phoenix tell us how it goes. Fingers crossed for you but don't worry too much - my SIL was diagnosed with gestational diabetes but completely controlled it with diet. So there is that possibility.

I'm waiting for my results - forgot to ask when they'd be available! Durr!

Hope Plot2 is okay too - that's some of the trouble with anonnimity isn't it - can't phone for a chat to see how people are.

I didn't know that hardening was Braxton Hicks either (and this is my 2nd)! I thought it was supposed to hurt and mine never did/have.

Phoenix · 30/04/2009 10:01

Thanks ladies, i'm going to work after the hospital so i'll try and get on the computer and let you know how it goes.

Glad i'm not the only one on my second baby who didn't know the hard bump were braxton hicks . I really can't remember them with ds.

Bonzo - My hospital said they would only ring if they had found something wrong (which they did.) The results were back on the same day at around 5pm.

OP posts:
Lillabet · 30/04/2009 13:46

Hope it all went well Phoenix
I won't get my GTT results back until my next MW appt. which isn't until a week Monday! The only reason I had to have one is because my BMI was, only just, higher than it should have been at booking in. I am very much of the opinion that making a woman who is 28 weeks pregnant fast for 12 hrs, drink glucose drink and fast for a further 2 hrs is cruel and unusual (and against the Geneva convention ).

Quick question: what do you think about using a gym/birthing ball for exercise/helping during labour?
I am considering using one to keep my fitness levels up and one of the (many) MWs I saw suggested it would be good for my lower back.
Do I bother forking out for an "official" birthing ball or do I buy a gym ball from the supermarket?

Phoenix · 30/04/2009 15:26

Hospital went ok. I've got a finger prick machine to test my blood 1 hour after 1 meal a day and keep a record of it and i'll go back to ante natal clinic in 2wks (should be next week but we're going away mon-fri) to see how i'm doing. I've got a few leaflets and a food sheet to read through.

OP posts:
chellebelle · 30/04/2009 16:01

Lillabet I had a gym ball which I borrowed from a friend [super scrooge smiley ] for my last 2 labours and births and for the preceeding weeks. It was great for sitting on while watching telly to 'bounce' baby into the right position and was good pain relief for labour too - kind of sat on it rolling my hips round. Definitely worth having one in my opinion. Hospitals tend to have them too so you shouldn't need to take one with you if you're having a hospital birth. Definitely not worth paying for a birthing ball though. The gym ones are exactly the same and far far cheaper!!!

JetLi · 30/04/2009 16:32

Hi Phoenix - in my panic a couple of weeks ago, I had done some preparatory poking around about GD and diet and stuff. Burgen Soya and Linseed sliced bread is meant to be the lowest GI and also All Bran is the lowest in the cereals (but not Bran Flakes). But that was about as far as I got, other than that baked spuds are meant to be quite wicked for the old blood sugar and so are rice cakes. Have you tried one of your tests yet?

Phoenix · 30/04/2009 16:59

No i haven't done a test yet because the machine only has 10 test sticks in and i stupidly forgot that we go away on Monday til Friday so i won't be able to pick up my prescription from the docs for some more til either next Fri or the Monday after. So if i start tomorrow after my brekkie they will last til Sunday

I'll find not drinking coke the hardest i think

OP posts:
JetLi · 30/04/2009 17:13

Not drinking coke wouldn't be so bad if we could drink lager!!
[Oh how I miss beer/wine/gin/cider/Drambuie/lager/Limoncello/sitting oustide pubs in the sunshine/Silk Cut....]
Oh well, it'll be well worth it in the end

Phoenix · 30/04/2009 17:33

Ha ha yes, i think they should allow us to take a lager into the hospital for after the birth

OP posts:
QueenFee · 30/04/2009 19:44

I also borrowed a gym ball from my sister - it's been used for 5 births now! I find it good for SPD too as sitting on it dosn't ut so much pressure on IYSWIM.

Picked up a lovely scarf (Large square cotton/silky type) in the charity shop for a bargain £2.50 so my project tonight is to make it into a baby sling - maybe i'm being a little optimistic!

