MrsMcJnr · 05/02/2009 20:35

Hello ladies, I know I shouldn?t really complain when so many of you are snowed in but we have had torrential rain here all week and I am so sick of it DS can?t play outside nor can I get any washing dry ? moan over Saw another apartment (well duplex) today, didn?t like it at all so in some ways that was a relief as that means there are less options to choose from but the master bedroom was bigger. All is very uncertain here with DH?s job which is very worrying , I slept really badly last night, I guess I need to know that we?ll be ok financially when this baby arrives, something that no one can reassure me on also some one tried to steal our car last night, BF is getting a divorce and another friend has just suffered a bereavement

Ermintrude ? I?m a details girl too, the more info they give me the better. With DS before each scan I looked up what I should be seeing I would love to have a home birth for all the reasons you stated but it?s just too risky for me with my blood disorder so I guess it?ll be the hospital for me again that said, I?ll be going there at the last minute again, let?s just hope I make it in time! apparently here they make you all stay 2 nights here because there is no aftercare like the midwife or HV in the UK. There are also 2 people to a room and someone has to stay with you overnight and there are no limits on visitors or to visiting times ? sounds like hell, you can just imagine a huge, noisy Spanish family there all night I remember practising that hanging from someone?s neck position at my natural birth class, LOL it wasn?t for me ? I had to lean over something, for me it was the bed. Wow lots of siblings for you!

Tee ? hope you had a lovely birthday when I was pg with DS and was in seminars, I loved just switching off and feeling him kick

Flynn ? so glad all is well with the baby, a pink bean fabulous! Hope the placenta moves up for you, there are a few of us with the same issue at the mo I think.

Daisy ? both my babies have/had long limbs at this stage afternoon tea sounds like a great way to meet new friends I was watching The Breakfast Club during my contractions with DS Hate it when the baby goes quiet and you start to worry. I can take or leave choc normally but not when pg.

Loouise ? glad that you are feeling better that?s lovely about the babyfather going to the 3D scan with you and to your brother?s birthday have you thought about your birth partner? Do you want the babyfather there with you? I think baby showers are becoming more and more popular in the UK, I?ve thrown a few for friends and we all had a great time there just aren?t enough things in life to celebrate in my opinion!

June ? hope the meet and greet went well, what did you think? Hope you see the physio soon. I have a spreadsheet of baby equipment from recommendations on MN from when I was pg with DS that I?d be happy to share I got a stage 1 maxi cosi car seat and the adaptors for my bugaboo but I never used the car seat on the chassis, or to carry DS about, I found it too hard to carry. For me (a walker not a driver) I found the carry cot indispensable. I adore my bugaboo; DS was in the carry cot until he was 7 months and I only moved him to the seat because he was munching on the zip, it was so nice and cool for him in there and he did sit up and look around as I had him propped up a bit.

Bunnymother ? I?m with you on the broken sleep, if it?s not my toddler waking me up it?s my bladder

Juicygirl ? surely your city girlfriends would love to organise a baby shower for you? which buggy did you go for? A bugaboo? What colours? That sweetcorn dish doesn?t sound all that yummy to me I adore my bugaboo, totally the right choice for me. Have a lot of friends here with bigger kids and they all love their bugaboos too I?ll get weighed next week at my appointment but by this stage with DS I?d put on a stone.

Leaky ? hello I think they are called nipple protectors/shields though I think they should be called collectors as that is really what they do, a total and absolute godsend in my opinion. I had some medela ones but the boots ones look just as good. LOL at why you are called Leaky must remember to work on those muscles!

Littlesarah ? I had a little bottle of chilled champagne and two flutes in my hospital bag but we didn?t drink it, even though I was fine after the birth, my blood pressure was sky high for a few hours and I felt very strange, fainted in the shower, found it most infuriating!! My DS was born at 5.10pm

Hello Bigcar

Ineed ? sorry to hear about the fall I fell when I was pg with DS and felt so very sorry for myself hope the SPD calms down soon. Hate that feeling of leaky boobs when BFing don?t you? Especially when you have just got clean!! I?ve got that maxi cosi stage 2 for my DS too.

Maz ? so glad all went well at the scan hon how was your swim?

Myneaux ? when PG with DS I dreamt that I leaked milk at work and so from then on (about 25 weeks!) I carried breast pads everywhere just in case. I never leaked before I had DS but was definitely a leaker when I was BFing, all I had to do was think about him best breast pads are by far the lansinoh ones in my opinion, far superior to anything else.

