Only if they have told you that you need one. I got one because my babies have been getting bigger and bigger, and they wanted to make double sure I was OK for a home birth.

Juwesm · 16/03/2009 16:52

BB. You could make it from scratch, but proper custard just isn't the same as Bird's. Cold ready-made custard out of one of those boxes....Mmmmmmmmmmmm.

On the cake front, I was pleased to discover my emergency bar of chocolate was in fact 75% cocoa solids! This pleased me because 1) It meant I didn't have to fudge the recipe with cocoa powder and 2) I would not have been pleased to discover, in a moment of crisis, that my emergency stash was not in fact milk chocolate scoffing chocolate!

BabyBolat · 16/03/2009 16:54

juw I could if I had custard powder or MILK - i just had the last of it - will pop to the shops in half an hour or so and go get me some....

AuldAlliance · 16/03/2009 16:54

Checked thread but seems to be about no9 buses and rice pudding; if I'm missing anything vital, sorry!

Saw MW, had horrible Hep C blood test, and discovered my cervix is open (that doesn't sound very English: dilated maybe???). She didn't seem fussed about that, since I'm not having contractions. But she was fussed about the baby's position: he's all skewed over to one side, so his head isn't positioned very well (presumably if he's like that all the pushing in the world won't do much good, as he's not over the passage he should travel through!) and my cervix is all pulled over to the other side. She tried to coax him over a bit, but he didn't like it so she stopped. She then showed me exercises to do, but I can only do one lot because of my knee. She's got me all worried, now...
Next appointment in 2wks; fingers crossed he moves before then.

LuLuBai · 16/03/2009 16:57

Carameli that must have been heavy!

Ju - yes I believe there is a finite lifespan for the placenta but I also think that all women and babies are different and that this country is overly obsessed by 40 weeks.

I have a really long menstrual cycle so I would expect my babies to appear slightly later.

BabyBolat · 16/03/2009 16:59

I am bang on 28 days so I want my baby bang on DD please!!

I really think these last few weeks would be so much more bearable if you KNEW what day it was going to happen!!!

BabyBolat · 16/03/2009 17:00

Auld, if your LO is anything like mine he will twist and turn many time over the next two weeks so try not to worry!!!

LuLuBai · 16/03/2009 17:03

Oooh Auld - "cervix pulled over to the other side"? Doesn't sound great.

Are you sleeping on your left hand side? My DH keeps pushing me back if I accidentally roll onto my right hand side in the night.

After sleeping on right side last week when left shoulder was bad the baby was all in the wrong position but it's settled back into the right slot now - pressing down uncomfortably into my cervix.

AuldAlliance · 16/03/2009 17:03

BB, I think that's the MW's take on it, too.
I am just feeling a bit negative, I reckon, as have been fretting again about DH's work situation. DS woke me up at 4:30 this morning saying he couldn't sleep, so tiredness is probably to blame.
Hope you are feeling a bit better...

Juwesm · 16/03/2009 17:06

Does anyone else have less movement from LO now it is getting more and more cramped in there? I keep having paranoid moments where I realise I haven't been aware of any wriggling for some time. I then poke the poor thing awake, freeze it with icy cold drinks, and spend the next two hours being pumelled from within as punishment for the cruel treatment I have doled out. I think on the whole I just haven't been aware of the movement as I've been busy yakking on MN sorting the nursery or cooking or similar, but I do recall someone saying you get less movement towards the end due to cramped conditions.

AuldAlliance · 16/03/2009 17:07

LuLu, that bit didn't strike any good chords with me, either...
I have been trying to sleep on my left, but that hip is a bit iffy, so I think I roll onto the right hand side in the night. Will try and wedge myself with cushions, pillows, etc. Don't like to ask DH to keep an eye on me, as he's sleeping really badly, because he's stressed about his job situation.

BabyBolat · 16/03/2009 17:08

Juw - I have much less movement and that is natural according to the Internet and my drs so not to worry, think it is a combination of the baby size and getting into position!

LuLuBai · 16/03/2009 17:09

Auld - birthing balls are also recommended for helping get baby settled in the right position.

I find walking helps too (albeit uncomfortable at times) but if you have a bad knee maybe not. Swimming?

Ju - apparently babies really slow down their movement when labour is imminent. You never know....

BabyBolat · 16/03/2009 17:09

I am so disappointed in my cupboards - really we have NOTHING IN THEM!!! grrr!!!

LuLuBai · 16/03/2009 17:11

Auld - I didn't ask DH to keep an eye on me at night. That's what I get for encouraging him to read up on pregnancy and birth. V irritating when I have just settled into a comfy little ball and he starts forcibly rolling me across the bed.

BabyBolat · 16/03/2009 17:14

LOL at 'forcibly rolling me across the bed' - how different that statement may be in a couple of months.

My DH just elbows me in the head! or back = no love there

Although have to say wake up in immense pain if I lie on my left side or back so am stuck in one position - no matter how dead that side of my body goes!

Juwesm · 16/03/2009 17:16

BB - In desperation for ice-cream and choc sauce I made hot chocolate sauce the other week using Nutella and some yogurt (practically ganache, I thought!). I generally find if you stand and stare mournfully at the cupboards for long enough, you'll always fancy something.

BabyBolat · 16/03/2009 17:19

oooh ice cream - we have a nobbly bobbly in the freezer!!! yay!!!

AuldAlliance · 16/03/2009 17:19

LuLu, I'll try and drop into the conversation the fact that I need to be on my right. But he has a lot on his plate, so I don't want him to feel he has to be looking out for me at night.
I think my house is about 300m from DS's school, so if I do the walk 8 times a day, that's a fair bit of walking, especially as I usually walk to the bakers and the shops most days as well. Don't have a birthing ball, and don't really have room for one.
Will spend a lot of time rocking my pelvis, on all fours, I guess.

LuLuBai · 16/03/2009 17:19

Just delved into the cupboards (remember I am living at my mother's right now so the back of the kitchen cupboards really is a mystery to me). Joy of joy there was a jar of Birds Custard Powder in there!

But then I remembered what my mother is like and checked the best before date: Jan 01.

Is that 2001 or could it be worse: 1991, 1981... the mind boggles !?!?

When I first moved down here I discovered that she had gone away for the whole winter leaving a packet of pitta in the fridge, and a jar of mayonaise best before October 2003. This place is a death trap. How did I survive infancy????

mathsmummy27 · 16/03/2009 17:20

dammit, missed the mucus plug stuff..it can be much greener, or bloody than that vid, and come away in bits rather than one whole.

gotta run, back in a bit

BabyBolat · 16/03/2009 17:22

LOL LuLu my mum used to be like that until we made her have a sort out!!! I think it is 2001 but still pretty bad...

Juwesm · 16/03/2009 17:29

What is a knobbly bobbly? Is that the artist formerly known as a Famous Feast? Or a Fab?

Try the custard powder - I reckon if it still goes from pale pink to yellow, it is fine.

BabyBolat · 16/03/2009 17:30

MM can we change your name from mathsmummy to mucusmummy?!!

LuLuBai · 16/03/2009 17:30

oh yeah - doh! must be 2001 otherwise would say 91 or 81.

Bloody hell - my pregnancy brain is appalling. Hope mathsmummy missed that!

Still not eating the custard though.
