Effie you must be oozing prostaglandin.

Doesn't seem to be working on me!

Hi everyone, sorry I haven't been able to catch up but thought I'd pop in to let you know our news on our twins' arrival...

I went in to hospital Sunday afternoon as my waters had broken about 40 hours earlier and after giving a registrar a hard time about why (and insisting on having a consultant come and talk me through it all), I finally succumbed to drip induction (syntocinon sp?) around 6pm. Thankfully, our doula Marslady arrived soon after. I was able to move as contractions got started and I think that really helped - I managed to deliver the babies a few hours later at 11.20 (Hope Elizabeth, 7lb) and 11.45 (Victor George, 7lb11) and coped with gas and air. I have to say without Mars I would really have struggled - I was very scared of pushing and she really helped talk me through it so I felt that I could do it. The babies were in great health and I managed to have skin-to-skin and BF straight away with each.

Unfortunately, despite such a wonderful birth experience, things went rather wrong after that as I had a retained placenta. I lost a lot of blood and ended up having to have - how shall we put this - rather vigorous manual assistance to get rid of it. I have never felt pain like it (not sure why no extra pain relief offered, maybe because I hadn't had any for the birth?) and must confess I think most of Hackney probably heard me complaining about it. Anyway, I'm sure it will be a distant memory, after a few years of therapy... I lost a lot of blood and had a transfusion on Monday night, so could only come home yesterday. But, it was fine in the hospital, the postnatal care was much better than I expected, and it meant DD could have her birthday party yesterday without the DTs stealing the limelight. She is taking it all very well, actually, I really hope it lasts.

The DTs are currently in the pub with DH and DD, bit of a tradition in this family to get them in there asap. So far they are adorable, a bit yellow and lost 10% each of body weight but I suspect my supply of milk probably needs a bit of extra time to build up so I get to lie around feeding them and me constantly for a couple of weeks. ATM, we're all in love, and it's great. But then the sleepless nights haven't started yet...

Hope everyone else doing OK, I'll try and catch up soon.

Veggiemummy · 17/12/2008 18:45

Veggiemummy · 17/12/2008 18:48

Bird I'm still in shock how were you able to stand up in the last few weeks. Seriously I think you are amazing.

EffiePerine · 17/12/2008 19:34

Wow, what impressive weights for twins! Congratulations and well done on Mars for supporting you it. at no extra pain relief at the end, hope you're recovering now. Twins down the pub an excellent plan

majormoo · 17/12/2008 20:01

congrats GBB, Cat and Jam.
GBB the retained placenta sounds horrible.

Arti I tried acupuncture today. Has not done anything so far but did find it relaxing. Have a nasty cold so do not feel up to labour at the moment anyway.

reban · 17/12/2008 20:14

congratulations GBB jam and cat on your lovely new little ones!

My midwife phoned this morning and asked if she could come today to do sweep instead of tomorrow so of course i jumped at the chance. However i still dont think it has worked. Not as painful to do as last weeks but she was trying for ages to feel the babies head, in the end she said it felt like baby was backing away from her fingers! Anyway cervix was 2cm (but obviously not unusual when already have children) in a favourable position and paper thin but she could just not get to feel babies head. Have had lots of pain since but not contractions, just sore internal pain. So i basically think it was another failed sweep but cant quite believe this baby will make me wait much longer (fingers crossed emotion)
so off to bed with paracetamol to watch the villa hamberg match, although looking at the squad martin o'neil has put out we are going to get thrashed ... night night all xxxxx

JamInMyWellies · 17/12/2008 20:18

So here it is....

Took A to toddlers yesterday morning and by the end of the session was feeling a bit dodgy was getting a few niggles. Came home and just felt I should eat vast quantities of carbs. grin By half one-ish phone J to come home and then spent a couple of hours on the phone to mum while A was sleeping and J was coming home. By tea-time there was a bit of a pattern and by the time J had put A to bed they were coming thick and fast.

I did think I was being a bit of a wuss but phoned the birthing center and they said your not far away pop up and we will check you out. So off we trotted got the neighbours to come sit for half an hour. I really was quite amazed at the strength of the contractions but was convinced I would be sent home again.

