Brettgirl - You can never have too many glitter balls!

Lulu - can we come?

The world would be a much nicer place if all dealers took payment in choccy biccies.

Aaaah I don't mean to laugh but when you mentioned the leg drag Quasimodo was the first thing that came to mind.

It will be over soon! And too right - what we have done without you on here!?

Yes, thanks Smutty - she slept amazingly after a couple of hours running round Vicky Park in the sunshine and no afternoon nap. Went down by 7:15 and slept straight through until 5:45. Blisssssssss! I'm feeling refreshed and full of the 'boing' of Spring!

(Got v. the other day when a friend of mine was complaining that her baby always wakes her up at 6:30. Explained as un-grumpily as I could that 6:30 is a lie in in my book)

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 17/03/2009 09:09

Right. Who wants what from the shop ?

LuLuBai · 17/03/2009 09:13

ooooooooooooh Ju I am craving cheeses so badly. I'm getting so bored of the same old same old. You've sent me straight back to daydreaming about my wine and cheese evening once the baby is born.

And yes, lets all go to the seaside.

Just going to look at Google maps and work out where my nearest coastline is. But to justify it I need to tie in my trip with some errands (I think I might need to visit the Weston-Super-Mare branch of Homebase to pick up some doornobs )

Kalikaroo · 17/03/2009 09:21

Morning all! Just got back from seeing the obstetrician and I'm now having a bit of a stress .

Baby is fine, but is now around about the 8 and a half pound mark (at 37+4), so pretty big. Not too worried about that as such, but the doctor felt the gap in my pelvis and said that she thinks it might be too narrow at the top because either the relaxin isn't doing its job, or I have a strangely shaped pelvis . Anyway, I have to go for an x-ray of my pelvis tomorrow to check that the baby will actually be able to fit through. If the gap is less than 10cm then I will have to have a c-section!! I know lots of people have them, but it hadn't even entered my head that I wouldn't be able to at least try giving birth naturally.

I'm pretty shocked since I'm not exactly slim-hipped and all the women in my family have had straight-forward vaginal births. I can't seem to get my head around the fact that I might have to have an elective c-section and if I do then the baby would be delivered next week!!!

Sorry for the me me me post.

Hope you're all having a good morning so far.

frekkles · 17/03/2009 09:24

cheers ladies. I only do it part time but i do love it. I decided on it after getting sick of 3 years post art college worrying about paying my rent every month on unpredictable self employed earnings. So I do 10 hours a week working with adults with learning disabilites and mental health problems, getting to help people, make a difference to their lives and learn valuable life skills myself and in return my rent and bills are always covered and i have the rest of the week free for making and teaching art. It's worked for me.

seaside and cheese! sigh!

baby is very sore today, pushing my chest where the hernia and heartburn is . hmph

BoffinMum · 17/03/2009 09:24

Kali, a trial of labour might be a possibility. How would you feel about that? Also water births help the pelvis expand.

surprisenumber3 · 17/03/2009 09:25

morning ladies. haven't got time to catch up at moment but wondered if you have any advice....

I know it's my third but I'm all stressed and can't think straight!

Since last night have had 'twinges' around the left side of my old c section scar. The scar is 10 years old so I don't think it is anything to do with that, it is just in that area.

This morning while taking the boys to school I had some really intense pulsating period type pain, so much that I swore very loudly and my friend grabbed me! Also had a feeling of something heavy in my vagina, but can't feel anything now!

Got back pain which is almost constant and am basically in agony everywhere. Not really having tightenings as such.

Supposed to be having my hair done at ten and really need it - shall I go? Or shall I pack my bags?!

LuLuBai · 17/03/2009 09:32

Surprise - I may be damned for being unsensible but I would get my hair done. But then I did my own hair when in labour with DD so perhaps my priorities are a bit skewiff....

Kalikaroo - guestimates of baby's weight pre-birth are extremely unreliable. The majority of women make babies that are suitably in proportion with their own bodies. Try not to worry too much in advance.

BoffinMum · 17/03/2009 09:33

Whack a san pad on, take some painkillers, go to the hairdresser and take your hospital bag with you, unless your labour is likely to be a two hour special. I say this because you will be able to look good on the post-birth photos with a bit of luck.

Or if you won't be able to sit still for long enough to end up with a straight fringe, then this is surely a sign you should go to the hospital.

Kalikaroo · 17/03/2009 09:34

Boffin - The doctor said that if it ends up being a 'borderline' measurement then they would need to evaluate the risks of trying for a natural birth, with a big possibility of having an emergency c-section (due to baby getting stuck, oxygen deprivation etc) versus having an elective c-section. So there would still be the possibility of trying to have the baby vaginally. She said that if it is less than 10 cm it is highly unlikely the baby's head will fit through and a c-section is the safest option for me and baby. She also said that if the gap is less than 10cm, the large size of the baby wouldn't matter anyway because there would be a risk of any baby getting stuck.