My Asda delivery has just arrived so have to drag my sorry body now and put it all away

lydiathetattooedlady · 30/04/2009 19:51

hi everyone, havent been able to get on here for ages as dp managed to blow the computer up IDIOT does he not know i cannot survive without it! anyway i havent been able to catch up on all posts and i only have about 40 min on here (am at my dads house) I had 28 week appointment on tues, was 29 weeks yesterday but when they measured me i was measuring 35/36 weeks. have to have GTT test tomorrow morning and then consultation and scan on tues. i never had any problems in previous pregnancy and dd was only 6 13 when born, anyonw any ideas about from GD this could be im so panicked! sorry for not being able to respond to anyone elses post time is precious! off to post this on pregnancy topic too! be graetful for any imput/ advice!

Patchybob · 30/04/2009 20:01

lydia Phoenix is the one to talk to having just been through it herself. you will get the results of gtt back really quickly and hopefully it will give you some answers. Hope you are ok, try not to panic x

QueenFee I went to pilates last night and sat on a gym ball there. Loved it. Will try and get hold of one as it would be good to also help the spd.

I saw my midwife today and came out all anxious, don't know why really but just didn't feel as positive. Tried to speak to her about the birth and possible c section, but she had a student with her and I think was trying to show off to her in a way. She did everything in her power to put me off, but I suppose she would would't she.

Also the babys heart rate was 126. Its always 160 ish and I didn't get a chance to ask her if that is ok to have such a huge difference. Does it change all the time? Any ideas?

Anyway, DH off to the pub tonight so I am going to chill in front of the telly with chocolate! x

ilikeyoursleeves · 30/04/2009 21:08

Hope all goes well with those having GTT tests, TBH I haven't a clue about all that so can't really offer any advice other than good luck.

Just wanted to tell you that DS became a big cousin today as SIL had a baby boy this morning and OMG guess what the weight was???

11lb 6oz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fronkin 'ell that's all I can say! Natural delivery and no drugs either!!!!

Gillyan · 01/05/2009 00:01

OMFG!!!!! 11lb 6oz - poor woman and what a star!

lydia and phoenix no advice sorry on the GTT but hope you're both ok

I got my HP Grant today!!!! Didn't get a letter or anything, I was just checking my account on line and saw it. Quite impressed as sent it off 5 wks ago and I'm 30 wks PG today. TBH I've never had any trouble with HMRC or Tax credits ( same people ??) I know loads of people have difficulties with tax creds and this grant but I am a licky one and must just be in the right area or something. Grant came at right time as me and DP are going to Hanley on Sat to get ALL the last bit's for baby. We'd budgetted some money but having the £190 will be great now!

My friend came round today who is 36 wks and she is so uncomfortable...as I am starting to get. I know it's not long now but I am starting to get a little fed up.

I went to bed at 1am and woke up every hr tossing and turning cos of hip ache, then I finally gave up and got up a 6am. Sat up reading till 7am when DD woke up. Went and had my cornflakes then threw up all over myself and clean on clothes and bathroom floor etc. Great. Sorted myself out and had my brew then 5 mins later threw that up. Been half dead all day and had the runs too! Hope I haven't got swine flu

Drying and straightening my hair this evening made my bump ache across the top and I remembered that I used to let my hair dry on it's own last time when I was about 35ks onwards, just couldn't be arsed.

Hope you are all okay

soozze · 01/05/2009 00:58

patchybob - I think the heart rate does slow down the further along we get.

11lb 6, wow !!
my dp weighed 10lbs when born and my dad 12lbs, it used to really worry me in my first pregancy! My ds was 'only' 8lb 10 in the end.

Gillyan - Glad to hear the grant came through, i've seen the thread where loads are still waiting to hear. Have fun spending it

JetLi · 01/05/2009 08:47

Well bugger me! Saw Gillyan's post and thought I'd check my bank account - lo and behold the £190 has been paid in overnight!
Hmmmm what to spend it on.... Red wine and smelly cheese is at the top of the list
Every time I start panicking about the birth, "red wine and smelly cheese" is my new mantra. All close family and DP are under strict instructions to smuggle both into the hospital

Lydia - I had to have GCT cos I'm borderline on the BMI and there is diabetes on my side of the family (albeit not first degree relatives yet - the next generation away). I failed the GCT so then had to have the GTT which is the full on 2 hours fasting one. I think I passed the GTT because I've heard nothing back in over 2 weeks from the hosp. and they said no news is good news. They combined the GTT with my 28 week bloods. I think the criteria for needing the GCT/GTT is BMI, first degree relative with diabetes, previous macrocosmic baby, previous history of GD, unexplained still birth and there are probably a few others.

