Contractions are painful - can be fairly mild at first but they will get stronger & regulate themselves.

You can feel them in different ways....

For me they were VERY low down right under my bump & they were like agonising period pains, they would start, get more painful, build to a painful peak the start to come down & ease off again (I hope that makes sense).

With my friend her contractions were in her back & sort of radiated round the front a bit & my mum said hers would start at the top of her bump & radiate down.

So you can feel them in different ways & places but even they start out mild you will soon know they are real contractions.

Also with BH's if you move about they will stop or ease off whereas with contractions they won't - same as taking a bath, if they are real contractions a hot bath will help to ease the pain a little but won't stop them.

I don't know if anyone has posted this link before but I found it invaluable when in the early stages of labour with DD

That's been my experiences of contractions anyway

AnnVan · 02/08/2008 16:33

Hello again all.

cyteen - I too am with you in the oblivious corner. I definitely haven't had contractions though. Don't know if I've had Bhs. Amazing pics of you and your DB. I can't imagine going through that.

I managed about four or five hours sleep eventually, but not before I ended up crying DP asked what was wrong and I could only sob I need to sleep! I've never got that desperate for sleep before. Guess I should get used to it though.

alittlebitshy · 02/08/2008 16:53

Re contractions. it's odd - I can't remember what they felt like. I had them with dd (though induced ones - so poss more intense than a natural build up). I kept wondering if i'd know if I went into labour with Henry... but i didn't so i never had to find out lol.

Sibh · 02/08/2008 17:06

Hi everyone--it's lovely to hear about all the babies. Welcome to Imogen, Oliver and Babychacha.

I've had my mum here helping sitting about and being waited on for the last few days. To be fair she's on her way home from minding my three nephews while my sister was on honeymoon and she is wrecked.

Still, my sister has a huge entourage of nearby family, helpers and childminders and we have no-one within an hour. DH is being really kind but pointed out that I'm impossible to help because I radiate a fierce aura of independence. Not sure if that was a compliment or not. Aaah! I'm feeling a wee bit sorry for myself.
VG's comments on being grown-up and the shock of feeling vulnerable now were spot on.

Now mum has gone it's just me and a very busy DH until D-day. The DC are being fab though. I had a lovely walk with DS today and we had a really grown-up chat about school. He tried on his school uniform too-- OMG! How did he get so big and gorgeous?

I'll stop ranting now ... Hoping everyone is feeling ok today. I might try making that lemon drizzle cake to cheer myself up.

Sibh · 02/08/2008 17:14

Cyteen -- I forgot to say thanks for posting those wonderful pics of you with your brother. Thanks for sharing them with us. You have been through an incredible amount and the birth coming up is bound to stir up all kinds of emotions. We're all here to stand by you as you go through it all ...

As to contractions, mine felt like a very tight band that radiated from the front of my belly right round to the back. My hypno-thingummy cd reminds me sternly that they aren't pains. They are 'strong feelings of pressure, warmth and power', which makes DH guffaw.

But I can honestly say I've had worse period pains in the sense that with them, they come in waves that don't stop and I can't catch my breath and occasionally pass out (nice ...), whereas even if you have a bad contraction and feel panicked, it stops and you can recoup before the next one. Also, there's a huge amount to be said for the fact that you're experiencing the pain for a positive reason. With period pain it feels like a total waste of your time and energy.

By the way, can anyone remind me about the NCT breathing exercise where you 'count over the top' of the contraction. I know it helped a lot with DS's birth, but I can't remember what the story with it was ..

MrsMagooo · 02/08/2008 17:24

Totally with Sibh on that - the fact that you get a break between contractions definately makes them easier to cope with!

stillhere · 02/08/2008 17:26

Back on the thread again and have managed not to miss any more births... for the meantime! Hope yours comes soon Bealcain!

Just wanted to ask two questions about shows and breech - with my first, I had a definite show (jellyfish thing, like TS) and this time I've been getting brownish old blood coming away, from this morning. Anyone else in the same boat? I'm desperate for this baby to hang on as long as possible so hoping I could still have a couple of weeks before real action starts...

Also had a mw appointment at home this morning to discuss birth plan etc. and having said that the baby was no longer back to back she now thinks it could be breech. Getting scanned on Monday to be sure and I know there's been lots of discussion about this already (I seem to remember PMSL about torchlights up fanjos!) but wondered if anyone can shed light on where kicks etc. should be felt if they are breech? Low presumably? Or if you can point me in the direction of a good website, that would be helpful.

{{{Hugs}}} to all who aren't sleeping, either ante or post-natal, and hope those in contractors' corner get to the end of the tunnel soon. Thinking of you...

Buckets · 02/08/2008 17:38

My NCT lady said to take deep diaphragm breaths when the contraction starts, then just use your lungs and then at the peak little high up breaths that might make you squeak. The object is to keep breathing (to stop you panicking) and remember that once the squeaking part is done, it will be over.

My active phase contractions felt like my entire pelvis was in a vice or 'being stamped on by a giant' was a phrase I used a lot afterwards! But then I was full of adrenalin and producing no endorphins whatsoever. Up til then I'd been hopping up and down through contractions which is apparently a classic image of someone trying to run away from the pain instead of working through it. I just didn't know what to do with myself other than panic with each one, really wish I'd done classes first to get my head in the right place.

