Here's the new thread. Hope you'll find it. There is probably a more up-to-date list of us all at some point in the thread, but I couldn't find it. The newbies will have to add themselves on....

chocciedooby · 11/01/2009 11:41

Morning everyone.
Been lots to read on here lately!

MrsMc Friends of mine use a Phil and Teds and love it. I used a M&P Twin Aria when DS's were smaller and it was also great although sometimes a little difficult to manoeuvre through standard doorways. Very light and easy to fold though so very handy.

Used a nappy bin with DS1 but dumped it afterwards. Could not stand the smell of it tbh and preferred to dump nappies straight into bin outside. I suppose a bit of Febreze might help with that problem though .

My rash has gone down a bit now so not too concerned after reading that it is quite common and that is hormonal. I will however mention it at my next appt.and thank you so much for your concern.
June2009 It's only really my palms that have itched. They have also peeled a little but my hands always get very dry this time of the year so maybe I just need to keep putting on a good handcream. Make sure you get your itch checked out at next appt. too just to be on the safe side.

I do believe that every pregnancy and every child birth experience is different. My first birth was quite long and painful as I was not dilating for hours and when I did it was very slow. I did have Pethidin and eventually an epidural and it was then a breeze. I would say to anyone having a first time baby, keep an open mind. I also had an open mind with DC2 and it was so much easier second time around.I dilated much more quickly and instead of pushing for 1.5 hours I pushed for ten minutes! The contractions were much more intense than the 1st time but hey, we can't have it all ways! I am a little nervous 3rd time round as have heard that 3rd births can be the hardest ??!!Again I will keep an open mind and try to go as far as I can without pain relief.

Sorry for me me post. Just wanted to give my honest experience.

chocciedooby · 11/01/2009 11:43

Forgot to say that I did have an epidural the 2nd time round as well. My pain threshold is very low

ermintrude13 · 11/01/2009 13:14

choccie, aargh, don't say that about 3rd births! People keep saying that the weights of babies go up each time too and that's a worry since my DD was 7lb 8oz and DS was 9lb 7oz ... I'd rather not go up from there, esp since second stage with DD was 16 mins and with DD only 2 mins!

Feeling the contractions getting more intense, knowing you're dilating steadily and maintaining that idea of progress really does make the difference to what kind of pain relief or other help you require. For one thing, the longer it goes on the more tired you become and the harder it is to push - after days of little contractions, hence making sleep difficult - my poor sister was in full labour for over 12 hrs before she dilated fully and then the second stage went on for more than 2 hours and she had to be transferred from home to hospital. She wasn't in great pain; she just wanted to go to sleep. It was only when the m/w said 'The doctor's on his way' and she imagined him walking up the corridor carrying forceps and ventouse that she managed to summon one final almight push and get the baby out before he arrived!

Nemoandthefishes · 11/01/2009 13:21

ermintrude weights dont have to go up..ds was 9lb1 then both dds were 6lb14 so like little dolls compared to ds yet Ds birth was by fair the easiest and quickest!!!!

ermintrude13 · 11/01/2009 13:30

Nemo thank you, that's good to know - although as you say, lower weight doesn't mean easier birth. I'd still rather not land a ten pounder though!

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 11/01/2009 14:10

Any of you guys used a sling with a new born before? I've got a BabyBjorn that I used with DS for out and about stuff, but I'd love one I could BF in if I wanted to. DS will be 2.5 and I want to be as mobile and active as I can be and also not worry about him feeding lego bricks into newborn's mouth if I go out of the room to go to the loo. Any advice? I've read a few threads on here and they talk about the 'Close' baby carrier and some others. They all look a bit of a faff to be honest so some advice would be much appreciated.

I guess, at the end of the day, some of us may be lucky and have 'easy' births, some will have painful average length births and some of us will be in utter agony. It's kind of an individual thing isn't it and we have absolutely no idea of what will happen. All we can hope is that, we do the best, all things considering and a gorgeous little baby appears healthy and happy.

I had a relatively quick first birth - of all my friends, the quickest first birth with just TENS and gas & air...and even then I was threatening to slit my wrists if they didn't 'take it out of me right now' and also thought threatening to jump out the window might help. Luckily only dh heard these pleas as the midwives were having a shift change.

You both have good points to make - ermintrude that in some cases birth may be easier than woman expect and cote that for many it ranges from bloody hard to sheer hell (or that's the general picture). Please let it drop, not everyone's opinions will be everyone else's cup of tea but it's good to hear a wide spectrum of opinions, and we really need you both on this site.

mrsmcjnr - that site is great. It is surprising how putting a few of my favourite names in to the inspiration list, does prompt a whole lot of really nice names. That's a shame your Dad's book wasn't published. May I ask what it was about?

