Hope no-one minds me kicking this one off - 39 pages seemed a bit unmanageable!

Had 20 week scan today. Tiddler unco-operative to start with (although not as bad as DD was - took 3 goes to see everything) and it looks like most of the bits are in the right places. Decided right at the very last minute not to find out the sex. Realised that, if DD thinks she's going to have a sister, that nothing, not even photographic evidence, will change her mind anyway. So stuck with the 'don't ask don't tell' as per first time around and will just have to wait to sort out all the sodding clothes 'til we know what we've got.

Although... What do gonads look like on a scan?! Got a very good look at the hips from underneath, so to speak, and thought I saw two little bright spots, but that could be the sitting bones of course. Anyone tell me what the crown jewels look like on a scan?!

Hey all,

happy mother's day too this time next year i'll be a mummy- funny thought!

just wanted to pop in and ask if anyone's feeling reduced movement recently? i will be 25 weeks tomorrow and things seem a lot calmer in there, i get the odd gently wriggle but nothing as forceful as what i was feeling last week (it calmed down on thursday..)

no news from me but good to hear from those who got bargains at the nct sales- i have one near me in May so will hopefully pick up a few bits then - do you have to be there mega early??

my mum is so excited as she went out and bought some little vests for me - cute.

Bye x

EvieBear · 22/03/2009 19:56

PS What do you have done at antenatal check-ups (the non-scan ones) - my GP checked my blood pressure and listened to the heartbeat, but I have also read they should do a urine test - is this correct?

Beccabump · 22/03/2009 21:15

Evening ladies and Happy Mothers Day!!

Had a very eventful day here, my cough that has been awful for a week now got really bad overnight. Rang NHS Direct and because i had already used my inhalers and we are a fair distance from a hospital with an a&e dept, they sent me an ambulance!! The paramedics were lovely and DD thought it was all great fun watching them testing mummy's breathing and bp! They agreed with me that it was not asthma and managed to get a doctor to see me at the local drop in centre. She was fab and have me a total chack over, bp, blood sugars, wee test all inclusive mot I think! It seems I have a viral cough that is really irritating the top of my lungs and the more I cough the more it gets irritated - normally they'd give a cough suppresant but being preggy I can't have anything other than lots of rest and warm drinks and more rest! I have to try not to cough (haha!) and see my own doctor tomorrow as there was a tiny amount of white cells in the urine that could be an infection brewing.
So, all in all a very eventful day and I am blooming exhausted from this coughing day and night. Doc said that it should start to settle soon, keep using my inhalers and sleep as upright as possible.

EvieBear my mw usually does do a wee sample check, but not all the time - it picks up early signs of infection that can be missed by weeing more in pregnancy - these can v v v rarely set off early labour if not picked up on. Later in pg it also shows increased protein if there is any developing pre-eclampsia. I would just go armed with a sample next time and wave it at them till they test it for your own peace of mind!! Also I am getting my movements at more set times of the day now baby seems to have it's own routine - maybe that's what's happening?

shopping really getting the urge but will be doing most of it online as we live a long old way from home - will loo at the bundles of newborn stuff that goes on e-bay too, much cheaper than buying new and only wearing once! I e-bayed most of DD's stuff once she grew out of it and don't mind it so long as it's from a smoke and pet free home - I wash it when it arrives anyway

Hope everyone had a lovely day, hugs xxx

EvieBear · 23/03/2009 08:11

V funny- after posting that message about decrease in movement I had tons of movement last night and this morning so feeling better

Becca thanks for that, will get midwife to do urine tet next time I go, it sounds important to get that checked out too - silly GP!

We have booked a holiday - a week to Lanzarote leaving 18th April. GP wrote a note to say all was fine for airline. Will be week 29 when we go... Looking forward to it now.

Happy Monday!

mickeylou · 23/03/2009 10:57

hi everyone, hope you all had a lovely mother's day yesterday!! i had a great morning then came over really exhausted and threw up. just when i thought it had stopped. think the sickness will keep rearing its ugly head until i actually have this baby.

movement is getting much stronger now which is great. DH not felt it yet but he hasnt got the patience to leave his hand there long enough!! last time towards the end i used to wake him up purposely by cuddling up to his back and letting the baby kick him too. cant wait to do that again. (evil laugh!!)

little ones wardrobe is slowly but steadily filling up with little pink bits, like hats and socks - so cute. i have all the white things from DS as well so really dont need anything else.

i have been good and havent unpacked my pram. the box is far too tempting tho!!

i still cannot stop eating mango.

completely stuck on names - its actually annoying me that i havent hit on anything i really like. i have a few i think are ok but nothing grabbing me. i think the main problems is the name i do love - ruby - is so popular now and i have a friend who has already used it.

