I have gone with Sorky's idea!!!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
glaskham · 22/04/2009 10:36

Kayz- they learn to sleep through a cry during the night pretty fast when they know they dont have to get up!! DH sleeps through most of ruby's night-time antics!! and she's waking every couple of hours at least through the last week or so!!

Ruby was weighed this morning and has put on 5.5oz in the last 5 days!! wuhoo!! so she's now 5lb 4.5oz!!!! she's finally getting bigger!! My supply went up a bit overnight as ruby fed every 20-30min yesterday evening, then she had the bottle of formula at 7.30-8ish and i expressed, and then she woke at 10pm for a breastfeed, then slept until 2am, but woke every 1-1.5hrs in the night for feeds, but was much more satisfied with what she was getting from me, and seems to be the same this morning which is a good sign.

I have my new sling arriving tomorrow hopefully, and also my herbal stuff... so hopefully by this time next week she'll be back on track... told the nurse today that i'm only going to give the formula until my supply is back up then am going to stop it. So hopefully when she comes next weds i can stop the bottlefeeds!! wuhoo!!!- I'm feeling more positive now, especially as she's gained so much weight even though my supply has been low.

sorkycakey · 22/04/2009 10:38

Aw Gruff it's sounds like you've had a horrid time

glaskham · 22/04/2009 10:45

Gruff- i'll let you know how i get on with the fenugreek that kayz reccomended... i got about 2 weeks worth of capsules for £6.95 inc postage from vortexhealth i'd also reccomend lots of skin to skin contact too... do you know about kangaroo care? I did it while Ruby was in SCBU when my milk had dried up after the birth etc and my supply starting coming thick and fast after that... i did lots yesterday and my supply has increased overnight... and as you've probably already been told express every 3hrs to give your breasts regular stimulation for milk... sounds like you're doing really well though!!

SesIsCountingdowntheweeks · 22/04/2009 10:46

Glask - that is really good news Well done you and Ruby! Can I ask where you ordered your funugreek from as I want to try and get some too as having an underactive thyroid can affect milk supply.

Gruff - poor little Gruff cub but he seems to be doing so well now. Sounds like you are doing exactly the right thing.

SesIsCountingdowntheweeks · 22/04/2009 10:47

Glask - you've gone and answered me before you saw my question! Thanks

glaskham · 22/04/2009 10:50

Happy to help ses- i first went on holland and barrats to order it but they were out of stock, so i searched for it and found that website and its £1 cheaper with free postage too, and the tablets are exactly the same!! One of my friends is going to be getting some too as she had very little milk with her DD, and gave up by 4 weeks old.

sorkycakey · 22/04/2009 10:50

You go Glask! I bet the waking night feeds will do the business

Kayz I asked someone I know who is BF counsellor about relactation etc and they said it's weeks before the supply starts!! It can't tae that long, surely?!?
Apparently there is a drug she said called Domperidome (?sp) which brings it in fast, that adoptive mothers use. Might be an easier way to do it, maybe the GP can prescribe it?
Does ds2 still have his latch?

Tell your DH to shut up, he won't be feeding him, grrr.

GruffaloSoldier · 22/04/2009 10:52

thanks for the advice Glask! i will def look at trying fenugreek and will google kangaroo care! my milk supply is def on increase which is so rewarding, have been doing 3 hrly expressions since monday so i think its going quite well now. think having mum here who bf me for 14 mths is a godsend as she has helped with latch and position. hope yours sorts itself soon

just getting it off my chest (excuse the pun) has made me feel better already!

Kayzr · 22/04/2009 10:56

Sorky, I've been told that domperidome isn't licensed for us here for improving milk supply so it is up to your gp if they give it to you or not.

glaskham · 22/04/2009 10:58

Kangaroo care is skin to skin with baby on your chest, on his front, put him between your breasts if they are big enough (mine sag under my arms so leave plenty of room for my 5lb-er!! haha) or on your chest and have some time alone with the peace and quiet to enjoy your baby!!

