HI there. Scan was fab and the little bean is well and happy in there. Unfortunately the legs were crossed so the sonographer couldn't see what it was. I have a low-lying placenta so I have to have another scan at 34 weeks to see if it's moved or not, so I might be able to find out then (though at my friend's recent 34 week scan it was impossible to see what anything was as the baby is so big you just get an ear or an eye or a foot - the rest is too big to see). The sonographer was a bit rubbish though and struggled to work out anything. We were gutted when he walked out and said our name as he also did our 12 week scan and had to have all his measurements checked (and they were all wrong). As we saw him go in the room, I turned to DH and said 'if he can't even find the nuchal fold, how is he going to find the baby's willy/lack of?) and low and behold....

DH is convinced it is a boy as he thought the sonographer was swaying towards this, but he said at the end 'I can't see any boy bits' but then said that he couldn't see any bits.....

Trying not to be gutted as obviously the most important thing is that the baby is well and healthy and that all looks good (apart from the placenta thing). Am a bit gutted though.....

ermintrude13 · 28/01/2009 10:49

Ineed, glad you saw your babe and as you say, the fact it's healthy and well is the most important thing. You might find out the sex at the later scan - hope your placenta shifts! What a crap sonographer though.

All these babies with crossed legs - do you think they need a wee and don't want to do it while you're looking?

leaky timing BD to favour boy or girl is an imprecise art so you did very well! A doc told me it could make the chance of conceiving your preferred sex something like 70/30 rather than 50/50 so worth a try if you're very keen but not foolproof by any means because there are so many variables. When we resumed TTC I'd just come off treatment for my endemetriosis and my (usually v regular) periods were all over the place - 24 day cycle one month, 32 the next etc.- so I'm not completely sure when I ovulated and can't even make an educated guess about what this one is - but don't mind whether we get pink or blue this time anyway.

Tee2072 · 28/01/2009 11:01

Hi All

Well, trousers that I needed my bella band for last week, are fine this week, so I may not be gaining any weight on the scale, but something is going on in there! Almost time to adjust these trousers with no interior buttons buttoned!

Ineed glad you had a good scan. Just under a week 'til mine!

At my early pregnancy class last week the midwife actually said something to the effect 'our ultrasound techs are not the most chatty bunch, but they do know what they are doing!'

chocciedooby · 28/01/2009 11:37

Hi everyone. Wow this is a busy and fast moving thread!

MrsMc Yes I had a double buggy that my SIL loaned me. It was a M & P twin Aria and was nice and light and handy. My DS's are 16 months apart so needed it. Used it for unitl DS1 was about 3 and he never minded walking anywhere. When he didn't want to walk the buggy board did the trick.

Tee speaking of trouser problems, I went out yesterday and purchase some "Big" Pants . I have been feeling really uncomfortable and my trousers kept falling down and taking my pants down with them!!! NOw that I am wearing my passion killers the trousers are firmly staying put

Congratulations Leaky!!!! I am so pleased for you.I am in the same boat as you with 2 DS's but am not going to find out at scan what we are having. I do have a feeling its another boy even though my symtoms have been a little different and I'm still getting some MS during the day.

We BD'd 2 days before OV and the day after so who knows what it will be. I have had to put everything into perspective these last few weeks as our neighbours little girl (3) is seriously ill in hospital with brain damage. I realise that all that really is important is to have a healthy baby no matter what it is. Neighbours cannot have any more kids and have the 2 DD's. It is so sad and I am very grateful for all that I have already.

Sorry for that side track.

flynn1984 · 28/01/2009 13:58

ineed good that your scan went reasonably well!

Just a quick question...my mum has told me on several occassions that i dont look pregnant i just look fat i take it doing ab exercises is out of the question when your pregnant? I need to do something to help me look more 'pregnant'
i know my mum doesn't need mean it in nastiness but I thought I looked alright considering i've only put on roughly 8-10lbs since the middle of September but now I feel terribly down, my weight has always been an issue with me and I hope to be able to lose it quickly after june I'm aiming to get back down to my wedding weight of 11st (cant believe I was 11 stone 2 years ago)so 4 stone needing to be lost

ermintrude13 · 28/01/2009 14:07

Flynn, what a charming thing for your mum to say! Honestly, mums can be v thoughtless - or sometimes a bit mean, even sub-consciously I reckon. The extent to which you 'look pregnant' depends on all sorts of things to do with size and bodyshape, and while very skinny women will have a pronounced low bump, lots of us have a combination of belly and bump out front - my displaced stomach juts out right below my bust, making me look fat AND pregnant!