It's so frustrating because apparently the height and lower width of the gap are ok, it's just the shape/width of it at the top. When she felt it she pressed quite hard and said that the bones should usually 'give' a bit, but mine were completely tight and didn't move at all. My pelvis is now quite sore after all that prodding and pushing...

BoffinMum · 17/03/2009 09:34

I cooked a business lunch whilst in labour once. It was fine but I had to get in the ambulance before dessert was served.

Schulte · 17/03/2009 09:35

Morning all

What a lovely sunny day again. Planning to have lunch in a pub down by the river later, yay.

Bleu, you lovely lovely woman. You're too good for this world, worrying about your DH not getting enough time on his bike, and being nice to his ex who is clearly a total cow. Here is today's challenge for you: Do nothing. Be selfish. Put your feet up and only think about yourself. See if you can do it Oh and fgs don't let your ILs come and take over your precious personal space and help with the cleaning... mine tried to cheer me up by taking me out for lunch when I was a couple of days overdue and I declined. It was probably rude but then I was in a really grumpy mood and didn't want to see anyone. So I totally sympathise with you for not wanting them around. And, do all those things... painting the staircase etc. really have to happen before LO arrives?

Juw, thanks for pointing us to the bum sex thread - very entertaining at 8.30 in the morning especially the beautiful poem.

Springy, some women do get turned on by labour, I agree it's hard to imagine but I have definitely read about it.

Nutty at your lovely DH, buying you clothes, mine would never think of that and even if he did he wouldn't have a clue what size to get!

Ladies, re. this dusting / Pledge talk, get yourselves cleaners and dishwashers if you can at all afford it (and maybe even if you can't). Makes life sooooo much easier. When DD was tiny I had neither and every time she slept, I was rushing around with the hoover or doing the dishes, wearing myself out. Madness!

Carameli at using newborn nappies instead of maternity pads... my bum isn't small enough...

Okay will post now and then keep playing catch up...

LuLuBai · 17/03/2009 09:35

Frekkles - that's fab. Very inspiring. I hadn't really thought about doing something like that part time but it might be just the right sort of thing. I know I enjoy working with people with ld. Might give me the flexibility to do something more creative as another side line. Food for thought.

surprisenumber3 · 17/03/2009 09:36

thanks - right, I'm going to get hair done.
will catch up when I get back!

Have a lovely day all x

Kalikaroo · 17/03/2009 09:36

So, it looks like the size of the baby isn't important per se, but that I have a dodgy 'pelic gap' (?) - "mind the gap!" ... sorry, crap joke!

Kalikaroo · 17/03/2009 09:37

pelvic that should be...

BoffinMum · 17/03/2009 09:41

Kali, I would get a second opinion about this. I had this said to me with my first baby, actually on the day of labour, and managed to push her out no problem after 6 hours of labour.

If you have true cephalo-pelvic disproportion, which is incredibly rare btw, this would be indicated by a failure to progress, I think. That would give them an hour's lead time to prepare you for a section.

Has the baby's head started to engage at all? This is a sign that things fit (mine never did for the first pg, btw).

Juwesm · 17/03/2009 09:41

Kali - speak to midwife (or physio??) about exercises/ positions you could use to help widen the pelvis. The birth balls are supposed to help with this I believe. Our NCT lady advised us that labouring/ birthing in a squatting position can widen the pelvis by an extra 30%! Don't know how that works if the relaxin hasn't kicked in, but I imagine if you could start doing some gentle exercises now, things might start to loosen up. Doctors do seem a bit fixated on figures don't they. I thought the whole point of babies having squashy heads was so that they can squeeze their way through!

BoffinMum · 17/03/2009 09:44

Quite, Juwesm.

Kalikaroo · 17/03/2009 09:48

Thanks for the advice . Will speak to my midwife tomorrow and see what she says. The baby's head is down but it hasn't engaged yet.

I really want to try to have this baby naturally so I'm going to get bouncing on the birth ball!

Juwesm · 17/03/2009 09:49

I sat on my ball most of yesterday, and I could really feel a bit of an ache in my pelvis by the evening, so I think it definitely helps with the 'opening'!

Juwesm · 17/03/2009 09:52

And if midwife is not too helpful, you could perhaps try the NCT pregnancy and birth line - 0870 444 8709. I'm not sure what advice they provide, or even whether you have to be a member, but the magnet was on my fridge so....

Also, if anyone needs it at any point, the breastfeeding line is 0870 444 8708!

Off for a brief stroll in the lovely fresh air and sunshine now.