Do you have an electric pump or a manual hand pump? i found a hand pump was much much slower than an electric one... but they are very expencive- is there any way of loaning one from the hospital? Thats what i've been able to do, but dont know if thats just because she was on SCBU that i can have one.

glaskham · 22/04/2009 11:01

Oh Kayz- i was told about maxolon (which is what i was first given in syrup form for my morning sickness) or otherwise known as domperidome can be prescribed by the GP, but she said that some general GP's wont prescribe it, but if you can get onto someone from the breastfeeding network they ahve their own doctors who will prescribe it as i was told i could get it if i wanted some...

tinkhaseatentoomanyeastereggs · 22/04/2009 11:04

glas - that is gr8 news about ruby ur r both doing great

lb - sorry for bad night

cosmo - a routine will develop it is common for them to be unsettled @ this stage

ses- glad u had chat with dh and things getting back on track

gruff - sounds like u r doing great

SesIsCountingdowntheweeks · 22/04/2009 11:05

I've seen domperidone mentioned a few times with regard to milk supply on MN but never come across it in practice. Have done a bit of research and found:

  • It's not licensed for use in increasing milk supply as the manufacturers have done no official tests on this. Your GP would therefore be taking all risk on his/her shoulders and therefore may not be happy to prescribe it.

Domperidone works particularly well to increase milk production under the following circumstances:

  • It's been found that a mother who is pumping milk for a sick or premature baby in hospital has a decrease in the amount she pumps around four or five weeks after the baby is born. Domperidone generally brings the amount of milk pumped back to where it was or even to higher levels.

Domperidone still works, but often less dramatically when:

? The mother is pumping for a sick or premature baby but has not managed to develop a full milk supply.

? The mother is trying to develop a full milk supply while nursing an adopted baby.

? The mother is trying to wean the baby from supplements.

It is sometimes used off licence in Canada where the dose is domperidone at 30 mg (three 10 mg tablets) 3 times a day. Most mothers take the domperidone for 3 to 8 weeks, but sometimes it is needed longer than that, and sometimes it is impossible for mothers to maintain their milk supply without staying on domperidone. Mothers who are nursing adopted babies may have to take the drug much longer.

As with all medication, domperidone can havfe side effects. However it is probably one of the safest drugs around with a v low incidence of side effects.

Don't know if that helps....

tinkhaseatentoomanyeastereggs · 22/04/2009 11:06

Moosy · 22/04/2009 11:08

Morning all, sorry to hear about difficulties with feeding. I expressed a lot with DD2 and bought a medela electric pump off ebay for about £25 so not too expensive and it was really good, well worth the money! They sell on well too, I think I got £20 back for mine when I'd finished with it.

Sorry for rubbish post and no catch up, I feel crappy and have no energy for typing!

SesIsCountingdowntheweeks · 22/04/2009 11:09

x-posted with loads of you!

Maxolon is similar to domperidone but not the same and has more side effects. Domperidone is available to buy from pharmacies for stomach disorders as Motilium 10. They only come in packs of 10 tablets though and cost about £3.65 so when taking 3 a day can get a bit expensive...

Personally I think I'd leave it until after trying the fenugreek.

glaskham · 22/04/2009 11:12

Right i'm off for now... Ruby is stirring for a feed and got to collect DS from nursery soon. Think i'm gonna do naps today so i can have some rest again now ruby is more settled- she's almost back to her normal self- not screaming like she was the last few days!!! have my little angel back!!

gruff- glad all well with mw

lastboxoftampons · 22/04/2009 15:27

Hello everyone

Glask, glad to hear that Ruby is putting on weight and your supply is increasing! Great news!

Wow, it sure is helpful to have our very own pharmacist on her, isn't it?

Gruff, wow, what a story! So glad it's all in the past now and the Gruff cub is here!

Cosmo - yay for first outing! Sounds like a success!

