Hi Jonah, Just wanted to reply because you asked about the 'birth plan'. there should be a space somewhere in your blue folder to write it and also your midwife should go through it with you, but that probably wont be until about 36 weeks.

It basically is what you want, and don't want to happen at birth, assuming you have a choice.

For example, this is what mine will look like -roughly.

I'd like to use the birthing pool for as long as possible with entonox.

I'll consider an epidural if things aren't progressing well.

No pethidine/meptid under any circumstances.

Dp to deliver baby if all is going well.

Skin to skin contact with baby, don't wrap up in towels or blankets.

Am going to breastfeed so no formula to be given at all.

It's basically what is important to you. Others might put that they don't want to be naked, we had a conversation about his on the other thread. You can't cover everything, but the main points need to be written down. My birth plan was read carefully and the midwife was very careful to remember the things I had put in it, so it's worth doing.

Tea, what on earth is wrong with your plumbing??? If you'll pardon the expression!! The Specialists

Welshie, all this building and decorating is definitely nesting cobined with a feeling that after the baby comes, anything else will be impossible to achieve!!!

Lua, bloody good luck with your building work, you brave gal

Pink excellent !!! Woweee, decorating and a washer dryer I bet all that happens before my room is finished Don't get stressed on my behalf, you have enough on your plate.

Trib, I hadn't noticed the baby books being down on cloth nappies, but I haven't read any this pregnancy

Poor dp, still stuck at work

But I get to watch Corrie

charleypops · 11/04/2005 20:05

Tea - what do you know about muslin nappies?? I've read that you can use them for babies right through bfing to potty if you so wish - are they rubbish then? Will Pod leak?

Katz - does fleece made good wipes then - does it actually remove "debris" rather than just smear it around then? Are you an entomologist?? Let's hope your little one isn't an entomophobe!

Muslins are cheap - but I am cheaper! I have to try to justify spending hundreds of pounds last year on sewing machines

Trib - why on earth would the NHS do that to prospective employees? It doesn't make sense. Fingers still crossed for you! Can you make nappies from palm fronds? wouldn't they chafe?

Pink - sorry you're all achey - i'm getting periody type crampy things though too. Probably normal to help strengthen us? Well done for saving so much money Hope your mother keeps cool for you. Well done on your washing machine! I'm excited about mine too!

Coop - I've been eating chillies and curry all through this pg - according to that baby show the other night, babies in the womb can taste your food through the amniotic fluid, so he should theoretically enjoy a bit of curried bmilk I have toned the chillies down since seeing that show though because I'm worried it might sting his eyes Very about your weather today. Don't be paranoid silly! This is where we share our experiences. What would be the point of not being honest? Like you said - each to their own (including one's own!)

Jonah - I might still have your email addy from when I sent you the SPD info, I'll have a look, if I find it I'll send it straight to you, otherwise I'll CAT you.

tribpot · 11/04/2005 21:57

Charley, I was kidding about the palm fronds, but I imagine if you were going to use them you would need some kind of soft lining to go in them to prevent chafing. Perhaps made from raw cotton if there was some handy near the palm trees, perhaps shredded leaves if not. Shame Robinson Crusoe didn't take a baby with him so we would know how to keep our little ones dry in an environmentally sensitive way. Maybe they covered this in the film of The Blue Lagoon, hmmmm.

Now, I actually could make some muslins if I dig my sewing machine out of storage. The only trouble is, it weighs a ton, I'm not sure either of us has the strength to get it up the stairs. Hmm, will have a think about that. They might be easier to hand-stitch though given the lightness of the fabric. That would make me feel I've done something useful for the baby since my knitting is progressing so slowly

Our new hard disk recorder arrived today so we have been trying to get to grips with the fact we can record something off TV and watch something recorded earlier at the same time. Seems very odd somehow. Surely two IT specialists should be better able to cope with this concept!

Btw, here is my latest pregnancy nightmare: I always feel really thirsty in the evening. So drink masses of water (good), meaning I have to go to the loo practically every ten minutes - from at least 8 til 12. I decided today to maximise hydration in the morning in the hopes of staving this off but it hasn't worked, I am going to be more rigorous about it tomorrow. (Obviously one or two night-time loo trips are required as well, but this is just an extra hassle).

uwila · 11/04/2005 22:17

If anyone os still up and would like to be thoroughly amused, go here

I'm not sure if you have to have employed an au pair to appreciate the humour, but I'm quite enjoying the entertainment.

PinkArjuna · 11/04/2005 22:23

Katz - Did you baby have a really clean bum??? I am hoping I'll not have to do much nappy washing now

katzguk · 11/04/2005 22:40

i didn't use the washable with DD until about 4 months and guess i probably only chanegd her 4 times in the day then - am i a bad mummy. so two days of nappies (~8), when last one came off at bedtime about 7pm they would go in the machine wash finsihsed at about 8.30pm removed wraps from machine, shook nappies out then tumble dried for 2 hours over night ready for next morning. If i ran out i didn't worry just bunged on a disposable. DD wasn't a very pooy baby and still isn't, once a day girl!!

