Thought I'd better start this soon.

Pre folds as far as i'm aware need assembled... you put the booster on it (if required) and liner... pop onto LO then pop the waterproof cover on after that. Pocket nappies are usually all-in-one types like disposables... they have the waterproof cover outer attached to the inner shaped nappy... with a small opening at the top of the back of the nappy that you use to stuff your chosen absorb-able pad into it. It goes on in one go usually and fastens usually with poppers or velcro.

flippineck · 04/02/2009 21:29

divedaisy prefolds have separate covers. They're fairly basic, several layers of fabric stitched together, that you just fold as required and place inside the cover - the cover then holds everything in place. You can get some nappies that are all in ones (Kushies I think are one) but they tend to be less popular because they take longer the dry. Two parters are shaped nappies that fasten with velcro/poppers/pins etc then you put thw waterproof cover over. Pockets are waterproof covers with pocket (no, really!) that you then stuff with whatever you like to provide the absorbency required.

flippineck · 04/02/2009 21:31

Fikelly beat me to it, and with fewer typos!

FiKelly · 04/02/2009 21:32

flippineck i do the dry pail method too... so easy. i bought a big bottle of tea tree oil too but have hardly used it at all. I found re-useables weren't nearly as hard work as i'd thought to use but i do use disposables if we're out for the day to save me having to carry dirty nappies around with me & then home...

CoteDAzur · 04/02/2009 21:40

Hi everyone. I had my monthly check-up at hospital today. All good. 24 weeks and I've put on +5 kgs. Very proud of myself. So sitting here now with a box of double chocolate chunk cookies

Meanwhile, both the midwife and the psychologist I cried spoke to have gone and talked to my doctor. He said (1) he can't guarantee I won't have an episiotomy, (2) there is 50% chance I will have an episiotomy last time, because I had one last time (there is scar tissue there) (3) he will do a c-section if baby is close to or over 4 kgs (4) he hasn't decided yet if my (deteriorating) mental state constitutes an indication for a c-section even if baby is between 3.3-3.8 kgs - i.e. a 'normal' size baby

Oh happy days

divedaisy · 04/02/2009 21:40

How many nappies and parts would you need for a new born?
I think I understand you would need 3-4 'wraps' (the outer waterproof bit - yes??) But how many nappies and reusable inner liner/booster-thingys are required? If a new born needs 8-10 nappies per day, how many days do you cater for??? Even catering for 2 days is a lot of nappy (about 20 needed), when they sell from £3 (used)- £9 (new)per nappy! Then I have to decide if I tumbel-dry or air dry - and I would 'feel better' air drying which could take a few days also! So if it took 3 days to air dry I'd need about 30 to work on a rolling stock of 10 available with a further 20 at various stages of dryness - and that's if I do a wash every day of all the nappies! Is this a fair calculation for all you ladies out there with reusable experience?? Then can you use disposable liners on top of all this too? Oh my head - I'm confused by all this! Away to bed with a cuppa tea and my book! MAybe I'll dream the answer to all this nappy talk!

Nite nite all. xx

FiKelly · 04/02/2009 21:40

there are loads of pocket nappies... and if you're wanting quick drying ones... the ones lined with polar fleece are really quick drying. The polar fleece lets the wee through to the absorbent pad but it doesn't absorb it itself so no wet fabric right next to babies bum. The outers are breatheable & waterproof... you can get bamboo, hemp, microfibre or cotton pads to stuff them with.... they look like this

FiKelly · 04/02/2009 21:49

divedaisy... how many you'll need does depend on how often you plan to wash them & drying time. remember they don't need to go in the machine on their own... you can make up a load with other whites/pales (the nappy sanitiser powder can bleach colours a bit).

CoteDAzur... snap with the weight gain... i'm also 5kilos/11lbs at 25+4wks. I hope you don't have to have an episiotomy... did they say if doing the vit e/veg oil perineal massage would make a difference?

