nobbly bobbly? what's that, then?

BabyBolat · 16/03/2009 17:34

Its chocolate and strawberry ice cream on a stick with hundreds and thousands all around it!! yum

Juwesm · 16/03/2009 17:41

Kind of like a SuperFab then. I like the sound of that. Though now I really want a Feast, or possibly just a plai old choc ice.

BabyBolat · 16/03/2009 17:45

I am off to the shops - they say never shop whilst hungry - I wonder what they say about shopping whilst 8.5 months pregnant

HELP
PLEASE

Exactly how are you ment to get a two year old to take medicine when they really really REALLY wont.

Have been to Drs twice today once for my back and then for DD. She's been swabbed for scarlet fever poor thing and on antibiotics.

Except I can't get her to take them at all (it does taste pretty foul to be honest !).

Have tried bribery & corruption, cajouling, hilarity , spoon and syringe.

TBH I've never really had much success with her even with straight forward old calpol (and we've tried a verity of different ones of different flavour with no greater sucess) but never really needed to get something inside her before now.

DS was always pretty good in comparison.

Any suggestions welcome

Best get back downstairs before their tea goes everywhere

Juwesm · 16/03/2009 18:24

You could probably mix it with some yogurt, thin it down with juice or similar, but then you really would need to give it straightaway - the stability of the product would be affected so you couldn't leave it hanging around like that to try again later. You'd also need to make sure she gets whole dose - i.e. can't really mix it with a whole pot of yog for her then to only eat half of it. Is it in the fridge? Cold meds don't taste as strong (though most need to be kept in fridge anyway)

On reflection, I think yogurt would have worked best with me!

Calpol is pretty foul stuff. I remember cough medicine being 'strawberry medicine' and antibiotics being 'banana medcine' when I was little.

No small children of my own, so no better suggestions I'm afraid. Good luck!

LuLuBai · 16/03/2009 18:25

Nightmare mumble -your poor DD!

I have never much success with giving my DD drugs either. I once managed to dupe DD by putting some medicine in a baby bottle for her to drink, but she's wise to that now. Last time I had to give her some Calpol(a fever of 39.4) I while DH and I both restrained her together. When is your DH home? Or another strong adult? Feels very harsh but you need to do it.

Juwesm · 16/03/2009 18:30

If you really have no luck, you could always return the meds to pharmacy and see if they could re-dispense a different brand if they have it (probably depends on how friendly your pharmacy is). Or to dispense an alternative strength liquid with a different volume dosage (i.e. if she's having 5mls of 125mg/5ml, try 2.5mLs of 250mg/5mL - if its a different flavour). They may not do this though.

LuLuBai · 16/03/2009 18:34

Just re-read my post and the sentence is all jumbled.

I managed to give DD a syringe dose of Calpol while DH and I both restrained her (even with a fever she was resisting it ferociously).

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 16/03/2009 19:08

drat pc crashed and i lost my post grrrr

Auld ((hugs)) sending

Juw - my lo has quietened down quite a bit so nothing to worry about

Mumble - cake!! puor the medicine on some chocolate cake and dust with chocolate powder/sugar

mumblemumhome4lunch · 16/03/2009 19:10

Have given up for the night - she's in bed now....medicine-less

Juw - I was always of the "how hard can it be" school before I had my own !! Have tried yoghurt, weetabix (with lots of honey), orange juice, milk drink. I think the trouble is it has that mediciney aftertaste which small children just seem to be able to sense even before they taste the dratted stuff. After one or two small mouthfuls/sips it get's refused.

Will try asking at the pharmacy - ours is a dispensing GP practice ie very local and they know you quite well so hopefully they will be sypathetic. Have just been wondering if you can get penecillin sopositories (no idea if I've sp that correctly). If not someone could corner the market IMO !

LuLu - have used the restraint and syringe method before but it is just horrid. DH doesn't get hopme til gone 8pm most eves and DD usually in bed by 7pm at latest - neighbours also have DC same age with same bedtime and I've no family members close to hand. Even when we done this in the past, and I gave it a try solo tonight (nightmare with big bump and bad back) she seems able to sray spurt it everywhere no matter how long I hold her mouth shut for. Also, almost choked her.