OP posts:
katzguk · 11/04/2005 22:41

it all depends on your baby really plus what there poo is like, if its a bit more solid and you use thicker liners (eg fleece) then if all they've done is poo you can get away with just changing the liner.

Gawd, I'm still awake! Is anybody else, who is normally fast asleep at this hour finding it difficult to get to sleep?? I know we've discussed insommnia already. I'm finding it so hard to wind down at night, my mind is racing with all the stuff going on I need some relaxation methods!!

tribpot · 11/04/2005 23:33

Yup Lippy, still awake despite having felt crappily tired all day

Off to bed now though, I think it might be time for another round of charley's name game

Cooperoo · 12/04/2005 05:18

Morning,
Hope you got to sleep eventually Lippy and Trib.
Sorry for my rambling yesterday, you know what it is like when you post something and then re-read it and think argh someone could take that the wrong way. I should use the preview but takes too long.....
Charley - Pod won't leak with a good wrap on and regular enough changes.
Kat - You must have been so organised with so few nappies. I am impressed. I have 24 size 1's and 5 medium wraps and 15 size 2's with 6 large wraps. For the bump I have bought 16 size 0's and have three small wraps but want some more wraps as dd pooed loads and was explosive to say the least. Before we moved to cloth we had to change her clothes at least once a day because she had leaked on them so I am expecting this baby to have a jet bot too and escape the nappy on occasion so I want more wraps so I can just fling them all in the wash. I won't buy any more size 0's as I don't think they will last long and with two in nappies I will be washing more often anyway as I will have a full load more quickly.
Lynny - Hope the back is better today. I posted before about feeling like I was 90 due to huffing and puffing my way up any stairs. I am blaming lack of practice as we live in a bungalow .
Right dd has finished her breakfast which is my cue to get offline and on with our day. Bye for now.

teabelly · 12/04/2005 09:26

Morning all,

Uwila - just read that thread and can't stop laughing - they think I'm mad in the office (well madder than normal! )...Good call to invite him to sunday lunch, he he he, I'd love to be a fly on the wall if they actually came (excuse the pun!)

Charley poppet I was only taking the micky about the nappies, implying 'only' a muslin wrap (no waterproof protection) - I know nothing about actual muslin nappies (or any kind of washable nappy come to that!)

Coop - re the nappy rash - yep agree 100% teething gave ds the worst nappy rash I've ever seen, red raw and bleeding bless him - definitely to do with change in acidity of wee when teething.

Lippy - plumber - don't want to bore everyone, but quick synopsis...thermo's and valves to pump water to radiator's no working, then pump failed, then electrics rewired due to amateur installer (previous owner)...all chanageable componants then failing again...leading to discovery of erroneous working of printer board = need manufacturer's speciallist to investigate...awaiting appointment - have hot water (due to emersion override switch) but have no heating in this lovely sudden cold spell - great

Pink - fab news about the washing machine/dryer - and decorating too, you lucky little bunny

I'm also getting loads of twinges, movements, and ligaments stretching in nether regions and tons of stronger braxton hicks, so will defo get clothes down from attic and wash in prep for new one, along with final sorting out of nursery this weekend...thinking being that if all prepared then baby won't come early....well that's the plan anyway!

MrsWednesday · 12/04/2005 09:33

Argh. If my computer had been working last night I would have been online with you Trib and Lippy. I am having terrible problems getting to sleep, I just can't get comfortable and also find it hard to wind down mentally (name game isn't working!).

Lua, saw an article in the Observer at the weekend about restless leg syndrome - apparently it can be down to a lack of iron. Has it got better since you started taking the tablets?

JonahB, finally watched the end of Life Begins last night...the giving birth bit at the end made me cry! Can't believe we are all going to have babies soon

Sad to say, I was lying awake thinking about posting these two snippets of information last night! These are the things keeping me awake at night...

Hope everyone is well. Cooperoo, you weren't rambling at all!

tribpot · 12/04/2005 09:37

Yes, Coop, don't worry. I was looking for someone to challenge my baby books' theory on cloth nappies. I am quite surprised that both of them have such a downer on them when they are careful to be neutral about other choices, e.g. the old breast v. bottle debate. (As I think they should).

Lua · 12/04/2005 10:09

MOrning all!

Mr.W. Interesting news about the connection betweem twitchy legs and iron. I think it has been getting better! How about yours? I am cheating a bit in the iron though because is not helping with moving "things", IYSWIM....

