hatty I have a 2nd hand car seat from a friend, I wouldn't buy one 2nd hand, but I am sure a friend wouldn't say it hadn't been in crash if it had if you see what I mean, especially if you are not buying it off them. But then if you are really worried about it maybe get a new one? We may end up getting a new one, but at least we have one ready now in case we don't!

verso hope you are feeling better! Your job sounds quite stressful, with travelling and presentations, etc, even without being ill!

Beans33 · 24/09/2008 11:39

thanks Veggie - do you think it's wrong to dislike him so much? Honestly - it's awful. I feel terribly guilty for it, but he screamed from the moment he was born to about 3. Now his Dad tries to discipline him and he just goes straight to my sister and she is really soft with him - directly undermining her husband. I don't really get on with my brother in law, but I do feel sorry for him when that happens. Consequently the little boy is a total brat and so spoilt. I know I can't judge as I'm not a parent yet and maybe I'll be the same. But I can't help thinking you have to be united on the discipline front and also be quite strict with your children, so they learn to behave.

Re the dogs - very wise getting your DS to learn to pat them gently and not run up to them. Dogs are generally lovely, but the odd scary one does appear.

Indith · 24/09/2008 12:16

Poor you Verso, hope it all goes well.

Hatty I'd def go for it from someone you trust, I'd never buy a second hand one from unknown origins but if you know it hasn't been involved in a crash then it is just the same as using your own for subsequent children.

Dh working from home today, have just put ds down for a nap so I'm off to aqua natal. Looking forward to it as I loved it last time, just hope ds sleeps as long as he usually does else I'll have a bit of an irate dh to come home to!

Veggiemummy · 24/09/2008 12:18

it is very different when it is your own, things i swore i would never let my son do i let him do and i'm a lot softer with him than i thought i would be but at the same time kids needs boundaries it just depends how you enforce them. It is probably a good idea to chat to your DH now about how you want to discipline your kids and in future if your DH says or does something to your DC you didnt agree with or like don't tell him there and then wait until your DC is out of ear shot. If you ever feel you need it there is a really good book called 'the no-cry discipline solution'. if ever there was an instruction book for kids that is it, i tried stuff in it and it was miraculous. But with a lot of these books it depends what style of parenting you want to choose it isn't for everyone.

rosmerta · 24/09/2008 12:24

beans the funeral went well thanks for asking. My aunt gave a eulogy during which I found out stuff I'd never known about my nan! I'm doing ok this week, just catching up sleep-wise as it was a really long day.

Re your nephew, you're right about presenting a united front even if one of you doesn't agree. I was going to say that around 4/5 boys do get a testorone (sp?) surge but it sounds like that's just the way he is unfortunately.

verso hope you're feeling better, poor you

Re dogs, ds is ok with dogs if he's in his pushchair but if he's walking and one comes past he clings on to my legs & won't move. I think its because when we were in the park once, there's a field for dog walkers, he went over to see them & a little puppy came running over and jumped up at him barking. The dog didn't mean any harm but ds has always been a bit nervous since then. I always ask the owner if their dog is ok with children before letting ds pat one.

Ooh, I will have a look at that, thanks Veggie - that's great!

jumpjockey · 24/09/2008 12:34

Hello everyone! Back from our last holiday without a littlun in tow for the next, ooh, 16 years or so but had a lovely time. I'm sure the fact I put on 2kg in a week is purely due to the baby and nothing to do with three course dinners every night and going back for seconds at every meal

Now back at work and my gosh the thread's moved on a lot, will try and catch up with everyone's news later on but for now just to say SummerLightning will you be at yoga tonight, if so I'll try and brave saying hello!

hattyyellow · 24/09/2008 12:40

Cheers all, that's really useful. I do trust my friend and I'm glad others have used second hand seats from reliable sources as well.

Beans your nephew sounds almost like he has some kind of behavioural/attention thing going on - screaming so much and punching someone who is pregnant doesn't sound like normal toddler behaviour to me? My DD's can be violent with eachother when they get frustrated with eachother or something they're trying to do but they wouldn't ever attack an adult..

I think some things you think before you have children are very different in reality, but some you can adhere to. For instance, I always swore I would not bring up fussy eaters, my children would eat everything they were given and DD's can be a nightmare to feed! But I also thought I'd be hot on manners etc and they are good at remembering to say please and thank you etc. I agree that a united front is really important on these things between the parents.

