Hmm....we'll need a new thread title soon!

FiKelly · 04/02/2009 22:19

MatthewAndBumpsMummy did your ds decide on his own another baby is ok? or what did you try to get him 'on board'? our ds is still saying 'no baby' but is also interested in hearing the heartbeat at app with mw...

flippineck · 04/02/2009 22:21

divedaisy - that does seem like a good deal. Don't forget you'll need the wraps (covers) too. MotherEase are generally accepted to be among the best and easy to get hold of new or secondhand. They come with velcro or popper fastening, both are good.

Boosters are pads to add extra absorbency to any nappy , fleece liners aren't absorbent but wick moisture away from LOs skin and make poo removal easier. You can make your own very easily - just cut up old fleece blankets! Disposable liners are good for getting rid of poo (all flushed away) and if they're just wet then bin them.

FiKelly · 04/02/2009 22:23

I didn't recover v well... but that was more to do with the anaemia from the PPH after the cs than the op. The cs itself was straightforward and i too needed anti-biotics for minor infection... those parts don't worry me. I just want to be told if i do an elective cs i won't have another pph and not remember the 5/6 hours after and miss the time with dh and #2. I would really like to be awake when doing the first 2 breast feeds afterwards this time...

flippineck · 04/02/2009 22:24

lol FiKelly - I have a belly button that you could hide a whole meal in! Didn't pop out with DD, no sign of it happening this time either.

Jennster · 04/02/2009 22:32

Gees we've nearly filled the thead again!

Just wanted to put my nappy experience into the mix. With DD who was tiny, I only had OneLife birth to potty which were enormous on her, and ended up not using them until she was about 3 months old. With DS I got 20 large muslins with small wraps and folded them like you would a flat terry nappy. The origami fold. They were absolutely brilliant and used them from the first week. No liner needed on newborn poo, no nappy nippa or pin needed, just the muslin and the wrap. By 3 or 4 months ds was in the birth to potty nappies.

fikelly to be honest I think there are some things I have blanked out from my mind. I don't remember the first night at all and I've no idea who looked after DS. I was awake for the op but I think out of it all night. I was in a lot of pain afterwards and when I asked for pain relief the nurse/midwife told me I didn't need any! I tell you, it was more pain than I'd ever experienced.

The only thing that bothers me about the c-section is having to spend more time in hospital. I hated it. So it could be that I hated the hospital stay more than the c-section, if you see what I mean.

Like you I wanted to be told to have a c-section, and that is pretty much what happened. The consultant told me that I might have to have one and I responded positively so we agreed on that. Not sure what I would have done with a choice....

Jennster · 04/02/2009 22:36

Made a trifle for pudding this evening and there is a third of it left......Which means trifle for breakfast. Bliss.

Welcome to my pain, divedaisy... As far as I know prefolds are just literally that - squares with a fold in them already to make folding easier? I think. I found this website www.kittykins.co.uk and it has a useful section on prefolds. I think you use them a bit like shaped nappies, ie you add any extra layers inside and you cover them with a waterproof wrap/ layer. You do them up with pins or nippas like the terry cloths.

Thanks rek - I'l check those out for sure, it sounds like your criteria and mine are the same. I think maybe between what you and flippineck have said perhaps it makes to sense to make a shortlist of a few types and try them out. Anyone got a baby I can borrow? At least I don't have to decide for a few months yet. I'm still staggered by the overload of info out there.

Llareggub good for you - I'd fight that one too. I too am nervous about hospital policy when dealing with - gosh, is there a category? I have appointments next week with two different consultants to discuss "risk management" - am very nervous that my handicap (which should have no bearing on my ability to labour) will mean all sorts of unnecessary intervention.

When you have your monthly scans Llareggub - is it really obvious the sex of your baby? I'm going for those extra scans (the ones no one knows why I'm having, and in spite of much research still no idea what higher hcg has to do with anything) and although we had not planned to know the sex, I wonder if it will be hard not to see it? Seems a bit silly if it gets to the point where we have to go out of our way to avoid finding out.

FiKelly · 04/02/2009 22:42

llaregub... my neighbour who had an emergency cs 1st time & an elective 2nd time said she'd discovered they give morphine as the pain releif after a cs as standard... so 2nd time around she asked for codine/paracetamol instead. They apparently looked aghast of the thought of no morphine but she says she was with it the whole time after and remembers it all... wondering if that's what happened to me? it's a question for my next meeting with the consultant as they should have my previous notes by then...