Strawberrysam ? I always had good experiences of maternity care on the NHS in the UK too

Choccie ? how awful about that fall when you were pg with DS! glad both of you were ok. Hope you enjoy the Jane, I see lots of them here in Spain. Need to go and check out their double actually but don?t think it has the features I am looking for.

Zozokat ? welcome and congrats hope your scan went well.

zozokat · 05/02/2009 21:25

Hi all

thanks for all the welcomes!!

my scan went well today, i feel really lucky as all is listed as 'normal' in the records (i had a mc before this pregnancy and have had 2 emergency scans before this one for shooting pains etc.)

Juicygirlpink because of the last emergency scan (2 weeks ago) i already knew we're having a boy will be having the baby in hospital, St Mary's in London, maybe with a doula i haven't decided, what about you?

we got some great little prints of the little tyke with his mouth open and i saw him hiccuping. very cute!

daisy5 · 05/02/2009 21:55

zozokat - is it St Mary's Paddington? A friend of mine had hers there - she was out shopping in Oxford Street with her dh and two children when the contractions came on strong. Her dh couldn't find a cab anywhere so in the end they hopped on a bus. Apparently the driver was very relieved when she got off, going by the noises she was making and facial expressions etc!!!

leaky - I almost p__ed myself laughing at your dilemma...as I am the same. I have to cross my legs before every cough, sneeze and sometimes when I laugh. I'm so glad I'm not going to an office these days. You are right - got to keep up those pelvic floor exercises.

mrsmcjnr - oh how upsetting for you. It sounds quite distressing. And your friend's predicaments. Oh I hope it all starts to feel a bit better soon. There is something bizarre going on at work for my dh and we are not sure what to make of it.

LittleSarah · 05/02/2009 22:26

leaky - Hey, I leaked SO much last time too! For the first six weeks it was mad, I had to wear the cups ALL the time, and they would fill up within the hour. So, basically if I had to walk to bus stop, wait for bus, sit on bus, by the time I arrived anywhere I was looking frantically for a loo to empty them out. I had at least two spare tops with me. It was great if I was in as I also froze loads but I did feel like a milk machine. Of course I asked the midwife for advice and she just had no idea and no experience of it....

To answer the question, I'm pretty sure I saw some in Boots recently (that's where I got mine last time).

June - Did you ask aboot car seats? Last time I was given a second hand one and I had a Mamas and Papas buggy. It would be handy to have a travel system I bet but we've bought a bugaboo bee this time as I just fell in love with it.

I was also given a moses basket and really liked it so will use it this time... I think go with what you fancy, some stuff you'll love and other things you'll do without next time...

MrsMcJnr - Sorry to hear about all the rain! Check me, the only one getting on the champagne right away! I must try this cup of tea thing this time.

Right, off to bed, so hello to everyone else!

(Have just started knitting the aforementioned heirloom shawl btw. Should be great but tisn't the easiest of patterns!

LittleSarah · 05/02/2009 22:28

Oh, juicy, I have put on five pounds. (Last time I was small so I think I may be again).

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 06/02/2009 07:42

June I don't know what CAT is? The leaflet's not a NHS one, it's by the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Women's Health. Here's a link to email them for a leaflet here (my physio is on the board there). If you ask for the leaflet on 'Pregnancy-Related Pelvic Girdle Pain' I think it's 50p a leaflet from what I can see on the site. It's really good. If it's too much of a faff, I'll change my settings so that you can contact me on the little letter symbol on the right hand side. I'll photocopy mine and post it to you. Unfortunately, it does sound, if the symptoms have gone on longer than a few days, that you may have SPD / PGP.

CRAP weather here again. Hating the snow/slush now as it's way too wet to go out so we have another day of being housebound. Yuck.

Good morning mummies!

Just started to snow here in Belfast. Two days in a row! Must be some kind of record.

Was both less than pleased and a bit thrilled when I was awoken around 4am by the baby practising for the Olympic gymnastics team in there! DH still hasn't been able to feel it move. I think he's a bit upset about that.

I'm off work today, in honour of my birthday. Just waiting for a package delivery and then I am off to the shops! Have a lovely day all.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 06/02/2009 08:46

Happy birthday Tee!

Myneaux · 06/02/2009 08:51

Morning all

Am so glad its friday !....after being full of energy last week I have been exhausted and starving all this week...think little bean must be having a growth spurt.