Arrived there about 8.30 where I was given the dreaded internal the absoloutley lovely midwife said I was 4cm at which point they contractions were every 5mins and lasting about 1min 30sec. This was sadly where my self belief in doing it at the birthing center faltered. I paniced that this meant I was going to have another birth like A very painful and long drawn out. I was begging J to let me go to the hospital so I could have an epidural as I was convinced that I couldnt do it. The midwife persuaded me to try the birthing pool. Which I have to say was amazing I immediatley felt calmer and more in control continuing with my deep breathing. I still had a bit of self doubt and after a couple more horrid contractions I said I was deffo sure that I needed to transfer to hospital so an ambulance was called and I started to panic big time the contractions suddenly got much worse and I couldnt breathe through them anymore so I asked for pethadine. They said I could have some to get me to the hospital. So off we trotted in the ambulance little did I know the midwife was concerned that we wouldnt actually make it to hopsital and had told John that we may have to stop and deliver at the roadside shock. Anyway all the way to hospital they kept asking me was I feeling the bear down in my bottom, I was but was too scared to say so as it meant I wouldnt get my epidural.

We got to hospital around 10.30 by which time I was getting really pissed that there wasnt an anaesthetist (sp?) waiting for me to put the epi in. Met my new midwife a lovely Scottish girl! She wanted to asses where I was at again she said about 5cm I couldnt believe it. I was most pissed off and was being quite demanding about the epi wanting to know exactly how long etc. All the time still feeling this need to bear down and it felt like my stomach was going to explode. Then just as the anaesthetist arrived in the room I had another major contraction and my waters broke all over the bed. The midwife checked me again and I had gone from 5cm - 10cm just with having my waters go. So the epidural was off I was not happy. blush there was a few choice words coming out my mouth.

So i was very definitely feeling the need to push by this stage so was sucking on the gas and air like my life depended on it, still dont think it does anything to me but hey ho. I was pushing and pushing. The feeling was extraordinary I couldnt believe the sensations i was feeling but John and the midwife really kept me going. My breathing for the most part went totally to pot and I started shouting through the contractions I kept reminding myself that I needed to use my energy better as did the midwife and JOhn.

The head crowned and out it popped then they had to do a bit of manouvering of his body as he was trying to come out shoulders square on. The out came the rest of him. I was totally overwhelmed that i had done it with breathing (sort of) and what i felt had been useless gas & air and a shot of pethadine.

The midwife was awesome and cleaned me up a bit let him him lie on me for a good 30 mins before she weighed him. 9lb's of solid boy. grin

What made it a good experience is I know I gave it a bloody good try at the birthing centre and also that even though I transferred to hospital I still pretty much go the birth I had initailly aimed for. All thanks to a very determined John and 2 midwifes.

I was checked out and all my bits given a bit of a poke, I didnt tear! I delivered the placenta and the midwife spent time showing us the placenta and explaining the different bits of it etc. She then went and ran me a bath and made John a cup of tea and me a few rounds of toast and jam. shock A totally different exp to last time.

I am so happy he doesnt appear to have a tongue tie - hurrah. He fed on both boobs fairly soon after birth and then slept for a few hours I tried him again first thing and he suckled for a bit he has since not really fed or woken up much except when being changed or poked by the paed and hearing specialist. He has had several meconium poos and did a massive pee all over JOhn so am not worrying too much about him not feeding much today as he must have had pethadine coursing through his veins and am pretty sure A did the same the first 24hrs. He also has masses of gunk that he is spitting up.

Blimey mammouth post well done if you read through it.

JamInMyWellies · 17/12/2008 20:21

mahoosive congrats to Cat and GBB.

Veggiemummy · 17/12/2008 20:32

Well done Jam and 9lb what a big 'en. You may have been further on when you left the BC but the fear and transfer may have sent you backwards, though sound like you did yourself a favour giving birth on the roadside would not have been good.

OP posts:
kayzr · 17/12/2008 20:37

Congrats GBB They have such lovely names.

Jam Wow at your birth story. I'm glad you kind of got the birth you wanted.

I honestly think that having engorged breasts might be a big factor of why so many women tend to give up BF quite soon. It is so painful. Still determined to keep going until Friday and then hopefully past that too.

rosmerta · 17/12/2008 20:37

Evening all, thanks for the reassurance. I'm starting to feel a bit better about the decision, especially as ds2 is happier and more settled. We're just trying to sort out the sleeping as he seems to want to sleep all day & then not much at night but we can't get him to stay awake!

