My MIL also had an undiagnosed breech (seems like MWs weren't very good at palpating in the past) but delivered naturally. This was her first of 4 and i'm surprised she went on to have more, but basically my SIL was a footling breech, and somehow they got forceps in and right around my SILs head and pulled her out feet first . My PIL said they didn't take any photos of her in those early days as the foreceps had left the top of her head/face very squashed.

Belgianchocolates · 06/05/2009 13:39

They do say that mums and daughters tend to have similar births and that I got from a better source (just can't remember where I read it) than what I've said about babies coming early/late, that was just what I've noticed, but as I said by no means scientifically proven . A few of you mentioned that they found this and I too had similar births to my mum. Even though a minority of labours start with waters breaking first, both my mum's labours started that way and both labours I've experienced up til now too. Both of us had fairly quick and easy births too (about 5h). So I keep wondering whether this labour will start with my waters going first too. My mum never had a no3, so I can't compare

spangle I'm sorry to hear about your mum's horrible birth experience. It's truly horrible what used to happen to women in the past. I know your mum is not the only one who had a similar experience back then. You often hear of post natal councelling services being opened and then being flooded by women who had traumatic experiences 30-40+ years ago. I think that luckily we've improved from back then and even learnt from those mistakes.

pulapula · 06/05/2009 13:42

flippineck- sorry to hear about your mother too . No wonder you were worried about undiagnosed breech yourselves.

DOn't think there is any similarity between mine and my mother's birth experiences- her first was 2 weeks early, I was on time, and with my brother, she spent 13 weeks in hospital before being induced- think it might have been high BP. She also had really bad stomach pains 3 weeks before having me, and it was her appendix and somehow they managed to remove it whilst i was inside .

Belgianchocolates · 06/05/2009 13:47

It's only fairly recent that breech birth is being treated as a problem. Up until I think about the 70's somewhere it was just seen as another version of normal, just not as comomn and most were delivered without any problems. Nowadays breech is treated as problematic and so virtually always delivered via c/s unless it's undiagnosed and a quick delivery. This has lead to a deskilling of drs and mws and as a result has made a vaginal breech delivery more risky as there isn't many staff skilled in doing this type of delivery. Mws and obs learn about the theory, have your regular skills drills regarding breech, but that's no replacement for real hands on experience.

Belgianchocolates · 06/05/2009 13:50

pula my mum and I have had v. different pregnancies, though both had trouble in our own way. It was only the actual labour that was the same. I bet if you put her labour notes next to mine, you could interchange them! Well, except for the shave and enema thing they used to do in the '70's. Oh and the lying flat on your back bit with a dr attending a normal birth...

On a totally different subject now: Hurray our broody chicken is now officially back to normal and has laid her 1st egg in nearly 3 weeks today!!

Belgianchocolates · 06/05/2009 13:52

dandy My stomach goes hard when I change position, mostly usually when I go and sit down somewhere, I get the heavy feeling then too, but not the fatigue. I just think it's a b/h triggered by my movement.

Belgianchocolates · 06/05/2009 13:54

Hey, it looks like I'm starting to do a Detsy. 3 posts in a row all by myself. Oh well, I think I'm going to go and do a little cross stitching. That's about as active as I can be at the moment. How exciting

pulapula · 06/05/2009 14:01

belgian- i'm here now. I don't think my labour was similar to my mums- hers was very quick, mine was very long, and ended up with rotational ventouse. After that its been elcs for me so can't compare.

flippineck · 06/05/2009 14:02

Mine does the rock hard thing just caused by moving - it scares DH every time I stand up and say 'ooh'! Also when I have a wee!

Belgian - agree about the breech deskilling, after DD's birth (and particularly knowing the family history) I did quite a lot of reading, really nteresting stuff. I was all set to fight for a vaginal delivery if this one was breech (and I was expecting it to be), despite everything - I've done it once, so why not again?

detsy · 06/05/2009 14:08

Right - that is most def the last time I'm posting about imminent labour. This morning I don't even feel pregnant except for some acrobatics from jnr. I was sooo convinced last night - pah pah pah.