Veggiemummy · 24/09/2008 13:07

oh i so wish i had relented and bought those bloody chocolates yesterday, damn ill placed will power. I just took DS to nursery and thought i would pop into the shop on the way back and get a cheeky chocolate bar, and of course being a it vague today i left my handbag at home. Oh well it's probably caffiene i need and haven't had a coffee today so may as well have one now.

SummerLightning · 24/09/2008 13:08

jj, yes I will be going! I will look out for you, and try and get there a bit earlier than 1 second before the class starts so I can say hello!

zoejeanne · 24/09/2008 13:15

Hi everyone, as usual so much going on!

verso you may have got to the end of the presentation by now, so I hope it went ok. And if you did have to pass on to your deputy I'm sure no-one would mind. Just last week we had a presentation and the speaker had got a chest infection and no voice, so brought someone else. In the end she got through it, but everyone was impressed that she'd brought someone else just in case and didn't think badly of her.

rosmerta glad your nan's funeral was ok, and I hope you've caught up with your sleep - emotions can be so much more tiring than physical activity.

Discipline is something I'm worried about, as I am the first to tut at other peoples badly bahved children, but don't know how hard it is. Also, my DH isn't great with the dog and doesn't insist she does something he's asked her to, so I'm pretty sure I'll end up being bad cop to his good cop. He has already agreed we need to be a team on it, but not sure if he'll be bothered. I'm sure we'll muddle through somehow.

Time for an odd question - I've got maternity tights on for the first time today, btu not sure if I've got them on the right way round, as the gusset is heading for my knees far too often. The picture on the pack showed the 2 seams on the bump and 1 on the back - have I put them on right? As if tights are so complicated!

emmanbump · 24/09/2008 13:50

Hi All,

Big hugs all round.

Work is a lot calmer today thank goodness. Makes for a much nicer working environment.

Verso Hope you are feeling a bit better and hope your presentation went ok. I would be in tears being away from home feeling ill and having to do a presentation .

Chutney your poor DD1 was it a bad bite? Hope not.

ZJ those tights sound complicated. Never used them so cant help.

Hatty glad you asked the question about the car seat as we have been offered the use of a second hand one from a friend and I was a bit nervous about accepting.

PinguRocks · 24/09/2008 14:26

Hello ladies. Hope everyone starts to feel better soon....

Am working from home today, so have the chance to actually post, rather than just lurking!

Trying to remember all that I've read:

Maternity tights - the two seams definitely go at front. I have tried a few different brands and I think the gussett round the knees problem comes from them being too big!

Re: prams/pushchairs - we have settled on the icandy cherry. Of everything, I have found this to be the most stressful aspect - too much choice, no obvious perfect solution out there, grrrrrr! I just couldn't bear the endless research and then looking/trying them out so am quite relieved it's sorted. Well, I haven't actually ordered it yet or anything but I figure that's the easy part.

I have started to look at nurseries this week. Seems very strange to be doing it so early but I've been scared by people telling me about waiting lists 18 months long.....

Will no doubt post more as it comes to me.....

Olipop · 24/09/2008 16:29

Wahooo caught up again!
You poor old lot...everyones been having such a rough time .
Hopefully all on the up now....we're all going to start blooming!

zoejeanne · 24/09/2008 17:26

Thanks pingu - as I have very short legs, too big is a likely problem - at least I'm not wearing them back to front!!

Have a good evening all

Veggiemummy · 24/09/2008 20:17

i think veggiebaby may have turned and gotten into a head down position last night i was up coming back from the toilet (for like the 50th time to do a wee) at around midnight and i had this funny feeling in my belly then there was loads of sudden movement, and now i've just noticed that i seem to have an extra foot out in front.

i also seem to have settled my indigestion down just in time for some sciatica, i did some yoga today which helps stretch hips and lower back and that helped for a while but now it's back with a vengence, i really wish we weren't going to down to London this weekend we have to drive because DS needs to take his bike for the race but then he is staying london because he is working there all next week so i have to drive back by myself, which don't really mind too much but then i'll have to unpack his bike and a load of baby stuff we are getting from a friend.

sorry just feeling a bit whingy, good news is i went M&S and got a little treat for myself for dessert tonight.

EnchantedWithEdwardCullen · 24/09/2008 20:36

hiya

how are you all?

