Boff - DS flying the nest had me in stitches. He sounds so adorable.

Frekkles - Sorry you were feeling crap. I hope you are better today?

Mumble - Congrats to DS.
Do you get a discount in Currys if that happens?

Schulte - Glad to hear DD is on the mend.
And why is it that men flat refuse to read instructions?

Jbakedbean - Welcome to the gang.

Loving the Grand National commentary, I almost wet myself.

PuzzleRocks 300 - 1 outsider (hasn't been ridden enough lately)

BoffinMum · 15/03/2009 09:47

More thoughts from da Boff on bf.

I think you have to give it 6 weeks (possibly with support from a NCT bf consultant or similar) before really knowing whether it's for you, as everyone (including me who has bf multiple children) takes that long to settle into it ...

BUT

... miserable mummies make miserable babies so as BB says, this is what 24 hours Tescos are there for if you are going bonkers.

PuzzleRocks · 15/03/2009 09:49

Brettgirl - I see others have already answered the important stuff. I just wanted to add that I was really small chested before I had DD and had absolutely no leakage at all either. And yet she latched with no problems and gained weight well from day one.

bronze · 15/03/2009 09:51

morning

Juwesm · 15/03/2009 09:54

Brettgirl - Just a quick one re: the omeprazole. Limited information yes, but known to pass into breast milk. However, it can be used in very small babies to treat reflux, i.e. even if tiny amounts pass to LO in your milk, it is something that can be given safely to infants.

I have been generally freaked out about the breastfeeding thing all along. For several years I've had a recurring dream about breast feeding (and forgetting to feed baby altogether!) which always leaves me feeling very strange about it. Most recently (very oddly) I was breastfeeding a cat! Who knows what that says about me! And I've got a pump for expressing, but that really does scare the heebyjeebies out of me. I'm hoping that when LO turns up, it will all seem perfectly normal!

Also, someone on here mentioned fennel tea for perking up your milk production.

PuzzleRocks · 15/03/2009 10:08

Morning Bronze.

Ju - TBH it felt very odd the first tme. I did feel slghtly uncomfortable but that feeling had completely gone by the second attempt. It's quite normal to feel a bit strange doing anything that is new to you.

bronze · 15/03/2009 10:10

I'm going to be a nonstarter.

Fennel tea and fenugreek for milk supply, plus chocolate (fact. its got loads of things you need for producing milk) lots of water and if all else fails I also took a presciption drug called domperidone. I don't know if they'll give this in normal situations but worth a thought BUT
who says you won't produce milk anyway

brettgirl2 · 15/03/2009 10:28

Wow, thanks everyone. I had a good look at the first website that Boffin suggested and it has helped me to understand better the whole concept of the difference between taking medicines when pg and when bf. Thanks for that Juwes - the other thing is that apparently according to the website that boffin sent me to without its protective layer (of the plastic AND the grains within the plastic!) it apparently doesn't survive stomach acid, so the baby wouldn't even absorb it. Quite interesting as it is used to treat stomach acid lol! Therefore, I need to forget about this and just triple check when I am actually in hospital. I also feel a bit better that while pg the mother metabolises drugs not the baby - I have been constantly confused about how my 6 week old embryo dealt with this! I wish I'd known this before!

I have also looked on the NCT website and locally there are weekly post natal drop in sessions, including access to a bf consultant. It says that you are welcome to attend from 7 months plus so I think I will go along to that and try to talk through some of my concerns (and also then hopefully make a supportive contact for when things go wrong!) It would also be good to meet a few people too, because so far I only really know people who I knew before (I just happen to know quite a few pg women!).

I will try to forget about the production issue because I think it is starting to drive me a bit barmy . I think 6 weeks is a good idea, mainly because this is the time scale at which I am expecting to start being able to get my own life back a bit. Therefore in this time scale I have nothing to lose and I will be able to guage whether or not it is likely to be workable. Plus, at least assuming that I manage it at least LO will have 6 weeks benefit, which is likely to be better than nothing. If it all goes pear shaped, then so be it.

brettgirl2 · 15/03/2009 10:29

Is fennel aniseed bleugh!!! I eat plenty of chocolate though

Juwesm · 15/03/2009 10:33

I agree re: fennel! Bleugh indeed!!

mathsmummy27 · 15/03/2009 10:35

I bfed for about a month, and found it extremely hard - both on medical gounds (DD was very poorly) but also the whole idea that only I could feed, day and night. However, it won't stop me giving it a go this time, it's just that I won't beat myself up about it if I don't want to any more. Godd advice here - I would see what happens in first few dasy - you might love it - and make sure you have some ff stuff just in case. You can also mix from quite early on, although not always recommended - it did work for me though.

Thanks Boff, may try that - problem is, once I speak/move from bed, I can't get back to sleep

see you later, off for soft play and coffee

PuzzleRocks · 15/03/2009 10:37

Have a nice time MM.

PuzzleRocks · 15/03/2009 10:38

Brettgirl - That sounds like a really good approach.

bronze · 15/03/2009 10:40

I mix fed too.
I really wanted to bf knowing all the stats and having done a lot of research but I hated the sensation and there were times when I just couldn't cope with it. You know that feeling when you don't want to be touched? well it was like that but add in the fact its your nipples and ugh I can feel the sensation now. Oddly there were times though when it didn't bother me.

