Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
LittleMissNorty · 18/07/2008 18:30

and when I was 3 days PN and a MW came round to remove my stitches, I opened the door and she said to me "Oh, I thought I do doing a post natal visit not an ante-natal one" .....that really made me feel good!

Jolosh · 18/07/2008 19:01

Well, new to mumsnet today, and I've already been eavesdropping on the most interesting conversation I've had about labour ever. Cheers guys. Appreciating you.

Yes - am looking at the independent route, have interviewed one so far. But as want nuchal scan she recommended I go back to community midwives to arrange this. Guess what! Within 2 minutes the NHS midwife had referred to my future labour as a 'trial of scar' (had EC in the end) and went on about the risks of rupture in a really negative way. Now, MY way of looking at it is that I am 49 times less likely to rupture that to rupture, and 1/2 those who statistically rupture are actually on a syntocin drip so labour is artificially hard. I've realised that the same stats presented by people with a different agenda can come across so differently. So now, if I go for a home birth the NHS will put 'against medical advice' on my notes. The psychology of this is quite negative....!

However, I am undaunted and will continue to search for an independent midwife as I agree with you Onward - what are savings for?! And it's a once in a lifetime experience, I would love to have my toddler there to meet his little bro/sis etc etc. And hey, if it all goes wrong the midwife will empower me in the decision to go to hospital.

But tis a shame that for guaranteed support one has to pursue a private route. AND I KNOW there are some FAB NHS midwives out there too!

There. Rant over.!!

herbgarden · 18/07/2008 19:15

It's 7.15 and I don't fancy fish and chips or a curry and I so can't be arsed to cook - what are we going to eat ???? It's going to be cheese on toast at this rate (I so don't feel like cheese on toast)....

MarkStretch · 19/07/2008 08:13

Morning all.

DH came home at 1am and SNORED so loudly I have almost lost my hearing. He was still snoring at 7am so I got up- so much for my bloody lie in!

He came home earlier than I had expected (I thought they were going clubbing) because he said they were all boring and he wanted to be at home with me. Ahhhhh.

(I think he said that so I wouldn't get so cross about the snoring ha!)

Going out and about visiting family today.

When I'm lying in bed now I can feel a very definate bump- anyone else?

Jelliebaby · 19/07/2008 09:13

Markstretch - I can feel a definate bump too. Im 10 weeks today and my tummy is hard and pokes out (especially at night)I think they amount i've been eating hasn't really helped - The only way to stop me feeling sick is by eating so im grazing on food all day long. I'm hoping in 2 weeks all my sickness will dissapear and i can enjoy being pregnant.

oooggs · 19/07/2008 09:31

jelliebaby - thats me to a T. Grazing all the time so I don't feel sick - I am just heading to the size of a house and I am 12+1

yes I have a bump and feel movement (but thats cos its no.4)

I am also super sensitive to smell [yuk] especially the dts nappies [puke]

LittleSarah · 19/07/2008 11:04

Ooh I wish I could feel movement (11+5), I'm really beginning to get paranoid that something is wrong. Also no bump.

KazzaL - my scan is not until I am 14 weeks! (I keep going on about it as I'm desperate to see baby and hear heart beat and have to wait another two weeks)

Fruitstick - your MW sounds awful. God. Oops! Imagine saying you don't believe in god. That's blinking rude ain't it?

I'm going NHS again as I had a homebirth last time and it worked out fine. I didn't know the midwives who came for delivery that well but as everything went smoothly and they were only really there for an hour or so at the end it didn't really bother me. However, I know I might not be so lucky this time so keeping my fingers crossed.

LittleSarah · 19/07/2008 11:05

Fruitstick - meant to say, imagine saying don't you believe in god?

Gina80 · 19/07/2008 14:18

OMGoodness there are loads of you! I've had this thread on watch for a few weeks as I wasn't sure if I was going to be a Feb or March-er and it seems to have doubled! I've had my early scan this week and I'm 28th Feb! So can I join please?
I'm 28 and have DS1 15mths.

LittleSarah · 19/07/2008 17:30

Hi Gina, welcome aboard.

Well I've given into paranoia and ordered one of those doppler thingies you can use at home. Hopefully will be able to hear the heart beat for myself next week!

Gina80 · 19/07/2008 17:55

Oo they're good. I used the Summer one last time and it really put my mind at rest - I used it every night lol. I ebayed a load of things afterwards and that was one of them more's the pity, I thought I'd be less anxious 2nd time round but i'd quite like to use it again!

Evening...

I am knackered ! I started the small job of clearing out my under stairs cupboard at about 11.00am and have only just finished !