Im very excited cause Ill be in the 3rd trimester on Friday!

Im starting to get all out of breath now, I sould like a pug dog after a short walk, lol.

I see we have a new thread coming up soon,

can we call it

Due Dec 08 - Braxton hicks, baby kicks and leaking nips!

I started it about a month ago and realised we were only part through the current thread --- preggy head strikes again!

EnchantedWithEdwardCullen · 24/09/2008 20:38

Oh its Disenchantedplusbump BTW!

You know I bought loads of maternity pants in a size 14 at about 12 weeks and they were all massive, i put them away and only remembered today and half of them are too small!

pmsl!

Veggiemummy · 24/09/2008 21:15

i think i'm the 3rd trimester now, does it start at 28weeks?

that thread title sounds perfect. that is a bummer about the maternity gear, a pair of maternity 3/4 length jeans things i got are starting to get a bit tight, luckily i won't be able to wear them soon because of the weather. But i also bought a pair of maternity tracksuit bottoms and they fitted in the shop but now they are too big!!! Luckily i bought 2 custard choux buns (i swear M&S make these names up) and about to embark on them and a punnet of strawberries.

rosmerta · 25/09/2008 08:35

Hi enchanted! I'm also into my 3rd trimester (30 weeks )

veggie, your pudding sounded yummy! I'm trying to stay away from the sweet stuff as the amount I was eating was getting ridiculous. Plus dh needs to start his marathon training soon & wants to start on a healthier diet now.

Is anyone else having trouble with their lower back & hips during the night? They ache so much & to turn over I pretty much have to sit up & then move. Also in the morning, it seems to take a while to limber up to even be able to walk properly.

OP posts:
EffiePerine · 25/09/2008 09:32

rosmerta: yes to achy hips, though pillows help. Starting to feel v cumbersome, though the overeating seems to be on the way out thanks to heartburn .

Got what I promise to be my final little set of baby clothes from Ga yesterday - a (IMO) lovely retro 70s stripy brown and orange jumpsuit thingy with matching socks. DH laughed. I blame the hormones .

Am feeling cross becasue I bought a load of lovely baby wool yesterday and can't find the sodding pattern book! May need to buy another one (grrr).

Olipop · 25/09/2008 09:37

Hello Rosmerta...yes...my hips are really achey and (TMI alert) my pelvic bone at the front hurts too. Feels like I've been kicked in it!
DS was having nightmares last night poor little soul and kept disturbing me. Leaping up out of bed is not as easy as it used to be!
Consequently I then had nightmares too (serves me right for watching one of those truely awful Ross Kemp on Gangs that we'd recorded. I don't know why I did it as I knew it would disturb the hell out of me). I thought that my house was surrounded by gangs that wanted to get in and then that DH had bought DS a tarrantula (?!?!?!) which had escaped! Ah the pregnant brain is a wonderful thing!

Beans33 · 25/09/2008 09:59

Oh wow, Oli - I had a really vivid dream last night. I was swimming and the baby was kicking loads (and was vaguely aware in periphery of consciousness that it was happening in reality too). So I put my hand on it and there was it's own little hand - shape clearly visible through my tummy - reaching out to touch mine. And the lights in the pool were such that they highlighted my tummy and made it slightly translucent, so I could see my little baby's face. It was amazing. I'm now a bit tearful. How pathetic? But it was the best dream I think I've ever had!! Feeling very happy today as a result.

emmanbump · 25/09/2008 10:26

Morning everyone,

Wow very vivid dreams Beans and Oli

I burst into tears on my journey home from work last night (had been thinking how not emotional I was feeling prior to that ) was just a bit overwhelmed as my tube line home has had problems 3 out of 4 nights now and I didn't sleep that well the night before.

Had a much better night last night and feel better for the emotional outburst and sleep.

Hope everyone else is feeling on the up today too!!!

Olipop · 25/09/2008 10:44

Oh Beans - that is so lovely!!! Much better than spiders and homeys!!!!
I know how you feel emmanbump...I had to stand all the way to work today and wouldn't normally be that phased but I actually felt really hot and a bit sick. Strangely everyone around me for the entire 30 minute journey seemed to be asleep and didn't open their eyes once...strange huh!
I know I shouldn't brag but after today (I only work wed/thurs) I only have 3 more weeks at work!