Also, she needs the penecillin 4 times a day which means a whole day of fighting at present rate - really not looking forward to tomorrow

PuzzleRocks · 16/03/2009 19:13

Evening all. Looks like I have some catchng up to do. Today has been a busy one. Took DD to her class this morning, then ran errands in town and now have finally sat down to a sparkling clean house.
I am planning to stock up the freezer tomorrow and wash all DD's old baby clothes and the new stuff. The nesting bug has well and truly hit me.

Lulu - How exciting that your place is almost finished. Must be a real weight off your mind.

Kaz - Wonderful to hear your little ones are doing well. How are you feeling?

Kitty - Our daffs and bluebells have sprung up. Just waiting for the roses to put in an appearance now. I love the changing weather, it was glorious today.
And OMG! You look so neat and compact. Very

Boff - You lucky so and so, I still have 5 and a bit weeks. Although lately she feels like she may just fall out. Fingers crossed for you. Sorry BB!

Oddeyes - That's a very good size already.

Bleu - I get the kick sensations in my bottom too. I'm sure it's normal.

Surprise - Fabulous neat bump. And your boys are very cute.

Ok, off to settle DD, will catch up some more later.

mumblemumhome4lunch · 16/03/2009 19:14

Smutty
Great idea but I have odd DC.........neith of them like cake, sweets, icing, ice cream, fizzy drinks or anything of the sort.

I'm torn between being quite proud of them and exasperated at the same time. It's not even like I've kept these things away from them particularly as I believe everything has it's place, in moderation.

They do like chocolate and biscuits. They have been my brib=ry currency

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 16/03/2009 19:16

Mumble - chocolate will definately take the taste away or offer it as a treat after the medicine if you dont want to go down the cake route.

sorry mumble x posts

OP posts:
SmuttyNuttyTaff · 16/03/2009 19:21

what about a nuttela snadwich?? you could put the choc spread on both pieces and the the medicine in between??at least the bread would soak up the medicine or a honey sandwich??

OP posts:
BabyBolat · 16/03/2009 19:23

Oooh Mumble - I had scarlet fever and it was horrid!!! big sympathies for your LO - not to scare you in anyway but she needs those anti-biotics (I realise you know that!!), I ended up in hospital for 3 weeks with mine because it spread so much!

Have no useful advice other than bribes - can you make a wall chart and put a toy or something at the end of it and say if she gets a tick every day for taking her 4 bits of medicine she gets a toy (quite good one) at the end of it???

Juwesm · 16/03/2009 19:27

Not really terribly helpful, I know, but if it's Penicillin V, it is best given before food. Though of course, getting down at all is more important than worrying about an empty stomach. The toy/ wall chart thing sounds good. Could you make yourself up a bottle of similar looking liquid (?bright pink), and take your 'medicine', or let her give you yours at the same time? 5 have no idea how subtle/ cunning you have to get with a 2 year old!!

Juwesm · 16/03/2009 19:29

Don't know who 5 are, but I have no idea either!!

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 16/03/2009 19:30

Mumble - on the supository note, you know i think you can, am sure dd had them when she was little for something or other. not overly sure though, dont quote me on it.

OP posts:
mumblemumhome4lunch · 16/03/2009 19:31

BB - I know, keep remembering period dramas I've seen with small children dying from it !! Really hoping the swab comes back -ve.

Wall chart worked really well lately for keeping dry at night, have just stopped that one so good time to start a new one with a good prize at end - will definately try that tomorrow.

Smutty - love the nuttela sandwich idea....never tried it with them (can't stand the stuff myself so never have it in the house) but she does love sandwiches - it's what she will always say if asked what she wants for lunch/tea !!

Juwesm · 16/03/2009 19:33

No, sorry, no penicillin suppositories, unfortunately. Not in UK anyway.

Juwesm · 16/03/2009 19:34

Mmmmmmm, Nutella sandwich.......

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 16/03/2009 19:34

ah, oh well must of been something else?

OP posts:
Juwesm · 16/03/2009 19:35

Possibly was paracetamol, esp if she was very small/ very poorly.
