First time mums expecting Spring babies

Hello!

I'm expecting my first baby on 24 April. I'm currently only 4+4 but have NO symptoms at all! Have just retested as I'm convinced I've imagined it!

Went to Dr yesterday to share the news and have to wait for hospital 'choose & book' paperwork so that I can arrange first scan for around 10 October.

There seems to be so many decisions to make all of a sudden...

Anyway...just wondered how you other first timers were finding things...or your other halves for that matter. Mine is still in total shock in spite of this being a planned baby!

I am pmsl at the diets on this thread! ...fab's are lovely though aren't they?!?!?

flirty/jools - I don't really do the whole superstitions thing - I tend to be very much in the "what will be will be" camp. If you think logically, why would something bad happen just because you told people? Much better to tell your parents if they would be worried about you I think.

I'm very shocked that men don't give up their seats when you are wearing the "baby on board" badge...that's just mean! Sit on their knee????? lol!

PS. Have a look at my top picture on my profile!!!!

Bicnod · 02/10/2008 18:46

Hey Flirty - the way you tell your parents cannot be worse than the way I told mine. I'd just come back from a two week work trip to Ethiopia (found out I was pregnant 6 hours before getting on plane... not great timing) where I didn't take antimalarials (because pregnant). Wasn't going to tell parents about the bean but DH and I were visiting them the weekend after I got back and I became pretty ill: high temperature, low blood pressure, vomiting etc so had to tell them so that mum could drive me to A&E where I ended up being kept in overnight on a drip while they did a billion blood tests to check I hadn't picked up malaria or some other dodgy disease!

I would have liked to have told them over a nice meal or something... oh well, maybe next time

As long as everything is ok we're going to make the bump general knowledge at my 30th birthday party (which is a week and a half after my dating scan) - I figure I have to let the cat out of the bag at that point as everyone would guess anyway as I'm not usually one to abstain from the beers : that's me all redfaced after a normal night out

My cold seems to be FINALLY on its way out. Pheweee.

Nuchal and official dating scan a week on Tuesday... I'm counting down the hours.

daisyj · 02/10/2008 18:59

I'm with CE on the superstitions thing - maybe because of mc, I know that short of being a crack whore there's nothing that will make beanie stick or not unless it's going to (iyswim).

I also really think that you will tell your closest family/friends if anything goes wrong, so you might as well celebrate and enjoy the news when all is well.

And yay for breasts binky - I bought two 32 C bras at the weekend and they are lovely and there is only a little bit of growing room in them

CE - I?m getting into trouble with my usually too large jeans when I sit down as bump has grown in past 24 hours. I have rigged up an arrangement with an elastic band and the button/buttonhole so that they don?t fall down my not-yet-expanded hips when I stand up, but don?t pinch when I sit down. Clever, huh? Where did you get your trousers from?

Jools sounds like you?re doing really well ? I bet the tummy thing is just bloat. I?ve had a pot belly from week 6 and I?m only little. Soon it will be bump-shaped, don?t you worry

Flirty - good luck with breaking the news. It really is exciting once you start to tell people.

Hi to everyone else.

I?m off for a wedding in Devon this weekend, so will check in again next week. Have been having exceptionally erotic dreams the last couple of days so am hoping change of scene and lovely rural B&B will reverse the sex drought!

xx

ChocolateEclair · 02/10/2008 19:51

daisy the trousers were from New Look and were only £20. They are very plain and nice fabric, they "hang" really flatteringly as well! Enjoy the wedding!

I am taking 120 teenagers to run in the Junior Great North run on Saturday! OH THE JOY!!!! At least I don't actually have to run! lol!

heverhoney1 · 03/10/2008 10:49

Morning all. Can someone please reassure me that the worry goes down a bit after the first scan is out of the way?

Also I have my fist midwife appointment on the same morning as my scan does anyone know if they will listen for the heartbeat then? Mainly I am asking because if they do DP will want to be there but if not then he can get away with only having a few hours off in the afternoon for the scan so he wont have to waste a whole day holiday that he could take when bubs arrives (Fingers crossed all being well xxxx)

FlirtyThirty · 03/10/2008 11:20

At my booking in appointment, the midwife didn't listen to the heartbeat - and I would have thought that they probably won't with you if you are heading off for a scan that day. My Dh didn't come to booking in appointment - and to be honest he really didn't need to. It took over an hour but was really just a form filling exercise on family medical history, past/current illnesses and a run down of when future appointments would be. Dh would have been bored and he too couldn't realy afford the time off work. Personally, I'd have DP only join you for the scan and save the time for when baby's around.

Oh, and as for worry...I think it sticks around until baby's all grown up...

Ah Flirty - People were beginning to worry about your whereabouts over on the TTC thread! There have been some fantastic BFPs over there recently- SAZ, SUMMERBIRD and morst recently and Lovely DAWN!!!

skiingone · 03/10/2008 12:13

Hello girls!

Neverhoney - I find it easier for myself to go to a scan mentally prepared for anything ( but hoping for the best ). I went to all 3 scans alone as my DH is really busy at work, but it would be nice to have your partner there.

Unfortunately I think the more you see the baby on scans the more real it all becomes in your mind and you start worrying more as you know what there is to loose.

I'm in a process of getting a cold, so last night I was having nightmares, that I already had a baby, for some reason I was in Vienna with my girlfriend who has 2 kids and she was very unhelpful and wouldn't answer my questions and I felt absolutely on my own and had no idea what to do, tried to breastfeed, but had no milk and then had no idea what to feed it with and was terrified to loose it to hunger....After that I couldn't sleep the rest of the night.