Still' I've finished my basket liners this morning - couldn't do it last night as too uncomfy

Just realised I haven't put my out of office message on my work e mail - how very professional of me....NOT

Aqua congratulations - what a bummer about the post birth surgery but main thing is that you and Ethan are safe and well.

Off to sulk and potter about.....

detsy · 06/05/2009 14:11

lol belgian won't happen to me for a while (talking to myself on here malarkey) as am in too big a sulk

Dragging DP upstairs now - NO NO NO you dirty minded gals - to tidy, muck out, bin, loft store the spare room

Bye for now x

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 06/05/2009 14:13

Spangle How appalling for your mum - just awful. And flippineck too.

My brother was late, I was early and an awkward and painful breech (had one leg & foot turned outwards OUCH!!). My DD's were both 2 weeks over, so I'm erring on the side of being overdue again .

Dandy I feel an overwhelming sense of weight and fatigue all the bloody time. God, I hope the schools thing gets sorted for you, you're an amazingly pro-active person - I would be sitting around complaining and whatnot, you're out pounding the pavements and SORTING.

Finished with my cooking for now. Am snuggling the dog again, my post made it sound like I'd been really violent 'dragging her out' - I wasn't (I'm really worried I'll get a rep as a dog-beater). I think she's a bit pissed off because she's had a couple of days where everyone has been out for most of the day and she's got a bit scared and worried - I'm normally at home with her.

Nearly school collection time, just time for a cup of redbush tea.

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 06/05/2009 14:18

Oh and MIL's and 'have you had it yet?' - I just ignore the phone when I see MIL number but DH's Nana has a withheld number - she always says 'Oh you will tell us, won't you. Please don't forget us' in a quavery voice. Bless her, she always manages to ring at an incredibly inconvenient time, but she's so sweet. She rang every day for 3 weeks when I was pregnant with DD, from 39 weeks until I went 2 weeks over. That got a little frustrating.

Blottedcopybook · 06/05/2009 14:53

Horror birth stories - my Nana had my Mum at 31 weeks in 1963. The day she went into labour her Doctor told her that her baby had no head and was obviously going to die so she should stop knitting and let nature take it's course, of course my Nana went straight home and into labour! My Mum did indeed have a head (although her ear wasn't fully developed) but spent 3 months in hospital. My poor Nana was a policeman's wife and had three other children at home - she apparently got the bus across Edinburgh twice a day with all the children to see my Mum. Just goes to show you!

My labours have all been very different - DS1 I spontaneously laboured at 40+5, DS2 was induced at 42w and my labour with DD was stopped around 35w then induced at 37w. I would reeeeeally like to go into labour pretty much any time from now! But I'm not feeling even remotely twingy.

I must be nesting though - I just scrubbed the detergent tray and seal of the washing machine because really that was the most pressing thing needing done in the house today. Ah well, the little DCs are asleep, eldest will be home from school in 20 minutes and I'm considering a trip downstairs to get a cuppa and a biscuit. But I'm quite comfy in bed

Oh - Grumpy, the change mat thingy was deeead easy. Do you have a sewing machine? If you want I can send you an email with a sketch of what I did and an explanation?

Tummum · 06/05/2009 14:57

Hello everyone. One handed typing here after another sleep free night. Sigh.

Couple of questions for the more experienced of you.

  1. boys danglies (!) The end of G's is really sore and bright red... is this normal / can I out anything on it e.g. suducreme? Does't seem to bother him apart from when he is doing a wee.
  1. BF - how much water should I be drinking? A pint per feed?

Monimo any sign of milk? \Think mine is starting at last

Spangle how awful for your mother. very very Also Dndy for your experiences with DD. I feel very fortunate.

Belgian IKWYM about relief getting to due date. I felt the same on 1st May. At least there is only a finite time now

Grrrrs to all annoying MWs asking stupid questions. I feel your pain.