Thanks for the recommendations on breast pads MrsMcJnr I will definately get some at the weekend. Luckily leakage seems to be very small at the moment (still havent mentioned it to DH MrsMcJnr you really must tell us how you manage such comprehensive posts...do you read them all and make notes of what to say to everyone?...very impressive anyhow !

I am a first time mum too and found the whole 'what pram to buy' issue so confusing...I was just so desperate not to make the wrong decision and regret it (especially as you read posts from people who are on their 8th pram !!). In the end I decided to give myself a break and buy a travel system and make life easier for myself....and if it turned out to be a disaster it wasnt the end of the world.

At the end of the day you can do loads of research but until you actually have the baby you dont really have a clue what you are going to need. Everyone kept saying to me 'think about what you will use it for...will you go for walks, on the bus or use the car etc etc (how am I supposed to know?)'...other said just buy a sling or a maclaren....

We did economise (ish !) by going for the Mothercare My3 rather than a Quinny or Bugaboo. If you havent had a look at these yet I would recommend it....they are a modern design and come with all the bits (footmuff, shopping basket etc) which the trendier brand names sting you for....and you dont need a seperate carry cot which is good if you dont have much space like me. It goes with the Maxi Cosi but we havent bought that yet. I accept that I wont use it for more than 12 months (it is heavy and there isnt much room to grow)but there you go...I feel better having made a decision

We even managed to fit the chassis in the boot of our mini cooper without removing the wheels...no room for anything else tho but it was the best I could hope for. And I let DH choose it in red to match the mini and our VW camper.

June2009 · 06/02/2009 08:58

myneaux you've got my dream cars :D

well, still wondering wether we can or not make this morning's appointment with the midwife because of the snow, the main road looks gritted but it looks very dodgy getting there from our house, our road is just awful and the driveway ever so slippery.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 06/02/2009 09:00

Myneaux How cool are you with a Mini Cooper and a VW Camper? My DH would be very at the Camper!

ermintrude13 · 06/02/2009 09:03

Morning all

On the subject of prams and buggies etc. it is really worth looking at second hand - via Ebay, charity shops or, best of all, NCT sales. They sometimes have pristine travel systems/carseats/buggies etc. which have been bought by people who have gone through all the umming and ahing some of you are involved in right now and discovered that they made the wrong decision.

I know that some people who are expecting their PFB will turn up their noses at second-hand - I wouldn't have dreamt of it for DC#1, but then we were on 2 full-time incomes. But for those on a 2nd, 3rd or more DC, and during this credit crunch time, there are very good quality bargains to be had.

It's getting slushy but still v cold here in the midlands. Hope some of you get sunshine

Myneaux · 06/02/2009 09:18

Ineed Im sure your DH would not be jealous at how much it costs to maintain or how often it breaks down !

Its a 1969 camper and we imported it from the states so its in good condition...but we are on our 2nd engine...the last one died on our way to France last year...we had a 3 week road trip planned and got as far as the grantham in Lincolnshire (we live in leeds) before being towed back !

They are loevly cars but totally unpractical for babies....the mini is tiny and the camper is massive (but has no seat belts !). I keep thinking there is plenty of time to be practical later on....cant give up all the trappings of my single life just yet.

flynn1984 · 06/02/2009 09:18

Morning all

On the discussion of prams I ordered a Silver Cross Linear Freeway anyone know if that one is good? If not I can easily change my pram choice. I was given the car seat which makes it into a travel system for free off my Brother and SIL and it's practically brand new.

Also just wondering does anyone recommend a good pair of jeans preferably over the bump jeans, I have 2 pairs which sit on the bump but now they dig into my bump when I sit and makes me feel really sick, and when I walk they fall down...any help would be great!

ermintrude13 · 06/02/2009 09:25

flynn, H&M do jeans with a big elasticated band that comes up over the waist ans bump. They work best with a bigger bump so they kept falling down earlier on but now I find them much more comfy. I also have a pair of H&M with elasticated side panels that come up very high but they're from my sister who bought them 3 yrs ago so not sure if they still do that style.

I don't like the under bump ones either, they do cut in just in the wrong place, ouch! I'm currently wearing ancient (10 yr old) Bloomin Marvellous ones which go right up to below my bust like old men's trouers and are the most comfortable things I've got. Might be worth checking M&S too.

