I have no idea, but I am going to ask them what they can do. If it is just that he has all of a sudden turned into a lazy baby, can I refuse the monitoring without taking a huge risk? If there is something wrong, why aren't they doing anything? If they send me to the cons. what's he going to do that they haven't? Blah blah blah.....

GYo · 13/11/2008 16:22

Hi Sorky
Love reading about your homebirth experiences

What kind of pool did you hire?

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 13/11/2008 16:22

i dont know what eklse to suggest. I know i had to go in for daily monitoring with DS, that was because my back waters had gone, i was still feeling movements but they wanted to check his HB all the same!! seemed rediculous but i did it because they said to. Now i've had more children i have more knowledge myself of whats normal and whats not... and i'd have to say if i went from feeling lots of movements to none i'd be worried and get them to do everything to find out the cause...

though that probably doesn't help either!!

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 13/11/2008 16:23

GYo- i know you can buy 'pool in a box' type things online for around £100... and i'm sure that some hire companies charge about the same amount. And you can always re-sell the one you buy... thats what i intended to do if i got a pool!!

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 13/11/2008 16:27

pool-in-a-box

NatalieJaneIsPregnantAgain · 13/11/2008 16:33

Thanks Glask

I am off now - parents evening. Will probably be back on before I go to the hospital, DH is going to be late-ish tonight so I expect I'll have some time to kill.

I bought a pool-in-a-box thingy for the planned HB with DS2, never used it, sold it on eBay for more than I paid for it!

GYo · 13/11/2008 16:46

thanks Glask- sent link to my DH

Looks great for general lounging in!

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 13/11/2008 16:56

I've just measured up in my living room to see how much room it would actually take up!! I'd have to remove DS's train table into the dining room but it's do-able!!!

I'm seriously considering it now!!!

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 13/11/2008 17:03

oh dear- i'm getting teritorail about my oranges now!!!

I've just given the kids half an apple each for pudding, i was cutting up my very last orange, DC's both said 'we want a bit of orange please mummy' so i cut a quarter of my orange in half for them!!! i'm now left with only 3 quarters and want to cry!! I'm resenting the kids for taking my precious orange!!!!

I hire a heated filtered pool for 5 weeks in total.
It's got solid sides, not the inflatable ones (they remind me of paddling pools).
It sits in my living room for 3 weeks beforehand and i LOVE it!!
'GentleWater' are the firm i've used this time because she had a deal on whereby the hire period had a £100 off, as business was a bit slow. So the whole thing is being fed-ex'd up from Brighton and back for £270, a complete bargain!!

The pool comes with a soft lid that press-studs on to stop littlees getting in, or in our case tossing stuff in it. It also keeps the heat in.
Once set up with a bath load of hot water and topped up to the right level with cold/lukewarm, you set the temp to 37 degrees and it takes about another 2 hours or so to get to that, but once that's done it keeps a constant temp.
We switch it off on a night and in the morning it goes back on and the temp is usually about 32-34 degrees, by the time everyone is breakfasted it's ready to go.

The major advantage of this is that Dh does not have to keep adding buckets of hot water, the m/w's relax because they know the temp is constant and everyone just concentrates on the birth.
I honestly couldn't be doing with anyone faffing round me whilst birthing wondering if the temp was okay.

It has a filter in the pool to keep it clean and we empty and refill every 5 days or so (well Dh does).
The poo is gonna happen anyway Diege, better to fish than mop I reckon
There's no mess either as everything is contained within the pool if you birth in it.

Dh has the unenviable job of cleaning the pool the day after the birth (we stick the lid on and leave it until the next day).
This is done by emptying the water through a hose down the toilet which takes most of the 'bits' with it, but he still maintains "it's the grimmest job[he's] ever done".

Provided the baby arrives on time or thereabouts Dh'll clean & refill it, then sit in it with the kids from the minute he gets up. Everyone loves it

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 13/11/2008 17:22

you know what sorky- my DH would never EVER be able to clean it out afterwards.... and i doubt i'd want to between feeding a new baby and learning to cope with 3DC's... DH is a hemophobic and passes out just with the sound of me pushing, can't see or talk about blood or anything related. I expect he'll pass out during my labour again this time!! he did 4/5 times when i had DD, 2nd midwife arrived and saw to him downstairs before coming up to check on us!!

kayzisexpecting · 13/11/2008 18:07

Glask, your poor DH passing out. One of my teachers at school was Hemophobic. We were all told if we hurt ourselves to leave the room(if possible) as quickly as possible.

