Sorry, original title.

Anyway, hello everyone, I'm due 6th July (although no scan yet, so date will probably move). Excited but knackered and queasy so far, although having read (some!) of the last thread I've got off pretty easily so far.

NattyPlus2andAHalf · 04/01/2009 13:33

cos i have group B strep. they wont let u have a homebirth in case of complications. very annoying.
not even allowed in a birthing center, it HAS to be hospital. thats why i am booked in at one of the best in london even if it is 8 miles away.

Phoenix · 04/01/2009 14:48

Natty - I was told i had Group B strep with ds, i'd never heard of it before. I'm assuming it will still be an issue in this pg too, i'll find out at hospital appointment/scan tomorrow.

woollyjo · 04/01/2009 15:15

Hi Christmasiana, I'm going for a home birth as long as everything continues fine. MW is very pro and I hate hospitals.

NattyPlus2andAHalf · 04/01/2009 16:15

pheonix it wasnt screened for in the hospital i had DS, so i dont know if i had it then, but he was born fine.
didnt get the antibiotics in time with my DD either, yet she was fine.
to be honest im not overly convinced to the "dangers" of it. ppl must have varying degrees of it or something cos both of my kids were fine.

Phoenix · 04/01/2009 16:22

Know what you mean there are so many conflicting stories about Group B strep. When i went for my 1st hospital appointment with ds they said it had been picked up on a swab at some time in the past, explained a bit about it and said i would have to have iv ab's when in labour. I did get the ab's and ds was fine.

A friend of a friend recently had a baby and she didn't get the ab's and her baby was very ill with the infection. He's ok now but i think it was touch and go for a while.

NattyPlus2andAHalf · 04/01/2009 16:41

i know u just dont know what to think.
both of mine didnt get an infection, but im terrifed that my labour will be as quick as last time (3hrs) and i wont get there in time AGAIN.
im going to ask the consultant if i can be induced/schedule a section. this is because if each labour halves, i will give birth in the car. and what is the baby IS born not breathing cos of the infection?
very scary, and ever so frustrating becuase it makes me dread labour. not cos of the pain, i can cope with that, but the no knowing if i will have a baby to go home with.

ephrinedaily · 04/01/2009 17:43

Wow Natty that was a quick labour. Never got tested for Group B last time - as going to do a private test but didn't make 36 weeks! HAd IV antibiotics in labour anyway due to early waters breaking, and it was fine. I can see the worry with your last labour being short though. Can't they retest you to see if you've still got it? Or do you always have it?

Christmasiana - I had my scan (late) before booking in (very late!) in my first pregnancy. Useless!

Re nuchals - I didn't have one with DS and I didn't want one with this pg but they did it anyway! B**stards. As I've already said it was a 'bad' result anyway, but we've decided not to have amnio etc., just further scans.

Good luck to everyone waiting for scans.

Don't worry about it ActivityApple I supposedly have it and don't know that much about it. I was never offered to be re-tested in my last pg they just said it had shown on a past swab and i would need ab's in labour. I know a bit more this time so can ask more about testing etc.

I cooked and ate a big dinner today and am paying for it now. I feel sick and have a bit of diahorrea (sp?)

Christmasiana I would quite like a homebirth but it's my first so I'm too much of a scaredy-cat if anything was to go wrong.
My friend's wife just had one (her 3rd baby) and she said it was great and said she would defo recommend it.
Before I was pg I didn't understand why anybody would want to, but now I quite like the idea of it x

christmasiana · 04/01/2009 21:29

hmmm homebirth is so tempting... would I think be so much more calming...

yes the Tara Lee dvd is a pregnancy one. i like it very much. the other one i used last pregnancy that i liked was Shiva Rea Prenatal Yoga. Bit more focus on breathing with Tara Lee and slightly longer, also has a Gowri Motha visualisation and extra relaxation bits that I haven't looked at yet. Shiva Rea flows a bit better but less focus on breathing. Whatever floats your boat really, i like both of them.

Do you think my nuchal scan results are OK, I am worrying about them. Is it just cos I panic at everything when pg?

I actually very nearly went to a yoga class this morning, it starts at 9.30 am (on a sunday!!) so I racked my brains for an excuse and finally came up with one!
Think I'll try and make it there next week tho
Do u find that yoga gives u more energy? I'm hoping that it might.

Misspaella · 04/01/2009 22:00

Happy New Year all!
Hope everyone is feeling better and had a good Christmas.

Just had a quick scan over the chat - welcome newbies!

I am finally feeling better - yah! Looking more like 4m pg than 3m - boo! I am just about squeezing my pg bum into my 'normal' clothes. I don't give it much time til I am wearing some stretchy clothes. Funny - this being my 3rd pg I want to delay mat clothes as long as possible. With my 1st pg I went into mat jeans by 12 weeks (more out of excitement than need)

Anyway night and speak soon.

xxhunnyxx · 04/01/2009 22:48

How sad am I? I'm looking forward to going to work tomorrow purely because I want to wear my new maternity work trousers! Not worn my work clothes for 2 weeks so decided to try them on yesterday to make sure they fit, they go on (just) but I think the button would be at risk of flying off. I seem to have suddenly popped out over the last week but strangely haven't actually put on any weight in the last 2 weeks .

