nuttygirl oh good - so glad -right! better go put all the washing away!! I wish I had a cleaner

Hi all, interesting to read nappy discussions here! I differ from Nuttygirl and TO2C because I like the Motherease onesize (these make up the bulk of my nappy stash) and my boy was and is very tall and skinny and they did and still do fit him wonderfully! I also like the Motherease Sandys. I also like the Fuzzi Bunz for the ease of the one-piece system for grandparents and childminder! But I couldn?t get on with Tots Bots at all, the rise was far too low and his willy kept popping out the top! Now there's a story for his girlfriends!

Olivo I agree with Nuttygirl that the type of nappy that suits you will depend on your circumstances, but I also think the shape of your baby. There are different types of two-piece systems and one-piece systems; like if you like fitted nappies I have found that the Motherease are best on taller, perhaps slimmer babies (although I think TO2C disagrees with me here) and Tots Bots which is great for the cute, cuddly, rounder babies. I don?t know about Easy Peasy nappies (but they do Bimbles, Bumble and Bambeasy) but I?d say the best thing you can do is a get a feel for a load of different types by contacting your local nappy agent for a demo or even a hire kit - try the nappy finder. I offer hire kit to my local ladies so they can ?try before they buy?, because as you can see, there are loads of different types and people have different preferences!

2HotCrossBunsAnd1InTheOven?s ?One Life? nappies are a takeoff of the Motherease onesize birth-to-potty and are a good design, but the birth-to-potty are a bit bulky on a smaller baby (my DS was 5lb and half an ounce!) but he?s still in them now at over 2 and half (and yes I am trying to get him potty trained!) and they still have room in them, so economically a really good buy as they last and last.

BabyBump2B I found Bumgenius to be a good fit, but remember, as 2HotCrossBunsAnd1InTheOven said, birth-to-potty nappies are bulky on any baby under about 8lb. They fit, just they give rather big bottoms!! I think the bigger bottom is cute, it just means a bigger size pair of trousers or skirt, but some people don?t like that.

BabyBump2B and Heinz have you seen a local agent for a cloth nappy demo.

nuttygirl · 18/02/2009 14:22

LFS - yes, dd was skinny and I found Motherease the best fit on her. Admittedly I'm probably a bit harsh on the one size because I loved the sandys. I never got on with Tots Bots. Loved my Bambinex nappies, especially once she was into size 2.

Definitely agree with finding a local advisor. It's much easier to show someone how they work!

nuttygirl · 18/02/2009 14:22

Oh meant to say I think the bimbles/bumbles are a good fit for most sizes, particularly if you buy the nippa versions.

LittleFairySmile · 18/02/2009 15:05

Agree Sandys fit better, but Onesize worked out cheaper, and that was a consideration for us! Still have a couple of Sandys and they are great. They do fit even better than the Onesize!

I'm definitely thinking about buying some of the ones I haven't tried, like the Easy Peasy ones, as they got good MN reviews! Have put up a call for help on precisely this on the nappy board!

TaleofTwoCities · 18/02/2009 15:12

Re nappies, I'd agree on getting advice and trying some before you decide! So many different types and babies different shapes and sizes. My children are short , maybe that's why the Motherease onesize didn't suit as well. I still use them though and tbh, they don't leak, that's the main thing and they are nice and slim so you can boost them with extra pads (for when you have a toddler with big wees!!) without them getting too bulky. I can feel myself getting quite excited about trying out some new types for my next little one now!! The nappy thing is way more exciting for cute little newborns than for toddlers!

nuttygirl · 18/02/2009 15:18

I sell Easy Peasy ones. They do an Eco Bumble which is just £3 (it doesn't have booster) which is great if you already have boosters.

