hi everyone, is anyone elses skin itching? my bump is driving me nuts at the moment. assume its just stretching or increased blood flow but sooo annoying.

breast pads - i have bought some tommee tippee disposable ones - probably because they were next to the tommee tippee bottles i bought in tesco. i didnt breast feed DS and not going to with this one either. it just doesnt appeal to me - but i'm not sure why.

glad you and baby are ok evie - take care!!

8 more weeks at work. seems a lifetime away!!

let us know how you scan went sleeves

lydiathetattooedlady · 05/05/2009 17:17

hi, hope everyones ok?? had my consultant and scan appointment today, but because my gtt test results werent back they wouldnt scan me so have to go back in 4 weeks for a scan. they basically tol;d me though that nothing will be done even if it does show baby is too big (ie no induction or poss c-section!) starting to panic as to whether i should have baby in hospital or the birth centre!
we've brought everything now just waiting for it to be delivered! think i may have to go on a clothes shop for baby though, as all our suits we planned on re-using from dd (those that weren't pink) only go up to about 7-8lbs!
anyway evie scary weekend hope you're ok now and taking it easy,as we all should be right now! take care everyone bye bye!

rubyriley · 05/05/2009 17:59

lydia Sorry they didn't scan you, that must have been disappointing as it's something we all look forward to. What did we all do before scans, eh?

Heard about a friend of a friend who went 10 days over recently and then had a stillborn baby. This is something we all dread and don't even like to discuss, but it came as a reality jolt for me today. I can't think of anything worse than going through childbirth and losing your baby, terribly sad to think someone's going through all of that, bearing in mind we're all starting to collect baby items Sorry to lower the mood!! Part of me thinks that medical care must be lacking for such an outcome or is it just a fluke & what can we do to be proactive and protect our unborn babies.

I must think positive thoughts, I must think positive thoughts. Am I getting jittery and is it only natural.......

hobnob57 · 05/05/2009 18:11

Helloooo there !

Just wanted to pop in and let you know that I had my 12 week scan today (at 13 weeks) and all is well with the new bubba!

I've been going bananas - not as sick as before again, etc. etc., so it's a great relief but still very hard to engage with this pg.

I hope you guys are all doing well and not to big and cumbersome yet. Looking forward to hearing news of the wee ones as they arrive!

rubyriley · 05/05/2009 18:13

mickeylou Forgot to say, friends bump also itching like mad so know you're not alone. Also, like you, I'm not breast feeding, didn't with my other 2 DS's either & they're both strapping, healthy young lads. Do know breast is best but it doesn't appeal to me either. Maybe we both need therapy

rubyriley · 05/05/2009 18:25

Ah hobnob CONGRATULATIONS!! That's just the cheery news I needed! Thanks for letting us know and keep us informed how things go, but looking goooooood!!

xxhunnyxx · 05/05/2009 18:30

hobnob glad to hear everything went well at your scan, make sure u keep us all updated.

ruby that's so sad about your friend's friend, like u said it's every woman's nightmare but unfortunately I don't think there's much that us or the professionals can do much to prevent, sometimes these things just happen . A similar thing happened to a friend of my friend, baby had a heart defect that hadn't been detected and only lived for 45 mins. It's so so sad, once we get to this stage we assume everything will be fine but then u hear these stories and it sends a shiver down your spine. Pregnancy and child birth is such a complicated thing, it still amazes me that 2 little cells make these little human beings, when u think about it it's amazing that so many of us end up with healthy babies, they really are such a precious gift. Gosh I'm getting emotional now!

I've booked for a 3D scan on Sunday, found a company that does them for £65 and includes 4 photos and then to buy the CD with all the pics it's £15. Now I've just got to keep my fingers crossed that my ex doesn't let me down cos he's hungover

Beccabump · 05/05/2009 18:55

Am fed-up! Had a phone call from my mw today and although the results of my GTT 2 weeks ago were fine when they were on the screen at the GP's (damn male doctors!) now the paper results have come through and I am above the borderline for a GD query and have to go to the hospital next week to see a dietician, consultant, have a possible growth scan and bloods

It is so annoying as I know it could really impact on my homebirth and the last thing I wanted with this pregnancy was to have to deliver in hospital. DH doesn't drive, the hospital is an hour away, no idea how he would get there and back with DD.

