Hi there questions2008 - nice to see you on here. Congrats on the boy, boys are fab I think you can get your MatB1 after 24 because that's when the pregnancy becomes viable (could survive if born prematurely). You can hand your MatB1 form in any when up to 28 days before you expect to go on Maternity Leave. You can inform your employer officially on the date you intend to leave, and then send in your MatB1 form in separately. This is what I'm doing as I now don't see my midwife until I'm 28 weeks pregnant.

Isn't that amazing to think that some babies are born at 24 weeks and survive? I'm 23 weeks today and it all still seems so far away. Even though DS was born early (not hugely - at 37 weeks) I still can't imagine going through labour next week. It must make the whole of labour so scary and devastating as it's so early and you're so under-prepared...

Still trying to bloody sort out the spare room so that we can decorate it at half term ready for DS to move into. I always prided myself on my organisation and that fact that I am definitely not a hoarder.... I now discover that I was living in cloud-cuckoo land.... what a lot of crap we've had to get rid of... and it's still coming...

Oh, and your midwife sounds a little odd June. It's based on being pregnant for 40 weeks... nothing to do with calendar months. You keep counting the way you have been.

questions I've had my matb1 at my 20 weeks scan.

ermintrude I know right, I'll just forget what she said and put it down to the hecticness of the day she was having.
I only just started thinking about how the nursery is going to work out. There is a room there which is a start I guess ;)

Wicked pictures Tee :D I never put mine up from my last scan. My auntie took some pics of me looking very pregnant but they pictures are so high def they take yonks to download and so far I haven't found the patience!

Juicygirlpink · 06/02/2009 18:17

Evening all,

had a slight panic- I LOST OUR THREAD but thank goodness you are all still here supporting each other- phew really must get to grips with this website !

zozo- we are having baby at uch

ineedmore- praising you on even thinking about baby's room, all that we know is which room will be dedicated to baby (its currently my wardrobe), but what I have been trying to do whilst snow bound is have a bit of a clear up & I have managed to put some of my clothes on e-bay. We are having our kitchen ripped out & red-done from scratch as of march 2nd, builder thinks its will take a month! dh says he want's to get the kitchen 'out the way' before we do the nursery! I am begining to panic a little cause lets be honest we are looking at april 2nd at the earliest exactly 7 weeks before my due date, not much time to decorate a room & get all baby bit's ready! That's partly why i started getting some of baby;s bits in now (& because I am thrilled to become a mumma!) - I will keep you posted on the builder front!!!

questions08- I have my matb1 all ready I received it at 22 +2 mw sent it out to me no probs, i am not sure on when we are supposed to get it all i know it's after week 21?

Tee- ENJOY your birthday night out! glad you haev something good to wear! Love the pic's you look great girl!- baby is so cute!

june09- thanks for update on the course, dh didn't seem to keen (he is being a misery I say!) x

Ok a question- does anyone live near a blooming marvellous? I bought loads of their maternity clothes when i first fell pg but now they are in recession very sad, i just wondered if anyone knows if the stores are still open? Oh & mat clothes- i got some beautiful bits from m&s (but only the huge stores or online that stock it) the trousers are really comfortable & i can wear a 16 (normally an 18)!

zozokat · 06/02/2009 18:43

Hi question2008, that's great, congrats! maybe we'll be at St Mary's around the same time its really good to hear you picked the hospital even though you live farther away, that must be good. (are you very far away? would love to meet other mums nearby- ? or nearby-ish)

I also feel like it has just gotten much more 'real' -- I've just sent off jpegs of the scans to various family members and everyone's asking if its a boy or girl, but we want to keep it under wraps for a little while longer.

daisy5 yikes i can't imagine taking a bus to the hospital on Oxford street, that's brave. hope she got there alright and that everything went well!

Re: prams, dh and i did loads of research on this a little while ago and decided we'd look for a travel system -- just makes more sense as we have a 1-bed flat and could use the cot as a bed while we renovate a little nursery corner.

We thought a second-hand Quinny 'Buzz' 3-wheeler for park walks etc might be good, but were horrified by how heavy and wide it was when we went to see it in person at a mothercare! this was stressful though, there doesn't seem to be an off-road pram that will also fit on a bus (??)

