mummyhill · 23/02/2005 16:38

Ok here goes.

Hope the dreadful weather doesn't last long enough to need spikey shoes!!

On the travel system front mine is great still use it with dd but since she is getting bigger and my back is buggered we have a small telescopic one for in the car and use the travel system when i am going out without the car. However that will all change in September when I will have to cart the travel system everywhere!!!!

Double pushchair/buggy is not an issue as dd is three and does walk most places will get a buggy board though especially for coming home from nursery (Can't believe she starts full time in september).

On the birthday grouping topic we have bil 3rd sept, me 6th sept, sister 13th sept, mil 14th sept and this one id ue the 8th!!!!!!

On subject of GP's not listening to you I spent 6 months arguing with mine that dd was not just wheezy she is asthmatic. They eventually gave in and agreed with me after 3 trips to A&E, what is a mother supposed to do?

Any travel advice ladies? We are going to euro Disney in a fortnight by tunnel, taking our own car!

Right - I've just fired off an email to the head of midwifery to request a homebirth (I'm outside the hosp's catchment area so have to persuade her) - wish me luck!

Diane, that sounds like particularly rubbish treatment from your GP - antibiotics are doled out far too liberally as it is IMO and that just sounds downright lazy and careless, especially with a toddler FGS.

jessysmummy · 23/02/2005 17:36

Franch, I know it's a bit late as you've already fired off your email but couldn't you tell the midwife that you are intending to move into their catchment area before the birth? Not far from the truth as you ARE intending to move.

zubb · 23/02/2005 17:40

good luck Franch ! Are your area quite pro-home births?

franch · 23/02/2005 17:42

Thanks jm - I did mention the move, but was perhaps foolishly honest - said we might end up in the catchment area, but that if not, we wouldn't be far. Didn't want to end up with her withdrawing her approval nearer the time! Fingers crossed, anyway ...

If the answer's no, we'll have to go for another hosp (won't know which one makes most sense till we move) or an indep m/w (which I'd like to do anyway, just can't justify the expense if I can wangle decent NHS care)

OP posts:
franch · 23/02/2005 17:45

Thanks zubb! Not sure about my area, really - it's certainly not one of the pioneering areas with fabulous one-to-one care and all that, but I think most of the local hosps are reasonably switched on. The GP I mentioned homebirth to last time was very anti, but this time round I saw a different GP and he was fine with it. The midwife I saw at my booking appt (the one who told me to write to the head of midwifery) was very encouraging.

OP posts:
zubb · 23/02/2005 17:49

I've found the GPs here aren't always very supportive, but as long as the midwifes are on side you should be OK.

franch · 23/02/2005 17:55

Absolutely. Just reread your posts from thread #1 - sounds like you're getting really good care

OP posts:
franch · 23/02/2005 19:31

Well! The head of midwifery emailed me straight back with a really lovely response, saying to call her anytime (gave me her mobile no.), that they'd always have time for me, and that I'm going to have a great time with this birth, and to please use all their services to help me achieve this.

However ... she says whether or not they can do my homebirth for me depends on exactly where we move to. If we're just across the postcode border, they can do it. In the meantime she's given me details of how to access care at one of their community clinics so that I can get to know the community team.

Well - her response has confirmed my instincts about this hosp, but I wish I knew if they could do it or not. I don't think it'll be long before we move (into temporary rented accommodation, which is where we'll probably still be in Sept), but I don't want to start off down the road of care with them only to find out I have to switch. (One of my priorities is to get to know the m/ws who'll deliver #2 in advance, after having the m/w from hell deliver DD.) May look into the indep m/w option again, although I guess if we rent we might be able to deliberately choose somewhere in/near the catchment area ... Hmm. Why does it have to be so complicated?!

OP posts:
zubb · 23/02/2005 19:39

were you likely to be moving into the catchment area anyway? if you were then it's something to definatley keep in mind when looking at places. Sounds like it would be worth it as they sound like a good community team.
Mine is a community team, and I think over the last two pregnancies I've met them all at one stage or another. I've never had anything but great care and help from them, but even the midwifes I had with ds1 in hospital were all great so I've been very lucky.
Hope it all works out for you - when are you thinking of moving?

jessysmummy · 24/02/2005 07:13

Morning all!
Just seen DH and dd1 off in the snow. Been sick already and currently fighting nausea with a toasted teacake, though I don't think 1 will be enough! Was kind of hoping that DH would be snowed in this am and we could have had a nice family day (with me disappearing every so often to puke my guts up!) Going a bit stir crazy as I haven't been out of the house in a week as you've probably guessed from all my posts on MN at all times of the day. Scared to travel too far from the toilet!
Franch, that midwife team does sound great and I hope you get to use them. Zubb's right - you must bear that in mind when you are moving especially if it's only into temporary accommodation. As you had such a bad time with dd1 it will be worth it if only to keep you more relaxed leading up to the birth. I just don't have the confidence in my community midwives for a home birth. Actually the one that I saw most the last time round was fab but she was away when I had dd1 and I ended up with 2 really inept ones for my home visits. That's the main reason why I'm going back to LWH even though my local hospital is only 2 miles away. Just don't want to risk getting one of those rubbish midwives. And I had a great (is there such a thing?) delivery at LWH. Because it's a women's hospital its catchment area is wider so they take poeple from all over the Northwest. Better the devil you know!

jessysmummy · 24/02/2005 07:21

OMG!
I've just read the ad at the top of this page (see how bored I am!) about stem cell collection from your newborn. How scary is that? Would you honestly trust them not to use the cells for research/cloning, etc.???? Unbelievable.

