yeh its in all our books and stuff, about what to avoid, hopefully she'll already know

BoffinMum · 15/03/2009 23:07

I also went to a seminar given at Cambridge by one of the leading US authorities on childhood diseases (you are going to ask me what his name is now, and I would really have to dig a bit to remember), and he stressed this advice as well (in fact he argued for vaccination of children against chickenpox, as I recall).

Pg women should stay away from chickenpox because the issue of immunity is complex - as I understand it from my run in with Parvovirus whilst pg last time, you still 'get' these diseases, in the sense that there is an attack on your immune system, but you just don't develop symptoms because you already have the antibodies. However they can sometimes affect the foetus anyway, as I understand it from what the consultant explained to me. (We need a doctor to confirm this info, I think).

However bringing a newborn into a home where chickenpox is recently in evidence would be potentially disastrous because you have no way of knowing exactly the extent of the quarantine period, etc. I have two friends who had to stay in hospital with newborns while their other DCs had the infection, for precisely this reason.

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 15/03/2009 23:09

thank goodness dd has already had it!

OP posts:
BoffinMum · 15/03/2009 23:14

All mine have had it, quite badly. Nasty disease. I wonder whether I could vaccinate DS3 against it later on??

BoffinMum · 15/03/2009 23:16

BTW I specifically asked the specialist after the seminar if you could get chickenpox twice, because I was always being phoned up by DS1's nursery whittering on about him having the odd spot and thinking this was happening, and the specialist said most emphatically that you could not get it twice.

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 15/03/2009 23:20

is there a vaccine yet?? yep CPox is no fun at all we had to tape mittens to dd's hands to stop her scratching (sounds cruel but she would have torn herself to shreads even though we cut her nails short), poor little mite all over her face, fanjo, bum just everywhere. she looked like a lil naked (she really didnt want any clothes on) ghost we covered her in that much calamine lotion and cream

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 15/03/2009 23:22

its shingles in adults though isnt it if you've not had it as a kid which is farking scary territory!!

OP posts:
BoffinMum · 15/03/2009 23:23

I used Piriton liquid with the youngest and he suffered a lot less.

I remember poor DS1 having it and him sitting in a tepid bath with chamomile aromatherapy oil looking and obviously feeling absolutely wretched.

BoffinMum · 15/03/2009 23:24

I have not had shingles myself but a colleague got it last year and was off for ages.

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 15/03/2009 23:24

is the piriton liquid topical? or medicine?

Reply from MNTowers - they aren't going to email her just yet, as you have managed to text, but will consider passing a message on later if we are still worried.

Off to bed now. Night night. xx

Morning all, see I'm first to post. I do have a slight advantage being an hour ahead. Still trying to catch up, these threads move so quickly.
Need. More. Coffe. Particularly as I've spent the last half hour researching reusable nappies, there's a lot of information to absorb (absorbtion being key when thinking about nappies). Think I'll use disposables for the first couple of weeks then rent reusables for a month.

BabyBolat · 16/03/2009 07:36

Morning all

Hey minush - another early MNer!!!

All this talk of chicken pox has made me very itchy!! Think you are all right about Swali she is pretty knowledgeable about all this stuff I think!!

Oh Minush I spent ages looking at reusable nappies and I got so very confused, I just ended up literally picking the ones that I was most attracted too and go from there.

I need to get my bum in to gear and start getting some work done but the sofa is so comfortable!!!

minush · 16/03/2009 07:43

Swalisan, hope the DCs CP aren't making everything too much of a misery and that you're taking care of yourself.
BB, we've been making pretty much everything as have gone from a 42 metre apt to a 69 metre one so can actually have furniture! The chest of drawers was the worst. Now it's done and we're still together but I'll definitely be restricting myself to an advisory role in the future.
Puzzle isn't it mystifying? Particularly whent they open the fridge, gaze at it and feebly enquire where the sausages/butter/cheese are. If I ever have a DS I am going to make a study of his search and find abilitesand try to ascertain if it's down to nurture or nature.
On subject of male/female traits moving apts has revealed DHs fondness for scented candles. He's filled the apt with them and actually gets quite excited about trying out new scents. After typing this another possibility has occured to me - he's not really a secret interior designer, but I pong and the candles at least cover up the worst of my noxious pregnancy fumes

minush · 16/03/2009 07:48

Morning BB, some of those reusables are pretty cute aren't they? I've found a scheme near me that rents a bundle of different brands so reckon I'll give it a go.
Now the nappy issue is resolved (theoretically, if not practically) time to look at baby slings. Quite fancy the look of the babasling - simple, easy to use, plus there are some going cheap on ebay at present.

minush · 16/03/2009 07:56

Now I finally have furniture, I've decided todays the day I (begin) to get organised for baby. This will - of course - consist largely of spending money, but also preparing myself. I haven't yet done anything remotely ante-natal in preperation for the birth, so I'm going to be massaging and prodding strange parts of my body, breathing in a focused manner while clutching ice cubes and choosing some choice curses to use on DH while in labour (fear my creativity may dessert me if I don't plan ahead

minush · 16/03/2009 08:00

today's

In general I've enjoyed pregancy so far (I know I'm very very very lucky after having read about people's pregnancies here)but one of my stranger symtons has been that my spelling and grammar have gone down the tube. Not helped by using a micro mini keyboard with a skittish cursor

bronze · 16/03/2009 08:00

morning

BabyBolat · 16/03/2009 08:05

Morning bronze

Minush I went for the close baby carrier and really like it - admittedly have no experience of it but tried it out with babies and toddlers and was really comfy and supportive but think you have to go with whatever feels right!

I have hated pregnancy so far!! Well that is not 100% true, there are parts of it that I have thought were Ok but am in no rush to do it again anytime soon!!!

minush · 16/03/2009 08:11

Morning Bronze

tristaleejac · 16/03/2009 08:13

Morning guys
Nappies and wraps eh?
Well I'm going to use plain old terry nappies because they are so practical. Very quick drying. I'll use muslins to start with.
I just finished making my own wrap. It's 5 metres long, 18 inches wide and is purple and tye dyed! It's great, does the job and only cost 12 quid to make. Had a wee look on t'internet and cheapest one to buy was 38 quid so I'm pretty chuffed.

minush · 16/03/2009 08:13

BB, When do you start your mat leave: 8 months preggers women should NOT have to get up off the sofa!