Abs excercises are not a good idea, certainly not sit-up type moves which exert too much pressure on the uterus. Stretches and light aerobic exercises are fine, as long as you don't overdo it - and as long as you're not pushing yourself harder physically than you did pre-preg.

Try not to worry too much, stick to as healthy a diet as you can manage and maybe next time your mum says something like that suggest to her that it's not terribly helpful...? All these hormones that are whizzing about can make even a casual comment depressing, so hope you can cheer up and look forward to June safe in the knowledge that a LOT of that weight is going to disappear all in one go! [smile}

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 28/01/2009 14:35

You poor thing Flynn. Mums can say the most insensitive things some time. My mum says similar insensitive things...

Please don't worry (easier said than done) - that's definitely not good for baby.

If it makes you feel any better, I carry my babies really low, which makes me look like Mr Greedy and not pregnant at all. I often look at skinnier pregnant women and envy their neat little basketball tummies.... xx

Hi Everyone and thanks for all your well wishes for Dp. He is taking a couple of days off work and we went out for a lovely lunch after the scan this morning. Baby is doing well No soft markers or any other problems thank goodness. Baby measuring good size but not huge for dates. The baby was lying on its back so the sonographer couldnt see anything dangling but said she couldnt be 100% sure if it was a girl. As we were waiting to go in to our scan a lady came out and was absolutely shocked to be told she was having a boy after being told at her 20 week scan she was having a girl. She said she had bought an awful lot of girly pink things and would now have to return them. Because of my age and previous large baby I have to be scanned again at 28 and 34 weeks so Im going to ask again then before rushing out to buy anything.

ermintrude made me laugh to think of your little hermaphrodite baby lol

Ineedmore Im pleased your scan went well. I had a low lying placenta with my second pregnancy all be it a long time ago now as she will be 19 this april but it had moved up as my womb grew and was fine at my follow up scan Hopefuly things will be fine and it gives you another excuse to see baby .

Flynn Dont worry about your weight I too will have at least 4-5 stone to lose after this pregnancy another reason for more scans as my BMI is above the normal range. Maybe we can support each others weight loss afterwards. I would like to get married to my DP so really need to lose a lot.

Hope everyone else is feeling well today at least the weather seems a bit kinder and the mornings and evenings dont seem as dark woohoo it will be summer before we know it

daisy5 · 28/01/2009 16:20

dreamy - glad to hear your dp is taking time out and that your scan went well. Ineedmore - pleased to hear about your scan too.

flynn - maybe your mum is just not thinking before talking - first time around I went through a few weeks of feeling as though I just looked chubby - but it grows fast now so soon enough you will look pregnant.

leaky & dreamy - you mention getting a scan at about 32 weeks because you are 'older'. I am 42 but am not getting one then so am a little curious - over what age did they consider to be 'older' at your local NHS?

ermintrude13 · 28/01/2009 19:06

daisy5 I'm not getting a 32 week scan either and am your age (ok, a week or so older, ahem). Here (midlands) they only do scans after 20 weeks for emergency problems like bleeds or pain, or to check on things like anterior placenta, breech babies or to rule out previous complications (like Dreamy's big baby, or for women who've previously had late miscarriages or stillbirths).

Got my 20-week next Tues and am having to explain to v excited DC that no, it's not a good idea for them to take time off school to come along!

Tee2072 · 28/01/2009 19:31

I have no idea if I'm getting any scans after my 20 week. Of course, being diabetic, I get scanned a lot anyway! Almost every OB appointment I've had has included a scan! Personally, I'd rather not have diabetes and get scanned less!

June2009 · 28/01/2009 19:42

(sorry this might be a bit long and boring) but flynn try not to worry too much about your weight.
My dad, on my wedding day pointed out to everyone around that he was slim, my mum was slim so naturally I must have taken from his grandma. (?) I'd lost a lot of weight for my wedding and looked pretty decent!! I was a bit but in the end just thought it was funny that he was so undiplomatic.

It takes time to come off but watching what you eat and exercising really does work. I have lost 5 stones over 3 or 4 years and wouldn't be scared if i had to do it again.
I really do think if you take your time and actually change your eating and exercising habit for good then you can keep it off for good.

It started when I had a health check up and my cholesterol was borderline which scared me shitless as my older brother died of a heart attack at 33yo because his cholesterol was too high and although he was warned years before he didn't care (carpe diem and all that).