Just can't think positive at the moment - any advice?

chellebelle · 05/05/2009 21:29

Becca you really need to look into what effect GD has. I refused a GTT on the basis that the results probably would change anything. I said I was going ahead with a homebirth whatever the results and so it really wasn't worth it. The midwife was quite happy with that and added me to the homebirth register no questions asked. Admittedly I have had a big baby before with minimal damage and have also had 2 homebirths before so I know what is coming but I have to say that if you know what you're doing and you are aware of the consequences they really can't refuse you a homebirth either way. Don't get me wrong, I'm not championing homebirths at all costs, you have to weigh up for yourself what the consequences are and if the risks outweigh the benefits then would always say hospital birth but I also think that you have a right to give birth wherever you want to whether that be hospital or home. Something that has struck me as odd on this thread is the amount of people that are being sent for GTTs. It really does seem to be the 'in thing' at the moment with the medical bods. hth

chellebelle · 05/05/2009 21:30

sorry - really should check before I post - that should be *probably wouldn't change anything"

ilikeyoursleeves · 05/05/2009 21:34

Hi all, our scan went really well, baby is already around 3lb (I'm 28+4 weeks) and it's a BOY!!!!! I thought it would be a boy as this is the exact same pregnancy that I had with DS and I always seem to think I'm carrying DS again LOL! So we are very happy, although TBH there is a small part of me that is a little sad that I won't be able to indulge in pretty girly clothes and toys, and I feel bad for thinking that (is that awful?). I love my DS so much though and he is the most perfect placid wee boy so I think little boys are adorable. They will hopefully grow to be great pals and DH is already looking forward to boys camping trips ) We are pretty much sorted for clothes although will need some summer stuff as DS was a winter baby. Oh dear, I might just have to go shopping!

I have another scan in 6 weeks time so they can see how baby is growing and to see what to do re birthing options.

Congrats hobnob too on your scan! And I'm so sorry to read about your friends friend ruby, that's just something I can't even bear to think about.

Re breastpads I'm looking to get washable ones this time too, I spent a small fortune on disposables last time! What ones are best?

QueenFee · 05/05/2009 21:48

I used the avent washable ones which have lace on the outside (great because you can feel which way round to put on in the dark) they were also really soft and fit really well for me.

oh and btw (to make you all ) I am off to the races on thursday. Shame I can't wear any particularly lovely outfits but it will be fun all the same. I have never been before so any advice gladly appreciated. Need to buy tights which I hate - can anyone recommend any really comfy ones?

Gillyan · 05/05/2009 23:51

lydia That sucks that they didn't scan you, so daft as you were there, why couldn't they just do it?! Try not to worry, they could have it totally wrong anyway about him being a big boy.

ruby so sorry about your friend. I am terrified of stillbirths. When I had DD all panic ensued and they were screaming at me to get her out as her heart rate was dipping, when she was born she was black and needed help breathing. When I delivered the placenta there was an enormous 'true knot' in the cord. It was bigger than her head and as she was coming down the birth canal she had been cutting herself off from the oxygen supply. The MW held the knot up to show me and said 'see how thick the cord is? Well thats just saved your babies life' Apparantly the cord being unusually long ( was wrapped round her neck twice too )and very thick stopped too much oxygen/blood being cut off from her. A couple of MW's insensitively told me after that most babies are born dead like that!!!!!!!!! Just yet one of the other horrors that haunts me now. The knot is rare and only happens in 1% of PG's but does increase the risk of stillbirth. Scary stuff and there is nothing I could of done about it.

hobnob Fantastic news, so so glad things are going well for you. Whats your due date??? xx

becca sorry you're feeling helpless (hugs)

ILYSleeves CONGRATS on your baby boy, thats great. Don't feel bad for dreaming of the pink outfits, I'm sure it's totally normal for a woman to want a girl. I secretly hoped mune was another girl and I am glad she is, but I do wonder if I'll start brooding for a boy next!

I listened to my hypno birthing CD today on my I-pod, I litened to quite a bit but fell asleep...for 3hours!!!!

Sorted the nursery out yesterday and put the cot up and sorted all the bits out. Getting excited now.

