Hi

DandyLioness, sounds like your MIL is being completely unreasonable, I can't imagine mine (or my mum) ever behaving that way. It must be so distressing esp when things are difficult enough already. I can't believe how calm you're being. I'd be furious. Good to have your BIL on side though.

MatthewAndBumpsMummy, I know how you feel trying to post regularly and stuff; I haven't been on in ages, have just spent about two hours reading the last 2 weeks' worth of posts - everyone is so active on here that I haven't got a chance of keeping up!

I'm also not great with advice on things - this is my first time, I have no medical knowledge and I'm having a remarkably trouble-free run so far (physically and emotionally) - so sometimes I just read and empathise and don't feel equipped / qualified to comment. Hope that doesn't make me a freaky hanger on?

What I think is great is the way that everyone on here is so supportive - and says the things that I've been wondering about but am too embarrassed / weirded out by to ask!

I've been desperately trying to pack in loads of weekends away / catching up with friends before I'm too fat to go outside... have been busy all year and am booked up every weekend between now and Easter. Have a feeling I MAY be overdoing it slightly, oh well!!

PS If I promise to post at least once a week, can I please please please go back on the list??!

Polony · 25/02/2009 17:04

Sorry I'm always too slow so there are inevitably more posts by the time I get round to posting.

From what I understand, induction is not a very good way of avoiding a c section. I know it all comes down to what makes you feel most comfortable on the day, and of course you never know how it'll turn out so theres no sense in having too many expectations.

My friend just had her baby girl the other day - because she's 5 ft her consultant wasn't keen on her going any more than a couple of days over 40 weeks, although her baby was 7 pounds. So they induced at two days beyond her due date. Her cervix didn't dilate, so they had to perform the c section.

Being the nerd that I am, a while back I googled the induction drugs that are listed in my antenatal records in the section for labour notes - it puts things into perspective. Misoprostol (sp?) is an interesting one, wikipedia have some interesting info on that.

FiKelly · 25/02/2009 17:05

reebee it can be quite overwhelming first time round.. don't feel you have to give advice or keep up with the pace of chatter. Add yourself back on and just let us know how you're doing even if it's to say you're luckily worry and problem free! i'm sure our chatter about things helps everyone..

alapala so sorry to hear about your friend It must be such a shock. You hear of these things happening but they're so rare you never expect it to be anyone close. Sending you un-mumsnetty

reebee welcome 'back' Don't worry about keeping up, just keep posting whenever you feel like it! I generally come on once a day but even so I can't always keep up with everyone.

Dandy you sound very calm in the circumstances. What a shame for everyone concerned that she insists on being so unreasonable and as someone said earlier cutting off her nose to spite her face. I had a boss once whose favourite saying/piece of advice whenever we were riled by anyone was 'water off a duck's back'. Not so easy when it's your nearest and (not so) dearest but IMO the principle is sound - to try not to descend to their level, however tempting it might be. Sounds like your DH is doing a good job standing up to her. Hope it sorts itself out soon.

Fi thanks for those links. I've got a couple of wrap over sleep suits from JoJo Maman Bebe but they don't have any vests.

desty what a super-mum you are!! The cow outfit is so fab. I bet Lottie had the best costume. Did you get her to moo in the end?

How sad about David Cameron's son. My friend's baby (6 wks) has had symptoms that sound similar to Ivan's (to me, but I haven't seen them) & the condition is being investigated. Apparently it could be lots of things, many of which are not serious in the long term, so they're trying to stay positive. I've been thinking about her a lot but it must be extra hard for her hearing about this .

Polony · 25/02/2009 19:21

Oh Detsy Lottie looks so gorgeous in her cow/mouse suit! What a scrumptious little cutie pie!

Um earlier I asked everyone about their car trip to hospital (cheers hypatia) - I should clarify that what I meant to ask is how did those of you who have had babies before find the car trip to hospital - during labour? It wasn't important, I just realised I'd made it sound like I wondered who you all felt about car trips to hospital anytime...

FiKelly · 25/02/2009 19:25

polony My trip to the hospital to have ds was not a normal one... MW diagnosed pre-eclampsia at my normal 38.5wk check up and sent me off in an ambulance from the doctors surgery on my own so can't help with the being in labour car journey...