Polony · 04/02/2009 22:54

Sorry i don't know how i got so behind on the nappy thing.

FiKelly · 04/02/2009 22:56

brrr got to face the cold outside... have to take dog out to garden for a wee. Don't think he'll be long... he's a bit of a girls blouse these days!

sausagenmash · 04/02/2009 23:00

AAARRRRGGGHHH I'M GETTING SOOOO CONFUSED!!! Or maybe I'm just tired?! I don't get it, I don't get it! Wraps, liners, boosters, prefolds, squares, bamboo, terry..... I have absolutely NO idea what anyone is saying. Don't want to leave this thread, but I'm not understanding a thing, and am feeling really thick and very un-new-mum-ish

Can anyone direct me to the idiots guide to nappies?

Polony · 04/02/2009 23:03

That website I mentioned saus - its up the page a bit, www.kittykins.co.uk

FiKelly · 04/02/2009 23:04

this site is good www.twinkleontheweb.co.uk/choosing_using.htm

Polony · 04/02/2009 23:04

You're not thick (or if you are I am). Its a jungle out there.

FiKelly · 04/02/2009 23:05

and this quiz may help figure out 'your type' www.chooseanappy.co.uk/

FiKelly · 04/02/2009 23:06

I too was completely confuddled when looking into it for ds... 2yrs on i'm ok with it now!!

pulapula · 04/02/2009 23:16

Fikelly- i didn't have any morphine with my planned c-section and was wide awake after and first bf was great, so maybe they did give u some? definitely worth checking on your notes.

With my last planned c-section i got fed up of having to explain why i was having a section (after a "normal" delivery 1st time) and also kind of hoped LO would stay breach (he was at 34 weeks) so that my decision was justified.

My only worries this time with my cs are 1) DH can't have 6 weeks off work again to help me and 2) I have 2 toddlers to entertain as well as a newborn, and although the cs was a wonderful experience, i couldn't lift/bend for a few weeks and DS will be younger than DD was (23 months rather than 2.6) so he won't understand as much about why he can't jump on mummy's tummy etc.

Llareggub- my stay was less with my cs than my normal delivery, so you never can tell. And i got my own room with ensuite after the first night. The stay gave me chance to bond with LO with DD just popping in every evening for a visit (although she did play up a bit). With my first I discharged myself after 5 days as I was in a 4-bed ward and just couldn't sleep with all the crying babies- not a good experience.

FiKelly · 04/02/2009 23:22

ahh that's interesting pulapula. I'm ok with the dh bit... he's planning 8wks off when #2 arrives... i'm trying to get ds (2.5) used to the idea of me not lifting him at the mo as i've been having back probs... when he says 'carry?' i say 'no darling you're too heavy for mummy with the baby' and he shoulder shrugs... goes [whine] hokaaay and accepts it... with dh he's in his element as of course he just gives in and he gets carried

pulapula · 04/02/2009 23:29

I must go to bed- DH is snoring away...night night all.

I had a quick look at that nappy quiz fikelly but the ones it threw up were all very different and didn't seem to match my preferences so i'm none the wiser...think i will stick to disposables. I didn't feel too bad with DD as she was potty trained early so didn't need that many nappies, but DS is still a regular user. As we recycle everything we can and have a compost bin, our household rubbish mainly consists of nappies .

pulapula · 04/02/2009 23:32

Just remembered I do have a friend who has a set of reusable nappies and never used them, so might see if i can borrow hers and have a go and see what i think...

FiKelly · 04/02/2009 23:44

i'm off to bed too... night night xoxox

llareggub · 05/02/2009 06:41

polony Don't worry, it isn't obvious (to me anyway) what sex the baby is, and I know mine is a boy! As the baby gets bigger you see less anyway, I remember being really disappointed at the 34 week scan last time as the baby takes up so much of the screen there is nothing to see.

I'll try and avoid morphine next time, and go for a combination of paracetamol and codiene I think.

We have lots and lots of snow this morning!

runningmonkey · 05/02/2009 07:42

Morning ladies loads of snow today so school is shut sounds like the roads by us are chaos so am glad I don't have to drive tbh.

Have just read thro the thread and wanted to say thanks for the nappy stuff on the advice of a friend I'm going to use bamboo disposables in the first few weeks then go onto reusables. I'm looking at the pop-in (think they used to be called modern baby) as they seem quite sensible but have also heard v good things about the totsbots ones. Am going to use my snow day wisely to look at eBay etc and buy a couple of diff types.

Oh yeah and by the way, who mentioned cake... None in the house and I want some now!!
