Tee lucky you being off, although you have the cold which I hope goes away soon! I'm sure you'll enjoy looking at prams, although I've ordered mine I think I will change it to something else

Well kinda feel bad today, been suffering the cold all week but continued to go to work all week and yesterday took a bad back due to the chair i have after previously asking for a foot rest and either a support for my back or a new chair and yesterday they just laughed and shrugged it off as just 'another complaint from a pregnant person'. There was a job being advertisded in Finance which I am trained in but wasn't going to go for (as social work took me on knowing I was pregnant) but now after a day of pain and of people slagging me and laughing at me I am going ahead and applying for it...stuff being committed to a service I dont really want to work in.

Sorry for the rant but I'm really angry and in a lot of pain

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 13/02/2009 09:17

Hope you feel better soon, Tee. I think I'm coming down with a cold. Had a crap night last night and my glands in my neck are all up. Just in time for half term..... nice....

Sorry to hear about your colleagues Flynn. They should, by rights, support your request for a back support and foot stool. Health and Safety should have done an assessment as soon as you told them you were pregnant. They need to get it sorted, and stop slagging you off and laughing at you - the bastards!

Off to buy paint to decorate DS's new bedroom ready for half term. Homebase have a 10% day today (I think) so we should be able to get it a bit cheaper....

We're cooking homemade pizzas tomorrow nice with some pink bubbles for Valentines (one glass for me that I'll make last all night!). No presents, but cards and food. We got a breadmaker for Christmas and it makes the dough for you - it's so exciting (do I sound horribly sad?)!

Hope all you and your lovely bumps are well and happy. Roll on the weekend (then it's my 3D gender scan on Monday woo hoo!)xx

I also have a rotten does of cold. I am posting this and then crawling back into bed again. I can't stop blowing my nose and have awful headaches

Sounds like fun ineed decorating ds's new room. I love painting!

Go for it Flynn lifes too short to be working with people that don't appreciate you. I think its awful that they have been laughing at your requests when you are within all yiour rights.

Tee Hope you get over your cold soon. I am feeling the same as this is my 3rd rotten does since pg. I am finding the lemon water a bit boring this time around and am having to pop quite a few paracetamols to keep me going.

ermintrude13 · 13/02/2009 10:23

Tee and Choccie hope you both feel better soon. My DC have just got over nasty colds and I didn't get a sniffle - touch wood - so hope I've avoided it. And Choccie, you love painting . I've done too much of 'doing up' houses to want to hold another roller in my life, and I'm afraid I'm one of the 'It'll do' crew so DH bans me from the tricky bits! When you're done there would you mind popping over here and sorting out a couple of my rooms that need decorating? I'll feed you cake...

Flynn how mean of your colleagues to laugh at a reasonable request. Until they do something about it, can you take something in to help - even a cushion you can position - or grab an old stationery box for your feet? Anything to ease your back problem temporarily, because a bad back is a horrible thing to have at the best of time let alone when you've a bump out front to deal with too.

I actually have some work in the outside world today - leading a discussion in a library, how glamorous - and it's a beautifully sunny day here in the Midlands. Hope the sun's shining where you are too - and hurrah for Fridays!

June2009 · 13/02/2009 10:56

flynn Ignorant pillocks. You don't owe them anything, I'm glad you're going to apply for that other job.
Stupid people like that anger me. Some of my dh's relatives think I'm a bully to have made my dh stop smoking in our house since I got pregnant ?!?

Did you guys see the link on bbc website about baby signing?
Are any of you doing this already?
One of my friends said they were using some signs at the nursery where her daugter was going around 1yo or so. I'd got her a book but she honestly never found the time once the baby was there, and she's a "language enthusiast".

I already bought some books from amazon a few months ago, hopeful that we'll get our head round it before the baby is here.

The baby was kicking so much last night that I thought I was having contractions, what do contractions feel like? Is it all over your belly? I can fell the baby's heart round where my belly button is and I could feel constant kicking at the bottom of my belly. She started doing it again this morning for a little bit.

flynn1984 · 13/02/2009 11:14

Thanks everyone for your thoughts on my situation. only after I mentioned that I'm going to the Health & Safety dept did they get me a footrest, but I've asked for a better chair with arm rests so a cushion could be easily slotted onto the chair but not getting one the chair I have makes me feel like I'm going to fall off but because of that I put more pressure my back to keep me upright (if that makes sense) I do feel awful for going for another job as I've only been here 1 month and have had to take up 4 different jobs in the past year due to temp contracts but I'm trained in Finance so please wish me luck!