OP posts:
SpangleMaker · 25/02/2009 19:42

polony I'm interested too... my trip is 25min in clear traffic & about an hour at peak times, so I'm hoping I don't have a super quick labour & ruin DH's leather seats. Actually he'll probably insist we go in my car!

SpangleMaker · 25/02/2009 19:43

Obviously the thought of delivering the baby in the car is more worrying than ruining the seats... well, it is to me, anyway!

Febes · 25/02/2009 20:15

Evening all!!
Lots of chat today.
RE car trip to hospital. I went into hospital 4 times before being admitted finally (long latent phase!!) so I tried in the back seat on all fours, hugging my birthing ball, in the front passenger seat and all. Stopping for traffic lights is a bit embarrassing when you are huffing and puffing.
RE epidurals I ended up having one but I was one of the people that it didn't really work on. it did take the edge off but I could still feel everything. I hope to avoid it this time and stick to gas and air and tens machine as I want to avoid all the monitoring and try to birth in a pool if possible.
Detsy- The cow costume is amazing. I'll have to brush up on my creative skills if Anabel has any dress up days.

Dandy - I did jump in and add myself after ReeBee - thanks for the heads up though

I am eager to see if I make it to my EDD - my mother just told me recently she was 6 weeks early with my brother (her first) and she was 8 weeks early with me and my sister (twinnies!). I knew we were early and figured that was just because we are twins.

I perused some medical journals to see if there was a consensus on premature births being hereditary and found as many say yea as nay. I asked my doctor and she got a bit wide-eyed and put it on my chart and said that in her experience often what your mother experienced is similar in daughters, so it was definitely something she would monitor.

Belgianchocolates · 25/02/2009 20:56

Hi everyone. Sorry I did mean to get back on here this pm, but ended up being busy: aquanatal, followed by a mad dash to the dcs school, followed by another mad dash back to the swimming pool for dcs swimming lessons, dinner followed by belated pancakes (smile) and then homework and bedtime. Now I've finally got time for myself again!

re an infarcted placenta: Don't worry about it happening again, it's just one of these things that can happen and it doesn't mean that it will happen again nor is it predictable to whom it will happen. Infarctions are white or red patches on your placenta. When a placenta matures it becomes calcified and feels gritty. This also happens more with smokers. I think it's a bit naughty that that mw said that if your pregnancy carried on your baby would have died. Usually if the placenta's function deteriorates you'll pick it up because baby's movements will be reducing as it wont get enough nutrition. That is often enough for you to be monitored and if you continue to report reduced movements you'll end up being induced, because clearly baby isn't happy in there for some reason. Dating a pregnancy is not an exact science and so if your placenta was not in good condition when you were 6 days after your due date, it could just be that your dates were slightly wrong.

I can't remember who it was now who wanted a C/S if baby was too big or to be induced early before baby got too big. I don't know how your particular trust works, but generally it's not the cmw who decides what will happen regarding your delivery. You should be having a consultant appointment a bit later on to discuss the mode of delivery or you could ask your cmw, for a consultant referral, because you want to discuss the mode of delivery with him/her. Ultimately the decision will be yours and the consultant's together after a discussion of the pros and the cons and not your cmw's. She's probably just saying that she's never heard of anyone doing what you want to happen, but that doesn't mean that after a discussion with a consultant it can't happen. I have met people in the past who were in a very similar situation and who did get what they wanted or who e.g. wanted to try for a normal birth, but would rather have a c/s if they go 10 days past their due date rather than being induced.

dandy I'm still amazed at how rude your MIL is. Luckily both your DH and BIL support you. We've got the whole of B'ham between us and DH's parents, not quite a continent, but far enough not to have these sort of problems anyway!

re: car trips. I was 'lucky' enough not to be in labour during my car trips to hospital. I had to go in twice because my waters broke and then my labours started after I got there. So I was quite comfortable, though wet (a bin liner on the seat was definitely a must!)

re epidurals (again) to all of those who had one when being induced. That's exactly one of the times I'd probably request one too, even though I'm not a fan of them. Induced labours are just more painful and that's well known, so I don't blame you for asking for one before the syntocinon is started.

polony as for induction drugs. Misoprostil is not used in the UK. It's only used for late terminations. Generally what's used in the UK is something called Prostin E2 which can come in a gel or pessary form, followed by breaking the waters, followed by a syntocinon drip if neither of the previous have set of labour. Some units use Propes, which is also a prostoglandin, but a pessary that stays in for 24 hours and has a steady release and is then removed once labour starts.

