Belgian As you've now become a surogate midwife to us all now I was wondering if you could advise me with something,

When I had Madi the placenta came out they stuck it in a bowl and ran off with it straight away, didn't let me look at it or anything, then a little while later (whilst I was being stitched up!) a midwife came in and asked me if I was a heavy smoker or drinker, i said no why, and she said that my placenta was infarcted? sp? that was all she said other than that it was just poorly. I later found out from Dr that that meant that the placenta had started dying and if Madi hadn't of come out when she did it she could have died to, I've never got any explanation as to why it was like that and what it actually meant. Should it be something I need to worry about with this pregnancy? Should I bring it up with Midwife at next appointment?

Thats a whole lotta links Fi !

Momino · 25/02/2009 14:46

Fi, what a comprehensive list, many thanks for that work! Will check them out as soon aspossible.

chocolatebunnies, your placenta story sounds frightening. I'm not familiar with the term but you should defn bring it up to MW. Let's see what Belgian says.

FiKelly · 25/02/2009 15:06

chocolatebunnies I just googled it and i'm none the wiser!! too much medical lingo to make complete sense to me... one page suggested it had links to high blood pressure other pages due to natural breakdown of the placenta when you go over your due date... think belgian is def our best one on this

FiKelly · 25/02/2009 15:22

DandyLioness sounds like your MIL is cutting her nose off to spite her own face! It's her loss... and you're right there's no pleasing some people. I hope you have a lovely birthday meal out with DD later, at least without your MIL it may be less stressful for all. Shame she can't even bring herself to phone and wish dd a happy birthday but i suppose there's still time for the phone to ring before dd goes to sleep....

Hiya ladies.

I'm all better again now thankfully, it was food poisoning in the end, so pretty glad it didn't turn out worse than it did.

Went to see MW again today, and again, they couldn't feel which way baby was laying, because of all my water. Which kinda peeved me abit.

Had a little talk with MW who isn't very helpful. I was planning an elective CS, but am now coming around to the idea of wanting to try naturally again, however, I had a few concerns, which she didn't really help me with. Last time with DD I was in labour for over 26 hours, and only ever dilated 6cm, ended up having emerg CS. The surgeon said that I would have never been able to push her out anyway, she was 9lb 4oz, and apparently my parts arent big enough to push a baby of that size out. At a scan 2 weeks ago I had to have, they said baby was looking on the large side again. All i wanted to know from MW, is could I have a growth scan at 36+ weeks to check babys weight and get estimated birthweight if I carry to term, to then work out if I'm able to have the baby naturally, obv if they estimate the baby is over 9lb I won't be able to, and if possible, be induced 38/39 weeks if baby is a "sensible" weight, so I can deliver natually and not have a CS. She wasn't helpful at all. She said they won't induce before 40wks unless ther are serious problems. I just want to try not have a CS. If I have one again this time, MW said she is 100% sure i'll have to have CS with any other children we may have. I just don't understand why they're not willing to induce at 38/39 weeks if baby was of a "sensible" weight that I could push out, and save me having to undergo a CS again.

Sorry that's so long. And it probably doiesn't sound right at all, cuz I still can't get my words and explanations out properly lol Jael X

jael I only had the emCS last time at 39wks due to pre-eclampsia. I suppose they don't like inducing unless they have to as it very often leads to a much longer, exhausting & complicated labours in comparison to your waters popping naturally when you're ready. Though with the size of your baby last time I can see why you'd want to get on with everything early . Are they going to do a growth scan at 36wks?

Jael · 25/02/2009 15:36

She said she doubts they'll do me a growth scan either, I have a very helpful midwife lol she said they won't scan me again, which is all very good, but she's not even filling in my growth chart, cuz she "can't" feel which way babys lying to measure my tummy. So she can't even tell how big baby is, which is a great help! I feel like giving up! Jael X

MatthewAndBumpsMummy · 25/02/2009 15:43

thanx for all the links on wrap vests fi id never even heard of them before now but they sound like a really good idea.

sorry to hear about your MIL problems dandy and seems so sad for your DD that she cant just admit she's wrong and apologise. hope things get sorted soon and you get the apology you deserve. i too have an irrational MIL and know how much hard work they can be so really feel for you over this situation.