Again sorry for the me post

mrsmcjnr how did yesterday go, hope everything went fine and your problems are sorted x

Tee & choccie I hope both of you get better soon x

llynnnn · 13/02/2009 11:31

just a quick hello! i've been rubbish at keeping up to date with the thread recently, must try harder!!

tee & Choccie - hope you both feel better really soon, i know exactly how you feel, its rubbish having a cold while pregnant. I was desperate for a couple of lemsips last week!!

Flynn - good luck for your job application, hope you get it. dont blame you at ALL for going for it, sounds like your colleagues have been awful to work with! I have a cushion on my work chair to support my back as I was getting back pain from being sat all day

LittleSarah · 13/02/2009 11:49

Flynn - What a bunch of arseholes! Honestly, you would think that with pregnancy being fairly common people would have more empathy.

June - It's only right your dh shouldn't smoke in the house anymore, that seems a fair request to me. If dh still smoked he'd be outside too. Even my young, childless friends were happy to go outside when we had a party recently.

Dh's ex-stepfather on the other hand is being a complete dick about his smoking. This is the 64 year old with heart and lung problems by the way! Dh went round the other week and he said in the course of about half an hour his ex-stepdad must have had about four cigarettes with his pregnant girlfriend right there, no open window or anything. And worse, when she asked him not to blow smoke in her direction he refused!! (They don't actually live together so it was technically in his home but NO WAY I'd put up with that).

On the me front, v glad tis Friday, long day aat work with little to do. Was a little disappointed to get a mark from uni yesterday of 67%. I know that is actually a good mark but I did think I deserved a little higher so was upset. Stupid and trivial I know, but now I have it in perspective. I'll graduate in July with a 2.1 (hons) and two kids and that is no bad treally.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 13/02/2009 12:47

All the best people get 2:1s LittleSarah - to get one with two kids is bloody brilliant! Huge congratulations! What's your degree in? I sometimes wish I could shake myself as, when I was doing my degree, I wasn't really that 'into' it and sometimes, on reflection, feel I really wasted an opportunity - I think I'd find it all so fascinating now I'm in my 30s.

Um, with regards to contractions June, I felt it like a deep cramping, pulling sensation, similar type of pain to period pain but obviously far more intense. The best metaphor to describe contraction pain is that it's like watching a tsunami come towards you, while you're waiting on shore rooted to the spot. When it hits you, you are a bit lost in it for a while and you don't know which way is up, and then the wave recedes again and you can breathe normally again (for a short while)!

I was always fascinated listening to other people's labour stories, before I had DS, but actually labour is so different for everyone that it's a bit pointless really. You just need to know that you'll get through it and that there is a wicked reward at the end !

Personally, I find pregnancy more of a mission than I found labour - and I didn't have that easy a labour.... so if you can get through this, you can get through anything!!

OP posts:
LittleSarah · 13/02/2009 12:53

Ineed - My degree is in journalism, and fingers crossed that come next year I'll be able to finally start my career! Thanks for your congrats, it's been great, can't believe the four years are almost over.

Good description of contractions!

LittleSarah · 13/02/2009 12:55

Ineed - I know what you mean about doing it when you're older, I started a degree and ended up dropping out as I wasn't really into it, now I've been much more interested and committed.

bunnymother · 13/02/2009 13:01

Hello ladies!

Have been on the couch w some sort of stomach virus - oh the glamour! Feeling a little more human now...

Flynn - agree with all the posts that your "co-workers" are behaving unacceptably in sniggering a/delaying responding to your requests. Not to mention, that this is a risk issue, so are being stupid. I would definitely prioritise your job applicataion - not a good environment to be in. Frankly, am surprised at the attitude - isn't social work meant to be a caring environment?? You should not have to suffer at all. Pregnancy is no different from any other issue that impacts your health - should be taken seriously! Would they be like that w someone who had cancer or vision impairment, doubt it! Oops, am on the soap box.

June - again, not even sure I would bother responding to suggestions that you were bullying DH into not smoking in the house. Is there something in the water that is tampering with people's commonsense? I already talk too much wth my hands, but not sure that my little one-to-be will benefit from that, but lets hope so. Am not posh, though, am Australian!