Luckily a friend of mine with a 1-year-old in NYC told me that using a bjorn or sling to get around makes more sense in the first few months so manoeuvring a pram around the busy city centre isn't an issue, which was a big relief! (She recommended getting a cheap, light stroller for city travel later on, when the baby is big enough.)

ermintrude13 · 06/02/2009 19:16

zozokat, v good point about having to go and look at buggies/travel systems in person. Then you can imagine yourself taking it into your house/flat, round local streets, folding it up for the car/bus etc. The 'feel' of it is as important for the look and you can always go to a showroom and then find what you want cheaper online.

We used our Baby Bjorn for the first few months with DD so didn't get a from-birth buggy of any kind once we realised that was the easiest method. But I had a bit of prolapse with DS and only DH could manage the sling. You have to be ready to respond to unexpected situations/not feeling quite how you thought you would about certain things.

We're not decorating the spare room just yet because there will prob be a bit of a change around with the other DC so baby will be in with us at first anyway. Juicygirlpink don't panic or get too stressed about having everything just so before the baby arrives; s/he won't mind a bit if the final lick of paint arrives after s/he does. . It is nice starting to gather things you need though, esp before we all get too mahoosive to wander around the shops comfortably!

StrawberrySam the most important advice anyone gave me about expressing milk is to try it only when bf is already established OR when advised to pump to increase milk production (which should be rare because usually a baby will suck and your breasts will fill up - it's a perfect balance between demand and supply - but sometimes a baby who is poorly or sleepy at first might need a bit of help with the demand bit). It's far easier to express once you and babe have got the hang of feeding.

If you have to express to leave LO with someone else or go to work etc. try to set aside a couple of weeks at least to build up the knack, and build up baby's acceptance of a bottle. If you start off thinking you'll produce a full bottle you may be disappointed.

I like the Avent manual pump but some people prefer electric. If you know anyone with different models who might let you have a go you could try them, otherwise start with a manual and see how you go. Most systems do freezer bags which you can put inside a bottle and then seal which is handy for storing frozen b/f.

Only try expressing when you know you have milk available. Massaging around the nipple can help the 'let down' response get going. Take it easy and you'll find that the one or two dribbly bits you get first go will eventually turn into 4 or 5 big spurts!

My DC would never take a bottle from me although some quite happily swap between breast and bottle, so it's handy to get DP or someone else to try the first bottle and make sure the baby is hungry. You may need to try different teats; ones that are more nipple-like are best for bf babes.

Remember that if you've expresed, you've told your body you need to produce more milk, so if you're storing it and feeding baby as usual you will have started over-producing - which is fine if you need to build up a supply, but should be gradual otherwise you'll get engorged and uncomfortable.

There's loads of other info available - I bet there are threads here about it - but a lot becomes clearer once you actually get the hang of b/f, which I'm sure you will.

Happy Friday ladies

Ah Zozokat ? so glad it went well with the scan congrats on having a boy, I adore having a son I was going to have a doula with DS but decided against it in the end and I am glad, it was a precious time and I think DH would have felt less useful if there had been someone else there. Each to their own though, I have friends who swore by theirs. Now, post natal doulas, I would LOVE to have one of those!

Thanks for your kind words Daisy; I think everything seems worse when you are pregnant. Hope there are no nasty surprises at your DH?s work.

Littlesarah ? I remember people telling me that the first cup of tea after birth tastes heavenly, I preferred my lucozade personally. Sun came out today and DS could play outside ? everyone happy. I also had to take him for a jag poor little mite, he really cried I went to the NCT sales, fabulous, especially in your neck of the woods both times I have been lent/given Moses baskets, love them! DS liked his so I hope this baby does too. That said I?d like her to sleep in the Nature?s Nest after a couple of weeks. Get that in writing about the mat pay hon!

Myneaux ? I respond in word and then cut and paste the other tricky thing about baby equipment is that some babies love things other babies hate. For my whole pregnancy with DS I coveted a Fisher Price Rain Forrest swing, I got one on eBay and was over the moon and he HATED it, with a passion maybe this baby will like it more! Well done on making a decision on a buggy, I remember the relief last time?. And now I am having to go through it all again on the double buggy front

Flynn ? I have a JoJoMamanBebe pair of jeans and they are sooo comfy, they have an elasticised waist; I hate the ones that are elasticated at the sides only, constantly falling down

Tee ? hope you enjoyed your birthday day off I am a big slow cooker fan though I have to say it is odd to wake up in the morning to the smell of your evening meal! enjoy yours!!! have fun tonight and I love your pics

Dreamy ? lovely to be feeling so much what a lovely idea about the baskets, must remember that one. Thanks for your kind wishes and ideas part of the issue is that my friends in trouble are in the UK and I am in Spain it was a nicer day today and a friend and I took the babies (same age) out to play so I am feeling a lot more positive thanks. Glad your DP is doing ok, hope that continues and that he finds a new job soon. What a lot of brainy family members!

