oh, and on antenatal classes - i would highly recommend the NCT ones. I speak from experience because my job is to book/organise NCT courses in the North (so I'm not biased)! But book now because they fill up quickly.

also, they're not cheap, but I think they're well worth it. again, i'm not biased .

llareggub · 13/11/2008 15:48

I also recommend the NCT classes, not least because I met some great people there. We still meet up 2 years later, and are going through 2nd pregnancies together.

Emmalina I had a M&P Pliko - as soon as I could I donated it to charity. The basket was tiny; getting the carry cot on and off was impossible never mind with DS in it; the mechanism for folding and putting up was just awful - esp putting it down - I wrecked my shoulder using the 'petrol lawn mower' pull to collapse it; and once DS got a bit bigger the handles were terrible for trying to get on or off curbs. My mother also hated it! She never was able to fold it properly!!
So this time it'll be either Jane, iCandy, Bugaboo and I'll take a look also at Phil & Teds (never heard of them before!) As for boot space - not a problem as I drive a Ford Transit van!!!

Anyone know what the NCT classes in East Yorkshire are like?

Had my first midwife appointment today. She told me my doctor should have told me to make an appointment to see her weeks ago - cheers, doc!!

It was just taking my urine and blood, but she was really helpful and gave me lots of info about local shops and where to go.

Hi All,

Wow, so much to think about re pushchairs. We are on an extremely tiny budget so will be either getting second hand one or going for a cheapo model. I might investigate the slings tho, a friend used one and loved it.

Is it normal to feel a bit bruised after scan? I really felt uncomfortable when the sonographer was pushing the thingy around and now I feel really bruised on one side.

Am off to look at NCT classes now.

agooboo · 13/11/2008 17:24

DIvedaisy decided on the icecream in the end. Although it didn't quite live up to my expectations.

Was reading somewhere that the best/most proven way to tell babies sex is mother's intuition about what she thinks she will have. (I think it said 70% of the mothers asked in a survey were right) maybe we could all guess what we think we will have (before 20 week scan - so no cheating!!) and see how right we are when the bambinos arrive/ 20 week scan.

spangle - gald it was mint - i was hoping it would be!!

well, I think thought I was covering my rapidly expanding belly quite well until one of the kids at school asked me if I was pregnant! They have no tact at our school and say exactly what they think! I didn't think it was obvious tbh, maybe its the baggy jumpers giving it away.

Momino · 13/11/2008 17:24

we get paid by history of bookings so sort of commission but you need to book a class in west Yorks for me to get any benefits. i'm sure some of you don't want to travel that far for an antenatal course, hehe.

MsG - where in E Yorks are you? my colleague covers that area but we work closely together.

agooboo · 13/11/2008 17:52

momino I am in west yorkshire and was thinking of booking NCT classes but mostly for the social/meeting other mums. I have 2 DS already but I know very few mums and wish I had known mums with the other 2. esp with PND after DS2. do you think it is worth booking for social side?

agooboo · 13/11/2008 17:55

LoobyLou36 · 13/11/2008 18:08

Hi All
Just to let you know how I got on at the docs. Not much they can do about the headaches, she recommended rest, cold compresses etc.
Also said keep off sitting in front of the computer for long periods - bit difficult when that's my job.
My blood pressure was fine but I have protein in my urine so they're sending a sample to the lab.

All this talk of different buggies/pushchairs is v.confusing. First baby so have no idea about what we'll need.

LoobyLou36 · 13/11/2008 18:09

missyk would love to see pics. can you send to [email protected]

MissyK · 13/11/2008 18:33

loobyLou I have sent the e-mail, only sent a few but it gives you an idea.

FiKelly · 13/11/2008 19:02

Wow! away for one day and I've pages to catch up on... which i'm off to do now

runningmonkey it can be a bit uncomfortable when they push down on your tummy with the gadget... I found my oscar a bit nippy this time & it never felt sore with DS. The consultant did say that current LO placenta is on the back wall... so he probably had to 'delve' deeeper to see what he needed. I'm sure DS placenta was towards the front last time...

bekkaboo · 13/11/2008 19:10

bekkaboo, when was your first child born? We have children the same age and I wondered if yours was born in October 2006 as well?

divedaisy · 13/11/2008 19:21

I feel like I'm under attack on another thread - the problem with typing out your views is that it's difficult to articulate your exact meaning! So i'm feeling a bit bruised...
Anyway - you lot cheer me up OK!!

Thanks Fi I thought it was probably it, especially since I've got quite a bit of lard to see through too!

