02/08/2009 12:38

totalmisfit don't worry about it I have only gained 1 kilo that's 2 pounds and I look 6 months pregnant already and feel it - lol. I am eating a lot of fruit but the veg are lacking and I love my veg.

sleepingalot · 02/08/2009 12:41

Morning ladies,

been away for week visiting in-laws and just trying to catch up with the thread.

quirkychick I hope you come to a decision that you're happy with for your own peace of mind.

totalmisfit before I went to visit in-laws I had put on 5 Lbs since start of pregnancy. 1 week of MIL and have managed to double that!!! Definately have to start some exercise!

Hi to everyone else, hope all is well.

quirkychick · 02/08/2009 14:03

Thanks for the messages everyone.

totalmisfit my dd has been at the N&N for asthma too, we were in for 2 nights a few weeks ago and have been referred to the hospital asthma clinic. The Jenny Lind children's dept are excellent, dd was under the dietician there until she was 2. I do feel I have rather lived at the N&N recently though!

totalmisfit · 02/08/2009 18:59

oh you poor thing, and your poor dd, we have luckily only had to go as far as the children's assessment unit (sent there from children's a&e) and the last time it happened after umpteen salbutamol and atravent nebulisers and 2 lots of steroids they finally sent her home, but that was scary enough. They haven't 'officially' diagnosed her because of her age, of course...

bethoo · 02/08/2009 20:12

18 weeks exactly today! yippee
was at my sisters wedding yesterday and it was lovely.
me and dp are trying to work things through so watch this space, but my whole family love him so no pressure!!!
at my 16 week mw appointment i had not gained a thing though i had been living off salads! not so the past two weeks though! still in mostly normal clothes so treat myself to skinny fit maternity jeans and a fitted maternity top and some gorgeous platform type shoes that make me 5 foot 8 rather than 5 foot 4!
had a spot of blood the other day but have no idea what from as it was miniscule but still a worry.
Quirky all the best and to be honest i have nto thought about the results as not yet recieved them, i never got a nuchal fold test so hope the blood test will suffice. i know that you will do what youi feel is best and we will all support you.
alibobins it may be too early for any real ysignificance ot be noticed yet for your dd but hope that you will see some progress soon x
crumpette it still astounds me to hear about how badly you are treated at work, being pregnant puts you at high risk full stop so ext time someone comes in with suspected swine flu pack up and go home and if anyone says anything record it as i seriously think that waht is going on is nothing short of fuel for a tribunal, it is absolutley disgusting. what are HR like? surely they must be supportive otherwise they are not doing their job correctly?

lynneevans51 · 02/08/2009 20:18

Bethoo - so glad to hear you had a lovely weekend and that you and DP are trying to work things out! Keep us all informed and vent if you need to. AND v v jealous that you have not gained weight and are able to no doubt look absolutely fab in skinny jeans and platform shoes!!! Have been in rotten mat clothes since week 8 - grrrrrrrr

lilacpink · 02/08/2009 21:19

quirky sorry to hear of your dilemma. My DD is also 3, and with her I wouldn't have had a DS test (if available), but having an existing child to care for I decided this time to have all tests going. Having said that, the odds are in your favour, 1/224 still means 223 times all will be fine, so I can see why you must be torn between making a decision. Jardins is having a scan at 18 weeks, could this be an option to also help? (i.e. see if heart and nuchal looks ok then?). I hope your doctors are helping, and you'll have more information soon.

totalmisfit I could have written your line about diet - don't fancy healthy food & prefer white bread! I can eat salad, but only if smoothered in mayonnaise I've put on 5lb, and just joined a Pregnancy Pilates class to help me work out what I can actually do (no exercise with DD and 4stone extra by the end!).

quirkychick · 02/08/2009 21:30

totalmisfit the children's assessment unit are fab aren't they? We've been admitted twice now that's why we've been referred to the asthma clinic. Dd seems to fade after one night and then pick up the next day. We're doing an asthma diary at the moment too. I guess we have been diagnosed but I/they think it's viral.

lilacpink thank you. I think I might feel clearer when I speak to the consultant (he's back on Tues). If his miscarriage rates are quite low it makes the amnio a safer option. It really is weighing up the possibility of losing a healthy baby with having a ds baby with an already existing child. I have been talking to friends in RL who have had similar dilemmas which is useful.

Fraochsmum · 03/08/2009 16:51

Hi there, I just discovered this thread today and hope you don't mind me jumping on and sharing a bit about my experience so far?
I am exactly 18 weeks pg with my first (due 6th Jan) and mighty excited we are about it too! I have been very lucky so far: no nausea/vomitting, headaches, cravings etc. I have been quite lethargic though and had chest pains in the 1st trimester - which I now put down to jumping from a 36B-34E in a short space of time. I had some bleeding early on which was investigated and turned out to be an eroded cervix, so quite relieved. Had my blood tests for ds and sb a week and a half ago, which must have turned out fine or else I would have heard by now. I am not obviously pregnant (looking) just now so am not getting the special treatment yet i.e. people letting you past when loaded down with bags or not apologising when bashing into you.
For those with headaches - my hospital offer accupuncture foc if it continues through your pregnancy - maybe yours do too?
Look forward to getting to know you!
FM x
