well done you all on such wonderful birth stories - i can't tell you how wonderful and also useful it is to hear them - really gives me a sense of how anything can happen and how anything you get taught in an antenatal class can't convey the entirety of the experience.

i've got a 38 week mw appt next week and have started worrying about group b strep. it'll be too late then, won't it?

also, if you're bf, do you still need newborn bibs? i get so confused.

ladyt, jj, lal (and anyone else i've forgotten) - thanks for the stories

SummerLightning · 02/12/2008 19:27

hi everyone,
Cannot believe we have done 200 posts in about a day!!
Been at work today, last day tomorrow hooray! Cannot wait to be off, I think the whole thing will only just start to seem real once I finish work for good and don't keep thinking about it.
LadyT thanks for your birth story. I am a little worried that I won't feel any overwhelming emotion at first, just because that is the sort of person I am!! So it is good to know it happens and then you can feel it later! DH has said "don't worry about it, you will love him eventually even if you don't at first". So I hope he is right.
jj congrats, and what a great birth story. Where do I order one like that please? (Not that I am not saying it wasn't hard work and painful mind you!)

And lal too, I love reading these long stories so thanks!!! It is good to know you can end up on the drip and not have epidural/loads of intervention, etc. Congratulations!

verso that is sooo cute of your DD1. Haha, you have just reminded me of outnumbered though, where the little girl is always acting out things like XFactor and Ramsays kitchen nightmares with her cuddly toys. Sooo funny, does anyone else watch that?? (sorry diversion there)
Oh and I hope DD2 is out soon.

You all have me a bit worried about BFing now. I am hoping I manage to do it. I like the "simple" advice of wait until they scream and then just shove 'em in!! My friend does that with normal mealtimes with her 7 month year old DD (ie shove the food in while she's crying) and it does make me laugh!!

kayz, lots of sympathy, you do sound miserable. Try and ignore all the texts, etc. I don't seem to have hit the "have you had it yet" stage, even though I am only due a few days after you!! Not looking forward to that, think I will have to ignore them all. my work mates do say, "oh you're still pregnant then" when I turn up in the morning mind you. Like, hahahaha, you're soooooo funny. My mum hasn't started sounding scared when I phone yet either, but apparently MIL has (when DH phones). Anyway I hope you either feel a bit more cheerful about being pg soon, or have the baby!!

Good luck for tomorrow katie

Oh and congratulations to chutney and thanks for forwarding on pics, messages.

I am sure I have forgotten someone, but sorry, can't keep up!!

oh and jj i think DH is scared now you had your baby the day I was meant to meet you, a little early and so fast. Hopefully it will have given him a kick up the arse to keep his sodding phone turned on from now on, as sometimes he doesn't.

traceface · 02/12/2008 19:36

re people pestering for news... I got a new mobile at the weekend and sent a message to everyone saying "this is my new number" and you wouldn't believe how many replies I got from people who assumed my text was a baby announcement! My fault for getting all their hopes up!

Veggiemummy · 02/12/2008 19:47

Lal, welcome to your new baby girl and well done what a surprise to come out like that, i have heard some bad stories about pain with inductions, and i know you had some pain but the speed sounded great.

Trace-now i feel like maltesers. I had just seen an ad for them and then read your post. DH is going to the gym soon and has been ordered to bring some back.

Veggiemummy · 02/12/2008 19:52

oh and Lal i would interested to see what your DD's diet is like in a year or so. For DS' pregnancy i ate all good organic veggies loads of organic fruit and loads of good non meat protein, oh and all the good oils. i was the epitome of the model mummy diet. DS now loves nice fried foods, fish fingers, sausages, chips and basically anything that doesn't have vegetables or fruit in it and preferably white in colour. So my theory is the worse you diet the better theirs will be when they come out.

kayzisexpecting · 02/12/2008 19:53

I want some fruit pastilles. Dh bought a bag for us to share and he ate them all.