CoteDAzur · 04/02/2009 21:52

My doctor thinks perineal massage does nothing

FiKelly · 04/02/2009 21:55

hmm... maybe this is a good question for belgianchocolates? is it worth doing or not? I was wondering about it myself... incase i pluck up the nerve to actually do VBAC

CoteDAzur · 04/02/2009 21:57

Don't do it FiKelly

flippineck · 04/02/2009 21:58

We used disposbale for a few weeks as M was too small for the nappies we got, then we tried the different nappies we'd got, decided what to buy more of and started nealry full time with cloth when she was about 4 or 5 weeks old.

I think we've got 5 of the smallest wraps (yes, plastic covers - fasten with velcro rather than being like pants) and about 20 (possibly a few more, can't remember) shaped nappies that also fasten with velcro. In the early days I think we washed about every 1.5 days, but this did settle down at around 4 months I think to every two days (or when the bucket got full!). None of our nappies take 3 days to air dry, it's more like 24 hours at line/room temperature, or less than 12 on the radiator. We use disposable liners as DH doesn't like dealing with poo (!) but that's the only reason - they don't add anything to the absorbency/comfort of the nappy. They're about £2 for a roll of 200 I think, the wraps were about £5, and the nappies were about £6 each I think. the size 1s lasted DD a year, and they'll get used for the next one too - more than earned their keep I think!

I should also say that I'm not completely anti-disposable! We do use disposables if we haven't managed for whatever reason to get nappies dry (rare now we're in the habit), when we go on holiday etc. It's really not the end of the world if you do use disposables at times, just think that every time you use a cloth nappy it's one less disposable, that's all.

Cote - sounds like your appointment has really helped all that much.

MatthewAndBumpsMummy · 04/02/2009 21:58

hi all,

wow theres so much that goes on on here i do try and keep up, so sorry if i dont answer any questions and things but its prob just coz ive missed them!

saw midwife yesterday and everything was fine, heard heartbeat lovely this time really loud and clear which was nice coz didnt hear it very well last time as he kept trying to hide and was moving around to much.

im feeling loads of movements now which is ovely and very exciting makes it seem all the more feel like theres actually a lil person in there

DS finally seems to be coming round to the idea of a new baby coming along, he doesnt tell me everyday now not to have one so it seems like its improving slightly. we try and talk to him about it a lil bit just to get him used to the idea but also dont wanna go on about it to much either coz that might put him off wanting one. he says he likes babys and he would want a lil brother but he doesnt want me to have one coz my tummy will get ripped! bless him.

havent started buying anything yet, starting to think i better get going with all this talk about prams and nanny bags ect.. but we dont really need to get much coz we kept all of ds's things pram, car seat, cot, clothers ect.. just need to get new feeding items and new blankets and towels things like that really and a few new clothes coz do want this ds to have some new things of his own.

still on the anti sickness tabs everyday but they seem to be working well, still wake up feeling sick and ill but take and tab and eat something then im normally ok for rest of the day just extrememly tired all the time, find it really difficult to get up before 10am (luckily i dont work, and dh does shift work so is home quite alot during the day which is such a great help dont think id manage otherwise) and still just feel exhausted all day and am ready for bed by 9pm.

been craving coca cola like mad drinking loads of it, but started gettng headaches everyday so have laid off it today to see if thats whats giving me them. went to the sweet shop today and got loads! im really liking sour things at the mo but dont really know if thats a craving coz ive always really liked that anyway.

well i think thats enought from me sorry for the long post. hope everyone is well and really liking the fact that we are all over half way now how exciting! cant wait still seems like ages away but im sure its all gonne happen before we know it!

CoteDAzur · 04/02/2009 21:58

VBAC, I mean.

flippineck · 04/02/2009 22:00

Cote - that should be hasn't helped all that much, of course. Must preview more!

CoteDAzur · 04/02/2009 22:04

It was just a routine monthly check-up. Here obstetricians do them, not midwives.

