Biglips It is generally believed that the waters go first and then the contractions start, but this is really too simplistic. In truth, your body does all kinds of things to gear up for labour, sometimes they are noticeable, and sometimes they are not depending on the position of the baby and the woman.

For this reason, it is also a bit of a contentious issue of when the beginning of labour 'actually' is. Why aren't BH's just very early labour for example?

However, it is likely, that once your waters have broken, the head pressing on the cervix causes more painful and more productive contractions. Waters NOT breaking CAN mean that the baby's head is cushioned and therefore do not cause the same level of pain and productivity. Sometimes this will mean that the woman is in labour for a long time, but not painful, and may not even notice until nearer the end.

Most women are on a continuum in that they don't notice or believe they are in labour until the waters break and they NOTICE the contractions more iyswim.

Ninja It is very unlikely they HAD to pop your waters, unless the baby was born inside a complete sack. Often they will do it to artificially speed up labour though. Did they give you a reason for it?

Notsoslimnow Leave your nipples alone! Don't interfere with the natural process at this stage UNLESS you have reason to suspect your LO will be born prem (which it's a bit late for now).

ninja · 15/09/2008 16:23

Yes I think they did it to speed up labour - I'd been there for hours and hours and I wasn't really in a fit stage to ask at that point. What are the problems associated with breaking them?

I will be asking that that doesn't happen this time

BabyStarlettsBeautiful · 15/09/2008 16:37

Mustsleep Sorry to hear you are uncomfortable. Try to express off a little just to make yourself more comfortable. The result may be one or two days longer with fullish breasts, but better 7 days fullish and comfortable than 5 days sore. Also, if painful take ibroprufen, but if get feverish or feel unwell see your GP. HTH

Ninja Any intervention CAN lead to further intervention. Breaking your waters has a slight increased chance of infection, especially if then labour takes its time. It also reduces the ability of the baby to move into an optimal position, which can actually slow down labour at best, but lead to forcepts delivery or c/section at worst. Labour is also more painful once the waters have broken so the woman is more likely to want to have an epidural which also increases the chances of further intervention iyswim.

Trouble is, woman are quite vulnerable when in labour and if told something can be done to speed things up, will most likely agree. It is also often hospital policy to start interfering if labour is progressing slowly. You have a right to refuse, but most women are not in any mood to ask questions or refuse the recommendations of a hcp.

Why would you ask for it not to happen this time?

My sister has just sent me a nice email to make me feel better about being overdue, and I am having to resist sending one back informing her that I am hormonal, miserable, overweight and in no condition to be cheered up by jolly little 'only 8 days at most until induction' comments to cheer me up. She is only trying to be nice, bless her, and should not be subject to the wrath of an overdue pregnant lady.

On the basis that Lollipop is bound to have had her baby by now, I am officially the most overdue person on this thread. Pah.

Thanks for the waters infor starlight - interesting to read, even if it prob won'tt apply to me (although rather liking the idea of less painful labour - maybe I should stop hoping for my waters to break!)

I also feel the time is coming to attempt some nipple stimulation with the breast pump...

ninja · 15/09/2008 16:50

Thanks BabyStarlettsBeautiful a lot of that makes sense. It had been painful before and probably did get more so. I ended up with an episiotomy and ventouse delivery (although no mark as I think they just needed to turn her a little)

I'm hoping for a home birth this time and want as little intervention as poss. I've asked them not to bring pethidine as well.

I trust the community midwives more and will discuss this with them.

BabyStarlettsBeautiful · 15/09/2008 16:58

Good luck lollipop!

Also wondering what happened to Notcitrus. Hope she's okay!

mamamufin · 15/09/2008 17:06

Hi guys
Its not going to be today for me .

blimey · 15/09/2008 17:26

hopefully sorry to bring up a potential problem but peeing a lot and drinking a lot can be a sign of high sugar, esp as you are baking lots of yummy sweet things - when is your next urine check? it's prob all fine as we prob need to drink loads at this stage anyway, but I thought I should let you know.

notsoslim foxytocin did a good link on how to hand express colostrum, if you can't find it perhaps she will repost?

Lolli yay at last, hope it goes well!