June ? I knew exactly how many weeks and days I was last time, this time I really don?t know doesn?t help that I don?t have a start date as didn?t have an AF after DS was born, or that the Dr has put me at least a week ahead of where I think I should be! I must be somewhere between 23 and 24 weeks I guess. By the way both DS and I were due on 15/1, I was born on 29/12 and he was born on 24/1!! I really thought he?d turn up early!!

Questions ? congrats and welcome boys are fab!! If you order the buggy whilst the deal is on the shop may well store it for you if you don?t want it in the house? A lot of them have an 8-10 week order time too. I thought I?d use slings a lot but just didn?t, couldn?t get the hang of them. That said it was winter when DS was tiny, maybe it will be different with a summer baby. They seemed very relaxed about those Mat B1 forms both at Drs and at work for me last time, think I got it at 24 weeks too.

Strawberrysam ? I couldn?t fault my Medela swing breast pump. Got mine on eBay, brand new in the box but a lot cheaper than in the shops

Ermintrude ? my experience of breast feeding and expressing made me so glad that I?d bought a breast pump and tried it out before DS arrived. He had a poor latch and I got very damaged and expressing and using protectors was the only way I could continue breastfeeding for as long as I did and I had to start doing that when he was less than 3 weeks old. I agree that the ideal would be to let the baby control its supply and demand but that?s best case scenario in my experience. Like you, I never gave DS a bottle until he was over 6 months so as to avoid confusion.

Hello everyone else!

LittleSarah · 06/02/2009 21:49

MrsMcJnr - Agree with idea of post natal doulas! During my labour I was in my own wee world so don't think it would help me then, but after, yes please!

Should get everything confirmed about mat pay next week and can ask for it in writing then.

June - Yes it did seem a bit strange, just go with Sunday!

questions - I got Mat B1 at 22 weeks. I hope you don't need to get it in by 25 weeks as I haven't confirmed when I am finishing yet and I'm to send mine to agency with letter confirming end date!

Actually I better get it in soon, I am hoping to finish on 20th of March, and if I need to get it in a month before then....

Strawberry - I struggled with the hand pump, but then I didn't know all that stuff ermintrude suggested so it may have been my own ignorance at fault. I am leaning towards getting an electric one this time though.

highrise · 07/02/2009 09:21

Better late than never I guess...hello to everyone, I'm due 29th June (although I still think my date is wrong). Got 20 week scan on Monday excited and nervous, fingers crossed everything OK.

Bloods came back low risk, although not sure if stats are good average or otherwise.

Prams - Looking at the Jane Slalom Pro, too worried to buy anything in case we jinx it, it's our first baby.

Welcome highrise! Glad you added yourself to the list!

What were the stats? Maybe someone here will know.

Well, was going to head to Ikea today to look at nursery furniture, but had a bad night so think I'll stay home rather than deal with the bus for 25 minutes!

As DH pointed out, we still have 19 weeks!

highrise · 07/02/2009 09:44

Thanks, I'll dig them out and post later.
Sorry you had a bad night.

3 nights this week been up at 3.30 to pee and can't get back to sleep, get dozy just around 6 when I have to get up for work!

Made it through to 5.30 this morning, planning a nap later.

Have a good weekend...

ermintrude13 · 07/02/2009 12:36

MrsMc do you mean you tried expressing BEFORE giving birth, or that you'd already tried it with a previous child? I don't think I'd have got anything out before the birth , although I did put the pump together and see how it worked as soon as I bought it. I do know that some mums have to express early on in order to increase supply or compensate for early latching problems and mentioned that to Strawb in my first para - but suggested this is best done when necessary, as in your case, rather than as a matter of course.