For probably 2 years I used to exercise everyday for 20 minutes which really honestly wasn't that much of a commitment - and I work full time - then added a couple of classes at the weekend (body combat/body pump/spinning).
The hardest bit was to get into a routine and force myself to go at the beginning, after that when it is part of your routine it really is a lot easier and enjoyable, and motivating especially when you see the weight come off and feel healthier, drop down a size, buy nicer clothes etc.

I also had a personal trainer once or twice a week for 6 months before our wedding and lost over 2 stones then. It was good to have her to push&motivate me so I knew how fast or how long I could run, how much I coudl lift and generally do and then do it on my own, really worth it.

I didn't do any diet where you eat liquid or anything like that. I really watched my portions, didn't eat chocolate or deep fried stuff (I still don't mainly) and for a while I cut out bread and pasta, only because I coudn't just have one slice, or a reasonable portion I had to have the whole loaf and third helpings with loads of butter and I really needed to break that habit completely.
I started re-introcuding it when I knew I was able to control that.

Although the first two weeks were pretty miserable I quickly realised I didn't actually need as much food as I thought! (sparkpeople.com is a good site for understanding your portions).

After the pregnancy work out with a trainer how much calories you need to eat per day and how much exercise you need to do each week to get to your target weight. Then write down what you eat and what exercise you do and find your balance (this site works the calories out for you.)

I went on the scales yesterday and put 14 pounds since my first weigh in in September, am 21+3 weeks now.

Onto today's scan: Brilliant experience at UCLH, it was very clean, and although they were running over an hour late the people there were really nice and reassuring.
They said the choroid plexus cysts soft markers are really common and more and more pg women don't even get referred further if there are no other markers.
They are still there, may or may not disappear but it's basically normal. All the other measurements are fine.

I'm definitely having a girl
I am so over the moon about it. (I would equally have been over the moon about a boy, it's weird isn't it, it was always going to be one or the other, what did I expect??).
They said she was on the tall side, (dh is tall.)

So big sigh of relief here for me. I'll try and catch up properly later!

flynn1984 · 28/01/2009 19:53

Hi June thank you for your reassuring words, I will check out that website you mentioned I know my mum wasn't being nasty just kinda gets to me. The one thing I gave up on was spin fit and karate and can't wait till LO is here so I can start back...I'm going back to karate this saturday for light exercises (think I've siad that every week since my 12 week scan )

June been thinking about you all day and glad your scan went well and that your were given more reassurance about the cysts and that your having a girl...theres going to be a lot of June girls I think

dreamydowler · 28/01/2009 20:37

Hi June Im so glad your scan went well I nope you can now relax and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy

daisy5 · 28/01/2009 21:44

Wonderful wonderful news june. It is so exciting isn't it.

MrsMcJnr · 28/01/2009 22:04

Exhausted tonight ladies, been to Gibralter for the day with my Mum and DS and bought lots of pink things in the sales DS didn?t sleep much though and was a little cranky at times

Ah Flynn got you, well MN is my relaxation after looking after my little boy all day Yes, ab exercises are out, you could end up with separated muscles if you do them and they are really hard to remedy, tell your Mum to get off your case ? spoken by a daughter who has a mother always on her case mine made me feel like a useless, frumpy mess today she doesn?t mean to but it happens regardless

Littlesarah ? isn?t it funny? Last time round I had no sickness and felt great and I had a boy, this time I have been pretty sick and it?s a girl! I have to say, more people seem to have it that way round that I know.

Ermintrude ? LOL at the hermaphrodite joke, oh dear!

Ineedmore ? glad all is well with your baby hope the placenta moves up, I too am hoping for that as mine is too low at the moment. I had growth scans every 4 weeks with DS right until 38 weeks and you still get a good look at the baby each time so I think you?ll get another chance to find out the sex sorry that you got a crappy sonographer

Choccie ? thanks for the buggy info awful to hear about your neighbours I was told something yesterday by a friend that has made me so grateful for what I have (and a little wobbly about what I am hoping for)

Dreamy ? glad all went well today and that your DP is taking it easy. I ask at every scan if the baby is still a girl! The Dr thinks I am mad but I am just giving him the chance to check and confirm! He has even put it in writing now that my baby is a girl

June ? yay! So glad you got some peace of mind today and congrats on expecting a little girl ! at your Dad?s comment at your wedding, not nice but good on you for being able to see a funny side.

Daisy, Leaky, Tee ? hello

June2009 · 28/01/2009 23:11

I thought I'd check wether any of you are getting pains in the inner thighs?