I am now turning off the football!!!!!!!!!

Verso · 02/12/2008 19:54

Btw, on the subject of breastfeeding websites, I've found this one quite useful in the past (if a bit right on about 'attachment parenting' which is a bit extreme for me!

kmp1 · 02/12/2008 20:11

wierd - 2 questions asked on here today were 2 questions I had - and my mum asked me too! Yeah apparently they break the waters during the C-Sect and newborns needing bibs if BF- I was wondering that too but got some anyway! Thanks for all the stories - I will not let you down and report back about mine I promise! Summer I'm addicted to XFactor and so happy to be out in time to catch the final with a glass of wine after my section! (sad huh) Very cute babies - thanks for all the photos coming through!!

JamInMyWellies · 02/12/2008 20:12

Kayz you know earlier you were querying puppies, the way ours is behaving tonight you can have him for free. He is totally bonkers.

What lovely birth stories.

I found kellymom a great site when I was feeding DS.

Turniphead1 · 02/12/2008 20:13

Here's a top tip on bibs - DON'T buy the ones with velcro fasteners (they totally wreck the rest of your washing). Buy the ones with either ties or poppers.

I don't bother putting them on newborns I don't think.

kmp1 · 02/12/2008 20:15

good luck tomorrow katie

majormoo · 02/12/2008 20:19

thanks for sharing the birth stories Lady T, Lal and JJ.

JJ water birth sounds lovely and Lal how fab to not have any stitches.

Kayz I hope you get to the hospital you want]

Effie just tried emailing the group email thing to get added to the list so hope it gets through

kayzisexpecting · 02/12/2008 20:19

Thanks Jam We've been looking at a Cocker Spaniel that needs rehoming. We'll probably get a puppy in about 10 years when we finally agree on a breed.

I bothered with bibs for all of 2 weeks I think, same with shoes. I was all for everything. He was my PFB for about a month and then I realised that a muslin square next to me would clean up milk just as easy, he didn't need little shoes and that I could watch tv when he was asleep.

I spent the first 2 weeks only letting the tv be on if it was muted and had subtitles.

majormoo · 02/12/2008 20:22

by the way Verso-think it was you who mentioned the difference between feeding a one year old and a new born. I ended up with mastitus with DS (luckily managed to feed through it without needing antibiotics or anything) and the midwife said I had the poisitioning wrong- I remembered feeding an older baby and wasn't pulling DS close enough into me when feeding him.

EffiePerine · 02/12/2008 20:23

JJ and Lal, thank you for your wonderfully detailed birth stories, I love reading them . Sounds like you both had calm births in their way - am hoping for one of those as well! I will be taking notes through Dec so plenty of details from the rest of you please

Veggiemummy · 02/12/2008 20:33

Kayz i don't need this stress, and DH is making it worse as he is making all those annoyed air sucking through teeth noises. he isn't going to gym now but will still pop out at half time for my provisions.

i didnt use bibs at all until DS was on solids. but DS didn't spew much or possit.

kayzisexpecting · 02/12/2008 20:48

I know Veggie Do they not realise how heavily pregnant we are? We do not need the stress of losing.

Veggiemummy · 02/12/2008 21:00

i have just eaten an entire pack of Maltesers, but was only 80g, DH was lured by the christmas pack.

kayzisexpecting · 02/12/2008 21:02

I just can't believe it.

kayzisexpecting · 02/12/2008 21:07

I am going to put a bet on Burnley winning the cup.

theyoungvisiter · 02/12/2008 21:17

Congratulations jj and lal! Brilliant birth stories from everyone as well, makes mine look a bit perfunctory... If I ever get the energy I will do the blow by blow account .

theyoungvisiter · 02/12/2008 21:19

Sorry, pressed send too soon, meant to add, it's so fascinating hearing all the different experiences - I sometimes think MN should publish a book of 100 different birth stories. It would tell new parents as much as a hundred years of NCT classes.