Managed to get nearly everything sorted out at the GP this morning - my letter for travel, my blood test appointment made for 28 weeks and my MatB1 form - and still managed to be on a 10 o'clock train. Needless to say the GP was NOT impressed with the midwife! She actually said Why couldn't the midwife do the letter for you? The mw told me the GP had to, but frankly, it makes a lot of sense for the mw to do it as she's meant to be more up to date on my particular situation. Anyway, only problem now is, I was given the form for the Healthy in Pregnancy grant by the mw on Monday and I just took it out to fill out on the train on the way to work from the GP and I noticed that either the doctor or the mw needs to sign it. So I'm just going to wait until I'm there next to do it.

Moosy · 22/04/2009 15:40

There must be something about midwives, I've just been for my booking in appointment and she didn't show up! Receptionist rang her after 20 minutes and she said she'd be another 10 minutes so I left. She's going to ring to arrange to see me at home tomorrow or friday.

Glad you got yours (mostly) sorted though LBOT

Moosy · 22/04/2009 15:40

Oh yes, and stop ganging up on me on fB You know who you are [stern stare]

SesIsCountingdowntheweeks · 22/04/2009 16:12

Just back from a v successful trip into town

Cleared out my car this morning and parked it in one of the valet bays. It probably hadn't been cleaned inside or out for about 6 months Seeing as I was using it so much for work, it was pretty gross and they've done a good thorough job on it. Think it won't present a health risk for the baby now!

Managed to get a cheap £4 t-shirt (long length) as I'm getting fed up with my limited wardrobe.
Holland & Barrett had some fenugreek so I got that too!
Mothercare had a baby bath on display with a stand. I've been wondering about a stand for the bath. (Know it's not essential but was just wondering...) The stand was the last one and she gave me 25% off as it was a display model!
Only thing I didn't get was some sandals. With swelling feet, I wanted to get some cheap sandals. I thought a larger size than normal would do. It seems not as my problem is on top of my feet so I think I'll resort to my beach ones I already have with velcro going across them. My feet are starting to look quite silly as I have quite small feet for someone who's nearly 5'7" and a size 14 - size 4 feet! They are now a v puffy size 4!!

Anyway, ramble, ramble, ramble

LBOT - glad your GP was at least a bit helpful and understanding but can't believe they've still not signed your HIP form!!!

Moos - hope you're not feeling too awful and at MW not turning up at all!!!???

tink - hope DD1 enjoyed nursery

tinkisenjoyingthesun · 22/04/2009 17:14

sounds like mws r

sounds like you are getting very organize

dd1 did great @ nursery and did really well with lunch

GYo · 22/04/2009 20:22

Evening all - please note that Im posting in waking hours rather during the night feeds!

We've had a much better day today

After yesterday's osteo treatement we had a good night and the small giraffe woke up with her head facing the other way for the first time ever, so im hoping that the osteo has helped her out. We then went to nursery rhyme singing at the libary with my NCT friends. Then we had coffee, then we went for lunch! We sat outside and it was fab! SG was a bit upset but did ok and eventually went to sleep in pram, which is unheard of during the day!

Tonight, DH is late so I've put DD to bed at 7 and she hasnt woken up again (she usually wakes up 20mins after going down weirdly). So I've done myself a nice healthy dinner and ate it in peace!

Im now sipping a jack daniels and coke (really missed that when I was pregnant).

Dont care if she wakes up now, I've eaten and had chance to relax!

Right- sorry for me me me post- I just had to share the joy after yesterdays day of me crying as much as DD

Cosmo- glad to hear you are doing ok sounds like your DD is too..surrender to not getting anything done, it makes life much easier. I am pleased if I can even take plate through the kitchen after lunch these days!

Gruff- wow, your birth story hints there sound like it was a hard time for you and the small cub... looking fwd to reading the full version when you have time. Thinking of you, glad you are getting out already.

Moosy- sorry for crap MW, hope she turns up for home visit. I much prefer that myself anyway... feels less rushed at home.

Glask- glad you are ok and DD is doing well. Hope you can sort out the feeding formula and get back to BF.

KAyz- bugger re row about relactation. Surely its your decision?... dont think DHs/DPs realise how emotive the whole BFing thing is for us...

LBOT- glad you are sorted, have a fab holiday!

Mind has gone blank- sorry for everyone i've missed.

No doubt I will be online again later during the night feeds...