Belgrano · 23/03/2009 12:36

Hi everyone, hope you had a happy mothers day.

I got no card but a small bunch of slightly wilted flowers from the train station - bless him, he is slightly rubbish with presents!

OK two questions for you all

  1. Has anyone else got an anterior (ie. stuck on the front) placenta? I find it disconcerting and slightly scary that I hardly feel much movement. It's so deep inside when I do feel it and ususally only when I lie down. I get about 1 or 2 episodes of 'wriggling' a day (in bed normally) and other than that the odd 'thump' deep inside but nothing like the neat, consistent woodpecking I felt with DD, which was hard and un-missable and almost every hour.

2.I am addicted to Dr Pepper. I had a mad craving for Coke in the sicky early stages but limited myself to a can a day. I have decaff everything except the odd cup of caff tea. But I am LOVING full-fat Dr Pepper in the last week or two. Is 3 or 4 cans a week really bad if I also drink loads of water and juice and am definitely not in danger of dehydration?
It feels like such an unhealthy craving - I feel guilty!

Lillabet · 23/03/2009 12:49

Belgrano I have an anterior placenta and I also am finding it disconcerting that I don't feel as much movement as some people have mentioned! First few times it happened (few weeks ago now), I thought they were, ahem, digestive rumblings . Most of the major movement I feel is when I am lying down too. I did have a panic the other day when LO decided to have a very quiet day and I had convinced myself there was a problem! Then got a good kicking to remind me LO was still there

Mother's Day as this is my first I wasn't expecting anything, but got a beautiful hat box with rose plants from the LO wishing me a Happy Mother's day. See you soon xxx.
I think the DH is going soft
It was fab though .

Birth Stories - good or bad. Having read a thread on the Alpha Mummy blog on the Times Online about birth stories before I even got pregnant I guess I am fairly aware of what can go wrong (and right )and I am hoping I can just be relaxed and go with the flow - we'll see!

Mij · 23/03/2009 13:00

Belgrano I'm anterior too, and it is a bit weird feeling movement around the edges but not in the middle! Tiddler does have a habit of booting me in the cervix, which does take me by surprise - I've almost yelled out loud a couple of times!

Names Last time we had a short list, and then took a couple of days (OK, 4 days) for a name to settle on DD. I found it changed things, meeting her. We had to have a bit of a rethink.

sales went to another one on Saturday - not much there (there were three clashing ones the previous week so I think they suffered) but got a couple of great bits for DD, even though far too big she's been wearing them every since , and even a couple of maternity bits for me.

OP posts:
Belgrano · 23/03/2009 16:11

Oh my god I've got stretchmarks! I had none with DD and am only 23 weeks and there are suddenly red fine lines everywhere on my belly. [sad crying face here].
Boo hiss. Anyone else been ambushed the same?

Gillyan · 23/03/2009 17:17

blegrano I'm with you on Coke, Dr Pepper and the stretch marks I'm afraid! Greta isn't it. I keep having to clean my teeth loads as I never ususally drink full fat pop and I can feel the stickyness on my teeth!

becca glad you're feeling more movements again, I panic every now and then and think I'm not feeling as many as the day before etc. I felt the biggest one's yet last night though really high up and DP felt them to and his face nearly made me cry he was astounded.

Unfortunately I fell down the stairs this morning, I went into work then started to get really bad pains - trip to the maternity ward where they were very busy and waited 3hrs to see a doc ( although they checked babyies heartbeat after an hr and it was fine) I have sprained my groin! Been sent home and it will take 2/3weeks to heal! My boss surely must have vodoo doll of me or something and I bet she's sticking pins it right as we speak! Oh well.

micky I was so stuck for ages but sorry to say I have found one now, you'll get there!

lillabet don't let any of my ramblings on here about my bad time last time put you off. Everything will be fine for you I'm sure and for all of us it's nothing we can predict so try not to worry ( easier said than done I know )

Out of alll my friends who have had babies there have been

Normal Birth - no tears etc x 4
One was an episotomy and forceps
Planned section due to breech with no probs
planned section due to placenta praevia - no probs

activity It was just Ray when he wore that black see through top and I thought ;ooh you little saucepot' Donal is a lovely hunk of man though! So glad he got to do the balero but think ray did deserve to win.