Have been lol at some of the MILisms on here. My mum told me that when my brother was born in the early 70s it was normal to wean them on Carnation milk! The mw was horrified when my mum asked if she should do the same with me!

cat, bird & jam congratulations! Can't wait to hear the details.

verso am loving your xmas name! I think you singing in the choir sounds great, especially to get some 'you' time.

zj glad the baby's growing well!

bisou am loving the washing basket idea! We did get a moses basket but picked it up second hand & bought a new mattress. I wish I'd had your idea first though!

katie I'm sorry you're not getting any sleep, I hope it gets better soon

reban glad you're feeling better

veggie that sounds interesting re how your ds2's name is chosen. Do you know how long it takes for them to pick it?

ladyt I seem to remember you asking for advice about bottles & washing liquid? Fwiw, I just wash the bottles in very hot water & sterilise them. I found that with ds1, he was always sick when I'd wash them with washing up liquid but never when washed in plain water.

kmp 7 people staying . I didn't even want my parents staying for one night!

emmanbump poor you with the uti. Hope the abs clear it up quickly!

trace have you been taking arnica at all? I've found it really has helped with sore bits.

Sorry if I've missed anyone out! Am off to bed now to try & get my sleep in!

Turniphead1 · 17/12/2008 20:40

Wow - Notquiteso that's amazing! I am so in awe of you. A great birth story up til the third stage [grrr at them not thinking to give you something. Funnily enough we did hear some strange noises as far up as N4 .

Glad Mars was good for you. Is she coming to you postnatally. My friend in N5 is hoping to have her in July! Also love the names. So meaningful, but cool and funky too!

Veggie oooh that is exciting to know. We will see. DH is out at his Christmas do, so the law of sd says it could be tonight (Turnip becomes dismayed at thought of boozy/curry smelling birth partner!). On the up side I do know that the "best" room at the birth unit is free (M/W told me tonight to ask for it when I call in - Kimberley it's no. 42 fyi!). Now just need to make a coffee date with Effie* to complete the job! Hope your hurty boobs improve and that your DS is feeling better and makes it to nursery for friday.

Trace jeez don't beat yourself up about the dummy. I think they have their place - esp when you get into the puking/constant feeding cycle. Really hope tonight is much better for you. Enjoy DD's nativity!

ps; am such a pgbrain only just noticing Kayz and Notsobigs post-birth name changes...

Oli really hoping your DS is much better soon. LOL at the "Calpol" buzz - a friend's DH calls it "riding the pink train" !?

kayzr · 17/12/2008 21:27

I need some reassurance and maybe a slap.

I am seriously considering FF as my breasts are so painful and the left one is boiling hot. Also when I feed him I tend to feel sick. I don't know if that means anything.
The pain is unbelievable and I feel like I am living on paracetamol.

Can anyone help me?

mibbes · 17/12/2008 21:51

Congrats CatDean and Jam trace sorry but LOL at fandangle !

aahh GBB what a lovely story - well done you getting 2 good sized babies out !!

Jam what an amazing story, well done missus !!

Think we may have a growth spurt here as DS fed on and off all afternoon between midday and 6pm , I am just grateful it was during the day - have fingers crossed he has had enough not to need many feeds tonight

Katie and Kayz glad to hear last night was better. trace I hope it is your turn for a good night's sleep tonight, hopefully the dummy will help

hiccymapops · 17/12/2008 21:53

Hello everyone

I've had no internet again since last week! Felt like i'd lost a leg! It's going to take me forever to catch up!

Congratulations to all you lovely ladies that have had their little ones (sorry i haven't read through yet, my dh has just got us back online about 10 minutes ago)

My friend said she'd told you i had Luke last Thursday morning. He weighed 8lb 9oz, and is absolutely gorgeous (i'm not biased at all ) Everything went really well, all that faffing about getting a lovely pool sorted, and i couldn't even be bothered with it

Little monster's waking up now, so i'm off to get him from his dad, and will read everyone's news soon.

Hope everyone's doing really well, i've really missed reading this xxx

dreamydowler · 17/12/2008 22:07

Hope you dont mind my hijacking your thread but have breastfed 7 children and am having my 8th in June next year. It sounds like you could have a blocked duct kayz try massaging your breast with firm stroking motion from top to nipple and dont forget underneath as that is often where gets blocked. I find hand expressing off some of the foremilk before a feed ensures baby gets to the hind milk making them more satisfied and ensuring you empty your breast so is less likely to get blocked. warm water in the shower helps and silly as it sounds green cabbage leaves in your bra also sooth. Dont let things get out of hand though you may need antibiotics if mastitis has set in.