olivo · 18/02/2009 15:27

wow, i didnt realise there were so many types and designs etc - but it seems as if i'm in safe hands with you ladies! i think my first step will have to be to see what is on sale around here. I'm not in the UK and some internet won't deliver here so will have to make sure i can get supplies. thanks for your help everyone, i'll get back to you at some point on them.
has anyone who uses reusables used them at nursery? I assume nurseries don't have an issue with them on the whole? I am going to speak to dd's nursery about a place for the baby, once, hopefully, I have seen all is well at my scan on friday so i'll ask then.

trying to catch up on work and housework today as it's the first time i don't feel too bad!

nuttygirl · 18/02/2009 17:18

Mw just gone - she got here about 3.30 . Got to hear heartbeat...just. Naughty baby was hiding, took mw 10 mins to find heartbeat and then it hid again about 5 seconds later!

BabyBump2B · 18/02/2009 18:55

I actually work for a magazine and we've done a feature on cloth diapers and had them explained to us, demo'd etc. Here in Canada we're more limited on brands (a lot of people think using cloth diapers is an insane choice!).

We were planning on using newborn disposables for the first 2 - 4 weeks before moving into the Bumgenius because of the fit issues. Am also thinking of using biodegradable rice paper inserts - has anyone ever done that?

First day without waking up with a headache in a week so feeling very chipper and useful today!

cairns · 18/02/2009 20:11

Thought I'd join in on the nappy debate Another cloth nappy user here. Agree it all depends on the size and shape of your little one. I left it about 2-3mths before starting using cloth (all the icky meconium poos where done in disposables) and then trialled quite a few before deciding what was best (for me for ease of use and fit for DS). I actually only converted because DS was prone to nappy rash and I wanted to give them a try and they did the job and have used them ever since.

Given DS was quite a large baby (9lb8)(and still is a large toddler) I found the bamboo nappies to be better as they are a lot thinner as we struggled to get any clothes to fit him over the top of them if we tried another type. I trialled both totsbots and little lambs and found little lambs to be better for us (and cheaper and came in a kit which was great), but I use the motherease wraps and not the ones supplied by little lambs.
My advice is wait a bit to see what you might like and then do some trials, I think most nappy companies can offer you 1 nappy or so to trial first

cairns · 18/02/2009 20:13

ah sorry Babybump2b. I also trialled a number of liners but for us, found the washable fleece ones the best and easiest to use as you can just stick them in the wash with the nappies

LittleFairySmile · 18/02/2009 21:02

olivo my nursery and childminder both had no prob. at all with cloth nappies. They put the wet/soiled nappies inside a 'normal' plastic wet nappy bag (I think they felt comfortable with that) and then put them all in a drawstring wet nappy bag I provided. I did make sure I had some disposables in the bag too, just in case, but they were only ever used after they had got through all the cloth nappies when he was having a bad tummy day! If you provide them, usually they have no prob. with them, IMO! Not sure what the other ladies have experienced. There is a whole topic for nappies and potty training for just such discussions!

valz · 19/02/2009 13:56

Hi Ladies

My hubby cant hold his piss, we had agreed and reagreed only yesterday we wouldn't anounce to anyone until 16 weeks, end of this month... then i get a call from his sis congratulating me just now, im relieved yet a bit mad, im really close to his sis and had told him about a week ago i felt bad not telling her cuz i had so many chances. but he said that if you tell one person as a secret then they tell someone as a secret then everyone knows but thinks its a secret and its never a secret so he insisted on leaving it that only our parents knew and leave it at that. It just proves men are the weaker species.

HunnyBunnyAug09 · 19/02/2009 14:13

Valz - they definitely are, but we love em anyway don't we?!
x

readyfornumber2and3 · 19/02/2009 14:36

Hi all x

Had my 1st appointment with the consultant today and she is happy with everything, she did my nuchal scan and one twin is at a higher risk than the other but neither are in the guideline danger zone so I am really happy about that
It was good to see them both again (3rd time in 2 weeks lol) and it made me laugh because one was kicking the other in the back and making it jump lol.