JetLi · 06/05/2009 03:04

Wretched heartburn - hence stupid-o'clock posting. Waiting for the bloody Gaviscon to kick in.
So sorry about your friend's friend ruby, what a truly awful thing to have happen. Why is it that the stillbirth rates are so high in this country? And your friend too hunny - it just doesn't bear thinking about does it. Those poor families.
Great news from hobnob though!
Becca I'm with chellebelle on all this GTT stuff after my brush with it. I seems like a real "flavour of the month" thing for the medical profession to brandish about and scare women and an excuse to medicalise pregnancy and giving birth a bit more than they already do. And GD doesn't seem to increase the stillbirth risks when you read their evidence. I posted the GD NICE guidelines for Phoenix a few days ago if you wanted to have a read. Apparently the sizing scans are notoriously inaccurate so it may be wise to take anything they say to you with a pinch of salt on that front. There are some GD support good threads knocking around too. All that said, I'll totally contradict myself now and admit I'm going for a full blown consultant-led hospital birth - my SIL had her 2 at home and had the most amazing experiences both times, but after it taking 5 years for us to get pregnant I want there to be as much kit around as possible should any intervention be needed for us, because if I'm honest none of this pregnancy and impending motherhood seems to be very real yet. I still want as active a birth as possible, and I'm crapping myself at the thought of MRSA, C-Diff and all that hospital-related nonsense. And Gillyan a part of me does envy your c-section I admit it. A couple of friends have had planned CS's because of breech babies and had very positive experiences. In an ideal world I'd like my baby out as quickly and safely as possible so we can hold it - then it will seem like it is really happening for us.
And a baby boy for Ilikeyoursleeves! Aww it'll be fab. I have 2 nephews and I love them to bits. I won't put you off with tales of their camping trips last year, but suffice to say at least one involves a duck pond. The beastly brothers are 3 and 7 and are like a bloody whirlwind, but such good fun. Ma JetLi does keep saying "Think Pink" to me over and over again though - I think because they wear her out!!
Christiana my HIP went off 31st March and I got paid 1st May so reckon on about 4 to 5 weeks for yours I guess.
Evie - a scary bank holiday for you then! Hope you're OK now?
lollipop Slings - I'm still undecided too. Picked up a Peanut Shell pouch but can't decide beyond that. At only a smidge over 5 foot and with quite a pre-pregnancy bosom, my vanity is kicking in and I'm wondering if I won't look like a house side with 4 or 5 metres of cloth wrapped around me, plus a baby, plus norks the size of watermelons!! There are no signs of a sling meet locally so I'm going to resort to accosting people in the street when I see something that looks like it could be for me - I honestly can't think of what else to do now, because £40 or £50 spent on something which turns out to be unsuitable seems like such a costly mistake to make.

JetLi · 06/05/2009 03:13

Bummer. Was hoping there might be a "Think I'm in labour - hold my hand" thread running to keep me occupied, but no such luck! Just more stuff about pig flu.
Ah well. Off to buy tat on eBay then

thelollipoplady · 06/05/2009 07:41

hope your heartburn's better this am jetli, i had lots with my dds and none this time (boy) so perhaps you are having a girl! on the subject of slings, I started a thread off in pregnancy and people have been posting links to different websites. might be worth a look - cos i haven't seen anyone with a sling where i am.

BonzoDoodah · 06/05/2009 11:32

Jetli my heartburn has been horrendous - I've been swigging Gaviscon like vodka . I went to the Docs yesterday and have been prescribed Ranitidine ... it really helps! May be worth a try for you.

Beccabump don't stress too much ... ho[pefully you can try controlling it by diet - especially if you are only borderline. Then the homebirth should still be no problem.

hobnob - wonderful news! So exciting!

hunny can you tell me where you've booked your 4D scan as that seems incredibly cheap. I want to book one and am in south manchester so yours may be close enough for me to use.

xxhunnyxx · 06/05/2009 13:23

bonzo it's through Inner Vision 3D, their tel number is 0870 766 1577. They do sessions at a few different locations, the one I'm going to is in Leigh.
There's also a company in Liverpool called Before the Stalk which do them for £60, their number is 0151 2800543.