LittleSarah - not sure what shocked me more about DH's ex-stepfather - exposing his child to cigarette smoke or that he is having a child at 64! Although no judgment on the latter. Am feeling v judgy on the blowing smoke at girlfriend point, though. Charming. BTW whenever I wasn't hapy with my uni marks, I would go and discuss them with my lecturer. Nothing to lose, and in a couple of instances they were revised upwards. 2.1 (hons) without children is a big achievement. Add kids, and you are a superhero!

Tee and choccie - hope you feel better soon!

Can't see bottom of my stomach, so no idea if I have stretch marks. Have asked DH to be on the look out, but then he sensibly asked what I would do if they appear. Answer - nothing useful, just freak out, then get used to them.

I am wearing under the bump jeans, but the Next ones dig in a bit. The Topshop ones are great and look good, plus are quite soft. I am in my regular size for maternity, but went up a size when buying stretchy knits in "normal" range of clothes.

Am going to check out Blooming Marvellous website (thanks Juicy) and see what's going on, as well as Lullaby (thanks Daisy5 for the tip).

If I don't talk to you beforehand, hope everyone has a lovely Valentine's Day - sounds like everyone has planned something special!

bigcar · 13/02/2009 14:38

Afternoon all

Seems like i'm not the only one with stretch marks then mine are new, the old ones are still faint and silvery but I have a couple of new ones higher up my bump. My bikini days were over a long time ago

June, nobody smokes in my house either, even dh before he gave up. Not sure about that link, it seemed to be saying your child did better if you were from a better socio economic group I was left wondering really where signing came into it. Having said that I have read other articles (can't remember where) that have said baby signing can help your lo communicate more effectively at an earlier age than speech would allow. If it's something you're interested in, you may be better off going with dvds or classes, these are very popular round my way.

Bunnymother, not sure about having something special planned for valentines, we've ordered a couple of new tyres for the car that we will be getting fitted tomorrow, we know how to live in this household

Happy valentines day ladies

lauraloo09 · 13/02/2009 15:19

Afternoon all! - please note name change from Flynn1984

Just back from my maternity meeting with HR and it was good, rerally perked my up...I was originally going to take 6 months mat leave but now I'm taking 9 months off and using all my holidays before I go off so I officially leave work on 7th May on annual leave so less than 12 weeks to go I do feel awful as I really dont like the thought of leaveing the work in trouble but hey I'm entitled to it right

I hope everyone else is having a good afternoon!

June2009 · 13/02/2009 16:30

Congrats littlesarah :D You should be proud of yourself! I'm always impressed with journalists, I think it's such a cool job.

bunny Yeah I didn't respond, I was annoyed that it was such an issue with them when it's never been an issue with dh, he knows it's the right thing to do.

ooh flynn is lauraloo09 now, that's going to get some getting used to :D

Ineed I stopped reading about labour, it's too scary :D
The kicking kept me awake last night and I think I had some kind of anxiety attack thinking that it could be contractions or something was wrong and just felt really nervous all of a sudden.
I had an insight into how some women in labour do not want anyone near them or touching them, I was very snappy at dh and he was only trying to help!

Pheeww, 4:30, nearly the weekend!

Tee2072 · 13/02/2009 16:38

Anyone who is nervous about labour (and aren't we all, even just a little?) should read this thread: Funny Parts of Childbirth

Had me in stitches!

Its from about 2 years ago, but someone found it and resurrected it about a week ago.

ermintrude13 · 13/02/2009 16:44

June that feeling when your bump tightens up is your uterus contracting ie. the muscles having a practice as they grow bigger to accommodate the growing baby, but they are not the same as the contractions which will help to push the baby out, which Ineed describes most graphically! If you've ever had painful periods labour contractions are more like that (and anyone who has is likely to cope better with them because it's a familiar pain - every cloud...) It does feel odd when the bump becomes tight as a drum though, even 3rd time around! Otherwise it could be baby having a big stretch, but you're more likely to feel the limbs in that case. Mine likes to have a good thump about first thing in the morning and last thing at night, which doesn't bode well...

Re: baby signing - I know a few people who've tried it and by the time their LOs have 'got it' they're ready to talk anyway . Useful for older kids whose speech is a bit slow developing - my sis finds it v handy for her 2 yr old who doesn't talk much - or there's Makaton signing (done beautifully by Justin/Mr Tumble on CBeebiesO for kids with specific communication or hearing difficulties.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 13/02/2009 17:02

Mmmmm now re-reading my post and realise that it was actually a simile, and not a metaphor, describing the contraction pain...... pregnancy has rotted my brain....