He is a good doctor, and caring - which is very rare around these parts. But very set in his ways. Women have to deliver on their backs, feet in stirrups and all that. Lots going my way to prevent another episiotomy, then

divedaisy · 04/02/2009 22:07

Thank you for all this advice. I have browsed The Used Nappy Company auction and have bought:
"15 Bambineo bamboo nappies size 1

1 TotBot bamboo nappy size 1 which we ordered as a tester and preferred Bambineo for lots of reason

15 Bambineo bamboo soakers / booster tabs - fold at the front for boys, back for girls

4 additional Bambineo boosters

9 fleece reusable nappy liners - just flush the poo away and wash for ultimate environmental friendliness

2 rolls of paper liners - the remainder of what we haven't used so don't know exactly how many sheets

one nappy pail for storage / pre soaking" and wraps for £59.99 +£7.99 p&p.

I thought this was a great deal??

THough I am not too sure what the difference is between the boosters and reuable liners is!! I will find out in the next few days when it arrives in the post!

FiKelly · 04/02/2009 22:08

CoteDAzur interesting that you've said don't do it... i was very pro vbac a month or 2 ago... and now i'm veering more to elective CS... as everyone tells me an elective one is much easier than an emergency one. but i'm extremely dodgy with all anaesthetics... even the spinal last time had me unconscious afterwards for 5/6hrs... unless it was the pain relief they gave me? as i was awake but vommy through the cs itself. do you know i'm half hopping LO is breech so the decision gets made for me!

Momino · 04/02/2009 22:09

hi all, just read through the last few pages and now want cake too. but don't have any .

has anyone's belly button pushed out? Mine has but isn't 6 mos a bit early for this? I swear I'm much bigger than I was with my other two. Either it's just because baby is bigger or maybe because it's 3rd pregnancy . I've had a lot of comments (annoyingly) about how big I am. Are boys bigger? could I be having a boy?

divedaisy, i looked on the thread link you posted earlier (not that I can help I'm afraid). I'm panicking slightly about my dwindling salary and am afraid that I will be stuck with a lower-than-standard MP for the time I'm off. I thought I'd read somewhere that mat pay is based on a set time of 8 weeks up to the 15th week before EDD... don't know if this is correct.

looks like my SMP will be a surprise then, much like my monthly salary.

time for bed. thought i'd force my insomnia into a corner and sleep for a change. that is, if baby doesn't jump around too much!

llareggub · 04/02/2009 22:10

I'm also pleased about my planned c-section. I flirted (briefly) with the idea of a VBAC but I think I always knew I'd opt for the c-section!

FiKelly · 04/02/2009 22:11

divedaisy the liners don't absorb anything they're just there to catch poo & line nappy to keep baby's bot from wet bits. The pads do all the absorbing of wee... and when newborn sometimes some of their poo too... depending on the pad!

FiKelly · 04/02/2009 22:14

any cs is a scary thought for me as my last was err not great afterwards (understatement) the op was a doddle though so maybe i'd be ok?

divedaisy · 04/02/2009 22:15

Matthewandbumpsmum - great to see you back! Can't believe you are still feeling so ill - poor you , but at least the tablets are helping a bit. I too am exhausted and if it wasn't for mumsnet and nappy talk this evening I'd've been in bed an hour ago! Anyhow I think I am pleased wiht my napy purchase and hope it is as OK to use as you all say! I'll be backing them up with huggies!!!

Going to bed NOW!! If anyone sees me on here again to night please shout at me to get to bed!!! x

FiKelly · 04/02/2009 22:16

momino... my belly button is cavernous in its inny type... will take a lot to make this go outy. if anything it's a bigger inny than it started out... i could hide a multitude of baked beans in it at the moment!!?!

llareggub · 04/02/2009 22:18

I recovered really well, and was able to drive after 3 or 4 weeks or so. I did get an infection but the antibiotics cured that. I've had a lapropscopy and a hycosy previously and to be honest the c-section was no more painful. It was frustrating to be on my back for 24 hours but I think I probably should have tried moving around sooner than I did. The catheter was a real surprise though!