Belgianchocolates · 25/02/2009 20:58

Ah it was jael who was asking the question about the big baby, C/S, induction scan thing.

Looking back: what an essay I've written!

FiKelly · 25/02/2009 21:11

belgian wow what a busy afternoon... bet you thought being on maternity leave would be less tiring?! Thanks for the tip about the bin liner... i may well be making use of that one. I def don't want any prostin this time... i had 2 doses of pessaries and 1 lot of gel last time to no avail... infact my bishops score went lower the more doses/s&sweeps they tried! ds was obviously very happy where he was thankyou v much, so if i hadn't had the pre-eclampsia things would have been a very different story for me last time.

OP posts:
Belgianchocolates · 25/02/2009 21:18

fi it's always more difficult to induce early, but it can be successful, so it's always worth a try.

On a lighter note. I read a funny article today about baby names. Can you beleive there are people out there called Stan Still, Rose Bush, Helen Back and best of all Carrie Oakey!

Momino · 25/02/2009 21:24

Belgian, you're so lovely to give your MW advice outside work. thanks so much!

about car trips: dd1 was induced 2 wks early (suspected cholestasis) so was already in hosp when labour started. but dd2 was having contractions in the car. luckily it was just a 15 minute drive. i promptly cried when i arrived at hospital.

wondering what the next labour will be like. anyone know if baby no. 3 is supposed to be as quick as no. 2 is supposed to be?

FiKelly · 25/02/2009 21:30

belgian LOL

OP posts:
pulapula · 25/02/2009 21:41

Gosh this thread has been busy- so many messages i only skim ready them sorry.

re. the syntocinon drip, I can see the need for an epidural belgianchocs! I wasn't induced but was given the drip when my contractions had faded to next to nothing, and I must say that was the worst bit of my labour or more specifically the worst bit was when my midwife said "let's give it half an hour before we start pushing again". They were the worst contractions ever and really frequent. I then had a spinal block because they decided if the ventouse didn't work i'd need an emcs and it was the most wonderful thing ever! similar to an epidural and took away all the pain.

As for baby vests, Boots (minimode) do some cheap plain white vests which have 2 poppers on the shouders which negate the need to pull vests over floppy newborn heads as you can put them on bottom up. I used them with DD and DS. here's a link although you can buy them in larger stores. minimode.co.uk/baby-unisex-5-pack-of-white-sleeveless-bodysuits

pulapula · 25/02/2009 21:44

Momino- sorrry to be the bearer of bad news but my midwife said at aquanatal that 2nd birth is generally quicker/easier, but 3rd is generally more tricky (she's not sure why!).

Belgianchocolates · 25/02/2009 21:46

momino I've always found 3rd babies are a bit unpredictable, they can go either way, i.e. some are more difficult than no2 some are easier. My strategy is to go for a hb so hopefully it'll be a repeat from dd (5h only g&a, kneeling,...) or even better!

Belgianchocolates · 25/02/2009 21:52

Oh pula I tried not to scare Momino! That's why I said unpredictable ! Still they're not always more difficult. There was a thread on here once from someone who asked 3rd baby experiences, because she'd heard about 3rd babies being difficult and there were loads of positive stories on there. I think it was this one

FiKelly · 25/02/2009 21:55

pulapula ooo those vests look great. not seen them before and handy to have a sleeveless option too.

OP posts:
flippineck · 25/02/2009 21:56

Evening all! So much talking again, even in one day.

Alapala - so sorry to hear your news, it must have been a real shock to everyone.

Dandy - your MIL - !

Re car journeys - with DD I had a 20 minute (non rush hour) car journey. It didn't occur to me to sit anywhere other than the front seat with the seat belt on, and tbh it was b**y horrible. Every contraction (about every 3-4 minutes by then, and lasting over a minute each time) killed me as I has stood up/walked around pretty much all the time until that point. i had remembered to sit on a bin bag and towel just in case of further leakage of waters. Maybe it would have been better to lie down on the back seat or something, bt I wasn't thinking at the time. HB this time!