Reading about it and it sounds like SPD

I was uncomfortable when I got changed this afternoon putting my trousers on, I was slow going up the stairs. Next appointment with the midwife is at the beginning of Feb, I'm not sure wether I should call her (or the GP) earlier to get it checked.

I have been going up and down the stairs loads yesterday and we had to walk quite a bit to the appointment and back today so dh suggested it coud be because I haven't done that much evercise in 5 months.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 29/01/2009 06:09

June - I suffer chronically with SPD (sometimes referred to as PGP). Is the pain all the way down your thighs, or at the top (right where the bone is at the front of your fanjo)? Pain down the thighs is really common and I have many friends who suffered this ligament pain when pregnant who didn't have any other symptoms of SPD.

About 50% of women have some form of SPD, so it wouldn't be unusual. Only about 3% are completely immobile with it (bloody typical that I should be one of them!)I was bed-bound for the last weeks of my pregnancy with DS and I have it now (though nowhere near as severe as yet). My SPD pain is right at the front of the pelvis, but I also suffer round the back of my pelvis (right in my bottom). I do also get inner thigh pain too.

Go to GP before the weekend and ask for a referral to a physio who is experienced in ante-natal physiotherapy, they're the only ones who can really say whether it's SPD or not. In my experience most (but certainly not all) doctors are horribly misinformed about SPD and can't really make a diagnosis (if they've even heard of it... I kid you not ).

Got DH to agree that if I'm still as gutted by next Wed about not finding out the sex yesterday, that we can pay for a private scan ! There's a place fairly near that charges £65 for a half an hour sexing scan... hooray!

Had horrible insomnia again last night - I've been up since 4am. Grr.... I'm an old pro at it though, and suffered worse with it before I was pregnant so I'm used to it.... as used to it as you can be.....

snowwombat · 29/01/2009 10:26

hi girls,
just a quick msg as my internet keeps crashing. Great to hear how well all the scans are going!congrats everyone!
june so pleased that 2nd scan a much more positive experience. I 2nd ineeds advice- get thee to GP for obstetric physio referral (I am a physio). A women's health physio is essential as they have a speciality in treating antenatal problems. Avoid stairs, and try getting pants/trousers on sitting down rather than standing.
Right off to bed with a fan on- so hot here-was at the beach today! Scan tomorrow- will check in then.

June2009 · 29/01/2009 11:09

I feel better today but slighty worried about this, no other pain than inner thighs though. It feels more towards the tope than down my thighs.
I think I may be taking the title of expert worrier strawberrysam.

Shit I'm gonna have to get a wax booked in for down there I think!

Is this covered by NHS if I get a referral?

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 29/01/2009 11:30

Absolutely - you get about 6 sessions, and then if you need more, they can re-refer you. In fact, last pregnancy, I was seen at a private clinic (under NHS). This time round I'm seen at the hospital under a mad, but brilliant, physio. I've got exercises to do to ease the pain and try and strengthen my core stability, and she checks the alignment of my pelvis and how much flexibility I have.

Oh, and I just take my trousers off in a session, so unless you are gorilla-like down there, I'd say you are pretty safe to reveal yourself to the physio!!

Oh and start those pelvic floor exercises. It really helps to strengthen everything up - and in turn helps the SPD. You can also clench your bum cheeks when climbing stairs or rolling over in bed (agony!) or loading/unloading dishwasher etc. Keep legs together when getting in and out of the car. My last physio said that you had to imagine you were wearing a really short skirt and no pants and so when you move, you need to keep your dignity intact.... it works for me!!

OP posts:
Ineedmorechocolatenow · 29/01/2009 11:34

P.S. Snowwombat It's pretty miserable here in the UK - 5 degrees and drizzly.... very jealous of your beach visit!! Good luck at your scan x

OP posts:
June2009 · 29/01/2009 11:36

ineed gorilla like sounds like a fair description LOL &

Thanks for that, I'm off to make some calls....

daisy5 · 29/01/2009 11:40

june - the NHS should absolutely refer you for a 'down there' wax june. Especially if baby not moving, ante natal depression, Valentines bonus....etc.

June2009 · 29/01/2009 12:12

heh, daisy I can just imagine the GP's face if I asked him for a "bikini wax referral" LOL.
Well, GP said to lie down and if it doesn't settle down within a couple of days to go and see him on Monday so he can refer me.

Wax booked (without the help of the NHS) ;)