Sallie · 24/02/2005 09:03

Why doesn't it snow properly in London? Would love it to settle for DS as he gets sooo excited about the snow. Also would love to get cut off from work - unlikely as I live in SW London and work in the City. Sadly Law Firms never close down!

zubb · 24/02/2005 09:33

No snow in Salisbury either, just five minute flurriws here and there.

Jessysmummy - they are unlikely to be able to take enough for research purposes and you will know how much has been taken, also the UK does have just about the strictest licences for research on stem cells in the world, so I really don't think that would be a problem.

YOKEFLEET · 24/02/2005 09:35

JM you can have some of our snow from South Yorkshire if you like we have plenty!! It has been murder trying to walk anywhere this morning as it is so slippy roll on summer!!

Boompi · 24/02/2005 10:00

Well had my official dating scan yesterday. Very quick and just agreed with my LMP dates. Can organise nuchal through NHS in time - as I suspected so have a private scan booked next tues evening. So 4 scans in 4 weeks! And all very different. Dont mind though as love seeing little one

We are flying to California to see friends next week so hope my fatigue passes soon. Was supposed to be a skiing trip but dont think I am going to risk it. I will just read a lot of books! Anyone have an opinion about using hot tubs btw? I know they advise against it but surely a quick dip cant hurt?

zubb · 24/02/2005 10:31

Hi Boompi, glad the scan went well.
Not sure about hot tubs, the signs at the gym tell you not to use them or the sauna etc when pregnant. Doesn't seem much different to having a hot bath though does it - so ask your midwife if you are worried. Have a great trip!

YOKEFLEET · 24/02/2005 10:35

Boompi - I agree with Zubb, all signs I have seen said not to but Midwife will tell you. Glad all was well yesterday

Jeepers · 24/02/2005 13:08

Hello! Have not posted for a while as it has been an horrendous few weeks. Family funerals, illness, bleeding, exams, weeks of night shifts, you name it..... However I had my nuchal scan yesterday and it was brilliant! Heard the heartbeat (freaky!) and saw the wee sprog bouncing around like a mad thing.

Its like a great weight has been lifted as I have been imagining the worst for a few weeks now and I am going to try and relax and enjoy things more now. Allowing myself to feel excited now which is nice. Best of all we can tell people.

Sadly the breasts continue to expand (not in a attractive, sexy way either!) Have you heard the phrase "over the shoulder boulder holder"....?

zubb · 24/02/2005 15:10

Jeepers, sorry to hear you've had such a bad couple of weeks, but great news about the scan. Hope you enjoy the rest of the pregnancy!

PiccadillyCircus · 24/02/2005 19:17

DS and I are now up in Liverpool with my mum and dad. They've gone out to get fish and chips - I am planning tpo tell them about Mark 2 when we are eating. Feeling rather nervous as I have no idea what their reaction will be...

Wish me luck .

moschops · 24/02/2005 19:24

hi girls......i'm sneaking in here as a latecomer!

have been arguing with midwife about my dates and had my scan today, the consultant has given me a due date of 4th sept which is later than even i anticipated so i am hopping between here and the August thread.

hope to get to know you all!!

franch · 24/02/2005 19:43

Hi moschops, welcome to September! Go on, add yourself to our stats thread

zubb: no, we probably wouldn't move into the hosp's catchment area but might stay near it, especially if renting. I've emailed the Head of M/wfy back to check exactly what their rules are so that I can, as you say, bear that in mind when choosing where to rent.

Boompi & Jeepers, great to hear about your happy scans - although sorry you've had such an awful time lately Jeepers.

PC - fish and chips!!! Does that mean you're feeling better? Actually the idea rather appeals to me, which MUST be a good sign! Maybe I'll text DH to get some on his way home ......

Only sick once today and feeling much better after a therapeutic trip to the hairdressers (I've been sadly neglecting myself the last 6 or 7 weeks). I am DETERMINED that tomorrow will be a good day and I will venture out with Mum & DD - maybe to one of our flash local maternity boutiques! Or to the library for DD if I'm feeling dutiful ....

Hi Moschops! Welcome to the September thread Go on go on go on go on and add yourself to the stats thread. Why the arguments about due date? Did the controversy spring from the scan? Thought I'd seen you on the TtC threads - or am I wrong?

moschops · 25/02/2005 09:05

thankyou for the lovely welcome!!

yes Pooka you did see me on the ttc threads. i had really irregular cycles after coming off the pill, so they dated me from my last period when i actually ov'd and conceived over a month later.

dp got a bit upset last night when i said 'i can't wait to feel the baby move' he kind of looked all sad and said ' i'll never know what that feels like.......i'm quite envious' bless him, just lately he's been struggling a bit i think to absorb it as he is just a bystander while all this 'happens' to me. he really enjoyed the scan yesterday, i think it's the first time he really felt part of it.

well i should go and attempt to do some housework!!