Pidge have a lovely lovely birthday

still not me neither!! but I'm still happy so far.......

hopefully · 15/09/2008 17:44

Blimey that did occur to me too, but levels were fine when urine tested last thurs, and have a test again this thursday, so assuming that I continue to feel ok (and the thirst doesn't get worse!) I'll wait till then. Will definitely give her a call if it gets worse though. Possibly I should lay off the muffins for a day as well!

Nothing doing for me today either... but this doesn't come as a surprise!

ipanemagirl · 15/09/2008 17:48

all the best to you notcitrus wherever you are!!

BabyStarlettsBeautiful · 15/09/2008 18:17

Notcitrus' lasr post on Wed 10th.....

'It's just occurred to me that period-type pains for a minute or two every 20 minutes might be a sign of something happening... but knowing me, probably a sign of something gearing up to happen in a week or two...'

I hope the time passed means only that she is busy with her LO!

ellideb · 15/09/2008 18:41

Hiyah everyone. It might be the start of something for me. I woke up feeling really emotional this morning and have been feeling like my periods coming all day- all tearful with strong BH's, mild cramps, backache and a feeling of pressure in my back. This can go on for days though, so I've heard but I'm hoping it means this week! My sister's come up from Cardiff but has to return on saturday for uni monday so I'd really be dissapointed if she misses her nephew, also my doula has other comittments from this friday (long story, beyond her control) so I'm really counting on this baba to arrive before friday! My fingers are crossed! Positive labour vibes to all of those who are also overdue! XX

becaroo · 15/09/2008 19:29

Hi Jenny - I'm ok. Still here anyway! I think everyday that "this could be the day!" and it never is My ds gave my bump a severe talking to this morning but it hasnt helped!

I too am impressed at your ability to withstand Ikea...it is the fifth circle of hell IMO. Glad you got out without going into labour!!!! (I do, however, get a childish urge to laugh at some of the names of their stuff - "I'll have two ploppy wardrobes please!"

I was wondering abut notcitrus too today...hope shes ok.

My dh paternity leave/hols debacle is getting more ridicuous by the minute - really dont need this at the moment. It must be lovely to work for a big multinational company that actually has decent staff benefits (sigh)

Thanks to all those for the constipation tips - been out to get some fybogel today so going to chug some down before bed and see what happens (or doesnt as the case may be!)

Ellideb - oooh, hope so! Good luck! x

biglips · 15/09/2008 19:44

oooow!!!

this Bh's/contractions is giving me the runs!!

hmm.....

happy birthday Pidge....hoping you had a lovely day today?

plusonemore · 15/09/2008 19:45

my dh also has crap paternity- 2wks at statutory, so he has saved up some holiday to use. i reckon in those circumstances they should get the statutory paternity pay on top of holiday pay dont you?x

plusonemore · 15/09/2008 19:47

oooh biglips.... sounds promising!

biglips · 15/09/2008 19:48

i hope i wont be crapping all over the delivery bed in the hosp .....i would die of shame and put a brown paper bag over my head till i leave the hosp

plusonemore · 15/09/2008 19:50

biglips
a) you'll have done it all by then
b) it'll be the last thing on your mind...!

BabyStarlettsBeautiful · 15/09/2008 19:54

biglips Wow! Your body clears itself out BEFORE you go into labour so nothing gets in the way of the baby coming down. Also, ideally you won't be on a bed delivering. Upright me dear.......

biglips · 15/09/2008 19:57

AS you all know that ive got a sweep booked in for this Friday....what would happen if im so many cm's dilated...do they just leave the membrane alone and let nature take course and send me home or to the hosp where im having the baby? im having a sweep at a Antenatal clinic which is not at the hosp.

i took a walk to the shops today...only 5 mins walk one way and was bowled over by the stabbing pain in my lower tummy.

splishsplosh · 15/09/2008 20:07

Happy birthday Pidge
Congratulations Happymummy and Jearund, lovely birth story Ponymum
Hope Lolli you have had your baby by now and labour doesn't drag out too long like the pregnancy

Ouch ouch ouch, am having shooting pains around the bottom of my bump like baby is pressing on a nerve or something, so painful. Also keep feeling like the head is in my bum. V uncomfortable.

I'm impressed anyone has energy to bake and clean, and most of all visit Ikea... I just want to sleep, and rest. Felt quite dizzy and odd when out in the park with dd and walking home yesterday.

BabyStarlettsBeautiful · 15/09/2008 20:08

Are you having BH now?

BabyStarlettsBeautiful · 15/09/2008 20:09