I feel quite bad this evening. Bad back pains, lots of BH's and just generally feeling uncomfortable. I want my baby!!!

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 13/11/2008 18:18

I'm feeling a bit sicky this evening.... have made an app to see the GP on monday for some more cyclazine.

Sorry your feeling poo aswell Kayz, it'll all be over soon enough!!

NatalieJaneIsPregnantAgain · 13/11/2008 18:19

Good news I think, have rang hospital, MW said to give him a chance, eat dinner, sit for an hour in front of telly with hands on belly, and really concentrate on any movements, if he moves then great, if not then I'll have to go back in. Let's just hope it works!

Will be last post tonight I expect, DH is due home any sec. kids going mad to have their pudding, and I am going to enjoy my dinner and sit down!

G'night all xxx

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 13/11/2008 18:21

night Nat- will text you in an hour or so to see how you are!!x

kayzisexpecting · 13/11/2008 18:23

Nat, I'll try and give you some of DS2's movements. He wont stop wriggling and it's getting quite painful now. I swear he is headbutting my bladder.

Glask, I blame you!!! I just had to buy some satsumas earlier today!!

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 13/11/2008 18:40

they're good Kayz- dont be complaining!!! at least i've not given you my sweety cravings!!!

tinkisexcitedabouthavingababy · 13/11/2008 18:45

good luck nat

SesHashadafab12weekscan · 13/11/2008 19:40

Hi!
Work really got in the way of MN today! Not good! Have skim read the day.

NJ - Hope he wakes up this evening. Take care.

Diege - glad MW went well. IME as a pharmacist, maxolon (also known as metoclopramide) is the mildest. Stemetil is generally good and so is cyclizine. Although cyclizine can sometimes make you a bit light headed and more drowsy than the other two.
Anyway, hope the stemetil does the job.

Re home birth. It does appeal but probably not for the first. (how many are we planning?!)

Re waterbirth. I think I'll definitely enquire about the facilities at the hospital.

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 13/11/2008 20:16

Ses- I feel very light-headed, tired and drowzy on the Cyclazine... but thats a small price to pay to not be sick any more!!!

I'd have had a home birth with DS had we been in our own home, but we were renting. With DD we'd bought our house by then so i felt more comfortable with it.

Diege · 13/11/2008 20:16

NAT, have to say I agree with GLASK and if no movements I would really want the consultant to get involved, but then I am a reral worrier (excessively so).
On that subject am worrying about safety of stemitol (I know, I know...) SES can you reassure me? I know that no drugs are considered risk free in pregnancy due to ethics of testing etc, but wondered if there was any evidence for anecdotal safety etc? Think my mum worried me a bit (as a nurse) saying how strong it was .
TINKS - blood count thing seems a bit harsh, though I suppose it depends on what you started with. 10.5 is quite respectable I would say! There's also a lot of iron in seeds in you can stomach them - pumpkin especially and tinned tomatoes too.
SORKY, you're right about the poo . I mentioned hb to dh tonight and his reaction was 'No way, it's not safe' May have to compromise and go to low risk birth 'suite' instead...though whenever I see the word 'suite' warning bells ring...
Off now I think - bed beckons - good luck tonight NAT, and good luck for tomorrow HEEBS!!!!

sorkycake · 13/11/2008 20:20

Spinach is super high in iron Tink. So is red meat and prunes.

Ses can I email you a question oh pharmaceutical one?

sorkycake · 13/11/2008 20:21

ooh no hang on, not spinach, I think it's a myth

kayzisexpecting · 13/11/2008 20:23

Diege, I had Vertigo while expecting DS and that is what they gave me. GP said its fine during pregnancy. He said its normally given to people like you with really bad morning sickness.

I'm already in my PJs but they are so much more comfortable.

Getting worried about BF in public now. I'm hoping I'll work it out before xmas day so I can feed happily at mums.