chocolatebunnies sorry to hear about your placenta worries, i cant be of any advise myself but hopefully belgian will be able to help you understand and hopefully put your mind at rest a little. i am now too abit worried as my ds was 13days late and they never said anything about my placenta but if that happened to you after just 6days then why to they leave us so over due when things can go so wrong. this whole giving birth experience can be so frightning and worrying with so many things that can go wrong. its so lovely we all have each other to give support and advise when we can.

frazzled im sure there is still plenty of time and room for the lo to change posisiton so dont let your midwife makes you think otherwise, im sure a different midwife would have a completly differnet opinion. it still feels to me like my lo is still moving around loads and not just kicks either it feels like it totally changes position sometimes.

im really trying to keep up abit more lately with all the posts coz feel rather bad posting and asking for advise when i dont often get the chance to help others myself and miss things out and dont comment on them. i know how sad i feel sometimes when no-one comments on my posts so im really trying to keep up and keep involved.

MatthewAndBumpsMummy · 25/02/2009 16:02

oh sorry you feel like giving up jael your midwife doesnt sound very helpful at all its sounds like it makes sense to me to induce you a few weeks early if the baby is not too big then, i know they dont like to give inductions unless needed coz they can lead to more complications but surely avoiding a cs would be better for you. i cant believe they wont consider giving you a growth scan at 36wks just to see either sounds abit silly to me but then i dont really know how it all works. my mum had the same problem as she has 8lb babies and she never dilatded fully and was unable to give birth naturally as we were both to big for her smaller parts. she on the other hand was trying to be convinced to go natraully with her second birth but decided against it coz she had such an horrific first labour and then an emergency cs. and after she had me her consultant admitted that she was right to opt for an elcs because she would not have been able to deliver naturally. but if your willing to try i dont understand why they wont even consider it by using a growth scan to check things out beforehand. well try and stay positive and remember were all here to help when we can and just offer a shoulder to cry on when needed, i know i often need one.

chocolatebunnies · 25/02/2009 16:11

matthewandbumpsmummy that went through my mind, if that happened only 6 days after then surely this time round I should be monitored incase it happens again?! I don't know, may just bring it up with midwife next time I see her, thing is, if they then say they'll induce me on my due date to prevent that then my home birth will be out the window! Hopefully belgian will be able to point me in the right direction! Shes going to get a shock when she comes on later with us all needing her!

jael your midwife sounds like a real PITA! can you request to see another one? or just casue merry hell so they will sort something for you? thats what i'd do!

dandy i really feel for you with your MIL problems, you dont need that kind of stress at the mo, and your poor DH! Hope your DD has a lovely birthday tomorrow and its not to manic for you!

LoobyLou36 · 25/02/2009 16:14

alapala sorry about your terrible news

detsy fab cow outfit! love the fluffy udder

Had a midwife appointment today. BP is fine and I'm measuring 30 at 30+3 - so good news!Unfortunately the MW at the hospital who took my 28wk bloods managed to label them wrongly so the CMW had to take them again today - not good I hate needles
So next appointment with CMW in 2wks and then consultant again on St patricks Day (and also our wed anniversary) in 3wks.

Which reminds me - i must book the cottage in cornwall for our weekend away.

chocolatebunnies · 25/02/2009 16:17

Loobylou36 my birthday is st. patricks day! Had completly forgotton about it! 3 weeks! Woohoo!!! Will be the grand old age of 22!

Polony · 25/02/2009 16:45

Jael I would have thought you'd have a bigger fight on your hands wanting to AVOID induction etc - so if they don't want to induce/ scan, I would take that as a sign that as far as your carer is concerned there would be no reason why you wouldn't be able deliver naturally at term. Although taking anything for granted wouldn't be wise - just keep asking questions, then you can decide how you feel about it all. Personally, from what I've read about induction methods, I'm quite keen to avoid them unless they're quite necessary. Out of interest why do you feel that you couldn't deliver a 9 pound baby naturally? Apologies if I've missed an earlier post.

Dandy your MIL sounds like a nasty piece of work lately. What a shame. A few years ago we had a bit of a similar situation. It was about a year before anyone spoke again, mostly because she refused to speak to any of us. My brother thinks ultimatums are no good even if they're totally reasonable, he says "kill it with kindness"...I sometimes find it hard to find the stomach for that, but I guess thats what we did in the end and it did work. You can't change people, but you don't have to take their crap either. Half a planet of distance is useful .

Fi thanks ever so much for the links!