BonzoDoodah · 23/03/2009 17:33

Hi all - had a second scan this morning as they couldn't see all of the spine last time. All seen and okay this time. Plus I asked the consultant about the stabbing pains in my lower abdomen and she assured me they were stretching ligaments and not the Casaerean scar so nothing to worry about. Hurrah!

BrumOne · 23/03/2009 17:57

Hi everyone - my first baby is due on the 17th July 09 - excited and terrified all at the same time - facin the prospect of bein a single mom!!

Lovin all the movements at the moment - its a fantastic feeling, and great seeing my belly ripple!!!

Gillyan · 23/03/2009 19:25

Glad your scan went well bonzo

Welcome and congrats to brumone I had my first baby on my own. I had split up with the 'father' before I even found out I was pregnant and just didn't want anything to do with him. He has never seen DD who is 3 now and I don't get any money or anything from him. I thought it would seem so much worse doing it on my own but it's ok isn't? You just get on with it, I was quite happy, I'm sure you'll be fine! You canhave your own way as far as names and what buggy you have etc. Have you got some support from family/friends? I have been with my DP now for 2 years and he has been Daddy to my DD since she was just over 1 and we're now expecting July 9th. Never ever thought I would even want to meet anyone let alone be so happy again

BrumOne · 23/03/2009 19:41

Hi Gillyan - thanks for that!!
Hmm I'm still struggling to get my head around things at the moment - things ended very suddenly when I was 3months, came as a big shock to me!!! The majority of my family and friends are a couple of hours away in Birmingham, but my job is here in Cardiff - so not sure how things gonna pan out!!!

He still wants to be involved with the baby and will hopefully be a good dad - jus not really reached any arrangments yet so not sure how much he gonna be around!! I cant even begin to think about meeting anyone else yet - but hopefully one day - I've never fancied an only child!!

Congrats on your second pregnancy - hope all goes well!!

QueenFee · 23/03/2009 20:10

Wlecome Brumone my family are in birmingham and when you are desperate for a nights sleep suddenly a trip down there seems highly appealing. (I am not a single mum but feel like one most of the time due to DHs long working hours ) You will be fine I have plenty of friends who are single mums and cope just fine. Just get yourself a good support network of mum friends.
Mij I did my World Health Organisation Training through the NHS who are running the scheme here. It was much simpler than the LLL training I did originally and easier to pass on I think

I had a MW appointment today and DD got to hear babies heartbeat for the first time which was lovely. Apparently baby is back to back which I have to change will be spending the rest of the eve looking up optimal feotal positioning! Better to start now than struggle to turn the mischief in the last few weeks.
My DH excelled himself on mothers day much to my suprise

Phoenix · 23/03/2009 20:20

Welcome and congrats BrumOne

I drink quite a lot of coke, always do, but i can't stop drinking it in this pg. I've just had a pint

I've just sat and eaten a bag of peanut M&M's .

I went back to work on Thursday on boring light duties, it's really boring and i can't wait to finish. I've spoke to my manager today and she says its fine for me to take my 6wk annual leave before my maternity leave. So my plan is to start mat leave from mid June (i'll be around 35wks) and take 6wks annual leave before that so i'll leave at the beginning of May

rubyriley · 23/03/2009 21:08

Hi everyone,

Haven't posted for a while as time taken up with puppy, house hunting (don't ask; we must be mad).

So, all go here and normal life has gone out of the window; have had weeks of MN to catch up on but welcome to all our new July mums to be.

My LO is kicking mostly by my bikini line (assuming breech ) but my neighbour/friend who used to be a midwife assures me that if you've had 2 previous cephalic births, then a third is most likely. Also that a skilled midwife can easily deliver a breech birth and that she would not try to turn a breech presentation as would be concerned as to the position of the cord. But I hear now that to try to turn baby has come back into fashion

Phoenix thanks for the acronym list; I'd struggled with a couple, searched the site without success {where was it), then worked them out myself but that list is very useful!

Belgrano I too have stretch marks, around my belly button despite using cream, albeit sporadically so only have myself to blame maybe.

Have found something really annoying. Why do people think it's ok to comment on the size of your bump and what exactly are they trying to say?? One friend is 35 weeks and another friend said that we had comparable bumps (bloomin cheek!!) So I thought I'd dispel that thought once and for all by standing side by side to compare bumps. Surprise, surprise, clear to all that her bump MUCH bigger than mine but so it should be as she's 11 weeks ahead!! It's like a slur when folk comment on how someone else is pg but you couldn't tell til late 20 weeks, whereas say nil re me except I look about the same as her now 35 weeks! So, how can that be when I'm measuring 26 weeks, huh?? STUPID!!