My nappy bin was rubbish and smelt so I ended just taking them outside immediately, but I would like to find a better one if anyone has any good experiences.

Tee2072 · 11/01/2009 15:52

The best diaper pail I have ever seen is the Diaper Genie, but it doesn't seem to be available here in the UK. I am so bummed about that!

Tee2072 · 11/01/2009 15:53

Sorry, just did some research, its the Sangenic System in the UK! Now I'm stoked!

queenofpuddings · 11/01/2009 18:50

thanks for adding me onto the list whoever did so

MrsMcJnr · 11/01/2009 19:25

Ugggh, a very sick day here, maybe I got overtired yesterday or didn?t eat enough but I spent the whole morning throwing up and I thought those days were starting to come to an end!

Thank you all for your buggy recommendations, I shall look into the ones mentioned, any others?

Ermintrude ? LOL at Bill & Teds I know what you mean!

Thanks also for the tips on the nappy wrappers. We currently use nappy sacks and take the rubbish out every time we go out but in this climate and especially in the summer it?s just not enough especially as we live in a small place and it?ll be much worse with 2 babies. You can?t buy nappy sacks here either so I have to get them sent from the UK. Spain amazes me sometimes, I used to think it was so child friendly but now that I am here with one I think otherwise. Clothes are so expensive, the range of weaning products is very slim, there are hardly any places to change your baby out and about and if there is somewhere it stinks because all the nappies are just left as they are and not bagged. Cote, is it different in France?

Cote ? you were lucky that your DD went back to you after using the protectors, my DS never did even though a lovely MW tried with me many times, in the end I just had to use the protectors until I stopped BFing which was a bit of a nuisance as I found it hard to be discreet using them, I so hope that things will be different this time round. I think my nipples are too flat, that said, they seem to protrude more now I have fed one baby so maybe that isn?t an issue any more

June ? I?ve heard about the itchy skin and know it?s quite common in pregnancy and must be very annoying. I have dry skin anyway and was very diligent with my Clarins oil last time round (used it morning and night) I had no itching and got no stretch marks (though I know that some of that was down to good luck) this time round, being a stay at home Mum with a lot less cash, I am just using oil in the morning and I do find my skin dry by the evening. A friend bought me Neutrogena?s sesame oil, it?s lovely. I haven?t got the red freckles you mention but did notice last time that I got a whole lot of skin tags. I find that I am eating a lot of carbs too but they are the only thing that takes the nausea away.

Ineedmore ? I bought a sling last time, a karrime(?) and was given a baby bjorn and also a ring sling (which I don?t know how to work ) I tried to use them all with DS. I think the fact that it was so cold in Scotland when he was born didn?t help and then in the summer here it was too hot. I would like to use a sling as I have some of the concerns you have (and I also have 2 cats) but wonder realistically if I?ll make the effort to use one. A friend had a fleece tube thing which she said was easy to use.

Daisy ? glad that site gave you some ideas my Dad?s book was fiction based on his experiences in Hong Kong in the early 70s. Basically, it was about a naval officer and his encounters with the triads and the drug trade. Quite exciting.

mspotatochip · 11/01/2009 19:43

Hello ladies I've been lurking for a while and thought I should introduce myself! I am due 22/06, I have dd 2 this month. I think I've put off posting as dd was born at 35 weeks due to pre-eclampsia so i'm thinking more May than June!

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 11/01/2009 20:00

Hi there mspotatochip - nice to see you on here. I also had my DS early, but at 37 weeks. I think mine might be a May baby too (I bloody hope so). I was bed-bound by SPD by the end of pregnancy and the thought of potentially being pregnant for another 5 weeks might have sent me over the edge! Just copy and paste the list of all our names and add your name in where you fit (if you see what I mean) x

mspotatochip · 11/01/2009 20:00

Just been reading last few days........... As far as pain of child birth goes I had a lot of complications first time round and the memory of that does affect you and flavour your perception of child birth. BUT I am optimistic that things don't have to be that way due to all the lovely positive experiences I've read on mumsnet.

Re breastfeeding I had pain in the beginning, used lansinoh and toughened up. I loved the convenience, became a dab hand at feeding anywhere and was bereft when dd self weaned at 7.5 months. Making up bottles in the middle of the night is not my idea of fun compared to picking her up, rolling over and letting her get on with it while I dozed!