My DD went very happily between breast and bottle from 4 months old - although she'd never accept a bottle from me - whereas DS would never take any milk in any kind of container from anyone - we tried everything! - so when I went back to work when he ws 6 months he would have some water from a cup and then eat whatever mush the nursery fed him but have no milk after his breakfast feed. Meanwhile, because expressing was no use to him, I'd get home from work all engorged and he'd empty both breasts in a v business-like fashion. Eventually supply settled down, but it was a bit scary at first and I worried that he wasn't getting the right nutrition, but it doesn't seem to have done him any harm

Welcome highrise. If the stats said low risk they already sound good, try not to worry.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 07/02/2009 12:48

I agree MrsMc that my hand pump was a godsend in those early days. DS had his jaw pushed out of alignment by the forceps and couldn't latch at all. I managed 10 days of pumping and pain before I switched to formula (after 2 weeks a cranial osteopath realised why and 'popped' his jaw back in). I wouldn't have got any milk into him at all without my hand pump.

I had an Avent one, but then I used Avent bottles. I think the Tommee Tippee ones are supposed to be good - especially as they are more breast shaped. I also have a Medela electric pump that was given to me, but I found I actually got more milk out of the hand-pump and felt less like a lactating bovine than with the electric one! I fully intend to BF this time round (if I'm lucky enough) and wouldn't start expressing early this time until at least a month or two (as ermintrude said). The trouble is, you don't expect to have any probs (I didn't), so it's worth getting one, just in case.

Hello everyone. DS is teething (does it ever end?) so is a grouchy monkey today. Very tiring....

chocciedooby · 07/02/2009 13:06

Hi there highrise. Welcome

I just bought a Jane Slalom Pro for our 3rd child and I love it (even though baby is not here yet!).

I wish I had bought something like this for DS1 and 2. It has such a lovely wide seat that it can be used up to 3 years of age and it is so robust. Love the colours as well.
They are very expensive brand new but look on ebay as I got mine at a knock down price. I got sick of bidding for them and losing out so when I found one that was "buy for now" I jumped at it. It is brand new but ex display model. I got the matrix cup seat included and the while package cost me £275!!!!

chocciedooby · 07/02/2009 13:08

whole -oops sorry.

If I was starting all over again and was planning to have 2 or 3 kids I would probably have gone with the Phil and Teds as can go from a single to a double seater and looks very nifty.

Juicygirlpink · 07/02/2009 19:03

welcome high rise - best of luck for your scan! It is a truely wonderful experience seeing baby kicking away

chocciedooby- loving your positive e-bay experience for baby's things, I have been looking for a nappy bag lately on there but can't see the one that I have had in mind, my problem is that I had planned my babies whole pram, outfit's & all my bits before we even decided to try .

tee- we are going to head over to ikea at some point too. there kiddies bedrooms are so cute! We have decided to get a cot (gift from PIL) & to decorate in a light lemon colour & get the furniture from ikea, John lewis & mama;s & papa;s do some lovely nursery sets but we figured once baby is no longer a baby to let them choose & do the whole new matching furniture thing.

ermitrude- did i read your post correctly on bottle & boob? You did both? I am interested as i am going to give the breast a try but, I am not adverse to a bit of bottle too (ie what would happen if i was sick in bed? dh would have to bottle formula feed if i couldn't express), I am confused as mw says one or the other?

I am 22 + 6 yesterday had to have a nap (for 2 hours), the same again today- anyone else suffering with extreme tiredness in 2nd trimester? I was totally shattered from weeks 3-13 now I think it has come back. I praise all of you ladies who manage to work whilst pregnant , i was hoping to get a few more weeks of energy!!!

Tee2072 · 07/02/2009 19:37

juicypinkgirl I have been tired for this whole pregnancy. I have never gotten the 2nd trimester burst of energy everyone keeps promising me!

I do work, however. I usually come home from work, eat, watch a bit of TV/play online and into bed by 9! I am of anyone who doesn't work!

Today my lovely nap was interrupted by a hypoglycaemic incident. So the baby is taking my insulin and my glucose. Being diabetic is so.much.fun. now that I'm pregnant!

ermintrude13 · 07/02/2009 20:28

Tee, hope you're feeling better after your hypo .