DH has absolutely promised me sex tonight, seeing as it could be the last chance for ages and a fond farewell to my hormone-induced nymphomania LOL. So we are going to try and get the kids to bed by 6.30 - not placing any bets on that one.

Buckets · 02/08/2008 17:41

Sorry that's confusing, my NCT lady was doing the refresher course. Had no classes before first baby.

Mrdizzydixies · 02/08/2008 17:44

evening all

just dropping in to say thank you for all your good wishes and welcome to all the new babies

miniestdixie home safe and well and still unnamed as yet I don't think I could make a decision at the moment if my life depended on it

just a quickie - went in on Thurs morning first thing, had tests done, needed more as threatening preclampsia - came back negative and went ahead with section, baby born at 11:54 weighing in at 9lb14oz, 54cm long and thick head of black hair like her dad

she has nails that look like they've been manicured and a viscious suck on her - my poor nipples are ruined already and its only been 2 days

left hosp today as the whole wing doesn't have any hot water

tired, emotional but happy

dizzydixies · 02/08/2008 17:45

sorry - dh also didn't post so have namechanged back

AnnVan · 02/08/2008 17:53

dd can't wait to see pics - congrats, and boy she was a good size!

alittlebitshy · 02/08/2008 18:09

dizzy lovely to see you. Argh about hospital wing being hot waterless..... How does that work for those who can't go home yet???

Sending lots of soothing thoughts and virtual lansinoh for those sore nips.

SHe is your smallest baby isn't she???????

Hoping your dds1 and 2 are enjoying their new sister as much as my dd is enjoying her brother.

cyteen sorry i didn't comment on your pics the other day - thanks so much for sharing them. They are very special pics and you and he were both so lucky to have one another

dizzydixies · 02/08/2008 18:17

ALBS I have no idea as that wing of the hops has the labour suite in it etc - they were trying to get it all fixed all day but I had option to go so thought sod it - I'd rather be at home anyway

yes dd3 is the smallest after 10lb4 and 11lb1 - everyone kept commenting on what a good size she was to which of course somekind m/w pointed out she was my smallest lol

two photos on profile now for all to see and then am off to try to have some tea and then another feed of hungry horace

TwilightSurfer · 02/08/2008 18:20

Dizzy how funny you're still without a name....as you are OUR NAME GURU!! {{{hugs}}}

Stillhere re: show....my has gone from clear snot to old brown goo to cloudy snot so I think it can be about any color. I'd be worried though if it starts to look blue.

Folks, CONTRACTIONS are overall like wearing a corset that is pulled way too tight then let loose again. Depending on which strings are pulled sometimes the tightness is high other times it's low. It may start in the back and move around to the front or vice versa. Mid contraction your belly feels like a watermelon...you can actually "thump" it to check for ripeness. Contractions at their worst can make you move, stand, yell, double over but most of all they take your breath (thus the "learned" breathing techniques). So make sure you BREATH through them so help with what can be painful (even when they are small....it gives you practice). Also when they are really bad you will find it difficult, if not impossible, to talk while it is happening. Remember to try and remain soft even though are feeling hard and tight. BREATH!!! Real labor contractions will not stop if you bath or lay down. Walking or moving around always increases them....even if they are just BH type ones. Goodness did I share enough.....

OP posts:
Buckets · 02/08/2008 18:23

Oh yes, write the following in your birthplan:
Please do not ask me questions during a contraction.

TwilightSurfer · 02/08/2008 18:23

Off to party for family....I may be AWOL until late late late. Don't worry. If something awesome happens I'll post immediately!!! Otherwise, all updates will be this evening.

Dizzydixies she is absolutley gorgeous.
CONGRATULATIONS

AnnVan · 02/08/2008 18:39

Dizzy she's lovely
Aaawww. Roll on end ofAugust, so I can finally see my one (wipes away little tear)

oopsacoconut · 02/08/2008 18:47

CONGRATULATIONS DIZZY - she is very adorable all cuddly and squishy looking. I am so envious of all of you with your babies and can't wait for mine to arrive.

We picked up our car seat today and it is firmly fitted in DH's car.

Nothing else much news here - i think she may come out needing a manicure from the scratching feeling quite low down or she has horns . Off to do scampi and new potatoes for dinner and pull some carrots from my much neglected veg patch.

oopsacoconut · 02/08/2008 18:49

DIZZY when reading the post under MRDIZZY's name I wondered why minidixie had been at his nipples? and it was only on the next post i realised it was you posting

cyteen · 02/08/2008 18:58

Ahh dizzy she is lovely In fact all three of your girls are total beauties. God help Mr Dixie when they're all grown up

CaptainCaveman · 02/08/2008 19:21

Hi gang, all ok here if you don't count the scar tenderness. Oliver is just gorgeous, i can't put him down . Feeding every couple of hours so just going with the flow.

Oliver had his first bath today, ably assisted by dh and ds1. He has got some heat rash which is quite marked after I have been cuddling him. Mw reckons I am hot stuff .

I was given oramorph for pain relief last night and nearly vomited. It has made me feel really spaced out today too. Feeling woozy and weird even now....Oliver has just settled down for a nap so I think i will join him zzzzzzzzzz

oopsacoconut · 02/08/2008 19:26

CC Pleased things are going well for you and Oliver, enjoy your nap.

sweetkitty · 02/08/2008 20:28