But it feels good. I have found lots of things I have been looking for and have managed to get rid of lots of things on ebay and freecycle.

Tomorrow, DS1 has 20 friends coming here for a BBQ/Party (20 hormonal 11/12 year olds) . Should be interesting....

Oooggs, I am sure I am feeling flutterings too. Once your on no 4, your stomach muscles are literally gone .

fruitstick · 19/07/2008 21:26

They are all coming out of the woodwork at the moment. I spoke to my sister today and relayed the midwife anecdote.

She then asked me if I was planning on having the baby in hospital and that I really should because 'if anything went wrong you'd never forgive yourself'. She had a friend who started with a home birth but ended up in hospital where the baby died. It was absolutely nothing to do with labour complications and wouldn't have made any difference if she had have been in hospital but my sister seems to think that's the reason (she's quite judgemental!).

I had a hideous hospital birth last time which ended in a c-section so actually quite fancy a home birth this time. However I'm very doubtful I'll get any impartial advice from anyone!

Am desperate for someone I meet to actually say something supportive to me instead of constantly telling me I am trying to kill my baby!

gggrrrrrrrrrrrr

MarkStretch · 20/07/2008 08:42

Fruitstick- same here. I had a horrible hospital birth last time, induction, 24 hr labour then emergency c-section and I am terrified of it happening again! Would love to have a homebirth but DH won't hear of it.

You go girl! Screw everyone else!

Dull day of washing, ironing and tidying here for me today....

Jelliebaby · 20/07/2008 08:58

I think its brave to have a home birth, do the NHS offer that?

I had quite a horrible birth too last time which ended in an emergency c section. I went to my antenatal apt last week and i thought i would have to beg to have a planned c section but they were quite happy to let me have one so i'm feeling a lot happier in the fact that i wont go through the whole drama of last time.

I wouldn't consider a home birth as i would just be too scared and i just know i would end up going into hospital at some point. I'm quite looking forward to a little stay in hospital with new baby whilst DP stays at home with DD.

onwardandupward · 20/07/2008 09:36

www.homebirth.org.uk is a really great site - it has the facts and figures about birth outcomes in hospital versus at home (and the stats come out heavily in favour of home birth as safer...)

I think people are really brave to go into hospital, myself!

onwardandupward · 20/07/2008 09:36

And yes, Jellie, the NHS are supposed to give you the choice between home or hospital.

MarkStretch · 20/07/2008 10:43

Anyone else BLOODY FREEZING!?!?

I thought it was supposed to be July!

I'm so cold.......brrrr....

LittleSarah · 20/07/2008 11:47

Yes, freezing here. Summer seems to have bypassed Scotland for the moment!

Jellie - yes home birth is fine on NHS.

fruitstick - if you want to have a homebirth then go for it. I guess I might think twice if I lived somewhere in the sticks far away from hospital but otherwise I'm all for it. Most people get moved to hospital to speed things up or because they want an epidural or something, not because there are complications. And even if there are you can get to the hospital no problem. I'm so glad nobody said anything like that to me when I was pregnant with dd, it's not what you need at all! Homebirths are great though. (I hate hospitals!).

Actually my dad did say something not particularly supportive along the lines of your mum had two really hard labours (needing epidurals/forceps) and this is a really bad idea, I want it remembered I was against this from the start. That did freak me out just a tad! Despite my 'bad genes' however my labour was fairly simple and it worked out just fine. Ha ha daddio!

herbgarden · 20/07/2008 13:34

I'm very admiring of you ladies wanting a homebirth. I am a complete Wuss and like to know I'm near machines and drugs although even if I wanted a natural birth this time I don't think it's an option - ds was an emergency c -section -failed induction and he was stuck in my pelvis-apparently his head was too big to get through....can't face that all again this time so will prob go for planned c-section ..DS does seem to have a big head!! Like his father!!...not unusually so but clearly we didn't fit !!..

Makes me shudder to think how many of my friends would have died in childbirth in the less developed countries who don't have the option of medical intervention in an emergency to try to save mother and baby....

lardybump · 20/07/2008 13:39

I'd love a home birth, would have done it first time if it wasn't for complications and each time my chances have slipped away more. I'm quite cross that I won't be able to deliver this one naturally, although I'm going to threaten my doctor if they don't have a proper discussion with me about why I can't have a natural birth the baby may be BBA.

I don't want to be in premature labour and rushed for an emergency section just because I'm down for an elective and they can't stop my labour. I'd like to know if it's going to happen that it is for a good reason. Don't get me wrong, a healthy baby is the ultimate goal, but it screwed my head up so much and made me really ill that I want to know that I'm going to put myself through that again for a reason.