Juicygirlpink (I got it the right way round, yay!) I never formula fed but expressed breast milk to be fed to DD in bottles when I was at work (as I said, DS would never accept milk from anywhere except my boob). If you are b/feeding and ill, you'll do what all mothers end up doing at some stage, ie. deny that you are ill! So you'll b/f through colds and flu and headaches, and only going into a coma will stop you - the same goes for bottle-feeding mums if there's nobody else around to do it, and for anyone who's sick in charge of a LO. You'll be amazed at how you can keep going. I've had a couple of separate incidents - nothing really, but more than enough for me - of literally crawling on all fours with a fever to reach a crying baby, change its nappy, feed it and do whatever else needed doing before DH came home and rescued me. So (hopefully) there won't be many times when you'll be tucked up in bed and DH will be doing all the feeding, unless you're very ill indeed... in which case DH will have to muddle through and a hungry baby will probably manage to take whatever it can get.

MW's advice is right - some mums manage to mix bottle and breast, but it does mess with the supply of breast milk and can leave you feeling engorged and/or not producing enough milk when the baby needs it. So to try a bottle of formula 'just in case' you might need it may not be such a good idea, unless you want to get the babe onto regular mixed feednig. I didn't want my DC to have formula at all but other people don't feel so strongly about it and I'm sure there are some experienced mixed feeders on mumsnet who can help advise.

But once you get to grips with b/f there's no reason you won't be able to express your own milk anyway, either for occasional or regular use. I have a v self-conscious friend who expresses 2 bottles of milk each day to feed her baby when they're out because she hates b/f in public, but then he's on the breast the rest of the time and she expresses the 2 bottles in between his feeds so she produces just the right amount. Other friends just keep a bottle in the freezer just in case, or in the fridge for another family member to give the baby when they're out. You'll come up with what suits you given a bit of time.

And I got it backwards! Sorry juicy!!

HI Tee. Hope you are ok.

I remember how tired I was with DC1. I was working back then and found it exhausting. Then DS1 was only 7 months old when I fell pregnant again so just had to get on with it. (I had given up work). I could however take naps during the day when DS1 napped so that helped. This time around has been different again. I never have got that pure exhaustion feeling at around 8pm needing to go to bed etc but have been getting wiped out at about 4pm for a couple of hours and then I bounce back (have no choice as 2Dcs to entertain). I then get tired again and would like to get to bed at 9ish but having trouble with DS1. He won't sleep until about 10pm everynight and will just keep coming into me if I'm in bed . I have felt like this since the New Year and have not managed to get into bed before 10pm.

Sorry for the rant.

hi all
Its just taken me ages to catch up with all your posts. Glad to hear everyone is ok though.
I've managed to drag myself out of bed today, for the first time since tuesday Been wiped out by a horrid flu-y bug and just couldnt stay awake!! dh had to go to work today tho and had no one else to look after dd so i had to get my self into gear! do feel better for it though!!

choccie - i know what you mean about feeling tired around 4pm, i do too but like you have no chance of sleeping then! I also get a second wind then! Hope you manage to get your ds1 sleeping better in the evenings so yo can get some well deserved rest

juicygirlpink - i cant help with the breastfeeding experience as i only managed a week last time and gave up because of the pain! looking back though, i wish i'd tried expressing into a bottle and tried mixed feeding to give myself a chance to heal a little rather than quitting all together. I hope this time to be much more relaxed about it all! (if this baby will let me!!)

Tee - hope you are feeling ok now, it must be scary for you. Love your pics!!

welcome highrise and congrats!

hi to everyone else, i will reply more tomorrow, i need to sleep again now

Tee Poor you! I hope you are feeling better.

Been up since 5, awake.... baby doing lots of kicking and not letting me sleep.... oh well.

Another day of sorting DS's potential new room so that we can start decorating as soon as half term is here. I think my brother has an interview near me in the week (which may mean that he and his girlfriend move 15 mins down the road ) so I need to clear all the crap out of the room so he has somewhere to stay.... all these extra things to think about! I really want to get the room sorted so that I can even start thinking about the logistics of a new baby... at the moment there is too much to think about.

Mind you, we were in the throes of completely gutting the house while pregnant with DS. In fact, we had builders in knocking down a chimney from roof to ground and having 3 walls knocked down with new RSJs while I was suffering with horrendous MS. We had no kitchen (other than a bucket with a hose and a microwave for the first 6 months of pregnancy. Because DS came 3 weeks early, we still had three rooms back to brick, no floorboards or ceilings. All the early photos of him in his moses basket were among building materials and dust sheets.

And I was working full-time.

So a bit of re-organisation and decorating doesn't seem too bad actually...

Happy Sunday x