I now have to see the mw at 16 and 22 weeks, then see the consultant again at 24 weeks and then 2-4 weekly scans for growth after that!

I was going to try reusables until I found out it was twins! I havent got a tumble dryer and very limited radiator space so I would never keep up with all the washing!

Hope you are all ok x

Hi ready how many weeks are you? they never mentioned an nt scan to me, is it different from the big 20 week scan? i dont have to go back for another 6 weeks which i thought was a bit odd for a twin pregnancy. its great seeing them isnt it?

leinin congrats on your scan going well, lucky you headin on hols!!

readyfornumber2and3 · 19/02/2009 15:51

Hi Valz I am 13 weeks today, I hadnt planned to have nt but she said she could do it there and then!
The 20 week scan is alot more detailed and can tell you alot more than the nt which gives you a risk factor.

Have you been referred to a consultant yet? I have to have consultant led care due to carrying twins.
I see the midwife in 3 weeks for general checks (bp, heartbeat etc)

Where do you live? because your care seems very different to mine

TaleofTwoCities · 19/02/2009 16:36

Pregnancy brain here today. Went swimming, got both dcs out of their clothes then realised had forgotten the swim nappy for dd. So had to get them dressed and all the way back to reception, join the queue again and buy one. I managed to keep my cool just. Then to top it off realised that male boss from work was just in front of us in the queue with his kids. Kept head down, bought the nappy and managed to avoid eye contact. Luckily he went in the big pool so we didn't actually meet. Meeting colleagues in swimwear, whilst pregnant aaahhh!!

nuttygirl · 19/02/2009 17:53

Probably won't be on again until after the weekend - off to ILs tomorrow (Oh joy ). MIL is being a pita cos dd is "a fussy eater". It's doing my head in cos she keeps going on about how dd's cousin will eat anything she makes and it's terrible that dd doesn't eat fish...she has NEVER made fish for us . If she's made fish I might throw the bloody thing at her .

Baby brain is making it difficult to remember what we need to pack - not least because we don't need half the stuff we'd usually take (dd now in a bed, potty trained, etc.)

Got some good news today though. Dh is getting a bonus this month. Weren't expecting it tbh cos his company have just made 2 people redundant and said there'd be no pay rises, etc. Means we can buy the birth pool and it's one less thing to worry about getting.

ScummyMummy · 19/02/2009 18:39

That's good news on the bonus, nutty. Hope mil has a good weekend for you- I bet she tells the cousin's parents how fab dd is and annoys the pants off them too!

Glad to hear about everyone's good scan news as well.

LittleFairySmile · 19/02/2009 19:46

readyfornumber2and3 a few of my friends with twins have said that to use cloth nappies part-time (not all the time) saved them a lot of money on disposables. One friend used terry squares at home (not out and about) as they were a cheaper option and they dry really quickly. Another used some pocket nappies because they were the easiest and most like disposables. It doesn?t have to be all or nothing. A few cloth nappies can save you a fair bit of money, and you can wash them with towels/bed linen/other clothes and not in a separate wash if you put a bit of nappy soak in a prewash with them. Just a thought. Don?t give up on the cloth!!

Good news on the bonus nutty, hope all goes well as IL.

Saw MW today, and heard heartbeat, fast and strong. Was great to hear! Hubby was working from home today so was here to hear too!

readyfornumber2and3 · 19/02/2009 19:56

LittleFairySmile - I hadnt considered that but its a very good idea
Thanks will look into it because otherwise I may be hugely responsible for destroying the environment lol

Is anyone else planning on going to the babyshow this year?
Our nearest will be the NEC in may (will be massive by then though lol) I fancy a good nose at the latest gadgets lol

olivo · 19/02/2009 20:12

nutty, good news about being able to get the birthing pool, enjoy our weekend.
littlefairy, i like the idea of using both cloth and disposable nappies, must try to remember that.
well, my first scan tomorrow, am really nervous . should be 13 weeks exactly....