MrsMcJnr · 11/01/2009 20:05

MsPotato - hello and welcome (and congrats!) my DS self weaned too, at 6.5 months, I was gutted, I hope to carry on for longer this time too.

mspotatochip · 11/01/2009 20:11

mrsmcjnr at the time i wasn't up on mumsnet and kellymom etc and I think in retrospect it was a nursing strike and we could have got through it. Although the next month we went on holidays to greece and I broke my arm. Now that would have been a nightmare if she was still bf do i felt a bit better in the end!

mspotatochip · 11/01/2009 20:13

ineedmorechoc, does SPD always come back? Maybe you will escape? I have a 1:4 chance of Pre eclampsia type problems recurring but I am being closely watched so trying hard not to worry about it. It was horrid but at least I wasn't in pain for weeks on end

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 11/01/2009 20:56

Unfortunately my SPD is already here mspotatochip. It's a pain in the arse (literally!) I've already been referred to physio and have my second session next week. It's not too bad at the mo (although evenings are a bit sore). The physio says that's it's good that it's happened this early as I'll limit my movements throughout pregnancy and hopefully won't have the threat of a wheelchair this time round. I hope you have more luck with your pregnancy this time x

OP posts:
LittleSarah · 11/01/2009 20:57

Re pain of labour and breastfeeding I totally with all who said it depends on personal experience and so on.

I felt dreadful for some of you reading your experiences of breastfeeding as I didn't find it painful and it all went fairly smoothly. However, I have noticed my nipples seem far more sensitive this time round so it may not be the case this time.

Labour too is different for everyone. I know my dad was worried about me having a home birth with minimal pain relief as my mum had had two incredibly difficult labours with me and my sister. Happily, mine was (although painful) quite quick and straightforward.

Anyway, basically I was lucky last time, very much hoping I will be again, but I know it could all be very different!

MrsMcJnr - was it you that mentioned fear of something increasing it? I think the lady reading my pregnancy yoga visualisation would agree! It's so funny, she keeps saying your birthing places are made of jelly and you can breathe the baby out... I do find it relaxing at least.

Hello mspotatochip! Ineed - I loved my sling with dd. I got one from zolowear and will be using it again this time. I didn't breastfeed it in much, but you could, I just preferred to take dd oot.

ermintrude - Jealous of your writing talents! I really must finish one my attempts at novels! Even if it is a bit lame at least I can say I've finished one!

LittleSarah · 11/01/2009 20:59

Sorry, don't know if that read right.

(Pain of labour/ breastfeeding depends on personal experience, by this I meant it is different for everyone)

MrsMcJnr · 11/01/2009 21:05

Littlesarah - It wasn't me but when I read that post (I think it was Ermintrude's actually) I was madly trying to remember what my hypnobirthing CD said, something equally amusing like "my baby exit is as big as a canyon" LOL

Tee2072 · 11/01/2009 21:29

Welcome mispotatochip!

They are made of jelly littlesarah? That's a bit disturbing, really!

mica23 · 11/01/2009 22:01

Oh, boy!Breastfeeding!I can only wish best of luck to everyone..I really, really wanted to breastfeed DD but after she ended up in hospital twice in first 10 days of her life and lost more than half her body_weight I threw in the towel..I pumped for 3 months but thats a small consolation..Friend of mine had no problem with it and every time I see her feeding her DD I get this ache.My milk kept coming up until this pregnancy and I tryed to get DD to go on the breast at least a little bit but she was something like 8 months by then and looked at me like I lost my marbles..
RE pain in pregnancy. After being iduced for 4 days at the end I opted for epidural and it was LOVELY!!Played scrable the rest of the time till DD eventualy appeared..Still, for the first time understod what they mean when they say in films things like "just hearing other prisoners screams was torture.."Still hoping things will go smother and faster this time..

ermintrude13 · 11/01/2009 22:53

LittleSarah lol the jelly comment. My NCT tutor used to keep saying 'A wet open mouth equals a wet open vagina' and all the dads-to-be would look at the floor in embarrassment. . However, it does make sense - if you clamp up your jaw then other muscles in your body mirror it. Not sure thinking about jelly or canyons would relax me, although I guess they might make me laugh, which would help with the bearing down...

I didn't start writing fiction till I was 34
and already had one child, so it's never too late to finish that novel - good luck with it.

mica23 4 day induction , you must have been absolutely knackered, I'm v impressed you had the brain power left for scrabble!

Ineed and mspotatochip (welcome), I started feeling very envious when you talked about giving birth a few weeks early - I'd fast forward the next 5 months quite happily - but pre-eclampsia or SPD are awful things to deal with, so I shouldn't grumble if this one is late like the other two.