BonzoDoodah · 04/01/2009 23:14

Natty - I took the test for GroupB Strep with my first pregnancy and came back positive. The people in the hospital were a bit scheptical as they said that you can test positive for it at 36 weeks but then it can be gone by 40 weeks. It isn't a permanant thing. I did a lot of reading about it and decided I wanted the antibiotics anyway (bad in one way - they gave me horrendous diarrhoea ... but the good thing was that that ended up in me in a private ward - PEACE!!!)
Anyway - I really can't see why stesting potitive now should stop you from having a home birth. From what I gathered the baby can get infected in the birth canal and then go on to develop the disease - it is a bacterial infection so is not like a chemical that has an immediate effect like a burn - it has to multiply up which takes time. So as long as the baby had the antibiotics pretty soon after the birth it should be ok. I'd really push hard (har har) for the home birth if you want it ... seems like a very odd reason to deny you. There's more info here ...groupBstrep info and more importantly here .... GroupBstrep and home births

NattyPlus2andAHalf · 04/01/2009 23:30

bonzo thank you so much for this site. i was unaware you CAN have the IV at home, partically as i have had them b4 they know im not allergic.
best news ive ever had

BonzoDoodah · 04/01/2009 23:41

Brilliant! And maybe get a second test closer to the time of the birth? - you may be negative by then as the woman on that website was.

scully · 05/01/2009 09:33

Hi ladies, have only read the last page, so sorry if I haven't caught up on all the news. Had my nuchal scan today and all was good, due date stayed the same, baby has all the bits it should and downs risk is very low. Feeling very relieved

lucasnorth · 05/01/2009 09:58

Hi all

Re homebirth - I'm not really thinking about it. DD was born in hospital and I ended up having to have a forceps delivery (on gas and air -definitely not a good experience) because she turned her head as she entered the birth canal and got wedged in. I wouldn't have wanted to have been at home.

I'm trying to convince the NHS to let me have an elective caesarean this time round but the earliest they'll let me meet the consultant is mid next month , and no one else will discuss it with me. I've a feeling it's going to be a bit of a fight as they've been trying to get their caesarean rates down. But last time was bad; both at the time and afterwards (took about 9-10 months for the internal tear heal enough that sex was bearable again) and I really can't face going through it again. I'm frightened they're going to try and fob me off though; "oh it'll be much easier this time" "oh don't worry"... Also doesn't help that I read a newspaper article saying that there's a 45% risk of total incontinence at menopause if you've had a forceps delivery

Anyway, enough of my moaning. Happy New Year everyone, and congrats and welcome to all the newbies.

christmasiana · 05/01/2009 11:59

scully what risk numbers did they give you for downs, i am trying to work out what 'very low' risk is?

ephrinedaily · 05/01/2009 14:02

Christmasiana - your result - I think you said 1:1148? Is really really good - I definitely think yours is very low. They only think a result is significant if its 1:250 or less- some areas even won't do anything unless the result is 1:150!

If it helps - mine from nuchal alone was 1:27, from nuchal+bloods, 1:140. Which is considered high and significant blah blah blah... Relax! (until the next scan anyway - I know what its like!)

Misspaella · 05/01/2009 14:09

Lucas hopefully your 2nd birth will be easier. Mine definitely was. 1st birth with DS was a nightmare - I had an infection and needed IV antibiotics and DS needed to be in special care for observation with antibiotics as well. My placenta also partially broke inside and I had to have it manually removed in theatre and I don't even want to talk about the stitches inside and out or the hours of no dilation even with the syntocin. BUT with DD (my 2nd birth) it really was so much easier. A few hours of labour and only 30 min between my arrival to labour ward and DD being born.

I am of course praying this one is like no2....

Christmasiana I think my DH has stolen your weight. He has put on 4k in the last 6 weeks. Lol. On a serious note, I hope your are feeling better.

Hi to Natty Scully Bonzo and anyone else out there.

christmasiana · 05/01/2009 16:06

ephrinedaily thank you so much for your reassurance. i know i am being a worrier. i think now i've stopped feeling sick my little addled brain searches for something else o get in a spin about!

missp sadly MY DH has stolen my lost 4 kilos... actually this is partly true as he felt so bad for our hostess in Germany that I was throwing up and only eating the odd potato, he ate ALL the German liver sausage (barf barf). I saw him bend over and his tummy looks a little... big... I am trying to put him on a secret diet of winter soups and things... I got him out of bed to do yoga with me yesterday and he said he felt old and creaky... he was going to cycle to work today and then ducked out of it, naughty boy and took the car...

Your birth missp sounds horrible first time round. goodness. glad all went well for the second.

This time round I am imagining just has to be so much better for me too!

lucas i had no epidural (was one of the 0.1% for whom it didn't have any affect all three times they tried to put it in) and an induced 16 hour labour (at 39 weeks) and it ended in ventouse - no forceps thank goodness - but I can share part of your pain - had no idea about that menopause statistic thats hideous!

on with the pelvic floor exercises ladies!