I think maybe they're doing it since you're measuring further along for your dates?

Gillyan · 01/05/2009 10:19

jetli thats ace! happy spending!

EvieBear · 01/05/2009 11:23

ilike whoa what a weight- that terrifies me... well done to your sil!

hip just checked my account and i have been paid too, happy days

what a gorgeous day today... have my aunt and cousin coming to stay for the weekend so hope weather holds out.

have been getting period like pains and am feeling totally shattered with the tiniest thing i do, haven't had that up till now, even in the first trimester so i think it's all starting to hit home now. will be 31 weeks on monday. think on the list i am down as due the 7th july but it's actually 6th july, i never bothered to update phoenix as it's not a huge difference.

i have 6 babygros, 3 vests and a cot. that's me so far. better get cracking with the other necessities now. still so confused re breastpump as they are so expensive!!!! £80 or so for that medela swing pump. there's another medela electric for around £42 would that be as good?

hope you are all well and looking fwd to bank hol wknd!

Mij · 01/05/2009 11:41

Got feet in my ribs and had horrendous cramp down one side of my shin this morning - had to yell for DP to come and force my foot into a weird position to stretch it out again. Poor bloke, couldn't get the right position so ended up yelling even more!

lydia sorry to hear about the GTT - hope all goes well.

birthing balls there is no difference between a birthing ball and an exercise/physio ball. They all have to be anti-burst these days (now you really wouldn't want to be dumped unceremoniously on your arse in the middle of a contraction, would you ), but do buy from a reputable supplier, in the UK, to make sure it conforms to safety standards. I used to be a fitness instructor and used physio balls for pilates and resistance work, also use one at work after some twonk drove into me and gave me whiplash, and sat/leaned on mine through most of my first labour. Get one. It's also very useful for bouncing a restless newborn while watching telling so you don't have to walk miles in the pissing rain or the early hours of the morning!

Can you tell I'm a fan ?

Have just discovered I can get Gaviscon free, and without prescription, via the minor ailments scheme at the pharmacy, with my maternity exemption certificate. And they gave me the advance one. Result!

Grant realised I didn't get a form at my 28wk check. Arse. Can you apply any other way, like online? My surgery is generally efficient but they're in chaos right now as switching computer system, and the midwives are all over the place.

Cheekycel · 01/05/2009 12:17

mij as i dont qualify for HIP i havent sent off my form. Could post it to you if you like and then you can get midwife to sign? email me at [email protected] if you're interested.

no internet at home at the mo, so catching up on all the posts quickly.

Have a fab weekend everyone

I went to see SIL and her whopper baby today at the hospital and he is so lovely and soft and cute! He does look big but then not as big as I thought he would look given his weight (my DS was half that weight!). He is straight into 0-3month clothes, newborn are too small! For those worried about the birth (me included), she gave birth in the birthing pool, just gas and air and has no stitches as she just got 'a graze'!!! Hopefully it will be that easy for all of us (mind you, it was her 3rd baby so she's probably a bit stretched LOL).

at all you having great weather- it's been raining here all day, poo. Have a great weekend all!

lydiathetattooedlady · 01/05/2009 21:39

hi, had GTT test today, wont get the results til next week. midwife did say i could just be carrying a lot of waters but will get a better idea of whats going on when i have the scan on tuesday! been having tightenings all day since which i presume is the sugar, midwife said it was the equivalent of eating 24 spoons of sugar...yum yum!
have decided to get my bum in to gear with regards to buying baby stuff and have just done a huge order from mothercare. i had a 10% off voucher code which saved us some pennies!
weather wise, it started off miserable today but got lovely this afternoon.
just off to research what sling i want moby or kari me.
was going to ask, we have a big rear facing britax seat we were going to use for baby as its nice and sturdy, but given that maybe once/twice a week i may be out with family, to get a small rear facing only car seat. since it'll be rarely used is it worth spending £115 on a maxi one or would mothercares own brand at less than half the price do? i wont be using it as a travel system!
just read 11lb 6oz wow, i hope i do as well and only come away with a graze, im terrified this baby may now be 15lb!

Hi all!

Has anyone already been to one of the baby shows? I'm thinking of going to the NEC Birmingham Baby Show - is it worth going to one, do they have stuff on offer there? We would have to drive from London...
