Alapala the same thing happened to me just a few weeks ago. Our NHS 12 week scan came back with a risk of 1:169. The sonographer told us she was terribly sorry and suggested we book CVS immediately. It was horrible.

We decided to go for a private scan, which is much more detailed - they can check presence of nasal bone, heart chambers etc which are also indicators. These seemed fine, but my blood test results came back with a risk of 1:19.

After much agonising we decided to go ahead with CVS. NOT because we would have terminated the pregnancy if it came back negative but simply because we couldn't face 6 months of worry and wanted to be prepared.

We did a lot of research and discussed it in detail with an NHS consultant and learned that the risk associated with invasive testing is largely to do with the skill of the practitioner. We decided to go to Professor Nikolaides at the Fetal Medicine Centre.

We had the test which wasn't fun but was quick and relatively painless and, thank god, the results came back negative.

That was three weeks ago and I'm so glad we did it. In the same situation, I would do it again. Incidentally on 1st November the NHS in the UK changed the marker for 'high' risk from 1:300 to 1:150 - so if we had our scan now we would be sent away and told not to worry.

I know it's a sensitive issue and people have very strong opinions for and against testing but you must do what is right for you and if you decide not to have any further tests remember it's just a statistic - actually the odds are very much in your favour.

I really feel for you. Hope our story helps.

SpangleMaker · 17/11/2008 18:37

alapala hope you're ok. I agree with pulapula, the nuchal measurement sounds very promising (mine was 1.1mm at 11+3, so 0.6mm is very low). I hope the detailed scan gives you some reassurance.

Jael I'm booked in at North Staffs, how about you?

detsy if you don't mind I can give a happy home to your top thank you! What shall I do, I could email you my address, or are you in Congleton sometime?

FiKelly · 17/11/2008 18:58

mumof3bs1more hello & welcome

alapala my best friend locally that is also pregnant but due in march didn't get a nuchal... just the normal bloods at 16wks. This came back with a high risk of under 1:150 can't remember the exact figure. She decided to go for an amnio and her results from that were clear. It was a worrying time for them though & she wished she'd done a nuchal scan. I'm 38yrs, our measurement was 1.4 and risk score was about 1:3366 I think... so your measurement is heaps better than mine. It's a hard decision whether to have more tests... The consultant said unless we were at the 1:150 risk he wouldn't be recommending a CSV etc and it would be up to us.

sending some big hugs to you xx

FiKelly · 17/11/2008 19:01

LoobyLou36 I think you could do yellow/white for a girl or boy... It will be lovely.

frazzle I've been mad on egg mayo sandwiches too. In fact my mum was mad on them when she carried me so maybe there is something leaning towards girls there? Love the duck egg blue colour scheme too.

llareggub · 17/11/2008 19:22

Loobylou, just make sure you have a black-out lining or blind to go with the curtains. DS used grobags in his cot until he turned 1, when he went into a big bed with a single bed duvet. So it might be worth thinking about whether you need bedding and curtains or just curtains. Depends on what sort of cot you go for, I guess.

Febes · 17/11/2008 19:49

I heard LOs heartbeat today!!!! I ahd my 16 week check up and it was all standard the mdwife told me to give up BFing again grrrr I said why I'm only feeding once a day and she said That when the new baby came if I was feeding a toodler the new baby might not thrive and then I would have trouble weaning her. I have faith that my one feed a day will not disturb my supply!!! Maybe DD will self wean by then but I don't se any rush to stop her when she's only having it once a day. She not even a year year!!

llareggub · 17/11/2008 19:57

Febes, what bollocks from the midwife! It really makes me angry that they are so badly educated on breastfeeding. Have you been over to the pregnant and nursing thread? Having a toddler around is great for sorting out supply, the more you feed the better supply gets! But I guess you knew that anyway, just ranting, sorry.

pulapula · 17/11/2008 19:59

Frazzled - Duck egg blue is my favourite colour so sounds lovely to me. Wi

I have also been craving eggs a lot, but think i did in last 2 pg (girl and boy) so not sure if it means anything. With DD I also craved pizza and cake hence my 4st weight gain. With DS I had a lot of beetroot and tuna (actually been having a lot of tuna this time too- lets see if its another boy).

I might start a names thread on this, but thought I'd share my chat with my mum yesterday. She was desperate to know our name favourites, and I didn't want to share yet, as I sort of knew what she might say. Anyway, I gave in, and said it was "Charlie" for a boy. She said "as in proper Charlie" (think it means fool/idiot) and I said "yes, but noone says that anymore" and she said "i still do" so I said "well you'd have to stop". Then more mumblings about not liking it, but "Charles" was good (I don't like Charles) and then "we'd better hope its a girl then!". Mums eh?!