BoffinMum · 15/03/2009 11:33

I think also that all babies feed slightly differently, and sometimes it is difficult for one mother/child combo to get to grips with it, whereas a different mother/child combo might be fine.

Anyway, every day you manage to bf is another day where you have managed to stuff antibodies and good old long chain fatty acids into them, so a 'one day at a time' philosophy can be good when the going gets tough.

BabyBolat · 15/03/2009 11:52

Ok so I have cleaned the kitchen, I have done the washing, I have picked up MORE cat poo from the garden, I have done all my bills and banking for the month, collected all the rubbish to take to the dump. All I need to do is clean the car and put the car seat in but can't do that as some spud has parked outside my house!!! DH was supposed to finish ages ago but he is still at work so I am waiting.... (I am not very good at waiting!!!)

I have blown up my birthing ball and am now bouncing along on that while I type (although either I haven't done it enough or I am really fat as it is very squished ) and I have packed my hospital bags (little one for baby, little one for toiletries and medium one for me!) so I am ready for this baby to come....

......

Brett you seem much more chilled about it all which is great! Glad MN could be of help!

The weather is beautiful today - can't wait for DH to come home!

Bronze how you feeling now

MM have a good day!!

....

bronze · 15/03/2009 12:01

BB is that organisation stuff contagious. This morning I have done..... nowt. Nesting by any chance?

What have you packed? I packed my bags last night and just feel like I have so much stuff yet I'm not sure what I can leave out. I decided to do the labour bag then after bag this time though so DH can take one home after I've had him (the babythat is).

Right you have made me feel ashamed. Its a beautiful day and I havent even put washing out. Expect a big list of what I did this afternoon later.

BoffinMum · 15/03/2009 12:09

I too have done washing, and disinfected the dustpan and brush after the vomit incident, and sorted out the cupboard with cleaning materials in, and polished the sink in the downstairs loo, and found an old baby doll and accessories of DD's that DS2 will poribably enjoy having a secret little pre-baby fantasy play with. However I have now rendered myself incapable of walking as my groin has gone into spasm.

I bet Bleu is working like a dervish today. She will have baked a freezer full of food and hung about ten loads of washing out, all smelling of lavender, before weaving her own moses basket or something like that.

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 15/03/2009 12:17

Morning

Welcome Jbakedbean would you like to join our buddy system??

Boffin - at dopeing > and being riderless

Springy - i'm the same with the clingy, dh is loving it though we curled up on the sofa for marathon snuggle sesh and a bit of nuzzling. LOL lo handgs out of my right side it looks like i have a deformed bump with an extra lump trying to escape could definately do without the rib and fanjo booting too

BB - yay for the good night you domestic deamon you, gosh busy morning [smile

Brettgirl - just try giving your baby the first feed (most important feed)at the boob and then FF. If you arent really up for BFing then you dont have to. DD mangled my poor boobs on the first and second feed and i was told to FF after that as my nips were bleeding (who knew gums could be so lethal lol ). As for the omeprazole i was taking it pre preg for severe gastritus and am taking it now too, my doc says that its fine for preg and post if i intend to BF so dont let that get in the way you have to do whats right for you, see how you feel at the time and take bottles so that you have them if you decide that thats the way you want to go. xx

bronze · 15/03/2009 12:21

I've decided that actually I deserve a day off. This week I have done so much including painting our bedroom and sorting and freecycling galore. I will hang a load or two of washing out just becaus I get behind otherwise but this afternoon I intend to have a picnic in the garden with the children and then they can play while I potter in the green house and do chickeny things.

I'm really miffed though as I never get this fabled nesting instinct. The only time I ever had anything remotely resembling it was when I was in hospital with dd and couldnt do anything about it except write poor DH lists.

bronze · 15/03/2009 12:23

morning nutty

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 15/03/2009 12:25

Morning Bronze

Sounds like you're nesting to me painting and sorting is a prefect description

bronze · 15/03/2009 12:26

nah thats because I have no choice. Our house was terrible and we want to sell. Its not an urge I get sadly.

surprisenumber3 · 15/03/2009 12:28

Hi all.

have only just managed to get out of bed, have a shower and some breakfast! Have loads of housework but DH has taken kids to the park so thought I'd have a mega-quick catch up!

Overdid the shopping in Brum yesterday. Fell asleep with puffy hands and ankles when I got back. Can you believe they have run out of RLT capsules apparently everywhere? Ended up getting the tea bags.

Had a scary thing this morning! Got into shower and got terrible pains around bottom of bump and into back. stabbed pulsatingly (word??!!) for about 3 mins before easing off. Carried on having a shower and about 10 mins later came back even worse, had to rest my head on the tiles and whimper a bit! Got out really quick and started getting dry and it happened again, this time so bad I had to kneel on the floor resting against the bed. Started yelling at DH to get the kids ready as they were still leaping around in their PJ's and then lay down and it's all stopped - phew! Not even 36 weeks til the end of the week so don't want her to make an appearance just yet!

Thrush is a lot better now, thanks for all the tips Boff. The Bicarb seemed to work a treat. It is still a little sore down there but nothing like Friday night.

Right, I've got to catch up with the washing, cleaning and go food shopping.

Will catch up properly later x

mathsmummy27 · 15/03/2009 14:28

I'm back...what a lovely day

nesting? I am just sleeping. Can't seem to stay awake for more than a few hours at a time. Which could be a problem next week at work...

DD has made up for the early morning by having a lunchtime nap (YES!!!) so I'm off for a little snoooze zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