Ilikeyoursleeves great news on the scan! Don't feel bad for feeling a little bit disappointed, of course all women want to go out and buy pretty pink dresses, if I was having a girl she'd already have a full wardrobe for the first 18 months of her life by now! I felt exactly the same when we found out we are having a boy, part of me was over the moon but there was a little part of me that was a bit disappointed but now that I've got used to it I wouldn't change him for the world and would probably be a little bit disappointed if he turns out to be a girl at the birth!

krumbockmummy · 06/05/2009 13:50

Hi is any one else missing there feet havnt seen mine in mths?

fingers are still crossed for a natural birth but have to have another consult with doc end of june, and scan to see if baby is in right position for birth.

Gillyan- i have my GTT test 2omz, got family history of type 2.

Also just got an invite to my cuz wedding on the 25th july, due 27th so will be crossing my legs or dealing with a very new new born.

Hope everyone is doing well xx

Mij · 06/05/2009 14:52

Hi all

With you on the heartburn. Even Gaviscon advance is losing its efficacy.

slings Lollipop personally, if you like the idea of a stretchy wrap, I'd go for a Kari-me. Having said that, if you all fall in love with slinging, chances are you'd need to swap to a woven wrap once your babe gets too big for carrying on your chest (for longer walks, anyway). There is an awful lot of stuff on t'internet about slings, but it's horses for courses when it comes to choosing your type. QueenFee has obviously found her thing in ring slings/pouches (btw can highly recommend Hotslings, but then you'll probably make your own ) but I never really got on with them - one shoulder carries weren't good for more than 20 minutes or so for me, although very useful for 'quick nips' - and I never had any bother feeding in a wrap, so if there's any way you can road test by borrowing or hiring, it's worth it to find what suits you best. Oh, and DD hated being carried lying down so I was glad I had a wrap so she could be in the 'splatted frog' carry, upright on my front!

breastpads I used washable ones from Lollipop, and yeah, they're not very flattering inside tight tops but I found them a lot less itchy than disposables - again, different things suit different people. If you do get disposables its worth spending a bit extra - the cheapo ones just bunched up into little wads, which looked very odd! I also used lilypadz after the leakiness had calmed down, if I wanted to look sleek in a tight top, but they're not great for hot sweaty weather .

home birth started a thread that's gone mad - more advice than I know what to do with. Seems I need a lot of (red) towels and (red) dust sheets with plastic backing, and a whole supermarket-worth of snacks!

thelollipoplady · 06/05/2009 21:33

thanks mij. knew you'd be along with some sling-wisdom! question - is there any difference between the kari-me slings and the moby one?

QueenFee · 06/05/2009 22:57

I went down the second hand route for slings because they are better already worn in apparenlty. This means I have spent less than £20 on slings and have a wrap and ring sling so I can experiment TKMaxx often have peanut shell etc half price in so worth a look. From what I can gather if you are going for a wrap a stretchy one is easier to learn with.

heartburn Its driving me crazy DH had a clear out the other night and put my Gaviscon in the medicine cabinet upstairs (as opposed to the kitchen cupboard) you should have seen the hormonal hissy fit I threw!

Got myself a lovely dress for the races tomoorw for a bargain £7 will try and post a pic when I finally get all dressed up.

JetLi · 07/05/2009 09:29

Have a lovely time at the races Queenfee! The weather looks like it will be kind to you.
Off to the seaside for the weekend - can't wait. I'm hoping that fish and chips isn't too heartburn-inducing
Seeing the mad-wife this afternoon. Will chat to her about the heartburn and see what she can recommend - I do like the idea of Ranitidine bonzo - it would be nice to take one tablet and then just forget about it for the rest of the day.
Was beginning to ponder whether I needed to buy some kind of waterproof sheet for the bed for later in pregnancy - in case my waters went in the night. Or even thought of chucking a shower curtain over the bed, under the bottom sheet - just something to protect the mattress. Did anyone bother first time around?
Thanks

BonzoDoodah · 07/05/2009 11:29

hunny thanks for the numbers!

Jetli I didn't even think of saving the bed with waters breaking. First time round they went a tiny bit (about an egg-cup full) and we went off to hospital. When we arrived they started going properly and not to be too graphic but there was masses!!! More than a pint - was everywhere - glad it was on their floor and not mine.

Loving this Ranitidine .... not had Gaviscon for 2 days!!! Amazing - usually swigging it from the bottle every couple of hours.