A mum I know here has a little boy Charlie and I think its very cute and then theres "Charlie and Lola". My DH and DD like it too, so she might have to get used to it!

pulapula · 17/11/2008 20:47

I seem to have killed off the thread or has everyone gone for an early night?

Jennster · 17/11/2008 21:05

Ha ha Pula. We won't tell people our names. People can't help but give an opinion. When you haven't actually named the child then you could be persuaded to change. When it's done, it's done and people would have to be bloody rude to say anything negative about it.

Still bf here too Febes. Bollards to your midwife. As it happens I want to give up, but am waiting for ds to have his last innoculation. He is in no hurry to stop. I bf to 5months pg last time.

FiKelly · 17/11/2008 21:10

I'm on line too... just listing more of our DVD clear out on ebay. It takes ages to upload the pictures. I've got about another 30 or so still to do arrrrrh.

Momino · 17/11/2008 21:20

evening all.
trying to do our sainsbury's online shop and have no clue what to buy for this week's meals. i can't plan ahead for food.

what did you all eat tonight? may give me some ideas.

FiKelly · 17/11/2008 21:37

momino we had the rest of the chicken, lentil, onion, carrot & potato v.thick soup I made yesterday... have no idea what to make for tomorrow. Sorta been off pasta and rice. Gone a bit potato mad last 14 wks!

frazzledoldbag34 · 17/11/2008 21:40

I'm not telling you what I ate tonight as it's really unhealthy - and all that was left in the fridge as I too have no inclination towards food shopping at the moment. I bought a chicken to roast then make soup out of left-overs the other day but had to put it in the freezer as I couldn't face the smell! (and normally a roasting chicken is one of my favorite smells). Anyway got it out to defrost today but it was still frozen by this afternoon so couldn't cook it (hence the leftover bits from the fridge tea). Will have that tomorrow with lots of lovely veg for dinner then make wholesome soup to make up for the rubbish i've had tonight! My kids love roast chicken and mash with peas and carrrots too.
Am so glad my Duck Egg is meeting with approval - I do love it. It's the Laura Ashley paint that I use - it comes out beautifully. We had it in our bedroom in our last house and everyone admired it. Now I have about 3 friends plus my step-mother who have used the same colour! Although it will look fine with pink/cream accessories I am bizarrely finding myself hoping for a boy.....not that I'd let on to anyone in RL of course. Not sure where this boy thing has come from......have always been very 'pink' orientated before!
Names wise haven't a clue except I like Annabel for a girl. Nairn or Rory for a boy at the moment (but DD2 age 2 has started calling herself Rory lately so that might get confusing! - her real name is nothing like Rory by the way!) She also had a tantrum this morning because she wanted the football on - eh? She is a very strange child!!
We were in the car on the way to school at the time!

frazzledoldbag34 · 17/11/2008 21:51

pula - I love the name Charlie. DH doesn't thought
fiKelly - I would normally never choose to eat egg mayo - it's so weird and when I was pg with DD2 I had to have two boiled eggs before I went to work (or else I got in a right strop and felt rubbish all morning). Haven't had a boiled egg since - well, until this pg that is!
And in all 3 of my pg's I've been obsessed by breakfast cereal = so weird, as again it's something I NEVER eat when not pg. Crunchy nut cornflakes are currently a twice daily occurrence!
Re: Nuchals - sorry I can't help as I haven't officially had one (but had the consultant check it when he couldn't perform the cvs a few wks ago) - he didn't tell me what the measurement was tho, just said it was totally fine. Also said the nasal bone was present and normal.
I am booked for amnio in 2 wks time - wondering whether to go now or not.........feel quite reassured that the consultant has checked the baby and couldn't see anything odd, but haven't had any bloods done (not even booked in yet - almost 15 wks!) - I don't really like the 1 in however many chance of things but that 's just me being weird probably. I have a couple of abnormalities in my immediate family so am someone who just needs to hear a 'yes' or a 'no' when it comes to Downs etc likelihoods.
But I can't help feeling that the amnio might be unnecessary. Maybe I should request another detailed scan first - not sure if they would do it? And if I;d be satisfied with the outcome?
(Had amnio with DD1, couldn't with DD2 as constant bleeding so they refused to do it so had v detailed scan instead - and all was fine). What would the consensus view be on here? What would you do?

detsy · 17/11/2008 21:53

Hi girls

Unproductive day with poorly sprog - she's still really unwell and now stopped drinking her milk. Think its back to docs for us tomo...