OP posts:
Tee2072 · 13/02/2009 17:56

I meant to say, regarding baby sign, that my SIL used it quite successfully with both of her daughters starting at about 1.5. They could both say 'more' 'done' 'eat' and a few other things. They didn't use traditional sign language, but some that they made up!

daisy5 · 13/02/2009 18:04

newlaura - what ignorance and pettiness - I thought those days were over. You'll be pleased to be counting down till you escape. You haven't chosen the name Laura for your bump by any chance?

Speaking of which, how many of you have decided on a name already?

littlesarah - congrats on the 2:1 Hons - fantastic degree to have under your belt. What area of journalism are you most interested in concentrating on? Incredible the smoking thing, I wouldn't visit to be honest, or would sit at the door with the door wide open. It's well documented it is not good. As an ex smoker I rather enjoy the odd whiff of tobacco but usually people are so considerate they wouldn't dream of lighting up around me.

re babysigning - my friend just taught her son six basic symbols and they were a great help. I went on holiday with them at the time in France (pre DD) and Sebastian was my 'backseat buddy' as we would communicate by sign. Very simple of course. He would point at something which meant 'What is that?' and I would tell him. There was a sign for milk, a sign for biscuit and I can't remember the other two.

I'm in such good shape, I keep forgetting I'm pregnant. I'm just in heaven! Still snowed under with this photography assignment. I have to produce a series of ten photographs, in different styles, with a 40 page sketchbook to back up all the learnings and research and preparation etc. I just have one more photograph to take and it will be off a studio style 'pregnant bump' - a friend of a friend is coming over next Monday and I have to get all my ideas firmed up before then with sketches of what I plan to do. Just about 10 more days till I submit it and I am exhausted! My daughter thinks I've abandoned her, I think.

Tee2072 · 13/02/2009 18:33

No names here, cuz we don't know what it is!

LittleSarah · 13/02/2009 18:41

daisy - Sounds like you are doing fab with your assignment, although no doubt it'll be a huge relief when it's over!

I'm interested in features writing, arts, culture, lifestyle, family, all that kind of stuff, but I'll take anything when it comes to job hunting!

I will be doing a parenting based article soon I think and will no doubt recruit you all for opinions.

Thanks for all the congrats about my degree, I now had better get a 2.1 eh?! Lol, at least I'm definitely on track for that.

ermintrude13 · 13/02/2009 19:39

LittleSarah somebody told me that the parenting mag Juno is looking for contributions. I think they're having problems with circulation and so can't pay, but might be something for starters?

lauraloo09 · 13/02/2009 19:53

daisy laura is my name, baby will be called sarah i have no imagination when it comes to choosing a screan name

re baby signing i've been reading up on it and think it will be pretty useful for baby to help her develop.

Tee thanks for the link about labour will be giving that a read tonight.

Can't keep the smile off my face 52 working days till I knock off on annual leave 1 month before my offical maternity leave starts roll on 6th may...baby must be happy too she's done nothing but kick me all afternoon/night not that I mind

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 13/02/2009 20:56

Hi all,

Thanks for all the kind thoughts DD is recovering nicely and the cheekieness is dfinitely back!!

With regard to the bebysigning my sis did a course years ago and used it with dniece we've borrowed a few bits from that and made a few of our own.
e.g. please/thankyou (God I'm soooo middleclass!) hungry, thirsty etc. but she's more able to communicate now although in a style only a mother understands

Bumpwise things are going ok beginning to get more indigestion now, which isn't great as I hate gaviscon (but hate indigestioN more!!)

As for stretch marks dh varies between calling it a sunburst (when not pregnant) and tiger stripes when at full stretch which makes me think less badly of them. Actually the only time I've ever been bothered is when putting on a bikini. I'm sure dh is so relieved when we do actually have the time and energy to do anything vaguely like jumping each other, he doesn't see anything there!!!!!

Anyone who's begining to worry about labour I can not recommend enough hypnobirthing CD's i borrowed from a friend last time when I was waking early in the moring with nightmares, didn't do an expensive course but the 2 cd's were enough to get me through.

Think that's all for now

Dorisx