LittleSarah · 06/02/2009 09:48

So far I am not a fan of any maternity jeans but my Gap over the bump or alright I admit!

ermintrude - I loved getting new stuff for dd I admit but did accept second hand, what with being a young, poor, single parent to be! My moses basket/car seat/ travel cot were all second hand last time. Have been given nowt so far and am a bit disappointed!

Anyone thought of going to NCT nearly new sales? I didn't last time but my cousin thinks they're great, got all her reusable nappies at one last time (unworn just washed I believe?!). There's one near me on the 14th so I'll be toddling along there to see what I can see.

LittleSarah · 06/02/2009 09:51

Ooh, and happy birthday Tee!

Have a lovely day off.

flynn1984 · 06/02/2009 10:08

Tee sorry I thought your birthday was yesterday!

Happy Birthday and hope you have a good day!!!

Tee2072 · 06/02/2009 10:24

It was yesterday, but thanks! I couldn't take yesterday off due to meetings, so I took today off instead. And now I'm stuck inside waiting for this package!

dreamydowler · 06/02/2009 11:22

Hi Everyone
tee hope you enjoyed your birthday yesterday and are able to venture out shopping today. Its so annoying when you wait in all day for packages that dont turn up. Im getting some really strong movements now too and baby seems to respond to me and my dp talking at night so we have to whisper so as not to wake baby up My partner cant feel baby yet either through my layers of flab but I remember with my last two girls him getting kicked in the back a few times so Im sure he will have ample oppertunity again this time. Hope you take care in the snow must be great to see some finally.

littlesarah have you looked on ebay for things close to home and also you could organise a baby shower which is a great evening and a dead cert for people buying presents My sister did my last one and asked guests for two gifts one for a basket they put together for baby anything from cotton wool to clothes and another gift for a basket they put together for me which had pampering products chocs magazines wine etc in I couldnt believe how generous people were. We also had a babys nappy fund raffle with a prize at the end and numerous other games it was lovely.

Myenaux we too are having to rethink vehicles. We got rid of our minibus as some of the older ones started learning to drive and didnt particularly want to come on days out with us anyway and went to a 7 seater which had to go unfortunately when it died befor xmas We have been managing with a normal family car but with new baby dd age 2 granddaughter age 1 dd age 5 ds age 10 and ds age 16 me and dp I think we are at least looking at another 7 seater and probably another minibus. Im glad you said you have been starving this week I just dont seem to be able to satisfy my hunger and the odd cravings have been coming back Had a huge craving for apple pie last night but had to make do with an apple muller rice which wasnt quite the same

zookat welcome to the madmomma house Im really pleased for you that the scan went well and how lovely to be having a boy. we are hoping to find out babys sex at our next scan at 28 weeks.

MrsMc You poor thing you sound like you are having a rough time at the moment with an awful lot to think about. The bad weather can really make you feel trapped in more ways than one too Perhaps you and your friends who are going through a rough time too could organise a girly pamper night with a dvd and chocs and hot chocolate at one of your houses buy some facial packs and body scrubs and butters and make sure to choose a comedy not a weepy. I hope you get sorted with a new place soon and your dh secures his job too Im sure all will be fine but I know thats no consolation.

Hope everyone else is doing well and not suffering too much with spd or from this awful weather. My dp seems to be on the mend now and has some more blood tests to go for in a couple of weeks. He is looking for a day job as the permanent nights arent helping. Ds age 10 comes home from wales today hopefuly feels like hes been away for ages. My dd age 17 has got 3 interviews for unis in the next few weeks still waiting to hear from my granddaughters mums[dd age 19] unis. My eldest daughters partner has got in and my sister has got in too. Everyone is busy busy busy.

June2009 · 06/02/2009 11:56

We made it to the appointment on time and they were busy but still saw us pretty quickly too wich was all impressive.
We got to hear the baby's heartbeat and dh said he wanted a doppler

She filled in a form to refer me to obstetrics physio, hopefully thy'll be in touch soon. I'm a bit worried she just signed me up to a physio workshop as she said "they do a session here" and there is one on the list, can only wait and see.

It turns I'm 23 weeks tomorrow, and not sunday as I thought. I've been counting how far along I am in weeks (as in, every sunday, I add a week.) but this mw pointed out some months are shorter and I should account for that. That was probably the one thing about pregnancy I thought I'd got the hang of.

I wished they gave us a little cardboard wheel like theones they use to work out the dates/weeks.

We came back and the dishwasher decided to drain its water in the kitchen instead of outside. I'm glad I hadn't switched it on before we left!