Another friend has had comments on how big she is when she hasn't yet reached 10 stone (usually around 9) and still under the ideal weight gain allowance. I'm at a loss as to why people feel the need to express their opinion (sure it's innocent and my friend and I are just being hormonal and touchy }

Off to do my duty and read Harry Potter to DS now,

Best wishes to everyone and happy shopping!
xxxxx

BrumOne · 23/03/2009 21:09

Thanks Both,

Yeah I know Brum not too far away - its jus lookin a lonely world at the minute - not wot i planned at all - but i guess wots meant to be will be - jus need to get me head in the right place for the baby's sake!!

Ive not heard my baby's heart beat yet and i'm 23 weeks - been wonderin when that might happen!!! Hopefully next time I visit the midwife!!

6 weeks annual leave sounds fantastic - i've not worked out how all that works yet!!!

Is anyone watching the Great Sperm Race on channel 4 now? It's very good!!

BrumOne · 23/03/2009 21:33

jus switched on!!

EvieBear · 23/03/2009 21:57

Oh welcome and hi BrumOne

Gillyan · 23/03/2009 22:51

Oh the sperm race program made me laugh so much 'if i was dressed a sperm' etc, the comments were well funny and the way they did it was good. I almost feel sorry for all the times the sperm has had a wasted journey when I've been on the pill. Poor little sperms! It is mazing though to think of all the stuff our bodies do without us consiously ( can't spell that ) telling them do anything.

ruby I was on the maternity ward today as fell down the stairs and needed to be checked. I was sat on a bed waiting for the doc and a MW came and asked if I had been for a walk to get things moving!!!! She thought I was there to be induced and I'm 25wks!! Cheeky cow must of thought I looked ready to pop!

mickeylou · 24/03/2009 09:02

Hi everyone,

belgrano gillyan and ruby - i have no new strechmarks so far but was gutted last time when they suddenly appeared on the front of my bump at about 36 weeks. i think its just a case of if you are going to get the bloody things you just are. neither of my sisters have a mark on them whilst my stomach has got that crepe paper type effect. it only looks ok with a tan - fake or otherwise. my mums is the same so maybe ive inherited her skin type. my tummy actually look beter now its streched out again!! ive been using bio oil this pregnancy to try to keep any more at bay.

agree that people can be so cheeky about size of bump! also ive noticed how bloody nosey people are. i have lost count of the amount of people (and i mean people i hardly know) who have asked me the sex of my baby. my nose must be growing because i just keep saying we dont know. i never ask others about the sex or their name choices. i just figure if they want to tell you they will. so why put them on the spot or force them to fib. when i'm asked about names i keep saying "well we like Harry for a boy." it is true afterall - i do like it - i'm just not having a boy.

i'm finding work quite heavy going at the moment. i'm ok until after lunch and then i could seriously do with going home to sleep and this chair is killing my back. ok whinge over!!

ps welcome brumone. my sister is a single mum of two with a small age gap and she says she prefers being on her own now as opposed to having someone there to resent when he isnt pulling his weight. have you spoke to a solicitor re registering your baby's father on the birth certificate when he or she is born and parental responsibility? sorry to put my lawyer head on but i would get a free consultation to see where you stand.

Patchybob · 24/03/2009 13:20

Welcone BrumOne, we share a due date, in fact there are quite a few of us now!!

BonzoDoodah the sale I went to was in West Sussex....are you anywhere near? I do always wonder where everyone lives.

Belgrano Mine is anterior too, I get lots of fluttering really low down and the odd little bit higher up at the sides. I wonder if my other 2 were also anterior but I don't think they can have been as I never had so little movement. You can't help but stress when you don't feel them can you.

Gillyan Poor you falling, you must have been terrified. How long are you off work for? Hope you get a chance to chill.

Went for our heart scan yesterday and all is fine. HOORAY! It took them 3/4 hour and 3 scans to tell us this so it was a bit scary but that was only because the baby was in an awkward postion. Such a relief.

Had great news today, my SIL is pregnant with her 2nd baby (number one is almost 1). We are very close so it is going to be fantastic being pregnant together. There will be 5 months between the babies so they will always have a playmate! I can't wait!

Anyway, thats me for now, hubby is away for a few days so I will get more of a chance to catch up on mumsnet while he is away!!! xx