I've been thinking about Jools today - hope she is ok.

FiKelly · 13/11/2008 19:26

Hiya to MERMAIDKB

MissyK I had an unplanned emergency CS with DS and the CS op itself was easier than I expected... although personally I'm rubbish with anaesthesia and the spinal block made me really woozy and nauseous... so for many hours afterwards & a few other reasons I was not 'with it'. Apparently they said my being rubbish with anaesthetics is due to my not being able to hold my liquor either

The 1st 24hrs after the CS were the most painful tummy wise but the little pain killer tabs they give you do make a difference. No one explained to me what the strange ladder like contraption was that they'd fitted to the bottom of my bed... it took me a while to figure out it was to help me manoeuvre into a sitting position from lying down lol! you use the rungs one by one to haul yourself upright. You will remain sore for quite a few days but the more you move about the easier it gets... although you'll be hobbling around like an old woman! By day 4 I was cutting down my pain relief as I didn't feel I needed so much... and within a week I didn't need any at all.

The incision was very tiny... the tummy crease I'd avoided looking at from my squeemishness turned out to not be the incision at all but just my flabby deflated tummy! When I did spot the incision it was much neater & so small I thought how on earth did DS come out of it?

I got a minor infection in my incision requiring anti-biotics but that was about 14days after the op and they quickly sorted it out. These days you'd have to look hard to see the scar as it's so low down you wouldn't even see it if I was brave enough to wear a bikini...

On the whole a CS is not the totally easy option it may seem at first & def no walk in the park as recovery does take longer for us mums than a vaginal birth. You probably won't feel at ease with the wound for 4 - 6 weeks after.

But that all said If I have to have another CS this time that'll be ok. ooo sorry I rambled on a bit..

bekkaboo · 13/11/2008 19:29

LLaregubb, hi i shoul have updated he was 2 when i conceived he's 2.3 now, born in the august.

I have posted a new thread but can someone reasure or advise me that 20 weeks scan is on at 23w4?

FiKelly · 13/11/2008 19:35

Moonlit congrats on your scan

bekkaboo they're not doing my scan at 20wks either... christmas and new year getting in the way I suspect. Instead my date came through for when i'm 19wks! just before xmas...23rd dec.

can't remember who was asking if you usually see a doctor at the 20 wk scan... I didn't with DS last time but as I'm under consultant care due to my previous probs we are seeing the consultant at the 20 (or my 19) week scan this time.

pulapula · 13/11/2008 19:35

Hi all,

Back from nuchal scan. All seems fine. Took a while to do the test as 1) my bladder was full to bursting so I had to part empty it twice so he could get a clearer view and 2) it was worse because I have a backwards-facing womb apparently- he was surprised noone had mentioned it before lol! Not sure what it means? anyone?

Anyway, nuchal measurement was 1.7mm. Nasal bone present. My risk (just for being 36) was 1 in 250. Taking my measurement into account, the risk came down to 1 in 2000 so happy with that. I mentioned that I was planning to have triple blood test with mw at 15 weeks and he said not to- either you take bloods at same time to get a combined risk or don't do it later, as will get different risks and the blood test isn't as accurate anyway.

Now my next worry (got to have something to worry about) is spina bifida- is anyone else as bad as me for taking their folic acid? I only remember to take my multi-vit maybe every 3 days and sometimes take 2 to make up for it. Not ideal I know...

llareggub · 13/11/2008 19:36

I had a c-section and was in pain for 4-5 days, and took painkillers. At home I felt "bruised" and was quite stiff as a result. However, by week 4 I was absolutely fine and signed fit to drive.

I'm ambivalent about the prospect of a second c-section, as dealing with a toddler and a newborn will present challenges I did not deal with previously. But, a VBAC means continuous monitoring so won't be the waterbirth I'd love, but will mean a strap around my bump monitoring the baby. I'm going to discuss it with my consultant tomorrow.

Interestingly, he was not on duty at in my first pregnancy when the decision was made to induce me, which eventually led to an emergency c-section at 37 weeks. He visited me afterwards to tell me that he would not necessarily have made the same decision as his registrar, implying that he would not have induced me. The c-section meant a week long stay in hospital, which really puts me off a repeat performance as I developed an infection afterwards.

All in all, I found the recovery time fairly quick.

bekkaboo · 13/11/2008 19:40

I had E CS under GA and although the after bit was ok its not an experience i wish to repeat with a toddler in tow!

Im concerned about the anomaly scan at 23+4, as feel if their was a major prob time wouldn't be on my side if you see what i mean. Just think its a little late for by likingx
