Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Off work today with a hot little dd. Right now she is being very bossy and not too unwell.

RE Calpol and Medised they are identical in their active ingredients, and can't be used for children under 2 years of age.

Well I did my first vomit this morning. No idea why, I'm nearly 15 weeks.

frazzledoldbag34 · 18/11/2008 13:11

jennster - I've just had a look at my Calpol Night bottle and it says 'not suitable for under 3 months' - same as normal Calpol. But gives dosages for 3mth-1yr etc etc. I've been giving it to DD2 since about 18 months or so. Can't comment on Medised though - have never used it.
Hope your DD feels better soon.

alapala · 18/11/2008 13:19

Well I've booked my in-depth scan for tomorrow evening, so we'll see what it come up with. Will probably be inconclusive, and leave me to decide on amnio. I wish we were back in London at times like this, where I know how it all works and I can have sensible conversations in my own language.. Might fly back for some appointments anyway. Thank you emalinaC for your story - it sounds like you did the right thing and what a relief to know.

Momino · 18/11/2008 13:24

hi all.
i've used Mediced for our two since over three months of age for teething, etc. i'm sure the box says over three months.

daizydoo · 18/11/2008 14:25

Hi all,

We've had a grotty week as DS has picked up a cold from nursery, which he has kindly passed on to DH and I and he now keeps us awake at night coughing - so am rather tired, but what's new there!!

Glad to hear that someone else has gone off pasta and rice. DH is getting fed up of potato and chips every night

I believe that the rules have changed for Medised and its now not given for children under the age of 2. If you search recent threads, you'll come across a couple. They tend to get quite fraught!

I better go and do some housework while DS is asleep, as it never seems to get done!!

MsG · 18/11/2008 14:28

Alapala, good luck with the scan tomorrow - let us know how it goes.

frazzledoldbag34, my wallpaper's called Lockwood. It's this one - www.lauraashley.com/Duck-Egg+Blues/LOCKWOOD-WALLPAPER/invt/3373538&bklist=

It was a nightmare to put up, though - my hubby did it and was tearing his hair out as the overlap bit is really tiny!

FiKelly · 18/11/2008 14:31

LoobyLou36 you've still plenty of time. I had DS at 36yrs and now expecting #2 at 38yrs. This one is due the day before my 39th birthday!

On the medised subject... grabbed the box and it says...

under 3 months: on doctors advice only
3 months to under 1 year: half to one 5ml spoonful 3-4 times daily
1yr to under 6yrs: one to two 5ml spoonfuls 3-4 times daily
6yrs to under 12yrs: two to four 5ml spoonfuls 3 times daily.

Allow at least 4hrs between doses or as directed by doctor. No more than 4 doses should be taken in any 24 hr period.

It also says... May cause drowsiness. If affected, do not drive or operate machinery and avoid alcoholic drink!!!!!!!!!!!!

FiKelly · 18/11/2008 14:56

My figleaves order came today... just tried it on and unfortunately this sexy black number has to go back. Hot milk have a designed this with a non stretchy lace fabric over the cups. It's very pretty and fits the rest of my body perfectly. But as the cups aren't stretchy at all there's just not enough room for the j cup... infact when I bend over to pick something up my boobs just fall straight out lol! oh well it was a nice idea... Just glad their pj's are a good fit.

frazzledoldbag34 · 18/11/2008 14:58

Has anyone else heard about the Calpol and childhood asthma thing? My SIL was telling me - apparently since everyone started giving Calpol for every cold, temperature, night of teething etc the incidence of childhood asthma has increased hugely. Hmmmmm.
(Must admit to being guilty of Calpol use - but I wouldn't say I use it overly-much, just when they are distraught, in pain, teething, full of cold etc.) which thankfully isn't that often. But I don't think twice about using it when I think they need it, perhaps I should? Or perhaps this is rubbish? Anyone know more????

Due1stMay09 · 18/11/2008 15:01

Back from work - phew!
Cant believe how many people are due 1st May, its so exciting! The first 3 months went so slowly for me (i found out at 4 weeks) but now we've had our 12 week scan its flown by and i cant believe im 17 weeks all ready - cant wait til 20 week scan now on 16th Dec although i will be 21 weeks by then.
Is anyone going to find out the sex at their scan? We want to wait and see when its born but im sure we will be tempted to find out!
Also - is anyone else craving salt and vinegar crisps? A lot of people ive spoken to have which is strange, im absolutely obsessed with them, especially salt and vinegar discos! Mmmm!
Ive had 2 really strange cravings - the taste of the seal bit on envelopes...yep, i swear! And tomato soup and rice together which i dont think is that strange but everyone else does!