Alapala - daft question I guess but are the stats worked out the same way in Spain as they are in UK? Again my friend had a 1:2 result from bloods and freaked out. They had the amnio and came back clear. Its a horrid thing and I'd be exactly like you if I was in your position - but, your nuchal measurement is really low which is good. Any chance of a blood retest?

Spangle great on the top - your call - we could meet for a coffee or I can send it to you. Congleton is 10 mins from me so its not a prob, I'm usually free Fri pm or at the weekend some time - just let me know!

Got a scrummy choc fondant for pudding which is languisihing in the fridge - also had a belgian choc eclair today and don't normally like cream cakes! And a ton of homemade spag bol, oh dear what a little fatty.

frazzledoldbag34 · 17/11/2008 21:53

Oh no - just realised it looks like I'm talking to myself again. Maybe I should be in bed?

frazzledoldbag34 · 17/11/2008 21:56

Crossed posts detsy!
So sorry to hear your DD is still not well. Hope you manage a decent night and she's much better in the morn.
Calpol is a wonderful thing - Calpol Night is even better ! It seems to give my little DD a good few hours rest through the night even if she's really not well. If you've not tried it I'd recommend some!

Momino · 17/11/2008 21:59

frazzled, i do love duck egg blue. when it'stime to paint our lounge, i want to do it duck egg.

about names, still scoping the websites for ideas. i like Henry for a boy but am trying not to use a name in the top 50 (dumb idea b/c there are nice ones!). would love atticus but don't think we're brave enough and I don't think britons would understand it as much as in america where it's slightly more acceptable. my friends really looked worried the last two pregnancies when i mentioned it and were generally relieved when we had girls.

for a girl, i love saffron but dd1 is India and I think that would just be tacky. also for a girl, we need a name that doesn't end in 'ia' as dd2 is Saskia so we need to stop the pattern. what does that leave us? I like Harper but again we'll get the eyes rolling, i'm sure.

baby will be nameless or remain Baby3 as we call it now. kinda cute.

Momino · 17/11/2008 22:01

i'd like some Calpol night right now...

frazzledoldbag34 · 17/11/2008 22:08

Momino - I like your girls names. Mine are Kitty and Flora (Flora is the one who calls herself Rory - I think she's gone from Flora, to Rora to Rory). Quite cute. Saskia is lovely, was on our list for DD1. Saffron is also pretty, but am not sure you could do it with India....or maybe you could, Saffy is sweet.
I (inexplicably) also like Harper......although don't think it would go down well with DH - although he does like Wallis, Mabel, Roy and other horrors (IMHO) - sometimes I wonder what planet he inhabits!

detsy · 17/11/2008 22:09

Frazzle if you want a yes or no then your only option is the amnio. My worse than useless comm MW last year told me when I got my 1 in 3000 Downs results - ah yes but someone has to be the one..... yeah great, thanks for that! But there will always be that fact I suppose.

they also said to me this time that having had a baby a year ago with no problems then there shouldn't be a problem this time. That may be the same for you even though your youngest is 2 (i think..??) but you would need to ask your consultant his/her opinion. I think your situation is different with your direct family being affected. Do you know what you would do with the results - I suppose that is a deciding factor as well. Anyway I'm rambling - good luck in reaching a decision soon.

I don't actually know how common DS is - I'll go and research now as I think we tend to think its pretty common but unsure if it really is?

Sorry - frazzle prob been no help whatsoever.

frazzledoldbag34 · 17/11/2008 22:11

I'm also wondering if I'm feeling the baby move, either that or it's wind but I think it may be a jumping bean! It definitely feels like there is something in there! Placenta at the front though.

EmmalinaC · 17/11/2008 22:13

Hello all

detsy sorry to hear DD is still poorly. It's rotten this time of year with so many bugs around.

I've been eating for Britain too - seem to have an incredibly sweet tooth and crave Haribo all day. Just polished off a Cornetto but am feeling slightly queasy after watching Bushtucker Trial on I'm a Celeb...

I'm with Jennster on the names - we're keeping ours secret. Everyone already knows we're having a girl and if I have an elective c-section they'll know the date. Have to keep some surprises!

detsy · 17/11/2008 22:16

My bedroom is duck egg blue and pale toffee - love it.

Calpol night - yes heard good things about this stuff but can't find it anywhere. I find the Medised does similar stuff and helps with her nose/breathing.

Like all those girls names and boys too - DP wants Alfie for a boy, I'm unsure. I had Daisy, Millie, Mollie on my girls list last time and ended up with Charlotte Grace (Lottie, Gracie Bean, Beana)