I've used cloth nappies with DD and found them as easy and as reliable as disposable. I know I am just cursing myself, but I don't think we had more than three leaks during the whole nappy period! We used a flanelette type of diapers, pretty cheap. I am considering buying some tot bots this time around after hearing so much about them! But I do agree with coop and Katz, different babies different nappy problems.... My tech had a baby at the same time as me, and I attest she had 6 explosives poos a day! I hope I get lucky again with DS!

welshmum · 12/04/2005 10:31

Morning all,
I'm throwing a virtual party for Pink as she's got her washing machine, have bottles on ice for Lippy when the loft is done and tea when the her plumbing is sorted out.
I have a really bad night too - just couldn't turn my head off. Am in a bad mood as a result and I know I'll spend the whole day wanting to go home. It did make me very fierce on the tube though - I just go up to the people in the priority seats and ask them to move now 'grrrr'

MrsWednesday · 12/04/2005 10:39

Good for you Welshie. I have to say, I'm not feeling the most happy and joyous person at the moment either.

Lua, I hadn't been taking my iron tablets because my midwife said my levels weren't that low, but when I read that article yesterday evening I thought I'd start straight away - anything to help me stop fidgeting at night.

Cooperoo · 12/04/2005 10:49

Hello again,
Good for you Welshie about the tube. And I am glad I am here for the party! Pass the champers. Sorry to those of you who can't sleep. I had this a while back as well as the rollercoaster hormones however seem to be having a good phase at the moment although my walking is SO VERY SLOW!!!
Mrs W - I watched all those giving birth shows on Discovery health etc when I was expecting dd and cried every time the baby was born. It is just a miracle every time. I think DH is quite grateful I don't have the access to those shows this time which is why I am getting my fix on here! .
Uwila - Finally looked at the link you posted and had a great laugh. The AP must have been mortified!! I think the poster has dealt with it well though. Very reasonable if you ask me and lol about the sunday lunch!
We have been to toddlers this morning and then for a charity coffee and cake morning (any excuse!) I then finally registered with the Education Centre to finish my European Computer Driving Licence course that I only started two and a half years ago . Before dd was born. I have three modules to do and 9 weeks to get them done (in theory) so should be OK. Stupid not to finish it as it was all paid for when I worked for the civil service. You have three years to do it in so I had better get it done. Foolishly left the harder modules to the end so I will actually have to do some work for them (access and powerpoint, things I don't use).
I am loving the fact I have a bump now. People suddenly really interested and making me feel really special. I am getting all the smiles from strangers that I feel I have missed out on which is lovely because no-one makes as much fuss the second time round.
Where is Red incidentally?
Well time to get dd down for her nap so will chat later.

katzguk · 12/04/2005 10:54

hello

midwife just left, BP fine, baby heartbeat fine just difficult to find as it went into hiding!! she thinks the baby maybe breech at the mo so she will check at next visit (36 weeks) and send me for a scan if she's still not sure. DD loves listening to the heartbeat.

OP posts:
welshmum · 12/04/2005 11:07

Glad you had a good visit Katzguk - I think I'm breech too - although I'm a bit clueless at figuring out exactly where the baby is - unless it's jumping on my pelvic floor (ouch)
Cooperoo - I know what you mean about walking slowly and I'm so pathetically grateful when I get there Blokes at work have started offering me help to get in and out of all the comfy sofas round here - I must be looking enormous!!!

Cooperoo · 12/04/2005 11:22

Oh Welshie, the relief when i get where I am going!!! Huge.
Glad all OK Kat. I have never been able to tell what position my baby is in. Even when I feel movements I can't logically work out what the baby is doing. I was very surprised when my m/w said bump was head well down as I hadn't realised and felt it was lying across me as my bump had grown so significantly in a short space of time. Clueless. I am off to make my list of things I need for this baby. Wish me luck.

Cooperoo · 12/04/2005 11:24

Kat, does your m/w come to you because you have opted for a homebirth??

welshmum · 12/04/2005 12:28

Forgot to mention the big news in our house. Dd moved up to 'big nursery class' yesterday. It all seems to have gone pretty well. She said it was 'very, very nice and kind of see-through'???

LipstickMum · 12/04/2005 13:31

Hi gals

Finally got to sleep last night!! Sorry to hear Trib and Mrs W were in the same boat.. and Welshie? I Was flicking through the tv and on channel 5 was a horrendous programme about 'live plastic surgery'. Grim is not the word!! I couldn't bear to watch it, read a bit then went back to bed at 11:45. Once I'm asleep I'm ok, I tend to sleep through with only one toilet break at 3am. There's just to much going on here atm.

I got loads done this morning though, lots of little jobs ticked off, but am exhausted after walking to town and back, bet I pass out on the couch later today

Welshie, great a bout the tube, wish I could be a fly on the wall

That thread about the au pair is pretty and hilarious I must confess, to being in a similar situation a decade or so ago To the au pair I mean!!

Right, time for more jobs