As for combined feeding if you are fortunate enough to get your baby to suck from a teat then go for it with either expressed or formula it doesnt do any harm and you can ensure your milk supply keeps going by expressing at that feed in fact often you can express much more than baby would have had stimmulating your breasts to make more at the next feed.

I just wanted to congratulate all you ladies who have given birth and welcome all our december babies and good luck to those who are still waiting

Turniphead1 · 17/12/2008 22:22

What a lovely post dreamy and you have my full and ultimate respect for carrying 8 babes. You must love it. As someone wondering how her pelvic floor can hold in this third baby, I can't even imagine what state I would be in after 8! Well done. When are you due?

That sounds like good advice for Kayz. I send you hugs and hope it eases.

Can I just share my latest (TMI) piles horror - they are bleeding so badly it looks like I have had a period. I got a real shock when I went to the loo as it fresh blood and not show type blood. Then realised it was back bottom. Yuk!

EffiePerine · 17/12/2008 22:28

Kayz: I remember having this a few times, esp in the early weeks, and it seemed to be the beginning of mastitis but not the real thing IYSWIM. What worked for me was massaging the breast(s) with a hot flannel (pref in the bath), rest and paracetemol. I found that if I rested and let DH do as much as poss for a day or so the fluey feeling passed and I was OK again.

kayzr · 17/12/2008 22:30

Dreamy Thank you ever so much. I really appreciate the help. I will be getting a cabbage tomorrow, loads of people have suggested it to me.
Congratulations on number 8!!!

EffiePerine · 17/12/2008 22:37

Kayz: cabbage is good, don't be spooked if your boobs appear to cook the stuff! They can get v hot when engorged. Good news is your milk has well and truly come in!

jumpjockey · 17/12/2008 23:12

Evening all - just to say huge congrats to Cat, Jam and GBB on your new arrivals - GBB that's absolutely amazing work, two babies both the size of my one

Have had a much better day today, dd has been sleeping for 3 hours at a stretch and feeding for much longer so hopefuly she'll sleep better tonight. Though I may be checking back in to say hello

dreamy thanks for your advice, the voice of a real expert by the sound of it I'll be trying expressing a bit to start the feed off tonight, I do worry sometimes if she's getting the good stuff or falling asleep too soon.

Had a great boob moment this evening - dd was screaming a bit as I was getting myself sorted to feed her and as DH brought her across the room my nip squirted a spray about 6 inches towards her!

VersOComeAllYeFaithful · 18/12/2008 07:38

Someone (I am sorry I don't remember who) asked me how much weight I'd put on this time round, as they are a size 18 too? I just remembered and thought I should post! With DD1 I gained 17kg and went from a 16 pre-pregnancy, to an 18, and then over six months back down to a 14-16 (without a 'diet' as such). This time round, I started off the weight I was when I gave birth to her (ADs didn't agree with me) but only gained 5kg. (No dieting or anything.) I've now lost 10kg. Ideally I'd get back to the weight I was when I got pg with DD1, but that's still some way (weigh - ho ho!) off and I will take my time and see if it comes off naturally once I'm a bit more active again.

Better (?) night last night - 10pm, 2am (snack feed so didn't settle and I knew she wouldn't so I couldn't), 3am, 4am, 5:30am and now stirring a bit. At least I got some sleep in between whiles.

Didn't tell you lot that the GP was crap yesterday. I haven't seen her before and she's really scary (!). (I manage a multimillion pound budget in my day job but this woman is fierce.) Anyway - she demanded to know why I thought I had breast thrush as it's "a new idea - and unproven - and only come about in the past two years" (which isn't true as I had it with DD1 who is three). She was very cold, and said "well, breastfeeding just hurts. That's the way it is!"

I stood my ground though - I'd only had three hours of broken sleep yesterday so NO ONE WAS MESSING WITH ME. Turns out she didn't quite give me what the BfN recommends but my doula helped me sort out the rest as she has had LOTS of experience of it. I am eternally grateful to her for her words of wisdom on the subject!

Am hoping the medicine kicks in soon as have been very 'uncomfortable' (to use a doctor's euphemism for being in excruciating pain). Ironic that the nipple scabs etc healed up well and haven't come back now the latch is sorted but now I'm itchy and have burning up to my armpits during and after feeds (NICE).

So remember, girls, "breastfeeding hurts".

My. Arse.