Lots of work to do today, I'll try and catch up with everyone at the weekend!

Tee hope your package turns up soon and you can enjoy some shopping!

juicy it's a "car safety" workshop as opposed to "car seat" (blame my mushy baby brain) and it's at chase farm hospital, there is no phone number though, my mw booked it in for me. (but didn't tell me when it is either.)

LittleSarah · 06/02/2009 13:02

June - Very confusing indeed! Surely though if you are due on a Sunday, as I see you are, it makes sense to add a week on a Sunday? I'm with you on this one. (Technically I am due on 7th too but I've kept due date as the 6th as I've already had to change it and I expect to have a slightly smaller than average baby anyway like last time. Ie they changed it one day due to measurements, and even though the sonographer said it didn't make it a difference when the midwives saw it it automatically became right you're due on the 7th.... I think it might be a few days early anyway, hope so!)

dreamydowler - I like your nappy fund raffle, that's a great idea. I totally want another baby shower now!

Just been trying to sort out maternity pay at work. Odd situation. I got this job (comms advisor) through uni and when they offered it to me they asked me to sign up to the temp agency they used for all temp staff. This I did so I am technically employed by agency. When I spoke agency lady she mentioned that my company were moving agencies in May so that her agency would pay me until then, then it would shift to new agency. That didn't seem right though, after all my agency is my employer (and I won't be going back to my job after baby, was only temp job anyway). So why would new agency organise whom I've never been employed by!? Anyway, my boss here agreed (and the new agency too) that original agency should pay me throughout. So basically she is going to sort it out with agency and make sure that happens, I really hope that it works okay, I know I'm entitled to it but I don't want to get cut off in May and have to start arguing with people!

Sorry for long explanation, it is blinkin' confusing I know.

Tee2072 · 06/02/2009 13:47

My package did indeed show up! It was my birthday present from my brother and his family and it is a slow cooker! I am so stoked because I've wanted one for ages. How great will it be to slam some meat and veg in there in the morning and forget about it after the baby is born?

I did get to go shopping and got a lovely lace over jersey dress at Mamas and Papas for half off! So that was cool! And now I have something to wear when I got out tonight for my birthday.

june my dates has moved around so much after scans that I just said 'forget it' and count Tuesdays as the baby's 'age day'. No one is ever, so far as I can tell, born on their due date anyway!

I think I forgot to post the new pictures of my belly and my 20 week scan for you guys!

baby belly!

20 weeks!

questions2008 · 06/02/2009 15:20

hi all! i've been lurking from the very beginning as I can never think of anything useful to add but we just had our 20 week scan yesterday and I've started to feel movements from baby now so it's starting to feel much more real and I thought I could join in now!

zozokat I'm also at St Mary's, due 20th June and hoping to use the birth centre there. Although I don't live close by, the hospitals near me aren't very good for maternity or so I've heard.

Oh and I'm having a boy! The scanner had a good poke round looking for his bits and it's definitely a boy!! The scan was normal for everything else and he's bang on average for the various measurements. She showed us everything, I think the best bit was the spine, it looked so beautiful and complicated! I can't believe he was just some cells multiplying a few weeks ago!

As for prams/pushchairs, we quite like the look of the M&P Ziko Herbie particularly as it's currently 50% off, making it 275 all in. But feels too early to be buying pushchairs and the offer runs out 20 feb or something, so not sure what we're going to do yet. I'm looking forward to carrying him in a sling too although as it's my first I don't know how practical that's going to be but I love the idea of having close all the time.

Ooh I do have a question though, I asked for my Mat B1 form yesterday and the midwife said they give them out after 24 weeks, but I thought my employer had to have them in by 25 weeks, so not sure if she was right or what? she said it's down to legal stuff?

June2009 · 06/02/2009 15:26

LittleSarah I've just been counting weeks on a caldendar and I can't get my head round what mw said, even if some months are shorter than others there's always the same amount of days between two Sundays and my way of counting weeks were confirmed everytime at the scans and mw appointments. Dh agrees what mw says doesn't seem to make sense. Maybe she got confused because we're the 6th today and she kept saying I'm 22+6.
Or maybe I'm wrong.
I'm going to carry on going one week up every Sunday. (What a rebel, huh).

Dh and I were both premature (by around a month) but mw said that shouldn't have an impact on my due date.

I hope you sort out your maternity pay, you could ask on the employment issue thread
I'm not sure where I stand with it now, we didn't get a chance to sort out a new accountant yet.