I don't know how it is for others, but the further I go in the more I worry. Should stop really!

Oh, and I bought yesterday a pair of dark blue skinny ( but not totally fitted) maternity jeans from Debnehams at £25. They will not last me for the whole time, but hopefully for the next few months and after pg. They don't look like maternity jeans much but are quite nice and be worn with heels or with boots.

X

Jools1 · 03/10/2008 13:22

Does anyone else sneak into the birth announcements section and sneak a peek at the birth stories ?

They make me smile, laugh and cry, then I just get scared at what is ahead !!

I've also googled Mothercare today to work out where my nearest one is but have resolved not to shop for anything (other than a bigger bra !) before the 12 week scan

FlirtyThirty · 03/10/2008 13:54

Thanks Hever - just popped back over to offer congratulations to the girls! I'm so happy for Dawn Has cheered up my afternoon! Hopefully she'll come over and join us here now...

Jools - I think I have read them all...like to know what I'm in for...

haha, I've stolen your due date evs34... Scan was fine, spot on from previous scan and same edd. I went "public" this week, really scary because now it seems that everyone at work knows as it spread like wildfire (there are quite a few pgs at the minute so it is a bit of a talking point. I hope nothing goes wrong now, that would just be awful!

I have had changes to my stomach since before I knew I was pregnant. I have been in my "big" clothes since 8 weeks. I am looking forward to getting some maternity stuff although I'm really tall and think it will be an absolute nightmare. Plus, I need some really smart stuff for meetings etc, round here you seem to be expected to live in polyester trousers and jeans, which isn't really realistic. (only small clothes branches)

The question is - where is best to go to actually have a decent choice?

Jools1 · 04/10/2008 15:46

Afternoon - you must all be enjoying busy weekends

I've hit the gym, been shopping for larger jeans and tops and am now planning a snooze on the sofa before I go out tonight

daisyj · 06/10/2008 13:21

Hi all. Just came back from a lovely wedding and saw Dawn's announcment on Bonkers Anonymous - so great! I told her to join us on Knicker Checkers Anonymous, but you're quite right Flirty and Hever, she should come here, too!

hever - we'll I'm definitely feeling much less anxious than I was before the 12-week scan, but I think skiingone has a point about how you worry about what you have to lose once the baby has become more of a reality. I'm less anxious about the likelihood of losing it, but more about the repurcussions if I did (iyswim). And as Flirty says, it's only the beginning of years of worry anyway

brettgirl - don't know what your budget is, but Isabella Oliver has some lovely (expensive) work stuff. Generally catalogues are a good bet. You can order whatever you think you might like, try it all on and then send back what you don't want. Means you can even get different sizes to try on - just like being in a shop, only you don't have to try things on in a hot changing room under unflattering light!

Jools - I just read a birth story I really liked where the woman said that because she was so grateful to be having a baby (because she's had a couple of mc's, etc.,) in the later, most painful stages of labour she made a conscious decision that she was going to enjoy it. I'm hoping that will stick with me...

Jools1 · 06/10/2008 14:47

Someone please remind me not to browse birth stories after lunch - they are all so beautiful, they make me cry

Jools1 · 06/10/2008 14:47

Oh, I meant during a lunch break at my desk in an open plan office !

BrightSideOfLife · 06/10/2008 16:10

Hi All, Sorry that I have been so quiet lately - work has been crazy! I was working US hours last week - so was in meetings from 12:30 to 23:00 each day - plus coming in to work around 10 am so I could get a few hours of my 'normal' job done. Thanks goodness it is over

I am doing OK - I had a few days of feeling great - the MS seemed to be better and I had less symptoms...yesterday it was back to square one again - I am now struggling to keep food down, am permanently thirsty, etc etc. Thank goodness for the doppler, it has calmed me down on many paranoid-occasions

jools I know what you mean about the birth stories. There is a thread on childbirth about what happens in the hours immediately after birth in a hospital. I was sniffing away at my desk - some stories were so sweet and it made the whole baby thing seem so real! Did you go shopping anywhere fun for some bigger clothes?

daisyj I love that approach to pain in childbirth (Trying to enjoy the whole experience, including the pain, because of a previous loss).

CE how was your trip to the Junior Great North Run? Sounds like hard work for a Saturday!

Hello everyone else...hope everyone's mondays are going well!

Jools1 · 06/10/2008 16:28

Brightside - nowhere fun for clothes I'm afraid - having been a larger lady for so long - even though I've lost 3 stone, I've retained a real hatred of clothes shopping for myself.

I just went to M&S and got some size 18 jeans that are quite stretchy. They are pretty room at the mo, but my others are too tight as I am horribly bloated. They don't look too bad - a bit baggy round bum and thighs but will do We don't have a lot of spare cash, so I'd rather not spend loads of money on clothes that I may only be able to wear for a few weeks - the jeans were are £12 bargain

BrightSideOfLife · 06/10/2008 16:55

Jools, that sounds good!! Were those jeans on a sale or part of an M&S range?

I am going away for three weeks next month (home to sunny south africa) and am wondering where I will get some decent larger sized / maternity summer clothes, that won't cost a fortune. Like you, I object (i.e. just can't afford!) to
spend a fortune on clothes that will only be worn a few times!

Jools1 · 06/10/2008 21:15

Yes, those M&S jeans were really £12 - no sale price - that is what they cost They are really comfy and stretchy - not the height of fashion but not bad AND, I can get the 29inch leg version so they're not dragging on the floor !!!!

saz007 · 07/10/2008 10:25

Hi ladies, I've lurked for a while and thought it was about time I joined a thread