frazzledoldbag34 · 18/11/2008 15:03

MsG the Lockwood paper is pretty. Will prob wait until we know the sex though so can do blue paper for boy or cream or pink or something if its a girl.
Can't concentrate on work - am so rubbish today.
I have a huge list of things to do and only 1/2 hr left.
Bum.
Fi - sorry to hear about your nightie - I was thinking of getting something from hot milk too. Was considering the cami top for feeding - in black lace although wonder if it might have the same prob? Although currently am only a D cup (last preg was a FF!!!)
Right am going now. x x

FiKelly · 18/11/2008 15:04

frazzle i've not heard about that. We use calpol when it's really needed too. Luckily DS has been well most of the time and we've not used it v.much. but when his last 4 molars came through just after his 2nd birthday nothing helped the pain except calpol. They must have been excruciating for him. I had to give him some dentinox teething gel to numb it a bit while we waited for the calpol to take effect... or he'd be screaming in pain until the pain subsided. Poor mite. At least he now has all his teeth... until they come out and we do this all over again!

FiKelly · 18/11/2008 15:09

Due1stMay09 we'll find out if lo is amenable on the day but we did last time too... and kept it secret until DS arrived. This time I expect our knowing and not telling will drive everyone nuts as they'll know for sure this time that we know!

frazzle you might be ok as there's about 4 inches between a ff and j and that might make all the difference... shame really as it was really delicious to wear!

pulapula · 18/11/2008 15:29

Re. the Medised 2 year thing - I have heard that some pharmacists won't sell this for use by children under 2 years old. A friend told me it was due to a fatality (or maybe more than one?) in a small baby where the baby was also on other medication but I guess they are trying to be safe. Guess a google search might shed light on this.

I have never used Medised on mine (i think it was the "sed" as in "sedative" that put me off), but have used calpol and calpol cold which work well and I guess have the same sleep-inducing effect as they do mean a few hours solid sleep out of them even when they are poorly with coughs, temperatures, ear infections etc.

daizydoo · 18/11/2008 15:39

Found it medised thread

Jennster · 18/11/2008 16:05

I am a pharmacist and you can't buy it for under 2 year olds. The manufacturers still haven't got their arses in gear and changed the box and of course if you have one in the cupboard then it will have doses for under 2s on it.

Jennster · 18/11/2008 16:14

And it's because there are so many things available with the same ingredients in with different names, that it's been done. Eg Calpol Night and Medised being identical. I once had a customer who had been giving Medised and Piriton. Different ingredients, but 2 different antihistamines. No wonder her son was sound asleep on the sofa. He was fine, but she had no idea she had double dosed.

FiKelly · 18/11/2008 16:28

thanks jennster good to know. I didn't get round to getting medised until just recently... as DS (was 2 in aug) was grotty with the cold and I thought it would be handy if he was having a bad night. As it turned out he slept great and I've still never opened the bottle! Will remember for anyone else that asks though

MsG · 18/11/2008 17:01

Due1stMay09, I've gone potty for salt and vinegar Walkers! I've always liked them but haven't bought any for quite a while, and now I'm buying multipacks!!

llareggub · 18/11/2008 17:03

I've just had a call from my midwife with the results of my GTT. She says I have a borderline case of gestational diabetes, which isn't a particular surprise since I have PCOS. I have an appointment with a specialist diabetes nurse on Friday.

I'm pretty gutted by this, although I guess in the long run it is a good warning sign as 50% of women who get it end up with type 2 diabetes. I suppose I have time to address the long-term causes.

I'm also pretty sure I'll end up with a c-section now....

Anyone with any experience of gestational diabetes?

Momino · 18/11/2008 17:34

scary about the medised labelling. i never thought twice about giving it to mine even below 1 year, especially when i knew it would help them sleep.

luckily, they've survived (but then I'm careful not to give them more than one type of medicine at once). i will reconsider the alternatives now.

Momino · 18/11/2008 17:38

llareggub,
i got tested for diabetes last time as parents had it but mine came out normal.

i do feel for you but glad they've caught it. do you have to watch what you eat now?

llareggub · 18/11/2008 17:46

Yes, I expect so from quick google search. Low GI diet seems to be key, together with 30 minutes moderate exercise per day, which will be more challenging! We've just rejoined the gym so will be able to swim every other day or so, but will struggle to exercise on my work days.

Reggiee · 18/11/2008 19:08

Llare - I'm booked in for a diabetes test due to family history but not until the end of Jan. I can't eat anything before the appointment and have to hang around the hospital for 2 hours. My friend had it but controlled it well through diet and had a natural birth.

My sickness has been much better in the last 3 weeks but am struggling now with tiredness. Yawn...

JosieC · 18/11/2008 19:13

My sister and I were virtually reared on Calpol - I still remember the delicious taste of the pink one - was very disappointed when I had to go onto the orange one when I got older..... and it didn't do us any harm!
And I'm with you Due1stMay09 and MsG I'm obsessed with salt + vingar hula hoops mmmmmmmm