Gotta dash. Gonna attempt to leave the house... !

Blottedcopybook · 06/05/2009 15:02

TumMum - can you (very gently) pull his foreskin back a little (not fully!) - it could be that it's maybe a little tight for him. It also could just be that after 9 months without a nappy on his wee man just wants to roam free! I'd stick with something a bit lighter than sudocreme just now, maybe vaseline or metanium if you can get it? Drink as much as you feel comfortable with, a pint per feed sounds like quite a lot. I used to have a glass of milk or water and a bit of fruit or cake whenever I was feeding in the early days but that's because I'm a greedy mare.

I just got a text from DiveDaisy - they're being released today

I have updated the list and also posted this in the birth announcements topic here to make it easier to find the list and update it every time rather than searching through the thread. Hope that's OK.

1stMrsF · 06/05/2009 15:43

Hi - just a quick one. I popped back to get so many lovely messages of congratulations from you that really made me feel proud! Thank you!

Reggiee - didn't see your OP on tongue tie but picked up from others that your LO is having it snipped on Thursday. It has made an AMAZING difference to Amelia and she only had a very thin 50% tie. She was only feeding for 20 mins at a time because it was so tiring for her. They get you to feed straight after the cut as the breastmilk helps to soothe and heal and so they can see whether they are OK to feed. Amelia took a while to get on the breast as usual and for the first few attempts, was feeding much the same. Then she realised that she was able to do things she couldnt do before (including sticking her tongue out which she does often now when looking at us LOL) and started really sucking deeply and went on to feed for 40 minutes without stopping! Back at home she took only 20mls of her top up and for the next 3 feeds last night either refused formula after the breast feed or went down to sleep. I have given one top up today because she was still hungry but falling asleep at the breast, but she only took 30 mls then, so she is already much less dependent on the formula and is feeding more effectively overall than Georgie now.

Bit rambly, but hopefully helpful...

SesIsNowCountingdownthedays · 06/05/2009 15:53

Pula - good idea, thanks for the link.

My Mum was late with all of us three (although less with each) and suprisingly her labours got longer each time!

Frazz - hope your scan went ok?

Went to the Baby Cafe with NCT girls this morning. Scary thought that I could be a mum within days!!

Momino · 06/05/2009 16:12

Pula, thanks for the list and link. i'll update in a moment with Harper's name.

swollen ankle: what do i do? i've gone through all 3 pregnancies with no swollen legs, feet etc. and just now, 4 days after giving birth i've noticed my left ankle is very swollen, bloated (ie, it doesn't hurt, haven't injured it). what do i do? anyone know what causes this? water retention? is it normal?

tummum, milk came in (painfully) monday PM but swollen breasts have settled down a little and less painful today. I also wonder if real milk is the cause of H's sleeplessness, maybe digesting is another change her little insides are adjusting to?

SesIsNowCountingdownthedays · 06/05/2009 16:15

Keep meaning to ask about the FB group. I'm on FB but haven't been able to find the group...

Febes · 06/05/2009 16:19

I have a blow fly buzzing around my lounge its horrible. Had a lovely long play in the garden today with DD.

1stMrsf the feeding sounds like its going really well. It must be really tiring feeding 2 at the same time. Make sure you have a good supply of cakes and drinks I'm so glad you feel really proud of yourself we are all proud of you too.

belgian happy due date- glad you are feeling positive about still being on the antenatal side of things but I hope for your sake you burst into labour very soon .

dandy sorry that you haven't heard anything more positive re DDs school placement. My friend teach in Southwark and I know it has over subscription problems.

pula thanks for updating the list scary to see there are only a couple of people in front of me now .

chat this afternoon. My Dad was born 6 weeks prem in 1951 in NZ and was in hospital for 2 months very ill must have been so stressful for my granny who had 2 DDs as well. Makes you very thankful.

Febes · 06/05/2009 16:21