Veggiemummy · 02/12/2008 21:38

oh well it's just the worthless.

i am feeling really tetchy tonight which is making me nervous as i have heard this can be hormones playing up just before labour starts i don't remember it last time but hoping it is nothing. Have taken a few remedies to try to settle me down, just have a real nervous jumpy feeling. maybe it's the sugar from all the maltesers.

we have just inflated the birthpool it's fits beautifully in our loungeroom.

zoejeanne · 02/12/2008 21:43

Oh my god, how much has this thread moved in 24 hours?! Ok, will try to catch up ? hope everyone is well today?

Congratulations to JJ, and great to hear from chutney and see the picture of her handsome young man

LadyT/JJ/lal ? thanks for your birth stories ? all so different and so interesting to read (from the point of view of someone who is yet to go there), thank you all for sharing them. And ladyt - I was really interested to hear your MW theory of 4 hours playtime/sleeping at day/nighttime ? will try to remember that one.

And mibbes might have a baby by now, if the contractions carried on. Hope it went well mibbes! Jam ? our tree is outside for a bit too, never heard the full fat coke theory, I was just going to give it water, but do trees like coke more?

Turnip ? sorry to hear you are GBS +ve, but it?s good you should still be able to have the baby at the birth unit.

Verso ? sorry to hear your little girl needed to go back into hospital, but it sounds like she?s responding quickly to the treatment, which is great.

Trace ? to share this, but I?m trumpy and burpy at the moment (and loud trumps too, no silent ones for me at the mo!)

Kayz ? isn?t the unit at Malton closed between 5pm and 9am anyway? At my booking in appointment I had to sign a form saying I understood that the local MLU (in my case Brid) is only open between 9 and 5, and if you went into labour outside those hours you have to call Scarborough and probably go there anyway? Something about some women almost giving birth on the doorstep at 3am cause the doors were locked and no MWs were there (although I think this was exaggerated to make their point). I hope this hasn?t scared you (sorry, it probably has) and I also hope I?m wrong ? it was 24 weeks ago when I booked in, so could easily have mis-remembered it.

Is it just me, but whenever friends of mine approach/pass their EDD I?m too scared to get in touch in case they?re in the middle of a big contraction or something, but then worry they think I don?t care if I don?t get in touch. Think I will turn my phone off as my EDD approaches to avoid all the silly questions, they will drive me bonkers

Last night we went on a hospital tour, which suddenly made it all seem very real! But useful to know where the labour ward is (signs absolutely hopeless and we were wandering around for ages, so glad I don?t have to do that with contractions!) Afterwards we got fish and chips and ate them in the car, overlooking Scarborough beach - in the dark , but we could hear the waves! And I agree with you trace ? it was a good opportunity to have a good chat with DH about lots of stuff to come our way.

And we had a sprinkling of snow this morning too, not much but enough to freeze this afternoon when the temperature dropped - which made me very nervous on the road, so I didn?t go to aquanatal tonight. I?m hoping it melts soon. Hatty ? a workmate of mine?s husband is a dr at Northallerton hospital, I don?t know he's what a dr of, but she?s lovely so I?m sure all the other staff there are too!

I had a good day today with a friend and her 2 yr old son and 3 mth old daughter, and she gave me some good advice on my worrying about whether I?ll be a good Mum ? so I thought I?d share. She told me that however much you prepare and get things ready, you are not ready to be a Mum until baby is born ? and then all of a sudden you?re more ready than you thought possible and doing a much better job than you realise. This really made me feel good and better about what is to come.

Have a good evening all, and lots of luck for tomorrow katie xx

kayzisexpecting · 02/12/2008 21:45

I bloody hope Burnley go on and win the cup now. They deserve it.

Not wanting to worry you Veggie, but I felt like that the day before I had DS. Really nervous, was a bit moody and just a bit scared.

Could it be putting the pool up and realising it means it will be happening soon?
